Abstract: The book offers a glimpse back in time to a Middle Sepik society, the Iatmul, first investigated by the anthropologist Gregory Bateson in the late 1920s while the feminist anthropologist Margaret Mead worked on sex roles among the neighbouring Tchambuli (Chambri) people. The author lived in the Iatmul village of Kararau in 1972/3 where she studied women's lives, works, and knowledge in detail. She revisited the Sepik in 2015 and 2017. The book, the translation of a 1977 publication in German, is complemented by two chapters dealing with the life of the Iatmul in the 2010s. It presents rich quantitative and qualitative data on subsistence economy, marriage, and women's knowledge concerning myths and rituals. Besides, life histories and in-depth interviews convey deep insights into women's experiences and feelings, especially regarding their varied relationships with men in the early 1970s. Since then, Iatmul culture has changed in many respects, especially as far as the economy, religion, knowledge, and the relationship between men and women are concerned. In her afterword, the anthropologist Christiane Falck highlights some of the major topics raised in the book from a 2018 perspective, based on her own fieldwork which she commenced in 2012. Thus, the book provides the reader with detailed information about gendered lives in this riverine village of the 1970s and an understanding of the cultural processes and dynamics that have taken place since. Abstract: Iran has long been regarded as an international pariah state in some parts of the international community. However, its negative image in many countries disguises its history of tourism and rich cultural and natural heritage. Following the July 2015 nuclear deal and the reduction in sanctions, Iran is focusing on international tourism as a means to generate economic growth in addition to its substantial domestic tourism market. Given the significance of tourism in the Middle East and in international politics, as well as restrictions on international mobility, this volume brings together the first contemporary collection of research on tourism in Iran. Written by experts based both within and outside of Iran, the chapters engage with a number of crucial issues including the importance of religion, the role of women in society, sustaining Iran's cultural heritage, Iran's image and the resistive economy to provide a benchmark assessment of tourism and its potential future in a troubled political environment. The book will undoubtedly be of interest not only to those readers who focus specifically on Iran but also those who seek a wider understanding of Iran's role in the region and how tourism is utilised as part of national and regional economic development policies.

Abstract: The R4 Rural Resilience Initiative enables rural communities to build their resilience in the face of extreme climate events. R4, formerly known as HARITA, is designed to increase smallholders` food and income security in drought-prone areas through a holistic risk management strategy. Operating in the northern Ethiopian region Tigray since 2009, R4 has reduced adverse impacts of climate shocks and stresses considerably. The initiative is currently implemented by Oxfam America (OA) and the World Food Program (WFP) in Ethiopia as well as in Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, Zambia and Zimbabwe. R4 comprises four programme components: risk reduction, risk transfer, risk reserves, and prudent risk taking. Taken together, they offer farmers access to index climate risk insurance and credit, improve natural resource management, and encourage savings. Farmers lacking sufficient funds to pay the insurance premium benefit from an innovative insurance-forwork approach. Instead of paying in cash they work in disaster risk reduction (DRR) projects in their community. The initiative reflects the global effort to enable the most vulnerable communities to better prepare for, respond to and recover from climate shocks and stresses. Climate extremes - becoming more frequent and intense as the climate changes - particularly threaten the well-being of rural populations engaged in smallholder agriculture. Extreme events such as heavy rains and droughts have a long-term effect on their income and food security. As this desk study shows, in Tigray, R4 can be con- sidered a good practice as it mitigates drought impacts on food and income security. It contributes to securing productive assets during droughts and increasing savings, loans as well as opportunities for income diversification during good seasons. Besides, R4 resulted to be particularly empowering for female farmers: They have become more food secure and managed to maintain and accumulate more productive assets than the control group. Moreover, female R4 farmers have been more prone to use credits and diversify their income sources.

Abstract: While there have been studies of women's roles in African societies and of Atlantic history, the role of women in West and West Central Africa during the period of the Atlantic slave trade and its abolition remains relatively unexamined. This book brings together scholars from Africa, North and South America and Europe to show, for the first time, the ways in which African women participated in economic, social and political spaces in Atlantic coast societies. Focusing on diversity and change, and going beyond the study of wealthy merchant women, the contributors examine the role of petty traders and enslaved women in communities from Sierra Leone to Benguela. They analyse how women in Africa used the opportunities offered by relationships with European men, Christianity and Atlantic commerce to negotiate their social and economic positions; consider the limitations which early colonialism sought to impose on women and the strategies they employed to overcome them; the factors which fostered or restricted women's mobility, both spatially and socially; and women's economic power and its curtailment.

Abstract: An ethnography of the development and travel of the New Zealand model of neoliberal welfare reform, this study explores the social life of policy, which is one of process, motion, and change. Different actors, including not only policy e´lites but also providers and recipients, engage with it in light of their own resources and knowledge. Drawing on two analytic frameworks of the contemporary anthropology of policy-translation and assemblage-Kingfisher situates policy as an artifact and architect of cultural meaning, as well as a site of power struggles. All points of engagement with policy.

