Abstract:
Virtual kidnapping through telephonic extortion scams are widespread in Mexico. Most people would know to immediately hang up the phone and contact the supposed kidnapped family member to disprove the attempt. However, this does not always happen. When families believe in the scam, the emotional shocks they receive can start a chain reaction with far reaching consequences. The story told in this article follows the many steps such an extortion occasioned (violence, silence, hexes, and family break‐ups) by focusing on the knockbacks and serious effects the event had for the different family members involved. [crime, family, hexes, magic, Mexico]
