Abstract: The book "Interdisciplinary visions of Europe and the World", is a tribute to Maria Manuela Tavares Ribeiro. This timely tribute is the just recognition of her work and her intellectual and human dimension. This work represents a sample, on the one hand, of the diversity within the Europeanism, Atlanticity and Globalization Group, and on the other, of how it is possible to establish interdisciplinary bridges between the many scientific areas represented in the research group. To embark on an interdisciplinary adventure is to depart from our comfort zone. It is an adventure, because the path can be winding, the difficulties are often greater than were expected, and the result is normaly unpredictable. It generates discomfort, because the practice of interdisciplinarity obliges us to understand different languages, to explain several times what seems obvious, to consensualize concepts, to negotiate methods, to compromise in principles that were considered, from the point of view of each science, unquestionable

Abstract: This volume provides an interdisciplinary, multifaceted view of a key period of the making and remaking of the European artistic, cultural and political landscape at the turn from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century. It focus on the relationships between Lisbon and Turin as a prime analyzer of the main forms of sociability and circulation of objects, knowledge, tastes, styles of government and public policies upon which a new European geopolitical panorama was erected, extending as well to the overseas territories. The variety of approaches deployed in the volume are unified by a broad notion of cultural history which includes on an equal footing the visual and the scientific, the material and the political culture. The studies in this volume underline the crucial importance of the transfer of tastes and habitus, and the associated emergence of new forms of sensibility, in shaping the transition from Enlightenment to the Post-Napoleonic Europe

Abstract: In recent years, the relationship with knowledge has undergone profound changes due to the expansion of digital technologies and interactive communication networks. Most people have experienced intense use of these technologies, which has directly affected their mental and social structures. The cognitive abilities of the subjects, in these digital grafocentric societies, require new and differentiated teaching-learning processes. Such clarity then requires different perspectives in analyzing the educational world, which is quite different - in the face of new audiences, new needs and new possibilities. Being and emerging and embryonic theme, there are still many gaps in this area's scientific literature, lacking new reflections and studies. Thus, the present work seeks to contribute to discussions of specific and necessary themes for this new vision of education, which aims at developing in its students varied interdisciplinary skills, adequate to the demands of the present millennium. This book aims to meet the interests of those who think or do quality education, exploiting the potential of emerging technologies

Abstract: This publication was the result of the communications and debates at the First Luso-Brazilian Seminar: Pedagogy, Online Learning and Digital Technologies in Higher Education, carried out by the Group of educational policies and educational dynamics (GRUPOEDE) of the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of the 20th Century (CEIS20). by the Mobile Research Unit in Local Studies (ELO) of the Open University and by the Porto Delegation of the same University, which was held in Coimbra in May 2017. This meeting was a space for the exchange of experiences and reflection around the emerging learning environments, based on digital technologies in the context of higher education. Starting from distance or face-to-face teaching, the various chapters discuss the impact of digital learning on the construction of teaching processes, the construction of a differentiated didactics, the emergence of new educational paradigms, but above all, they seek to map ways of innovation that are being built and consolidated in Portugal and Brazil

Abstract: Plutarch distinguishes Alexander king of Macedonia as a genius in military art and diplomacy to consolidate his power. During his life, just a little more than 30 years, the young king changed the political and cultural map of his time: he put a large European, African, and Asiatic space under his authority, promoted an intercultural globalisation to unify a multiplicity of peoples as a huge empire, and transferred the intellectual centre of the world from Athens to other oriental cities. But an unmeasured ambition harmed all his project and even its author’s life. By pairing Caesar with Alexander, Plutarch brings out the fame of a great conqueror, the aspect of personality that the biographer most admires in this Roman statesman. But the ambition (philotimia) that repeatedly moves Caesar represents the black side that will lead him to the death, before he can reap the fruits of his eagerness. Although not completely transforming Caesar into a cruel tyrant (which he was not), this Life illustrates, however, a criticism of the exacerbated and irrational ambition of power

Abstract: The book "History, Digital Technologies and Mobile Learning: Teaching History in the Digital Age" presents us with a set of reflections about the relationship between History, Education and Technologies, with particular attention to teaching History through mobile technologies. These are current, important and necessary reflections, especially when we consider the conditions we have experienced in the context of digital culture. Based on a theoretical-experimental study, the friends and researchers Sara Dias-Trindade and Joaquim Carvalho offer us an exquisite critical-reflexive and propositive analysis on some possibilities of incorporating digital information and communication technologies in the teaching-learning process in the area of Story. It is the coroation of an intense work and commitment of the authors to contribute as much to the area of Education and Technologies as to its base area: History. Certainly, with this fruit of their efforts, the scientific and educational community gained a lot. [Daniel Mill]