Abstract: Janet Afary is a native of Iran and a leading historian. Her work focuses on gender and sexuality and draws on her experience of growing up in Iran and her involvement with Iranian women of different ages and social strata. These observations, and a wealth of historical documents, form the kernel of this book, which charts the history of the nation's sexual revolution from the nineteenth century to today. What comes across is the extraordinary resilience of the Iranian people, who have drawn on a rich social and cultural heritage to defy the repression and hardship of the Islamist state and its predecessors. It is this resilience, the author concludes, which forms the basis of a sexual revolution taking place in Iran today, one that is promoting reforms in marriage and family laws, and demanding more egalitarian gender and sexual relations. Abstract: This volume brings together new research on South Asia women who have renounced worldly life for spiritual pursuits. Documenting contemporary women's experiences with ethnographic narratives, this book offers feminist insights into Jain, Buddhist, Hindu and Baul ascetic traditions. With intricate narrative documenting contemporary women's experiences, contributors explore the lives of women who have renounced involvements such as sex, financial security, kin, and the pursuit of beauty, in favour of higher religious and spiritual ideals. The authors consider the hardship endured by women committed to religioos paths more commonly taken by men and warn against any easy romanticization of these womens's lives. At the same time, the book offers a refreshing antidote to the relentless image of South Asian women as dependent on male kins and defined by their secual and procreativesroles.

Abstract: The South Indian state of Kerala is well known for its progressive policy, high social indicators and comparatively high women's status. Processes of modernization, however, have had an ambiguous impact on women. This study of female cashew factory workers in Kerala combines meticulous historical investigation with anthropological research, including a wealth of in-depth interviews. The author traces changes since the 1930s in gender relations among low-caste men and women by examining processes of modernization in the organization of work, trade union activities, and ideologies regarding marriage and family life. Her main conclusion is that, although women have obtained better absolute conditions at work and in society, the power discrepancy between low-caste men and women has increased in favour of men because low-caste women have gone through a process of effeminization; they are now seen as weaker and more dependent on men than in earlier decades

Abstract: In the 1990s the former states of the Soviet Union underwent dramatic and revolutionary changes. As a result of enforced, neo-liberal reforms the fledgling republics were exposed to the familiar effects of globalised capital. Focusing on Kazakhstan, where violence and corruption are now facts of everyday life, Joma Nazpary examines the impact of the new capitalism on the people of Central Asia. Using in-depth interviews and material gathered over more than a year's fieldwork, Nazpary explores the responses of the dispossessed to their dispossession. He uncovers the construction of 'imagined communities', grounded in Soviet nostalgia, which serve to resist the economic order, as well as the more practical survival strategies, especially of women, often forced into prostitution where they are subject to violence and stigma. By revealing the extent to which Kazakh society has disintegrated and the cultural responses to it, Nazpary argues that dispossession has been a stronger unifying force than even ethnicity or religion. Comparing the effects of neo-liberal reforms in Kazakhstan with those in other regions, he concludes that causes, forms and consequences of dispossession in Kazakhstan are particular instances of a much wider global trend.

Abstract: The literatur on Africa is dominated by accounts of crisis, doom and gloom, but this book presents one or the few long-running success stories. Thomas Bassett, a distinguished American geographer well known in the field of development, tells an unsusual story of the growth of the cotton economy of West Africa, where change was brought about by tens of thousands of small-scale peasants farmers. While the introduction of new strains of cotton in francophone West Africa was in part the result of agronomic research by French scientists, supported by an unusually efficient marketing structure, this is not a case of triumphant top-down "plantification". Employing the case of Côte d'Ivoire, Professor Bassett shows agricultural intensification to result from the cumulative effect of decades of incremental changes in farming techniques and social organization. A significant contribution of the literature, the book demonstrated the need to consider the local and temporal dimension of agricultural innovations. It brings into question many key assumptions that have influenced develpoment policies during the twentieth century. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: This collection of essays on the family in India by the distinguished sociologist Professor A. M. Shah covers a wide range of theoretical methodological, substantive and policy issues. Examining both academic and popular literature with a view to bringing about a clarity of discourse, Professor Shah's work challenges many popularly held beliefs about the family in India. Though an examination of census records, data collected in the field over long periods of time, and a clarifying of concepts and issues, Professor Shah shows how the widely accepted paradigm of change form joint to nuclear family is highly simplistic and pleads for a more realistic appraisal of change. Conceptually, Professor Shah distinguishes between "houshold" and "family" which leads to a richer and more precise discussion of inter- and intra-houshold family relations. The book includes chapters on spouse selection which place in a dynamic perspective, the traditional rule of caste endogamy as welll as the modern idea of freedom of choice in marriage. Also included is an essay on family policy wihch looks at such questions as family planning, care of the aged, the position of the girl child, and an uniform civil code.

Abstract: What does it mean to think critically about politics at a time when inequality is increasing worldwide, when struggles for the recognition of difference are eclipsing struggles for social equality, and when we lack any credible vision of an alternative to the present order? Philosopher Nancy Fraser claims that the key is to overcome the false oppositions of "postsocialist" commonsense. Refuting the view that we must choose between "the politics of recognition" and the "politics of redistribution," Fraser argues for an integrative approach that encompasses the best aspects of both. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: The Sudan, the largest county in Africa, is undergoing a period of rapid, often dramatic, change. Political strife, ecological disasters, and economic crises have overtaken many of its people, leading to widespread population movement, urban growth, inflation, and social unrest. The live of Sudanese women particularly are becoming very different as they assume new roles and responsibilities in response to altered circumstances.Susan Kenyon looks at developments in Sudanese society through the eyes and words of five women from the town of Sennar in Blue Nile Province. She illustrates the stengths and stability of local community and family life through the careers of a hairdresser, a market woman, a midwife, a holy woman, and a leader of a spirit possession cult. These women talk about their families and homes, their work and their social lives, their hopes and aspiration. Their accounts offer insight into contemporary life in a major developing country and the changing role of women within its society. (Umschlagtext)
