Abstract:
〈p〉Das Jahr 1815 bildete nicht nur für das internationale Staatensystem ein Epochenjahr. Denn die auf dem Wiener Kongress getroffenen Entscheidungen waren auch der Ausgangspunkt für den Übergang der bislang unter französischer Herrschaft stehenden Rheinlande an Preußen. Die Beschlüsse markierten den Anfang einer häufig von gegenseitigem Unverständnis und Vorurteilen begleiteten Beziehung, welche die Geschichte bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein prägen sollte. Spätestens 1822, im Gründungsjahr der preußischen Rheinprovinzen, war ein Rheinland entstanden, das nicht nur durch kulturelle, konfessionelle, soziale und demographische Unterschiede gekennzeichnet war, sondern das auch Gegensätze im Hinblick auf staatliche Traditionen vereinigte. Die Beiträge des Bandes zeichnen ein breites und vergleichendes Panorama des schwierigen Weges zueinander und gehen den damit einhergehenden Entwicklungen in den Bereichen von Verwaltung, Wirtschaft, Bildung und Kultur nach.〈/p〉
