Abstract: This book explores the formation of working-class identities in the period 1880-1930, as reflected in changes in work and industrial relations, family life, patterns of saving, and changing political allegiances. Trevor Griffiths challenges the notion that the period witnessed the emergence of a more united sense of class among British workers. Instead, the picture emerges of a working class for whom the ties of work and neighbourhood counted for less than those ofreligion and nationality.

Abstract: "This book examines the experiences and values which shaped working-class life in Britain in the half-century from 1880. It takes as its focus a region, Lancashire, which was central to the social and political changes of the period. The discussion centres on two towns, Bolton and Wigan, which, while they were geographically close, differed significantly in their industrial fortunes and their electoral development. The formation of class identity is traced through developments in the world of work, from the impact of technological and managerial innovations to the elaboration of collective-bargaining procedures. Beyond work, particular attention is paid to the dynamics of neighbourhood and family life, the latter emerging as an important source of continuity in working-class life. The broader impact of such influences are traced through a close examination of the electoral politics of the period."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract: Examines the history of early cinema in Scotland from its inception in 1896 until the 1930sThe popularity of cinema and cinema-going in Scotland was exceptional. By 1929 Glasgow had 127 cinemas, and by 1939 it claimed more cinema seats per capita than any other city in the world. Focusing on the social experience of cinema and cinema-going, this collection of essays provides a detailed context for the history of early cinema in Scotland, from its inception in 1896 until the arrival of sound in the early 1930s. Tracing the movement from travelling fairground shows to the establishment of permanent cinemas in major cities and small towns across the country, the book examines the attempts to establish a sustainable feature film production sector and the significance of an imaginary version of Scotland in international cinema. With case studies of key productions like Rob Roy (1911), early cinema in small towns like Bo'ness, Lerwick and Oban, as well as of the employment patterns in Scottish cinemas, the collection also includes the most complete account of Scottish-themed films produced in Scotland, England, Europe and the USA from 1896 to 1927.Key FeaturesExplores cinema-going in cities and towns across Scotland, large and smallEngages with international debates on the social history of cinemaIncludes a filmography of Scottish-themed films produced in Scotland, England, Europe and the USA from 1896 to 1927...

Abstract: Accounts of nineteenth-century Scotland have been preoccupied with the impact of change, unprecedented in its pace and extent. Through the shock of industrialisation and its close cousin urbanisation, society evolved from small scale and personal to larger scale, dense and urban, in the process transforming all aspects of the everyday. --

Abstract: This series demonstrates how everyday routines and behaviours can open a window into the social, economic and cultural lives of ordinary Scots Each volume examines common topics such as landscape, homes, objects, rituals, beliefs, work and leisure patterns, conflict and communication Across the series there are some striking continuities and remarkable changes in aspects of Scottish everyday life, while the everyday is shown to be shaped by national and regional surroundings, and varied between urban and rural, highland lowland settings. Based on the collective research of a large team of established and younger scholars, this series presents an entirely new way of looking at Scotland's past --
Abstract: The chapters in this volume examine the lives of the Scottish people under the changes and continuities that enveloped the nineteenth century. Some of the most visible transformations were reflected in the Scottish landscape and in the work and culture found in urban areas. Locality and community were revitalised in new customs and ceremonies. The printed word brought insight into society at home and at a distance. Rural Scotland adjusted to changes in farming practice and the traumas of population loss and began to look to the opportunities presented by recreation and tourism. With new interpretations from some of Scotland's most respected historians, this collection makes essential reading for anyone looking to understand the everyday lives of the Scottish people in this most dynamic century. --Book Jacket
