Abstract: 1993 entstand das !Xun & Khwe Art Project in einem Flüchtlingslager in Schmidtsdrift, Südafrika.

Abstract: "The Preoccupied: Indigenizing the Museum initiative at the Baltimore Museum of Art includes a publication that centers Native artist voices and challenges collective understandings of Native peoples’ pivotal role in North American history. The written and visual contributions address and refute the oppressive and pervasive hierarchies of colonialism upon which museums are based. The book features essays by heather ahtone (Chickasaw / Choctaw), Paul Chaat Smith (Comanche), and John Lukavic; newly commissioned poetry by Heid E. Erdrich (Ojibwe); a comic conceived, written, and illustrated by Weyodi Old Bear (Comanche), Dale Deforest (Diné), and Lee Francis IV (Pueblo of Laguna); and transcripts of roundtable discussions with contemporary Native artists. Fifty plates spanning a range of media from monographic and thematic exhibitions showcase both historically significant works from the BMA’s collection and the works of living artists, many of whom offer their perspectives in the catalog, including Julie Buffalohead (Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma), Dana Claxton (Lakota First Nations-Wood Mountain), Nicholas Galanin (Tlingit and Unangax̂), Duane Linklater (Omaskêko Ininiwak), Cannupa Hanska Luger (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, and Lakota / Three Affiliated Tribes of Fort Berthold), Alan Michelson (Mohawk / Six Nations of the Grand River), Caroline Monnet (Anishinaabe/French), Laura Ortman (White Mountain Apache), Kevin Pourier (Oglala Sioux), Rose B. Simpson (Santa Clara Pueblo), Kay WalkingStick (Cherokee Indian), and Dyani White Hawk (Sičáŋǧu Lakota). The work offers an important contribution to current global conversations around the decolonization of museums."--

Abstract: "It is well known that the Danes have a fantastic work-life balance, that working late is discouraged, parental leave is split equally, and long summer holidays are the norm. They even have a word meaning "happiness at work"—arbejdsglæde. Meanwhile, the rest of the western world is struggling with a burn-out epidemic—but where are we going wrong? Based on a new study from the Happiness Research Institute, Meik Wiking reveals the main factors that build happiness at work—purpose, trust, relationships, balance, and more—to show how we can reduce stress, increase productivity, and find fulfillment, both in and out of work"--Amazon.com

Abstract: Informed by ongoing research, this handsome publication features the work of artists connected with the Royal Academy in an exploration of migration, exchange, artistic traditions, identity and belonging. Contemporary and historical works are brought together as part of a conversation about art and its role in shaping narratives of empire, enslavement, abolition and colonialism, and how it may help set a course for the future. The life-size painted cut-out figures of Lubaina Himid's installation Naming the Money; Hew Locke's Armada, a flotilla of "votive boats" recalling different periods and places; paintings, photographs, sculptures, drawings and prints by Sonia Boyce, Frank Bowling, John Akomfrah, Isaac Julien, El Anatsui, Kerry James Marshall, Kara Walker, Shahzia Sikander, Mohini Chandra and Betye Saar; and historical works by artists such as Joshua Reynolds, J.M.W. Turner and John Singleton Copley create connections across time that examine questions of power, representation and history

Abstract: Using interdisciplinary research and critical analysis, this book examines experiences through (or with) kimonos in Britain during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Bringing new perspectives to challenge the existing model of "Japonisme in fashion" and introducing overlooked contacts between kimonos and people, this book explores not only fine arts and department stores but also a variety of theatres and cheap postcards. Putting a particular focus on the responses and reactions elicited by kimonos in visual, textual and material forms, this book initiates an entirely new discussion on the British adoption of Japanese kimonos beyond the monolithic view of the relationship between the East and West. This book will be of interest to scholars working in fashion studies, British studies, Japanese studies, design history and art history

