Abstract: In January 1956 only fifteen of the 250 offices in the Nigerian Army were Nigerian, and the soldiers were generally despised by nationalist as the underpaid and poorly equipped agents of the colonialists. Ten years later, on the eve of the first military coup, the Army stood at the pinnacle of popular esteem. It had been modernized and expanded, had served with distinction in the Congo and elsewhere, and all its officers were Nigerian. In this illuminating study, the first of its kind, the author traces the stages of this transformation and describes the increasing tension and political manoeuvring which exploded into the military coups of 1966. The political background, the balance of forces and the reasons for the success of failure of these and several earlier attempts to subvert the existing government are examined in detail.
