    Abstract: The archaeology of the graphic novel does not shed light on the historical origins of the comic book; on the contrary, it tries to discover the conceptual genesis of this narrative form. If the research methodology is archaeological, in fact, the theoretical approach is the same as neuro-narratology, in the light of which four important stages are suggested. These stages define the comic novel as a "natural" literary genre, a mimesis of the process transposing reality into images and constituting the basis of thought. The figure of Rodolphe Töpffer is not excluded from this process. Thanks to his theories and his work, he leads us to hypothesize that the comic book was more "novelistic" at its origin than it is in its current forms: the path to the novel, then, would not be so much of an evolution, but rather a return to the origins

    Abstract: This volume collects the reports from the conference Quando la giustizia incontra il minore, held in Pesaro on 11th May 2013. The conference, to which jurists and professionals of the sector took part, was an important opportunity for discussion on the ways to correctly protect the hearing of minors within the many processes involving them, and on the consequent need, in the courts, for premises which are adequately equipped for that purpose. The creation of protected listening rooms in Italian courts was the main national project of the Soroptimist International of Italy during the two-year period going from 2011 to 2013; to date, 40 rooms have been completed and a further 10 are under construction. This project is also expected to continue in the upcoming two years. Soroptimist International is a women's association made up of women with high qualifications in the workplace. The association operates for the promotion of human rights, the improvement of women's condition and the acceptance of diversity through a wide array of projects. Their name comes from the Latin words soror and optima. The first Soroptimist club was born in the United States in 1921, whereas the first Italian club was founded in Milan in 1928. There are currently 143 Italian clubs with about 6.000 members. The Soroptimist International of Italy publishes the magazine "La voce delle donne - Soroptimist news" and has an institutional website: www.soroptimist.it.     Abstract: During the most recent conference of the Renaissance Society of America, two sessions were devoted entirely to the Renaissance in Poland. In fifty-nine editions of what is considered the most prestigious international appointment for experts of Renaissance culture, this is the first time that characteristic features of sixteenth-century Poland were the subject of analysis and debate. The interest generated at the conference and the academic value of the contributions convinced the organisers of the panels to ask the speakers to develop and revise their contributions to conform with the conventions of the academic article. The result is a selection of essays that pursue specific pathways in exploring the cultural factors that affected the Renaissance in Poland: influences and originality in Polish literary and artistic production, orthodoxy and dissidence, the circulation of thought and reflection on the Res Publica in the spheres of both politics and philosophy.     Abstract: This thesis work intends to provide a contribution in the field of research on Stefan Zweig through the in-depth study of his most famous and emblematic biographies that made the writer's fortune worldwide in the 1930s. During the research, it emerged that Zweig's biographies represent a field that has remained largely unexplored. In addition to interviews with specialists, this aspect is confirmed by the limited number of studies relating to this topic, appeared mostly in the form of not always exhaustive journal articles. Particularly, the biographies dedicated to the two queens Marie Antoinette and Maria Stuart are little taken into account, as well as the biographical study focused on the French poet Marceline Desbordes-Valmore. From the in-depth analysis of scientific sources it becomes also clear how the terminology with which these works are indicated is problematic, in that we sometimes speak of "biography" and sometimes of "novel"; sometimes these two terms appear interchangeable within a same work. With this work, an attempt was therefore made to resolve this dilemma in favour of the concept of "biography", a term which, due to its hybridity, appears not only more adequate but above all conforming to the writer's statements

    Abstract: The work analyses the complex relationship between mental illnesses and curative medicine in the writings of E.T.A. Hoffmann, highlighting problems deriving from unsuitable practices, and shedding light on the overwhelming, asymmetric relationship between doctor/patient, man/woman. The work analyses the doubling phenomena arising from the diaries, which Hoffmann overcame determined not to fall into madness; moreover, the author highlights Hofmmann's qualities as a man and a scholar, attentive to the limits of therapies, questioning doctors without understanding. The author summarises Hoffmann's ideas on the libertarian approach to illness, which includes the acceptance of the patient in their whole being, and presents his idea of therapy consisting of interpersonal dialogue and of listening to a story which reflects a similar case. The author also suggests the novelty of the "talking cure" method ante litteram, which was then successfully adopted by psychoanalysis: a method full of ideas, fruitful for literature, from Poe to Schnitzler, and for cinema, from Hitchcock to Kubrick

