Kurzfassung: Presenting a trenchant critique of America's political culture and its China policy, Radha Sinha explains the reasons for the mismatch between professed American values and the practice of statecraft by the American power elite. He examines the ways in which their relentless search for enemies has led the United States to violate the norms of international law at will, thus causing increasing disenchantment sometimes bordering on hatred

Kurzfassung: Crick and Watson's discovery of the structure of DNA fifty years ago marked one of the great turning points in the history of science. Biology, immunology, medicine and genetics have all been radically transformed in the succeeding half-century, and the double helix has become an icon of our times. This fascinating exploration of a scientific phenomenon provides a lucid and engaging account of the background and context for the discovery, its significance and afterlife, while a series of essays by leading scientists, historians and commentators offers uniquely individual perspectives on DNA and its impact on modern science and society

Kurzfassung: Juhana Aunesluoma considers the ways in which Scandinavia's, in particular neutral Sweden's, relationship was forged with the Western powers after the Second World War. He argues that during the early cold war Britain had a special role in Scandinavia and in the ways in which Western oriented neutrality became a part of the international system. New evidence is presented on British, American and Swedish foreign and defence policies regarding neutrality in the cold war

Kurzfassung: Written by leading authorities from Europe, the Americas and Asia, this path-breaking work develops an innovative and original theorization of global political economy. Whilst most approaches theorize global political economy from the perspectives of power and production or states and markets, this work argues that what feminists call social reproduction is a more basic framework, upon which most forms of power and production, and states and markets, must necessarily rest. By combining Feminist and Radical Political Economy with Critical International Studies, the volume explores how global transformations of states, growth in the power of capital, and extension of market values and market forces in everyday life, all affect the security of the majority of the population, and the reproduction of communities and societies. The book shows how public and private forms of power regulate three main aspects of social reproduction: biological reproduction; reproduction of labour power; and social practices connected to caring and provisioning of human needs

Not only has it become more visible than in the past, its sheer scale in some countries has had a significant impact on the functioning of their political institutions. Martin Bull and James Newell have assembled a group of experts to address the importance of this phenomenon for contemporary Western democracies - as well as for the new democracies of Eastern Europe, for the European Union and at the international level

In turn, the difficulties in applying the Western recipe for peace to the new security challenges of a globalizing world is threatening to destroy the international community. Kurzfassung: This is the first book length assessment of the executive agency revolution in UK central government, part of the New Public Management, with 65 per cent of civil servants now working in agencies. The 'Next Steps' reformers' public interest view suggested value for money improvements. However, original analysis of budgets, performance data, documents and interviews reveals some support for an alternative 'bureau-shaping' perspective from rational choice, with officials using the reform to protect their welfare and substantial performance problems, especially in 'joining-up' government

Kurzfassung: Electoral Systems and Political Transformation in Post-Communist Europe assesses the influence of electoral systems on political change in 20 post-communist European states. The main finding is that electoral institutions have systematic effects on the formation of representative structures. 'Party-enabling' aspects of electoral laws such as list proportional representation tend to foster popular inclusion in politics and institutionalized party systems, whereas 'politician-enabling' rules such as single-member districts and ballots that allow voters to select individuals often favour the development of weakly structured systems and high levels of popular exclusion from the representative process

Exploring issues in cases of diverse social justice movements, the contributors show that a global civil society is still far from emerging and its promotion may even harm the realization of grassroots democracy. The Internet is an exciting new means for activists to communicate internationally, and citizens' movements increasingly co-ordinate campaigns through transnational advocacy networks, but most effective civic action still takes place at national and local levels

Kurzfassung: This book highlights the role that national culture plays in shaping the emergent relationship between IT and organisations. It also shows the mechanisms through which national culture influences IT use. Although a number of studies have investigated relationships between IT and organisations, relatively few studies have conducted international comparisons on the theme, and even fewer have focused on national culture in their analytical framework. The book is based on extensive research undertaken with British and Japanese manufacturing companies, providing evidence that national culture does influence organisational IT use.

Kurzfassung: Women and the Colonial Gaze examines the way images of women have been used by colonizers and subject peoples to define the colonial relationship. Unique features include essays on pre-modern imperialism, colonization within Europe, imperialism by non-European powers, and intellectual imperialism by authors and scholars. These essays suggest that gender's use as a tool in the imperialist context is much older and more comprehensive than previously suggested. Using methodology drawn from several scholarly disciplines, the essays encourage comparative assessment of gender and imperialism.

Kurzfassung: During the last fifteen years Latin American governments reformed their constitutions to recognize indigenous rights. The contributors to this book argue that these changes post fundamental challenges to accepted notions of democracy, citizenship and development in the region. Using case studies from Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia and Peru, they analyze the ways in which new legal frameworks have been implemented, appropriated and contested within a wider context of accelerating economic and legal globalization, highlighting the key implications for social policy, human rights and social justice.