Abstract: With contributions by some of the leading Portuguese and Spanish speaking experts in the philosophy of J. G. Fichte (1762-1814), this book focuses mainly the relation between the universality of human reason postulated by transcendental philosophy, of which Fichte is the main representative between Kant and Husserl, and its translation into concrete political, historical and cultural forms. The collected texts include significant references to the entire Fichte’s work, extending from the Rectification of the Public's Judgment on the French Revolution of 1793, until the revaluation of the importance of the role of Religion and History in the Theory of State, of 1813; between those milestones, the collected studies consider both the classic of the rational theory of the State and Law, the Fundamentals of Natural Law of 1797, and the classic at the basis of German linguistic and cultural nationalism, the Adresses to the German Nation, of 1807. The relationship between Philosophy and Law, the rational foundation of the legitimacy of State power, the relationship between Morals and Law, Human History, Revolution, Christianity, war or despotism, are issues whose discussion at the dawn of the contemporary world marked our time indelibly

Abstract: The Book of Medical Biophysics. Practical exercises intends to be an auxiliary for the study of this matter. It constitutes the compilation of the exercises developed by the set of assistants since the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra has decided to invest in specific training in biophysics. The issues for which problems have been made relate to 3 chapters: mass transport through membranes, fluids and radioactivity. All problems developed are aimed at biomedical applications, and assist in the practical comprehension of the same themes presented in the book Biophysics Medical, authored by João José Pedroso de Lima, also published by the Coimbra University Press and representing the recommended book for the discipline. In fact, the theoretical explanations are even referred to this book. In all chapters there are problems resolved and commented, other problems for which solutions are present and yet another type that are proposed problems, but no solution presented. We hope that this book will be a good helper for the study of biophysics

Abstract: From a first attempt to gather fundamental bibliography for anthropological research in Angola came out in 1983 an interim text. With the contribution of more collaborators and completing and updating this first text now comes this version of "Angola: anthropological bibliography", a working tool that we hope will be useful to many of our research colleagues. The print run has been purposely limited as an update as possible permanent. In this sense all suggestions and possible corrections will be welcomed so that all Africanists who are interested in anthropological research about Angola is available a working tool which is not exhaustive already represents very diverse information in the field of anthropological sciences. In addition to renewing its thanks to her first-hour colleague, Isilda Figueiras, I want to extend them to the researchers who have joined this work and have contributed, each with their share, to the preparation of this bibliography. Abstract: Book VII of the Greek Anthology gathers a total of 748 epigrams that are, in general, epitaphs. Planudes copied 582 of them, of which eleven are not in the Palatinus, and it is uncertain why he excluded the other 179 copied in P. In the form of a dialog or not, since its origins the epitaph stages, even if implicitly, an ephemeral connexion between the deceased and the one who reads it. It is about immortalisation, about the dead keeping a link, by means of memory (mnema), with the world of the livings, achieved when his name is pronounced by the passer-by that reads it in the grave

Abstract: The tendency of 21st century studies about the table has been to privilege as multi and transdisciplinary approaches. In fact, it is in its holistic sense that we use the term table, a universe that encompasses goods, people and ideas. Reflect today toward the table constitutes a process of careful inquiry into three of the main pillars of the man’s relationship with food, throughout its history: food, health and culture. This book is the subject of Lusophone Tables and is organized in two volumes, containing five parts and a total of 25 chapters. The 13 chapters of the first volume focus on two central themes: food under the therapeutic and symbolic prism. In Part I (Therapeutic Tables: when food is medicine), it is evident that, historically, medical writings preceded the culinary literature. Part II (Sacred Tables: when food is a symbol) is referred to the table as answer and vehicle of dialogue with the transcendent

Abstract: Urban heritage took four hundred years to establish itself as a cultural asset to be safeguarded and evolved along an historicalsocial process, rooted in the idea that urban sets and monumental architecture are part of the same category of historical values. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the notion of heritage stretched up and reached an urban dimension, but its social and political understanding did not release itself from theories and practices of intervention and safeguard action established within the architectural dimension from which came from. Aiming to contain change, they continue to resist to accept that change it is part of the nature of cities and to integrate it into the very meaning of the urban dimension of heritage. After all, of what do we talk about when we talk about urban heritage? Arising from various stimuli, this question guided the texts gathered here. They were written with different disciplinary perspectives because the measure that differentiates the urban dimension of heritage and architectural dimension is not metric or geometric. It is ontological and can only be understood in an integrated manner. In development, of course

