Abstract: When the Suez and Hungarian crises broke out in 1956 Escott Reid had been for four years the Canadian High Commissioner to India. He was one of the senior diplomats in New Delhi and was on good terms with Prime Minister Nehru and the senior officers of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. This book is based on his writings at the time and some hitherto unpublished documents. The central theme of the book is the reaction of Nehru to the two crises and Reid's attempt to persuade him to support the Hungarian Revolution and to denounce the Soviet suppression of it. The book complements existing studies on the Hungarian Revolution, the Suez affair, and the foreign policies of India and Canada. The epilogue, written in November 1956, is an especially distinguished piece of political reporting and analysis.
Description / Table of Contents: October - revolution in Hungary and aggression in Suez; 1-9 November; 9-15 November; 16 November-23 December - the debulganization of Nehru; a testing time.