Kurzfassung: This book is the first detailed examination of death in early modern Ireland. It deals with the process of dying, the conduct of funerals, the arrangement of burials, the private and public commemoration of the dead, and ideas about the afterlife. It further considers ways in which the living fashioned ceremonies of death and the reputations of the dead to support their own ends. It will be of interest to those concerned with Irish history and death studies generally.

Kurzfassung: This book explores the contemporary nature of Max Weber's work by looking in detail at his key concepts of rationalization and disenchantment. Thematic parallels are drawn between Weber's rationalization thesis and the critiques of contemporary culture developed by Jean-Francois Lyotard, Michel Foucault and Jean Baudrillard. It is suggested that these three 'postmoden' thinkers develop and respond to Weber's analysis of modernity by pursuing radical strategies of affirmation and re-enchantment. Examining the work of these three key thinkers in this way casts new light both on postmodern theory and on Weber's sociology of rationalization.

Kurzfassung: What insights can we gain from the social sciences about the role memory plays in creating or re-creating the many conflicts threatening global peace in the twenty-first century? Indeed, can knowledge about the relationship between memory and conflict help resolve intergroup conflicts and heal individual hurts? This book presents a series of essays both theoretical and empirical that approach these questions from a variety of disciplines that will highlight a much-neglected aspect of one of the major problems facing the world today.

Kurzfassung: The process of transition in Eastern European countries is one in which ideas of the past and present, both local and Western, meet and conflict. Presenting a wealth of new ethnographic and interview-based research, Critical Management Research in Eastern Europe argues that the reform process in Central and Eastern Europe has been dominated by the traditional 'Western' view of management practice. However, this approach overlooks the fact that certain managerial and organizational practices developed in Central and Eastern Europe may still be appropriate and indeed effective within this particular setting. The book brings together authors from both East and West Europe to evaluate how the two systems can best be harmonized, which is particularly important in the context of EU enlargement.

Kurzfassung: The 'body' and 'discourse' seem diametrically opposed, but we interact with our bodies and represent ourselves and our relationships in bodily terms. This volume integrates new studies by leading researchers in sociolinguistics, sociology, social psychology and cultural theory. It explores the many interfaces of body and discourse, organized under three main themes: the body as an interactional resource; ideological representations of the body; and discursive constructions of the body in normal and pathological contexts.

Kurzfassung: From 1993-1995 the People's Republic of China undertook a series of reforms designed to modernise their banking and financial systems, the process of financial intermediation and to implement a sound and credible monetary policy in China. They based these reforms on the Federal Reserve System in the USA. This book analyses these reforms and assesses the effectiveness of the monetary policy that was put in place and shows whether it can withstand China's accession to the WTO.

Kurzfassung: In this collection, four philosophers and four economists consider the Third Volume of Marx's Capital. The essays take up each of the major themes of Volume III - competition, for formation and development of the general rate of profit, the credit system and finance capital, rent, the Trinity formula and the concept of class - and consider them in the light of the two previous volumes. The authors share a focus on the concept of social form in Marx's work and on the method of his argument. The collection is intended both for specialists in Marxian theory and for students of the history of economic thought and of methodology.

Kurzfassung: In recent years the UK's macroeconomic policy framework has undergone a period of radical reform so as to deliver the economic stability necessary to achieve high levels of growth and employment. This book provides a comprehensive account of these reforms, which constitute a new and innovative approach to policy making. Radical changes to the monetary policy framework, the fiscal policy framework, the regime for public spending and financial regulation are presented. Together they represent a coherent strategy to deliver economic stability and benefits to the wider economy. As well as providing an unprecedented insight into UK Government economic policy, the book takes the reader through the intellectual foundations of policy reform and the translation of these to applied policy making. Reforming Britain's Economic and Financial Policy contains a foreword by the Chancellor, Gordon Brown.

It re-evaluates the role and function of Japan's commercial banks among its corporate groupings and proves that the behaviour of banks heading corporate groups has characterized the economic system, and that the banks could not have established a long-term capital lending business until the beginning of the 1970s.

Kurzfassung: In the postsoviet decade Russian railways remained highly centralised, evaded the upheavals of mass privatisation, and remained the backbone of a demoralised economy. Preserving much of Soviet practice, the Railways Ministry mounted a skilled rearguard action that achieved a gradual and considered adaptation to the market economy rather than the pell-mell, western-orientated, liberalisation that afflicted other branches of the economy. This book describes that rearguard action, and goes on to show how railway managers are coping with the new conditions.

Kurzfassung: An economy does not always work according to idealized textbook models. Frequently, economic systems are subject to wide-ranging distortions and require remedy via subsidy and taxes to restore their social optimum. In The Distorted Economy, Hans C. Blomqvist and Mats Lundahl describe how to tackle the various distortions on goods and factor markets and apply their analytic framework to several case studies such as the trade policy of developing countries, apartheid in South Africa and socialist planned economies. The authors offer an important and timely analysis of the cause, effect and resolution of distortions in the economy.