Abstract: Egyptian coffin decoration is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon with its own history and evolution. ‘Yellow’ coffins were crafted in Thebes during a particular critical period in the Egyptian History, witnessing to a situation of political unrest and severe economic scarcity affecting Egypt, the Near East and the Mediterranean. And yet, there is no evidence for a decline in the production of these outstanding funerary artefacts. On the contrary, the corpus of ‘yellow’ coffins outnumbers the previous types of Egyptian anthropoid containers and stands out among the most complex and sophisticated objects ever crafted in the Ancient World. Besides this historical paradox, the ‘yellow’ corpus presents important epistemological challenges for our understanding of Egyptian material culture: what kind of space is created within the walls and forms of an anthropoid coffin? What role plays variability and change in this process? Last but not the least, can we understand the meaning behind the multiple shapes and endless variations adopted in coffin decoration during this period? This book addresses these questions presenting the results of a comparative study on coffin decoration involving an extensive sample of objects from the ‘yellow’ corpus dispersed in museums around the world. The results of this study reveal the principles of composition that ruled the work of the ancient Theban craftsmen and show how important coffin decoration was for the Theban priesthood of Amun to convey their own corporative values

Abstract: The book brings together seven essays on Cicero written by specialists in the Author. The essays are grouped into two sections: the first one presents papers on Cicero’s works (the dialogues: Lucullus, De finibus, De oratore, De officiis); the papers in the second one discuss on both the early and late reception of Cicero (in Seneca, Petrarch and Erasmus). The authors are professors from Brazilian (Adriano Scatolin, Bianca Fanelli Morganti, Elaine Cristine Sartorelli, Sidney Calheiros de Lima), French (Carlos Lévy) and Italian universities (Aldo Setaioli, Ermanno Malaspina). The book avoids traditional biographical approach, which tends to take the works of Cicero as a reliable witness of political and family events, sometimes distrusts them as a distorted picture of public and private actors. The essays here assembled also avoid conceiving Cicero’s works as either the Author’s profession of faith in a philosophical doctrine, or a tendentious presentation of the theses of philosophical schools. Instead, the contributors adopt another interpretative key, so that, when analyzing a philosophical dialogue of Cicero, instead of seeking references to its historical moment, focus on its controversial aspects (due to the dispute between the schools of philosophy), rhetorical aspects (the amplifying devices through which the Author compares the strength of one thesis with the weakness of another), fictional aspects (including the description of the scene and the picture of the characters). Thus, it can be said that the book seeks a more appropriate approach to Cicero’s works, not taking them as mere source of historical knowledge, but considering their historicity, that is, the devices for discursive production of their own time

Abstract: This Portuguese contribution to the debate on the concept of “Empire” brings together 17 essays covering various areas and periods across Antiquity. Biblical sources allow us to structure various categories and organize their related meanings as valuable paths to inform our understating of the idea of “Empire”. Egypt first serves as the opportunity to inquire the usefulness of “Empire” as a concept within the larger discussion of periodization in History, as well as the scope and limitations of its definitions, as the observed political dissolution in the Late New Kingdom shows. Regarding Ancient “Mesopotamian Empires”, the first “Empire” is usually attributed to the political formulas brought forth by the dynasty of Akkad, which emerged before the hegemony of Babylon. The underlying ideology to Hammurabi’s social and military policies through two crucial moments in Babylonian History provides the ground to analyze the emergence of its first hegemony: the war with Elam and the expedition to the Kingdom of Larsa. Approaches to the Anatolian and the Phoenician/Syrian-Palestinian territories follow a methodology focused on myth and religious narratives and the traces of political realities found there, as well as a reflection on the validity of “imperialism” when applied to the Phoenician colonial world. Later Mesopotamian imperial formulas are analyzed within the context of violence, military and ritual: on Jeremias and the rationale for a heavenly justified submission of Judah to the so-called “Neo-Babylonian Empire”; on Nabonidus, the last king of this dynasty; and on the diverging behavior of both Nabonidus and Cyrus to the cult of Marduk. Herodotus, a privileged source for the classical perception of eastern formulas, displays the Persian Empire as the background for different Greek political proposals at play (famously in 3.80-82), and informs us of the queenship and the queens of Ancient Persia. Moreover, the role and status of women in Hellenistic societies is further examined, most notably in its relations to power. The last four essays propose a conceptual genealogy for the idea of imperium through the Roman World: from the representation Ancient Historiography creates of the processes structuring Roman “imperialism” and their agents; the interpretation Suetonius proposes of imperial power and how it ought to be used; to the validity of a certain notion of “globalization” applied to the Late Roman expanse