    Abstract: The title of this volume refers to a reality which is often dramatically experienced, in different historical phases, by all the territories where Slavic cultures lived in contact with other ethnic groups. Beyond the problems of coexistence, which is additionally complicated today by phenomena such as globalisation and multiculturalism that disguise identity conflicts, the history of the Slavs has always been intertwined with that of other peoples. Therefore, it seemed appropriate to propose the recurrent theme of "borders", which offers ample space for reflection on a multiplicity of aspects of Slavic cultures. Today Italy still looks at the countries of Central and Eastern Europe with a certain skepticism. The languages and traditions of this area remain little or not at all known. The migratory flows of the peoples in the past twenty years have contributed to creating the image of a backward Europe of secondary importance, which wants to impose itself on the Europe of primary importance. This collective volume, on the other hand, wants to show how we can strive to understand our identity as Europeans only by widening our gaze to the east and learning the lesson of the territories of Central and Eastern Europe. Even if the western Slavs and part of the southern Slavs have participated in western history since the Middle Ages and were then divided by historical events, a new European identity can be forged only by reflecting on the events of the entire Slavic world, and experiencing the same difficulties of coexistence (as is now also the experience of western Europe) between residents and immigrants, majority and minority cultures, identity and otherness

By integrating the philosophy of time with narratology, the volume offers critical reflections aimed at identifying the type of poetics through which DeLillo articulates time in his work. In particular, the centrality of the perception of time in his novels and, more specifically, the concentration of the plots in certain moments, the oblique presence of the influence of Samuel Beckett's work in the representation of duration and the attention of the author to the double temporality of the cinematographic image and its hidden aesthetic potential are highlighted. Therefore, time becomes the conceptual context in which the textures of these texts, and the themes characterising them, find a resolution. In the representation of time, in the microscopic analysis and in the slow motion of some specific time segments, DeLillo's narrative traces the possibilities of an indefinable and mysterious perception of reality and history

    Abstract: Placed in a favourable position between land and sea, in the XV century Ragusa (Dubrovnik) was the protagonist of the commercial exchanges in the Mediterranean and represented an important reference point for all the merchants who turned to Constantinople. There were three goods in particular around which the small Republic built its fortune, attracting the attention of many merchants (especially Italians): the silver from the Balkan mines, the Apulian wheat and woolen cloths. In this volume the reconstruction of the international dimension of Ragusa passes through the review of multiple studies, coming especially from the Slavic area, conducted during the second half of the twentieth century, supplemented by a rich unpublished public, notary and corporate documentation kept in the Ragusa and Italian archives. In particular, the accounting records and correspondence of Piero Pantella, a Piacenza merchant who moved to Ragusa in 1415, were taken into consideration, from which the significant commercial activity that the merchant carried out in the Dalmatian city emerges, but also the important role that he covered in the development of the Ragusa textile manufacture

    Abstract: The Greek koinè shows a double development in the crystallised Greek language (intended for literary, administrative and ecclesiastical uses) and the language of everyday use subject to innovations that would lead to the birth neo-Greek, which was never the official language for written documents. This situation determined the almost absolute lack of documents that allow us to reconstruct the evolution of the Greek language from the late age to the early Middle Ages. This work contributes to the reconstruction of this gap by analysing the Greek language of the the private letters written on papyrus, a documentary typology probably close to the spoken register. The analysis isolated four peculiar phenomena of the morphosyntactic evolution of the Greek (genitive-dative syncretism, disappearance of the infinitive, replacement of the perfect tense with equivalent periphrases and disposition of the clitics), offering a renewed picture

    Abstract: Since the mid 20th century, the criticism of mass culture has been marked by the "apocalyptic" positions of many authors. Through the texts and ideas of three these "apocalyptic" authors (or, at least, of three authors defined as such: Adorno, Pasolini and Baudrillard), but also through the most current criticisms of ICT, the text suggests to re-read the apocalyptic authors. At the same time, it highlights the limits of information and communication technologies and their partial outdatedness, while also trying to draw inspiration from them in order to develop a model of media education which may keep alive the dialectical charge between the possibilities offered by technology and the pitfalls it sometimes hides. The apocalyptic authors, in fact, can support the need for a semiological, critical-sociological and pedagogical work, which considers the media as a problem, and creates and gives the subjects the analysis, interpretation and (critical) use skills of the media themselves. The aim is to create a form of literacy with respect to old and new "languages of knowledge", but above all with respect to the formation of critical and thoughtful, free and creative "well-made heads"

