Abstract:
Reflections on popular music often emphasize the cases of voluntary music experience, motivated by affective and symbolic adherence in which individuals and social groups listen to the songs they like. But it is not always like this. This article aims to discuss the situations in which compulsory musical experience generates discomfort among listeners, irritating and intimidating those who do not share the pleasure of listening to a certain repertoire. The example discussed here is the case of funk, a Brazilian music genre with historical links to the suburbs and favelas. Funk resurfaced as a prime topic in the media connected with the case of the so-called rolezinhos in 2013, causing discomfort and rejection. To think about the hassle of the popular funkeiro is to reprocess ideas about social inequality in a context of great social, political, and behavioral changes in Brazil and worldwide.
