Abstract: The launching of this inaugural issue of the journal kritisk etnografi - Swedish Journal of Anthropology marks both historical continuity and future-oriented innovation. The issue is largely composed of articles emanating from the 2016 Vega Symposium when Didier Fassin was awarded the SSAG's Medal in Gold. The theme of the Symposium was "The Public Presence of Anthropology", addressing the public relevance and importance of anthropology, as well as, the complex issue raised by the interactions with publics. In this first article, Fassin suggests a critical approach to the public presence of anthropology. Margaret Lock's article focuses on her longstanding work on protean biologies. The article by Thomas Hylland Eriksen looks into how the anthropologist may be irrelevant in a relevant way. Ulf Hannerz's article focuses on past and present of Swedish anthropology, and outlines a public anthropology for Swedes. The inaugural issue also includes a list of recently defended PhD thesis in anthropology at Swedish universities. (Umschlagtext)
