    Abstract: Aus dem halbierten Stück eines Baumstammes stellt ein junger Mann die Rohform des anzufertigenden Stiels her. Mit einer Dechsel wird das Werkstück bearbeitet, bis es die Form eines Fragezeichens hat. Durch weiteres Runden und Glätten entsteht der fertige Stiel, der in die Tülle einer Grabschaufel eingepaßt wird.
    Abstract: A young man roughly trims one of the halves of a cleft trunk and shapes it with an adze into the form of a mark of interrogation. After further rounding and smoothing the finished shaft is inserted into the socket of a digging shovel.

    Abstract: Nach Auswahl und Fällen eines Baumes beim Dorf Mayongo und der Geschenkübergabe an den Holzschnitzer tritt kurz eine Gruppe Jugendlicher mit einer Grasmaske auf. Dem Aushöhlen und Zurichten der Maske mit Wange, Schnabel und "Hörnern" folgt die Verzierung mit Erdfarben und Brandmalerei. Nach dem Flechten einer Halskrause und der Herstellung eines Bastkleides Vorführung der Maske.
    Abstract: The procedure begins with circling round the chosen tree, followed by its felling; then come the handing over of gifts to the sculptor, and the marking and cutting to length of the section of tree trunk reserved for the mask. In the meanwhile, a group of young men has appeared with a grass mask. Then the block of wood is hollowed out to provide room for the bearer of the mask's head, the cheeks and beak are carved, and a slit is pierced for the eyes. Holes are burned into the neck-edge with the glowing end of a spear. Once the "horns" are made, the mask is painted and the neck collar knotted. Ears and eyes are also fitted on. Finally, a mask-dress is made with strips of bast, and the finishing touch consists in sewing the collar on to the neck-part of the mask. Right at the end, one of the two sculptors slips the mask on and makes a short appearance.

Nach dem Anfertigen der Grundform wird der obere Teil des Gefäßes mit Ziermustern versehen. Danach brennt die Frau das Gefäß in einem aufgeschichteten Holzfeuer. Durch Abreiben des Tons mit schwelenden Blättern wird dem Produkt ein schwarzer Glanz verliehen.
    Abstract: A female potter makes an egg-shaped water vessel about 50 centimetres high by the coiling method. After shaping, the upper part of the vessel is decorated. The pot is baked in a wood fire. Finally the pottery is rubbed with smouldering leaves to give it a black glaze.

    Abstract: Buduma-Männer bauen auf Bestellung einen großen (Länge 110 cm, Breite 80 cm), umgekehrt wappenförmigen Schild mit Randwulst und gerader Unterkante aus leichtem Ambatschholz. Die konvex gebogenen Bretter, die mit einer Lanze zurechtgeschnitten wurden, werden mit spitzen Holzstäbchen verbunden, verschnürt und mit Kuhhaut überspannt. Auf der Rückseite befestigt man einen Holzgriff.
    Abstract: Buduma men make an order from light ambadj-wood (Aeschynomene elaphroxylon) a large triangular shield (length: 110 cm, width: 80 cm) with curved sides bound with a roll and a straight lower edge. The convex boards, trimmed with a lance, are joined together with small pointed sticks, strung together and covered with cow skin. A wooden handle is fixed to the back of the shield.

    Abstract: In Bol am Ostufer des Tschadsees schmilzt ein Schmied acht von einem Auftraggeber mitgebrachte Maria-Theresien-Taler zu zwei kleinen Silberbarren um. Aus dem einen formt er auf dem Amboß mit einem Schlegel einen spindelförmigen Halsschmuck mit spiraligen Windungen. Aus dem zweiten fertigt er einen dicken Ring als Haarschmuck. Die fertigen Stücke erhalten in kochendem Wasser mit Kräutern einen hellen Glanz.
    Abstract: At Bol on the east shore of Lake Chad a blacksmith melts 8 Maria Theresa thalers, provided by his customer, and shapes them into two small ingots. On the anvil he then forges one of the ingots with an iron mallet into a spindle-shaped spiral necklace and the other into a head ornament consisting of one thick ring. The finished objects are put in boiling water added with herbs to make them brilliant.

    Abstract: In einem Großfamiliengehöft wird von zwei Männern ein Hammel geschächtet, abgebalgt, ausgenommen, mit Gewürzen eingerieben und am Spieß über einer glühend heißen Feuergrube gebraten. Frauen bereiten aus Weizenmehl und Wasser Kuskus. In einem Kochtopf über einem offenen Feuer kochen sie aus Gemüse eine scharfe Soße. In einem geflochtenen Behälter über dem Topf wird der Kuskus in dem entweichenden Dampf gar gedünstet. Anschließend werden die zum Festmahl ankommenden Gäste feierlich begrüßt.

    Abstract: Ein Schmied formt aus Wachs das Modell einer kleinen Gazelle, umkleidet es mit Lehm und versieht es mit einer Ausgußtülle. Er härtet die Lehmform im Feuer und schmilzt dabei das Wachs aus. Gußform und ein mit Messingstücken gefüllter Tonbehälter werden miteinander verbunden. Das im Holzkohlenfeuer geschmolzene Messing fließt durch Umkippen in die Gußform, die nach Erkalten zerschlagen wird. Anschließend wird die Figur befeilt und poliert.
    Abstract: In order to make a brass reproduction of an animal a wax model is prepared which, having been covered with clay, is melted and poured out. A clay vessel filled with pieces of brass is now secured to the mould. The whole is heated and then so tipped that the molten brass flows into the mould. The clay having been knocked off the brass figure is then filed and polished.

    Abstract: Aus einem ca. ein Meter langen, entrindeten Stück eines Baumstammes schnitzt ein Mann einen Totenpfahl. In die dickere, obere Hälfte werden rings um den Stamm laufende, schräge Zickzackmuster eingekerbt. Vor dem Aufstellen des Totenpfahls wird der obere Teil mit der Hand mit roter Farbe bestrichen.
    Abstract: A man carves a grace-post out of an unbarked trunk about a metre long. Oblique zigzag patterns running round the trunk are engraved on the bigger upper part of the post. Before setting up the grave-post, the upper part is covered with red paint applied with the hand.

    Abstract: Ein Mann fertigt ein mit Verzierungen versehenes Wachsmodell des Pfeifenkopfes an. Durch den schrittweisen Vollzug der Technik des Gelbgusses in der verlorenen Form entsteht daraus ein Pfeifenkopf, der abschließend von Tonresten gereinigt wird.
    Abstract: A man first makes an ornamented wax model of the desired pipe-bowl, then executes the bowl according to the lost wax technique. The finished bowl is cleaned of clay residues.