Kurzfassung: Developing countries undergoing economic crises have traditionally followed economic restructuring programmes that are based on the premise that private investment recovery is assured once the market is allowed to prevail. There is little regard for the micro-level unit - the 'investing-firm' - in this process, the conditions that characterize the product and factor markets and the positioning of the firm at the outset of adjustment. This book focuses on the firm and its experience in the restructuring process within the context of a heterogenous private sector.

Kurzfassung: The transformation in Chinese social theory in the twentieth century placed the rural-urban divide at the centre of individual identity. In 1500, such distinctions were insignificant and it was the emergence of political reforms in the early 1920s and 1930s which separated cities and towns as agents of social change and encouraged a perception of rural backwardness. This interdisciplinary collection traces the development and distinctions between urban and rural life and the effect on the Chinese sense of identity from the sixteenth century to the present day. It provides a daunting example of the influence that political ideology may exert on an individual's sense of place

Kurzfassung: A great deal of economics is about law - the functioning of markets, property rights and their enforcement, financial obligations, and so forth - yet these legal aspects are almost never addressed in the academic study of economics. Conversely, the study and practice of law entails a significant understanding of economics, yet the drafting and administration of laws often ignore economic principle. The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and the Law is uniquely placed by the quality, breadth and depth of its coverage to address this need for building bridges. Drawn from the ranks of academics, professional lawyers, and economists in eight countries, the 340 contributors include world experts in their fields. Among them are Nobel laureates in economics and eminent legal scholars. First published in 1998 and now available in paperback for the first time, The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and the Law has established itself as a classic reference work in this important field

Kurzfassung: This book explores the key issues of racism, anti-racism and identity in British football. It relates the history of black players in the game, analyses the racism they have experienced, and evaluates the efficacy of anti-racist campaigns. The efficacy of the policing of racism is also assessed. The nationalism and xenophobia evident in much of the media's coverage of major tournaments is highlighted in the context of the way that English, Scottish and Welsh identities are constructed within British football.

Kurzfassung: This collection brings together leading political scientists in order to address the challenges faced by democracy in the twenty-first century. The contributors tackle the changing nature of democratic ideas, in particular equality in society and the satisfaction of citizens. They examine changing patterns of political involvement, from voting to new forms of participation and protest using the Internet and new technologies. Finally, they look at the challenge to democracy posed by the changing nature of state institutions: party systems, bureaucracy and e-government, regulation and the processes of institutional development.

Kurzfassung: What did French intellectuals have to say about Gaullism, the Cold War colonialism, the women's movement, and the events of May '68? David Drake examines the political commitment of intellectuals in France from Sartre and Camus to Bernard-Henri Lévy and Bourdieu. In this accessible study, he explores why there was a radical reassessment of the intellectual's role in the mid 1970s-80s and how a new generation engaged with Islam, racism, the Balkan Wars and the strikes of 1995.

Kurzfassung: Eudine Barriteau exposes the precarious position of women in twentieth century Caribbean societies through analyzing the operations of gender systems. She reveals the absence of gender justice and equity, and demonstrates that after twenty-five years of policies on women, Caribbean societies still have not confronted the fundamental problem of women's subordination and the conditions that maintain this. The strategies used by developing states to focus on women are criticised as inadequate and it is recommended that state and society pay more attention to understanding the lives of women.

Kurzfassung: People move, individually and collectively, for a combination of economic, social, political and cultural reasons. The impact of migration on the individuals concerned, their families, the countries they leave and the societies they join raises issues that are hotly contested by academics, policymakers and politicians. By using a wide variety of analytical approaches the contributors to this book reveal the complexity and significance of this increasingly important phenomenon in Western European countries, which links these societies to the wider world. They engage directly with the challenge which human mobility represents by examining the reasons for migration, the contribution and needs of those migrating, and the ways in which public debate about migration may be manipulated for political reasons.

Kurzfassung: This book looks at how sociological concepts that were first 'invented' and applied to describe social inequality in Europe were also used to understand and explain inequality in the United States. However, under very different circumstances and conditions the concepts needed to be adjusted - either through changing their precise meaning or by using related concepts. In Concepts of Social Stratification the author tries to analyse this change by looking at how some of the most prominent American sociologists have tried to conceptualise their own society while at the same time addressing the complex relationship between an assumed political equality and de facto social inequality.

Kurzfassung: This volume assesses one of the most important developments in contemporary Latin American women's movements: the engagement with rights-based discourses. Organised women have played a central role in the continued struggle for democracy in the region and with it gender justice. The foregrounding of human rights, and within them the recognition of women's rights, has offered women a strategic advantage in pursuing their goals of an inclusive citizenship. The country-based chapters analyse specific bodies of rights: rights and representation, domestic violence, labour rights, reproductive rights, legal advocacy, socio-economic rights, rights and ethnicity, and rights, the state and autonomy.

