    Kurzfassung: Borderlands migration has been the subject of considerable study, but the authorship has usually reflected a north-of-the-border perspective only. Gathering a transnational group of prominent researchers, including leading Mexican scholars whose work is not readily available in the United States and academics from US universities, Mexican Migration to the United States brings together an array of often-overlooked viewpoints, reflecting the interconnectedness of immigration policy. This collection’s research, principally empirical, reveals significant aspects of labor markets, family life, and educational processes. Presenting recent data and accessible explanations of complex histories, the essays capture the evolving legal frameworks and economic implications of Mexico-US migrations at the national and municipal levels, as well as the experiences of receiving communities in the United States. The volume includes illuminating reports on populations ranging from undocumented young adults to elite Mexican women immigrants, health-care rights, Mexico’s incorporation of return migration, the impact of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals on higher education, and the experiences of young children returning to Mexican schools after living in the United States. Reflecting a multidisciplinary approach, the list of contributors includes anthropologists, demographers, economists, educators, policy analysts, and sociologists. Underscoring the fact that Mexican migration to the United States is unique and complex, this timely work exemplifies the cross-border collaboration crucial to the development of immigration policies that serve people in both countries.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: "Greenport, New York, a village on the North Fork of Long Island, has become an exemplar of a little-noted national trend--immigrants spreading beyond the big coastal cities, driving much of rural population growth nationally. In Village of Immigrants, Diana R. Gordon illustrates how small-town America has been revitalized by the arrival of these immigrants in Greenport, where she lives. Greenport today boasts a population that is one-third Hispanic. Gordon contends that these immigrants have effectively saved the town's economy by taking low-skill jobs, increasing the tax base, filling local schools, and patronizing local businesses. Greenport's seaside beauty still attracts summer tourists, but it is only with the support of the local Latino workforce that elegant restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts are able to serve these visitors. For Gordon the picture is complex, because the wave of immigrants also presents the town with challenges to its services and institutions. Gordon's portraits of local immigrants capture the positive and the negative, with a cast of characters ranging from a Guatemalan mother of three, including one child who is profoundly disabled, to a Colombian house painter with a successful business who cannot become licensed because he remains undocumented. Village of Immigrants weaves together these people's stories, fears, and dreams to reveal an environment plagued by threats of deportation, debts owed to coyotes, low wages, and the other bleak realities that shape the immigrant experience--even in the charming seaport town of Greenport. A timely contribution to the national dialogue on immigration, Gordon's book shows the pivotal role the American small town plays in the ongoing American immigrant story--as well as how this booming population is shaping and reviving rural communities"--

Abseits der Diskussionen um Minaretthöhen stellt diese Studie anhand des konkreten Beispiels kleiner migrantengeführter Lebensmittelgeschäfte die Integrationsfrage dort, wo das Zusammenleben mit dem Fremden tagtäglich erprobt wird. Dabei wird von alltagspraktischem Wirtschaftshandeln auf lokaler Ebene ausgegangen und mittels ethnographischer Methoden schrittweise ein praktisches und theoretisches Verständnis der eigentlichen Problematik gewonnen. Diese zeigt sich hier weniger in kultureller Differenz als in der Aushandlung sozialer Rollen vor dem Hintergrund alltäglicher Praktiken des Einkaufs.

    Kurzfassung: Bemerkung des Integrationsfonds: Bades grundlegendes Buch umfaßt Beiträge von 33 ExpertInnen und informiert umfassend über das Thema "Migration". Der erste Teil behandelt deutsche Auswanderer in Europa und Übersee. Die Auswanderung nach Osten der Siebenbürger Sachsen und der Banater und Sathmarer Schwaben bis zu den unter Stalin nach Westsibirien deportierten Wolga-Deutschen. Die überseeische Auswanderung, die im 19.Jahrhundert ein Massenexodus wurde, vor allem in die Vereinigten Staaten, aber auch nach Kanada, Lateinamerika, Australien und Neuseeland. Der zweite Teil behandelt die Wanderungsbewegungen in umgekehrter Richtung. Die Spannweite reicht vom Schicksal der Roma und Sinti in Deutschland über Glaubensflüchtlinge der frühen Neuzeit bis zu den "Ostjuden" im Kaiserreich, von den "Ruhrpolen" und "ausländischen Wanderarbeitern" über den Ausländereinsatz im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland bis hin zu jenen Arbeitssklaven der NS-Kriegsmaschinerie, die nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs die Masse der "Displaced Persons" stellten. Die jüngste Vergangenheit: Integration der Vertriebenen und Flüchtlinge, Wandel der "Gastarbeiterfrage" der 60er Jahre zur Einwanderungsthematik der 80er Jahre und die neue Einwanderungssituation im vereinten Deutschland werden hier bilanziert und schließlich die aktuelle Lage untersucht. Die Konturen einer multikulturellen Gesellschaft, wie die Grundlinien einer tragfähigen Einwanderungspolitik, sowie die Zukunftserwartungen in Deutschland bis zum Jahr 2030. Der Herausgeber und Mitautor ist Professor für Neueste Geschichte und Leiter des Instituts für Migrationsforschung und interkulturelle Studien (IMIS) der Universität Osnabrück.
