Abstract:
As a bloody struggle between the nationalist uprising of General Francisco Franco and the government of the Second Spanish Republic, the Spanish Civil War raged unchecked in Spain from 1936 through 1939. A definitive number of casualties has never emerged, but historians now estimate the death toll at somewhere between 500,000 and 1,000,000 lives. Given these approximations, and the subsequent history of Spain (where Franco reigned until his death at age 83 in November 1975), two questions naturally arise: what purpose, if any, did the Spanish Civil War serve - and what did Europe gain from it? Made to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the formation of the National Brigades the reflective documentary Memories of a Future finds two filmmakers - Spanish Pepe Petos and English Margaret Dickinson - teaming up to answer these questions effectively with extended cinematic reflections on the trajectory of the Spanish Civil War and speculations about what it meant for future generations.