    Abstract: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common form of dementia characterized by the formation of extracellular senile plaques composed of aggregated amyloid peptide (Aβ). The present studies provide evidence that: cell resistance to amyloid toxicity is related to lipid raft cholesterol content. Cholesterol and GM1, affect the susceptibility of Familial Alzheimer's Disease (FAD) broblasts to Aβ42 oligomers in opposite ways, by modulating amyloid binding to lipid rafts and its subsequent toxic effects. The degree of toxicity of the oligomeric species results from a complex interplay between the structural and physicochemical features of both the oligomers and the cellular membrane. Neuronal differentiation of human mesenchymal stromal cells increases their resistance to Aβ42 aggregate toxicity

    Abstract: The hybridisation of different arts and genres is one of the peculiar aspects of Balzac's aesthetics, whose writings surprise for their originality and unsuspected modern perspective. In the first and second part of the thesis, the intersection points between novel and theatre will be analysed, while in the third it will be shown how these two genres, in a deep relation with the illustration, give life to atypical texts that sometimes cannot be classified or that appear anti-canonical, revealing another side of Balzac's poetics. Each section is made up of texts, whose specificity lies in the ability to combine different styles, languages, arts, exposing the mechanisms proper to 'mélange': theatricality in narrative works; the novel in the theatre; the inclusion of the image in the text; and Balzac's mode of writing, which is modelled on the uniqueness of each phenomenon

    Abstract: Ion channels are membrane proteins that selectively allow ions to flow down their electrochemical gradient across the cellular membrane. They localize in both plasma and intracellular membranes and regulate a variety of functions such as neuronal excitability, heartbeat, muscle contraction and hormones release. Thus, understanding the molecular mechanism of ion channels function and regulation is one of the key goals of modern Biophysics. During my PhD thesis, by combining patch-clamp measurements with site-direct mutagenesis, fluorophore labeling experiments and pharmacological assays, I explored some functional and structural properties of different ion transporters: the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (NCX); the large conductance Ca2+-voltage activated K+ channel (BK) channel; the human Transient receptor potential, member A1 (TRPA1) channel

    Abstract: In Italy, the problem of involuntary unemployment, although known to the working classes and public authorities at least since the age of the Risorgimento, only became the subject of specific attention at the end of the nineteenth century. It is only at that time that a political and economic debate arises on the lack of work and on the means to contrast it, on the scenario of the end-of-century depression and simultaneously to the development of the workers and peasants movements. Those years saw the foundations for the experimentation of a pioneering statistical measurement of the phenomenon, which, however, would only come to light during the Giolittian age, in a political context more open to the demands of work. This research reconstructs for the first time the "focus" of a typical problem of capitalism, which also proves itself of great interest central also in the contemporary debate

The availability of suitable hardware and software tools is condicio sine qua non for new methods testing. This PhD project addresses medical ultrasound signal processing and seeks to achieve two scientific goals: the first is to contribute to the development of an ultrasound research platform, while the second is introducing and validating, through this platform, non-standard methods. During the thesis, the capabilities of the system were improved by creating advanced software tools, such as acoustic field simulators, and by developing echo-signals elaboration programs.     Abstract: The aim of this thesis was to verify the feasibility of the hydrogen production process with purple non sulfur bacteria both under sunlight irradiation in an up-scaled system and with the use of low cost substrates. Among the products offermentations tested the best results were obtained with a medium derived from vegetable wastes. The use of a genetically modified strain of Rhodopseudomonas palustris insensitive to ammonium opened the way towards the use of wastes with attainment of high hydrogen yields also in inhibiting conditions. The experimentation carried out under natural irradiation demonstrated the full feasibility of the process using sunlight instead of artificial light in a semi-pilot reactor: the production rates were the highest so far reported for comparable outdoor systems

    Abstract: This volume contains Italian contributions to the XV Slavists' International Congress (Minsk, 20-27 August 2013).     Abstract: This book on Slavic matriarchy is the result of the studies and researches that Evel Gasparini carried out over the span of his lifetime. Intrigued by the possibility of a close link between the collective ownership of the land and the ancient agricultural-matriarchal substrate of Slav culture, Gasparini launched on the titanic enterprise of analysing the archaeological and historical sources of early Slavic civilisation. Basing himself on a concept of culture elaborated in the ethnological field, he brought to light certain contradictions in the application of the Indo-European paradigm to Slavic culture and identified a series of elements illustrating the matriarchal substrate. Exploiting an uncommon knowledge of cultural anthropology and profound linguistic competencies, in this book Gasparini maps out a complex panorama ranging from the economy to the social structure and from the religious traditions to music and dance. Out of print for some time, the book is now proposed in a new, more convenient form, complete with an appendix on Finns and Slavs - which was originally intended as another chapter in the book but was then left out - a detailed preface by Gasparini's disciple Remo Faccani, and a bibliography of the scholar's oeuvre edited by Donatella Possamai