Abstract: Spanish Fashion in the Age of Velázquez is the first archival study of dress at the court of Philip IV, as told through the life and work of royal tailor Mateo Aguado. Tailor to the queens of Spain from 1630 to 1672, Aguado designed the striking dresses that gave the Spanish court its distinctive look in the Baroque era. The most influential dress designer in the seventeenth-century Spanish world, Aguado was responsible for creating the iconic dresses that appear in some of Diego Velázquez’s most famous court portraits. Based on new research, this book brings to life the world of Aguado and his colleagues at court. The long-lost garments and accessories that the court artisans made for their royal employers are reconstructed here for the first time. Aguado’s creations played a crucial role in domestic and international politics by shaping the royal image, and his dresses took center-stage in major political events during Philip IV’s reign. Richly illustrated with well-known masterpieces along with surviving textiles and garments, the book explores how Aguado’s dress designs shaped a new vision of Spanish style, and Spanishness, that defined Golden-Age Spain
Abstract: "One of the most extreme periods of fashion history flourished at the Spanish court of Philip IV, where women were encaged in enormous bell-shaped farthingales and men wore tightly tailored garments and stiff starched collars. This book tells the story of this distinctive style of dress that was immortalized by Velázquez and Murillo"--

Abstract: Explores some of the dynamic, forward-facing artistic creations of Indigenous FuturismThe growing field of Indigenous Futurism eludes easy categorization, as suggested by this lavishly illustrated wide-ranging collection of essays and artworks from scholars, curators, and some of the fields most prominent artists. Exploring the fields main themes and the opportunities it holds for a more shared, just, and sustainable world, their writings offer a combination of scholarly, artistic, and first-person assessments of Indigenous Futurism as a creative and art historical field of consequence. At the same time, they speak to its interdisciplinary nature and its impact on subjects as diverse as film, fashion, science fiction, popular culture, and environmental science. Throughout these pages, we imagine future worlds grounded in culture, crafted with style, informed by experience, and unbound by colonial restraints. In these worlds are lessons for all of us, today

Grundlagen

Abstract: "For centuries, men have been writing histories of antiquity filled with warlords, emperors and kings. But when it comes to incorporating women aside from Cleopatra and Boudica, writers have been more comfortable describing mythical heroines than real ones. While Penelope and Helen of Troy live on in the imagination, their real-life counterparts have been relegated to the margins. In The Missing Thread, Daisy Dunn inverts this tradition and puts the women of history at the centre of the narrative. These pages present Enheduanna, the earliest named author, the poet Sappho and Telesilla, who defended her city from attack. Here is Artemisia, sole female commander in the Graeco-Persian Wars, and Cynisca, the first female victor at the Olympic Games. Cleopatra may be the more famous, but Fulvia, Mark Antony's wife, fought a war on his behalf. Many other women remain nameless but integral. Through new examination of the sources combined with vivid storytelling Daisy Dunn shows us the ancient world through fresh eyes, and introduces us to an incredible cast of ancient women, weavers of an entire world"--Amazon

Abstract: "The Costume Institute’s spring 2024 exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, will reactivate the sensory capacities of masterworks in the Museum’s collection through first-hand research, conservation analysis, and diverse technologies—from cutting-edge tools, artificial intelligence, and computer-generated imagery to traditional formats of x-rays, video animation, light projection, and soundscapes. Approximately 250 garments and accessories spanning four centuries will be on view, visually united by iconography related to nature, which will serve as a metaphor for the fragility and ephemerality of fashion and a vehicle to examine the cyclical themes of rebirth and renewal. The exhibition will breathe new life into these storied objects through creative and immersive activations designed to convey the smells, sounds, textures, and motions of garments that can no longer directly interact with the body." -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website

Abstract: "Elements is an eclectic, evocative and resoundingly beautiful treasury of imagery exploring depictions of the elemental forces that reveal their profound significance to ancient philosophers, alchemists and astrologers, and modern artists, photographers and scientists alike. Expertly curated, themed and paired by image alchemist Stephen Ellcock, modern and visionary images are juxtaposed with the ancient and arcane; the creative power of the elements is contrasted with the disastrous; and the connections of the elements with the seasons, the humours, the signs of the zodiac and parts of the body are revealed. Following physician and occultist Robert Fludd's (1574-1637) presentation of the order of the elements, Ellcock guides readers through a remarkable selection of images, ascending from earth, through water, air and fire before culminating in the most spiritual of the elements, celestial aether. He makes parallels with the five elements of eastern philosophies and their relationship to the chakras, acupuncture and Chinese astrology. Introductory text explores how the elements have defined the components of Earth and the heavens and their relationship to humanity since they were first proposed by the Persian prophet Zoroaster, more than 2,000 years ago. Insightful panel texts punctuate the pages, illuminating key concepts. Pertinent literary, philosophical and spiritual quotations intersperse the amazing images, presenting further commentary on the overarching themes. At a time when humanity's relationship with the Earth teeters on the edge of catastrophe, this compendium of images exploring the natural elements promises the possibility of earthly and spiritual harmony emerging from the chaos"--Publisher's description

