Er äußert sich zu seinem Werk und zu den geistigen Anregungen, die ihn geprägt haben. Er rekapituliert die Debatten mit Kollegen, erläutert seine Forschungen und präzisiert seine Kritik am Kolonialismus. Nicht zuletzt im zweiten und dritten Teil des Bandes wird deutlich, was diese Gespräche insgesamt zu einem außergewöhnlichen Dokument macht: der lebenslange Kampf eines Wissenschaftlers für einen radikalen Humanismus. Claude Lévi-Strauss hat die Denkformen unserer Epoche tiefgreifend beeinflußt. Mit seinen Werken hat er die eigene Kultur den Respekt vor fremden Kulturen gelehrt. Die Hellsichtigkeit und die Intensität seiner Analysen sind mittlerweile legendär. Die Erinnerungen von Lévi-Strauss zeichnen ein Kapitel europäischer Geistesgeschichte nach, und sie belegen in vielen Einzelheiten das Selbstverständnis eines hervorragenden Gelehrten unseres Jahrhunderts.
