Abstract: The Covid-19 crisis has been a defining moment for the maker movement. Groups and individuals are designing and producing personal protective equipment like face shields and masks, forming grassroots organizations to deliver equipment to medical professionals, and engaging with doctors and nurses to improve the designs and materials they're producing. We're calling this civic response from makers all over the world "Plan C," the backup plan for the backup plan. In this issue we highlight the Plan C people and projects that have driven the maker response and saved lives, and show the DIY PPE you can make to help your community too. We also showcase projects and tips to get you through shelter-in-place orders, like building a 20-second musical hand soap dispenser, transitioning to homeschooling, and delving into webcasting tech. And there are a few kid-friendly projects to help you parents keep your sanity. Plus, over 39 projects including: Build a mini jacob's ladder Make a fully functional cell phone with a rotary dial Construct a simple boomerang that flies indoors and out Tell time with a unique "rewrite" clock using sequins and much more!

Abstract: No, you’re not crazy: For years, it’s been getting harder and harder to repair your stuff. From implementing proprietary components and specialized fasteners to withholding schematics and mandating repairs go through “authorized” outlets, modern companies do their best to make it difficult to fix the products you already own. This, by design, gives you no choice but to buy new things whenever your old things break. But it’s still your stuff, and you should have the right to fix it. In this issue we hear from Right-to-Repair luminary Cory Doctorow and iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens about the uphill battle for policy progress at the national level in the U.S. and beyond. Plus, we look at how makers are already addressing repair needs in their own communities, from online meetups for repair advice to cultivating a repair mindset in students at a young age. Plus, more than 35 projects including: Build a GPS-guided parachute that guides your aerial payload back to you Construct a workspace fume hood that funnels toxic gasses out of harm’s way Make an e-paper box that displays popular quotations via Reddit’s hivemind 3D print a versatile vise that conforms snuggly to whatever it holds And much more!

Abstract: From an exciting array of low-cost hardware to more plug-and-play training modules, itâ??s easier than ever for makers to incorporate machine learning into personal projects. In the new issue of Make: (Vol. 77), we take a look at new tools you can use to train AI modules right now like Tensor Flow, Edge Impulse, and Lobe, and show how to use frameworks like Tensor Flow Lite to squeeze trained AI onto a Raspberry Pi or Arduino. Our cover story details how to make an AI-empowered artificial nose that can sort coffee from tea, or identify whatever else you train it to smell. Next in this section we show: how to build a teddy bear that listens and Tweet-shames you when it hears a swear word, how to make a trash-sorting camera using Lobe and Raspberry Pi, and how to monitor your 3D printer for failed prints with an AI watchdog. Plus, get the inside scoop on Tesla coil-powered band ArcAttackâ??s new mini musical coil kit. Also find 23 projects inside, including: Track meteors entering the atmosphere with a Raspberry Pi Modify a vintage iPod to stream music from Spotify Make an animated light-up skirt with 120 hidden full-color LEDs that respond to your movements Add some arctic ambience to your home with a quick Arduino-powered Aurora Borealis light setup And much more!