Abstract: This book aims to frame the study of the different types of risk involving the intervention of civil protection agents, at the same time that it seeks to specify the meaning, in the Portuguese language, of some of the main concepts associated with risk theory and contributing to the definition of the methodology about the study of physical and human hazards, designed with a holistic character and therefore different from the parcelary analyses made by the science which contributes to the methodology of their respective specialties, whether it is natural sciences, social sciences and humanities or economic sciences. In this way and unlike these more specific sciences, which have a more specialised view and, therefore, also more in the risk, the sciences about the study of physical and human hazards seek to concentrate on the overall risk study, through a holistic view that encompasses the different types of manifestations because they materialize. In fact, only the sciences about the study of physical and human hazards possess all the risks as a central and unique object of study, involving all types and, also, their different phases of manifestation, from prevention to the recovery of areas where they have manifested themselves, and also their stakeholders, from the characters to the infrastructures, contrary to what happens to other sciences that consider the risks more as manifestations, which are studied only in aspects that relate to their specialty. Moreover, this approach about the study of physical and human hazards seeks to be global and systemic, that is, it tries to take into account all the elements that explain different types of risk, from its origin: natural, anthropic or mixed, to the consequences caused by its manifestation, both in people, in their goods and possessions. Finally, we consider that education is the most appropriate way to solve the problems resulting from the manifestation of risks, so that the technical-scientific knowledge, materialized in several knowledge, is fundamental for a properly sustained education. For all these reasons, the publication of this book aims to contribute to the knowledge about the study of physical and human hazards and, through it, to a better education and a greater resilience of the population to the manifestations of risk and, therefore, contribute to the reduction of the risk

Abstract: From the school year of 2012/2013, all the information that was part of the "Life of the Faculty" section, of Biblos Journal has an autonomous existence in digital format. Because it is considered relevant to preserve this memory and because it is understood that it should not integrate a scientific journal, this publication is created to the party, accessible to the internal and external public, which is hosted on theFaculty of Arts and Humanities website and on the University Press platforms. In this volume, information about the school year of 2017/2018 is gathered

Abstract: A viagem, outra vez a viagem, será assim tão importante a viagem? E desenhar

Abstract: The expression “poiesis of democracy” in the title refers to its central concern: to understand “democracy” not as a univocal and absolute concept, but as a result of historical permanencies and transformations inherent of both its Greek formulation and its contemporary uses, that is, as a problem whose answers derive from permanently meditated and mediated negotiation. Thus, the main problem dealt with in the volume is the analysis — preferably interdisciplinary and open to multiple theoretical methodological approaches — of the construction of the concept of Athenian democracy as a problematic political and cultural arena (and not as a goal, structure or program), perceptible in different authors and discourses of the classical period, as well as reflections that supplemented them throughout the fifth and fourth centuries BC

Abstract: Between 1592 and 1606, four jesuit professors from the College of Coimbra published a course of Aristotelian Philosophy, known by the title Commentarii Collegii Conimbricensis Societatis Jesu. Given its intrinsic value, he eventually knew a global influence: from the Atlantic to the Urals, the Far East and Latin America. Also some eminent philosophers (e.g. Descartes or Peirce) were readers of the work of Coimbra but, due to the numerous editions that the work met abroad, its overwhelming presence in the european university libraries, has determined the study of philosophy by thousands of students. Written in an accessible language, this monograph aims to give an updated, systematic and rigorous perspective of the main themes addressed in the work Coimbra – logic, physics, psychology, ethics and metaphysics – for the first time presented as «an exposition of philosophical science in a systematic, deductive and disputational form»

O livro prossegue a tetralogia anterior: 1.

Abstract: This book discusses the problem of the reception either of, or in, Thucydides' and Polybius' texts, examining its narrative, historiographical, literary and/or cultural perspectives. It is subdivided into eight meditations. The first meditation presents three methodological procedures (reception, mediation, comparison) which articulate the discussion about the main constituents (political failures, truths) of that problem along the other seven meditations

Abstract: At a time when the world watches in horror the unfolding drama of millions of refugees and the anxiety of identity figures prominently among globalization’s many side effects, this is certainly a very timely book, with contributions that address the momentous issues at hand in ways that are not just varied but also surprisingly illuminating. It seems only appropriate that the book starts and ends (“Whoever is not Greek is a barbarian”; “The Women of the Other and us”) with well contextualized, historical / theoretical reflexions on the unfailingly self-serving construction and ultimate appropriation of “the other”, be it the supposedly inarticulate savage of neighboring barbarian shores or the haunting background presence of Arab women - the barely acknowledged half of the West’s reified “Rest”. ln fact, although the chronological distance between the two historical moments is such as to discourage hasty generalizations, the continuities and the potential relevance are just too striking to be ignored.〈/p〉