Abstract: "It's safe to say everyone thinks about death--whether they want to or not. But have you ever wondered about what sort of keepsakes you can make with your remains, or given any thought to the most scandalous deathbed confessions throughout history? Well Madison Reyes and Spencer Henry have, and they've spent countless hours scouring the darkest corners of the internet, digging through newspaper archives, devouring documents, and picking the brains of death industry experts to bring you Obitchuary, a darkly funny and deeply poignant exploration of all things death. With chapters like 'Coffin Confessions,' 'Executions to Die For,' 'The Last Word,' and 'If These Dolls Could Speak,' Madison and Spencer guide us through surprisingly colorful history, traditions, and contemporary practices. They also demystify taboo topics with incredible and hilarious details, including FUNerals, as they call them, cremations and themed funerals, famous body snatchers, and so much more. Shocking, macabre, hilarious, and moving, Obitchuary digs deep into the physical aspects of death while also carefully exploring what death says about our humanity and the ways we choose to remember those we've lost. So go ahead, crack open the book--we know you're dying to read it." --

Abstract: "Published to accompany a major site-specific installation in Venice, Yu Hong: Another One Bites the Dust offers an in-depth examination of the work of one of China's foremost living artists, renowned internationally for her virtuosic large-scale figurative paintings. Yu Hong's (born 1966) practice centers on humane depictions of contemporary life that are both deeply personal and astute in their observations of larger societal realities. Featuring beautiful installation photography of Venice's Chiesetta della Misericordia, this book presents a new cycle of works painted on gold ground that depict the arc of human experience while referencing aspects of Buddhist narrative painting, Byzantine icons and the Italian Baroque. Through her lushly painted stories, she considers the radical changes pressed on humanity by the speed and totality of globalization, the existential climate emergency, diaspora and dispossession in many parts of the world, and the uneven histories of postcolonialism. Yu Hong's subject is the precarity of meaning in the face of calamitous disruption."--
Abstract: "Yu Hong: Another One Bites the Dust will feature new figurative and narrative paintings that respond to the architectural and cultural context of the Chiesetta della Misericordia, a deconsecrated Romanesque-Byzantine church founded by Augustinian friars in the tenth century. Conditioned by this architectural site, the exhibition will present Yu Hong's work outside the bounds of art-historical conventions, examining the artist's worlding of supernatural realism as a radically anachronistic stance that further destabilizes our notions of contemporary life.In Another One Bites the Dust, Yu Hong borrows images of people, mostly women and children, in writhing poses expressing mental anguish or imminent physical danger, both real and fantastical, from the internet and social media. Set against a gold ground and shaped as large tondos or arched panels, the figures presented confront and upend the epic themes of sacred art while not shying away from the role of painting to portray the sorrows of the human condition. The works in the exhibition upend the epic themes of sacred art while embracing painting's capacity to portray the human condition--the sorrows, absurdities, and transcendence of bodily existence. The large tondo paintings Birth (2022) and Death (2022) are set against a gold ground: a newborn held by a doctor's prophylactic gloves and connected to its mother by an umbilical cord will be paired across the nave with the bare feet of several cadavers. The exhibition's centerpiece will be a ten-part painting, Walking through Life (2019-22), suspended as a semicircle in the choir. Progressing from left to right, each arched panel depicts a scene of different physical stages of life as conditioned and contorted by social norms, gender roles, and political realities."--
Note: "The Asian Art Initiative of the Guggenheim Museum, New York, announces the first major exhibition in Europe of contemporary artist Yu Hong. Yu Hong: Another One Bites the Dust will take place in the Chiesetta della Misericordia, Canareggio, Venice, concurrently with the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, April 20–November 24, 2024. The presentation is curated by Dr. Alexandra Munroe, Senior Curator at Large, Global Arts, Solomon R. Abstract: Shining Lights is the first critical anthology of Black women photographers active in the UK during the 1980s and 1990s, providing a richly illustrated overview of a significant and overlooked chapter of British photographic history. Seen through the lens of Britain's sociopolitical and cultural contexts, the publication tells a unique story from the dual perspectives of lived experience and historical investigation. Edited and researched by Joy Gregory, one of the period's most influential photographic artists, alongside art historian Taous Dahmani, who contributes a keynote essay. The pioneering and diverse work created by Black women practitioners in the UK over the course of these two decades marked an important juncture in both documentary and conceptual practices, including the experimental use of photomontage, self-portraiture, staged imagery, and photography in dialogue with other media. Shining Lights showcases the expertise and evolution of this work, illuminated by ephemera and archival material, new essays and roundtable conversations, foregrounding a variety of individual artistic developments as well as the communities fostered around them. 0Amongst the fifty-seven photographers included are Maxine Walker, Ingrid Pollard, Claudette Holmes, Roshini Kempadoo, Mohini Chandra, Carole Wright, Joy Gregory, Sutapa Biswas, Maud Sulter, Brenda Agard, Anita McKenzie, Mitra Tabrizian, Poulomi Desai, Virginia Nimarkoh, Jennie Baptiste, Nudrat Afza, Merle Van den Bosch, and Eileen Perrier.0Co-published with Autograph, London