Kurzfassung: Developments in the European Union over the last decade have been largely positive from the perspective of stateless and minority ethnic groups and the survival and prosperity of minority languages. This selection of sociologically and ethnographically oriented work enables the reader to compare developments in different ethno-linguistic revival movements within the European Union. The contributions also explore the impact of EU policy and discourse on the individual movements and the orientation of Western Europe as a whole towards linguistic heterogeneity and cultural diversity. A companion volume (0-333-92924-1) examines the status of minority languages in post-1989 Eastern Europe.

Kurzfassung: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the emergence, consolidation and development of the Irish women's movement, as a social movement, in the course of the twentieth century. It seek to address several lacunae in Irish studies by illuminating the processes through which the movement and, in particular, networks of constituent organisations, came to fruition as agencies of social change. The central argument advanced is that when viewed historically, the Irish women's movement is characterised by its interconnectedness and continuity: the central tensions, themes and organising strategies of the movement connects diverse organisations and constituencies, over time and space. This book will be essential reading for those interested in Irish studies, sociology, history, women's studies, and politics.

Kurzfassung: This work explores the significance which contemporary club cultures can have for women at a time when femininity is undergoing radical reconstruction. The book focuses upon the experiential accounts given by a range of 'raving' and clubbing women and illustrates how new (and, in some respects, more appropriate to our times) fictions of femininity are generated within these accounts. Club cultures can, it is argued, come to provide important sites for the exploration of new ways of being women-in-culture. Focus upon these more subjective and experiential aspects reveals that today's dance cultures have much to offer women, and a lot more to say about femininity than is usually acknowledged. This suggests the limitations of much contemporary club culture criticism which concludes that because men tend to dominate at the levels of production and organisation, today's club cultures signal a sexual-political step backwards.

Kurzfassung: Young Women and the Body sets out to examine why the current generation of young women seem to be deeply unhappy with their own bodies. Dieting and disguising are commonplace, and inflicting serious harm by no means rare in fourteen to eighteen year olds. Despite prophesies to the contrary boys and adults are suffering far less. Drawing on feminist social constructionist perspectives the book seeks to examine this epidemic of body-hatred.

Kurzfassung: The main argument of this book is that the revival of European integration in the mid-1980s and the emergence of a 'New Europe' have to be analysed against the background of globalisation and the transnational restructuring of social forces since the early 1970s. The book brings together a range of diverse - but similar - critical perspectives that draw from the work of Antonio Gramsci to provide an alternative to established neo-functionalist and intergovernmentalist approaches. It is argued that these critical perspectives can more adequately analyse various aspects of European integration within the recent context of globalisation.

Kurzfassung: Hella Engerer analyses the emergence, evolution and theory of property rights and establishes the limits for privatization of state owned enterprises in the transitional economies of Eastern Europe. She counters the assumption that reduction of the state sector helps to create the basis for a private property system, showing that privatization actually presupposes a stable framework including property order. She makes use of an outstanding methodological approach, reaching well beyond the limits of pure economic observation. This is a major contribution to the understanding of the emerging economic order of Central and Eastern Europe.

Kurzfassung: We live in an information society. Or so we are told. Access to unlimited information will promote equality for all. But is the information society really going to be like this? Who is going to reap the rewards of new information and communication technologies? Focusing on a theme of exclusion, Access Denied in the Information Age dispels the myths of the information society. The authors here take a few steps back from the hype and consider the real place of these new technologies in society.

Kurzfassung: A collection of new, scholarly articles on the Jewish Workers' Bund - the first modern Jewish political party in Eastern Europe - written by prominent academics from eight countries. This work represents a broad range of perspectives, Jewish and non-Jewish, sympathetic to the Bund and critical of its work. The articles in this volume are fresh, make use of previously unused source material, and provide us with new perspectives on the significance of the Bund and its ideas.

Kurzfassung: This pioneering study captures the traditional social, economic and political systems of the Arab sheikhdoms of the Gulf. It represents a unique and in-depth insight into the complex and varied cultural patterns of the Arabs, Persians and the people of the East African Coast in the 1950s, before the advent of oil wealth radically altered the style of life and expectations of the people living in these sheikdoms. In a compelling narrative Lienhardt discusses the tribal structure, relations between men and women, the economics of pearl fishing, the growth of towns and the complex relationship between the ruling sheikhs and their subjects. His findings offer a key to the understanding of the political system and the transition from the tribal to the class system. Specialists on the Gulf and Middle East, social historians and anthropologists will find a wealth of new evidence and analysis in this invaluable and accessible combination of history and anthropology.
