    Kurzfassung: Im Zeitraum 1989 bis 2005 sind per Saldo 1,6 Millionen Menschen aus den neuen in die alten Bundesländer gezogen. Die Mehrheit dieser Binnenwanderer war zwischen 18 und 29 Jahre alt und die Mehrheit war weiblich. Als Ergebnis dieser anhaltenden geschlechtsselektiven Wanderung ist in den neuen Bundesländern eine stark unausgewogene Geschlechterproportion in der Wohnbevölkerung entstanden. In der Altersgruppe der 18- bis 29-Jährigen lag die Geschlechterproportion in den neuen Bundesländern (einschließlich Berlin) im Jahr 2005 nur bei 90 Frauen zu 100 Männern und sank in zahlreichen Landkreisen auf Werte von weniger als 85 zu 100. Eine so unausgewogene Geschlechterproportion ist auch im europäischen Maßstab ungewöhnlich und kommt in keinem ähnlich großen und dicht besiedelten Gebiet vor. Als eine wesentliche Ursache der disproportionalen Wanderung wird ein erhebliches Bildungsgefälle zwischen jungen Frauen und Männern in den neuen Bundesländern identifiziert. Das hohe Bildungsniveau von Frauen ist dabei nicht nur als ökonomischer Faktor für den Fortzug zu sehen: Da Frauen Partnerschaften mit geringer gebildeten Partnern meiden, werden auch Paarbeziehungen mit westdeutschen Männern und damit das Verbleiben in Westdeutschland wahrscheinlicher. Als Ursache für die Auseinanderentwicklung des Bildungsniveaus von Frauen und Männern in den neuen Bundesländern sieht die Studie die Kollision eines Geschlechterarrangements, das seine Wurzeln in der DDR-Geschichte hat, mit den ökonomischen und gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen nach der Wiedervereinigung. Das Rollenbild von Frauen, gekennzeichnet durch hohe Wertschätzung ökonomischer Selbstständigkeit und Orientierung auf Tätigkeiten im qualifizierten Dienstleistungsbereich, erweist sich im wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Strukturwandel als prinzipiell anpassungsfähiger als jenes der Männer, deren klassische Tätigkeiten in Industrie und Handwerk eine tief greifende Entwertung erfahren haben.
    Kurzfassung: Between the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the year 2005, 1.6 million people have migrated from East Germany (the former German Democratic Republic – GDR) to West Germany. The majority of these migrants were female and between the ages of 18 and 29. This unbalanced migration has caused a disproportionate sex ratio in the East German population. The sex ratio (in the age group between 18 and 29) in 2005 was only 90 women per 100 men and in many remote counties the ratio was less than 85 to 100. In such a large and densely populated area this phenomenon is unique within Europe. This study identifies the development of a considerable discrepancy in educational levels between women and men in Eastern Germany as one important cause for the disproportionate sex ratio in migration. The higher educational level of women is not only an economic factor: Since women generally prefer partners with at least the same educational level, relationships between East German women and West German men has become much more likely than the opposite. As a cause for the discrepancy in educational levels the study highlights a clash between gender roles rooted in GDR history and structural changes that took place after German reunification. The role model of women – a high valuation of economic independence and orientation towards professions in the service sector – proves to be more adaptable to the economic and social changes in East Germany than the role model of men, whose classical vocations in industry and crafts experience a considerable devaluation.

