Abstract: "After a long period of regional stability in crops and modes of production and important but limited expansion in some parts of the world, the so-called Age of Discovery set in motion forces that transformed agriculture, impacted indigenous populations in the western hemisphere, and made agriculture a global commodity. Even timeless essentials like seeds and soils have been subject to significant interventions. The modern essentials of agriculture -- such as the development of expert and knowledge networks -- contributed to a vast increase in agricultural output, but not without unanticipated costs. The use of the Columbian Exchange theory provides a useful way to explore the many exemplary commodities that burst on the global stage in the 15th and 16th centuries as well as others that made a late entry into the pantheon of global agricultural commodities. Finally, the concept of key transitions in agriculture provides a structure to the discussion of pivotal innovations that led to significant change, such as the wet Rice agriculture. It also speaks to the rise of the Atlantic Plantation and the Green Revolution and the costs imposed on indigenous populations and the environment"--
