Abstract: "Few are the students of human nature who are not interested in the subject of sexual functioning. Whether it be that this topic is truly at the core of all human personality or that tradition has cloaked the problem in taboos which have made investigations difficult and perspectives distorted, questions concerning the sexual nature of man arise persistently and insistently. The questions arise, but the answers are not readily forthcoming. In this paper Professor Leuba offers a significant analysis of man's sexual functioning. The data of the cultural anthropologist, the psychologist, the historian, the clinician, and the biologist are integrated to provide a biosocial approach which may well serve as a model for the study of man's other functions. Not only is it an important synthesis of insights on an important subject, but it constitutes a distinct methodological advance in bringing the contributions of history and of biology into conjuction via the learnings and psychodynamics of the individual. Professor Leuba here discusses a variety of situations which arise in our culture and cause confusion and conflict for the inexperienced. Such problems provide concretization for the developing exposition and in addition help the reader to understand many personal problems. The writer's orientation toward "furthering the attitudes, habits, controls, knowledge, and circumstances which are most likely to lead to a satisfying marriage" and good personal adjustment of the individual pervades his discussion"--Foreword.