    Kurzfassung: Diese Arbeit untersucht die Partizipationsmodi der Migrantennachkommen in Frankreich und Deutschland, insbesondere junger Menschen mit einem türkischen Hintergrund in Deutschland und einem maghrebinischen Hintergrund in Frankreich. Individuen bewegen sich in gesellschaftlichen Räumen, die für das individuelle und kollektive Handeln sowohl Opportunitäten bieten als auch durch Grenzen gekennzeichnet sind. Indem die historischen, institutionellen und strukturellen Rahmenbedingungen Frankreichs und Deutschlands verglichen werden, können die Unterschiede zwischen den Partizipationsmodi junger Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund analysiert werden. Die Auswertung repräsentativer Daten für Frankreich und Deutschland zeigt, dass die Migrantennachkommen in Frankreich deutlich höhere Bildungsabschlüsse erreichen als in Deutschland, wenn gleich die Situation polarisierter ist. Diese Bildungsungleichheiten wirken sich auf die Modi der Partizipation am Arbeitsmarkt aus. Trotz der Defizite der Migrantennachkommen in Deutschland im Hinblick auf das erreichte Bildungsniveau, haben diese eine relativ bessere Situation im Hinblick auf ihre Beschäftigung. Die Nachkommen maghrebinischer Migranten in Frankreich erfahren Arbeitslosigkeit und berufliche Disqualifizierung – trotz relativ hoher Bildungsabschlüsse. Die Partizipationsmodi verweisen auf zwei unterschiedliche, jedoch sich nicht ausschließende soziale Logiken: eine soziale Distanzierung durch Relegation in Deutschland und eine soziale Distanzierung durch Diskriminierung in Frankreich. Schließlich haben der nationale Rahmen und die Diskriminierungserfahrung einen Einfluss auf die von ihnen entwickelten Formen von Zugehörigkeit. So tendieren Jugendliche mit maghrebinischem Hintergrund, die Diskriminierung erfahren eher dazu, ihre Zugehörigkeit zur französischen Nation aufzukündigen. Dagegen hat die Diskriminierungserfahrung keinen Effekt auf das Zugehörigkeitsgefühl türkischer Migrantennachkommen in Deutschland.
    Kurzfassung: This doctoral thesis analyses the modes of participating of young people of migrant origin, in particular those of North-African origin and of Turkish origin in today’s France and Germany respectively. Especially, it deals with their educational achievements, their transition into the labour market and their forms of belonging (citizenship and elective participation). The results from French and German micro-data indicate that despite their severe difficulties in terms of school achievements, young people of Turkish origin have a more favorable working life than young people of North-African origin who are more successful in the educational system. The former experience unemployment, instability and declassing more frequently in their working life. Two types of processes of social distancing emerge from those results: through relegation in Germany and through discrimination in France. Those processes trace back to institutional, structural and symbolic mechanisms. Furthermore, both the national framework and experience of discrimination influence the forms of belonging of those population groups in different ways.
    Kurzfassung: Cette thèse analyse les modes de participation des descendants de migrants, en particulier maghrébins en France et turcs en Allemagne. Selon le cadre national dans lequel ils évoluent, les descendants de migrants n’ont pas les mêmes opportunités et ne font pas face à des contraintes similaires. Ainsi, en confrontant les conditions institutionnelles et structurelles propres aux sociétés française et allemande, il est possible de s’interroger sur les variations des modes de participation des descendants de migrants. Plusieurs dimensions sont étudiées : les inégalités dans l’accès aux titres scolaires, les transitions sur le marché du travail, le type d’emploi et les formes d’appartenance (lien de citoyenneté et lien de participation élective). Les résultats fondés sur l’exploitation quantitative de grandes enquêtes montrent que les descendants de migrants turcs, malgré leur situation d’échec scolaire, ont une vie professionnelle plus favorable que les descendants de migrants maghrébins qui ont quant à eux des diplômes plus élevés. Ces derniers, contrairement aux premiers, connaissent plus souvent le chômage, ils ont quitté le secteur industriel dans lequel étaient concentrés leurs parents, et subissent souvent un déclassement et une instabilité professionnelle. Les résultats obtenus laissent apparaître deux types de logiques sociales : la mise à distance sociale par la relégation en Allemagne et par la discrimination en France. Ces logiques sociales renvoient à des mécanismes institutionnels, structurels et symboliques précis qui sont développés et théorisés dans ce travail. Enfin, les descendants de migrants ne développent pas les mêmes formes d’appartenance. Alors que l’expérience du rejet amène les descendants de migrants maghrébins à révoquer leur appartenance à la société française, les descendants de migrants turcs sont maintenus dans un entre-soi qui, en quelque sorte, « va de soi ».

    Kurzfassung: This collection, dealing with case studies drawn from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Mauritius, examines the relationship between scientific claims and practices, and the exercise of colonial power. It challenges conventional views that portray science as a detached mode of reasoning with the capacity to confer benefits in a more or less even-handed manner. That science has the potential to further the collective good is not fundamentally at issue, but science can also be seen as complicit in processes of colonial domination. Not only did science assist in bolstering aspects of colonial power and exploitation, it also possessed a significant ideological component: it offered a means of legitimating colonial authority by counter-poising Western rationality to native superstition and it served to enhance the self-image of colonial or settler elites in important respects.     Kurzfassung: Wie sind Liebe und Paarbeziehung im historischen Zeitablauf wechselseitig motiviert, welche Geschlechterzuschreibungen spielen darin welche Rolle, und verliert romantische Liebe als Beziehungsregulativ gar insgesamt an Bedeutung? Holger Herma untersucht den Wandel der Liebessemantik in der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik und stellt die generationsspezifische Suche nach einem "authentischen" Selbst in der Intimität dar. Angesiedelt im Bereich einer empirischen Wissenssoziologie rekonstruiert die Studie, wie sich das individuelle Ich in seiner Selbstthematisierung in der romantischen Liebe immer zugleich als historisches Ich entäußert. Der Autor kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass das moderne Versprechen der Liebe nach höchstpersönlicher Aufmerksamkeit einer ständigen Prüfung unterzogen wird. Die Änderungen in der Liebesauffassung entspringen einer Dynamik von geteilter Zeiterfahrung, gemeinsamer Problemdeutung und herrschender Genderzuschreibung. Das Buch wendet sich an Dozierende und Studierende der Sozialwissenschaften mit Schwerpunkt Paar-und Genderforschung, moderne Wissenskulturen, Lebensverlaufs- und Biografieforschung und bietet zugleich wertvolle Anregungen für die qualitative Beratungspraxis.

    Anmerkung: Includes bibliographical references and index , On the periphery of nineteenth-century Iran -- The city of Isfahan and its hinterland -- A road through the mountains -- In the fields of oil -- The Bakhtiyari tribes in the Iranian Constitutional Revolution , Tribes and Empire on the Margins of Nineteenth-Century Iran traces the history of the Bakhtiyari tribal confederacy of the Zagros Mountains through momentous times that saw the opening of their lands to the outside world. As the Qajar dynasty sought to integrate the peoples on its margins into the state, the British Empire made commercial inroads into the once inaccessible mountains on the frontier between Iran and Iraq. The distance between the state and the tribes was narrowed through imperial projects that included the building of a road through the mountains, the gathering of geographical and ethnographic information, and the exploration for oil, which culminated during the Iranian Constitutional Revolution. These modern projects assimilated autonomous pastoral nomadic tribes on the peripheries of Qajar Iran into a wider imperial territory and the world economy. Tribal subjects did not remain passive amidst these changes in environment and society, however, and projects of empire in the hinterlands of Iran were always mediated through encounters, accommodation, and engagement with the tribes. In contrast to the range of literature on the urban classes and political center in Qajar Iran, Arash Khazeni adopts a view from the Bakhtiyari tents on the periphery. Drawing upon Persian chronicles, tribal histories, and archival sources from London, Tehran, and Isfahan, this book opens new ground by approaching nineteenth-century Iran from its edge and placing the tribal periphery at the heart of a tale about empire and assimilation in the modern Middle East. --From publisher's description

    Kurzfassung: Früher war alles besser! Früher gingen die Menschen viel pfleglicher mit fremden Besitz um! Ist das so? Keinesfalls, wie die Untersuchung der Historikerin Lorenz zeigt. Die Autorin setzt sich geistes- und gesellschaftswissenschaftlich mit dem Thema "Vandalismus" auseinander, geht auch sprachgeschichtlich vor und zieht juristische Bewertungen aus den Jahrhunderten zurate. Sie berichtet über die Antike und endet in der Gegenwart (Graffiti z.B.). Heute weiß man: Vandalismus ist ein reines Adoleszenzproblem. Der kleine Band ist lesenswert und ergänzt das schon ältere Buch von A. Demandt (ID 5/98). Da es sich um ein wissenschaftliches Buch handelt, nur: (3)

    Kurzfassung: Society is faced with a variety of undesirable behaviours and conditions such as crime, mental and physical illnesses and disabilities, that usually provoke different responses in people such as emotions of anger, fear or pity. In our evolutionary past, these emotions adaptively motivated the repair of interpersonal relationships, whereas more recently they may also result in other types of social control such as stigmatization or tolerance. Dijker and Koomen show, on the basis of elementary psychological processes, how peoples' responses are not only dependent on type of deviance but also on personality, situation, historical period and culture. They also examine the implications of these responses for the well-being and coping of people with deviant conditions or stigmas. This book provides conceptual tools for developing interventions to reduce stigmatization and offers a deeper understanding of the psychological basis of social control as well as opportunities to influence its potentially harmful consequences

Export processing zones such as Batam are both celebrated and vilified in contemporary debates on economic globalization. The Anxieties of Mobility moves beyond these dichotomies to explore the experiences of migrants and tourists who pass through Batam. Johan Lindquist's extensive fieldwork allows him to portray globalization in terms of relationships that bind individuals together over long distances rather than as a series of impersonal economic transactions. He offers a unique ethnographic perspective, drawing together the worlds of factory workers and prostitutes, migrants and tourists, and creating a compelling account of everyday life in a borderland characterized by dramatic capitalist expansion. The book uses three Indonesian concepts (merantau, malu, liar) to shed light on the mobility of migrants and tourists on Batam. The first refers to a person's relationship with home while in the process of migration. The second signifies the shame or embarrassment felt when one is between accepted roles and emotional states. The third, liar, literally means "wild" and is used to identify those who are out of place, notably squatters, couples in premarital cohabitation, and prostitutes without pimps. These sometimes overlapping concepts allow the book to move across geographical and metaphorical boundaries and between various economies. The Anxieties of Mobility is an ideal text for courses dealing with gender, globalization, and anthropology

The book is organised around several major questions: How do memories construct our past? How do we build shared collective memories? How does memory shape history?