Abstract: "This photographic celebration of queer love and excellence gathers fourteen LGBTQ+ power couples, offering a glimpse into the journeys that led to their meaningful relationships and thriving careers. From designer Debbie Millman's ardent courtship of writer Roxane Gay (which resulted in their marriage in 2020) to the romantic and creative relationship forged between Perfume Genius bandmates Mike Hadreas and Alan Wyffels on stage during their first world tour, this beautiful book offers a closer look into the lives of fourteen inspiring LGBTQ+ couples and the meet-cutes, success stories, and personal reflections that made them the role models they are today. These icons come from a range of backgrounds-they are trailblazers who lead research labs, restaurants, and news organizations; create life-giving art and music; and tell queer stories in award-winning books, films, and television shows. With in-depth original interviews facilitated by journalist Hannah Murphy and intimate photography by her wife, Billie Winter, this diverse collection is a jubilant celebration of queer love and an empowering reminder to younger LGBTQ+ generations of their limitless possibilities"--

Abstract: "FUTURE/PRESENT brings together a vast collection of writers, artists, activists, and academics working at the forefront of today's most pressing struggles for cultural equity and racial justice in a demographically changing America. The volume builds upon five years of national organizing by Arts in a Changing America, an artist-led initiative that challenges structural racism by centering people of color who are leading innovation at the nexus of arts production, community benefit, and social change. FUTURE/PRESENT includes a range of essays and criticism, visual and performance art, artist manifestos, interviews, poetry, and reflections on community practice. Throughout, contributors examine issues of placekeeping and belonging, migration and diasporas, the carceral state, renegotiating relationships with land, ancestral knowledge as radical futurity, and shifting paradigms of inequity. Foregrounding the powerful resilience of communities of color, FUTURE/PRESENT advances the role of artists as first responders to injustices, creative stewards in the cohesion and health of communities, and innovative strategists for equity. Selected contributors. adrienne maree brown, Dahlak Brathwaite, Jeff Chang, Tameca Cole, Ofelia Esparza, Antoine Hunter, Nobuko Miyamoto, Wendy Red Star, Spel, Jose Antonio Vargas, Carrie Mae Weems, Hinaleimoana Kwai Kong Wong-Kalu"--

Abstract: "Peirce's career as a logician spanned almost half a century, during which time he produced several increasingly complex sign systems. The best-known, from 1903, defined amongst other things a signifying process involving sign, object and interpretant, the universally-known icon-index-symbol division and a set of 10 distinct classes of signs. Peirce subsequently expanded this process to include 2 objects, the sign and 3 interpretants. Uncoincidentally, in the 5 years between 1903 and the final system of 1908, he introduced a number of highly innovative semiotic concepts which he never developed. One such concept is hypoiconicity, which comprises 3 levels of isomorphism holding between sign and object and, in spite of the mutations these varieties of icon subsequently underwent, offers qualitative analysis as a complement to the traditional literal-figurative binarism in the discussion of verbal and nonverbal signs. Another is semiosis, which Peirce introduced and defined in 1907 but only rarely illustrated. Involving a complex combination of object, perception, interpretation and a medium, this is shown to be a far more complex signifying process than the one implicit in the three-correlate definition of the sign of 1903. Exploring the evolving theoretical background to the emergence of these new concepts and showing how they differ from certain contemporary conceptions of sign, mind and signification, the book proposes an introduction to, and explanations and illustrations of, these important developments." --

Abstract: "From the cosmologies of ancient Black civilizations to the era of slavery and the present day, African Americans have reimagined the futures and possibilities of Black people across the globe through Afrofuturism. Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures investigates the past, present, and future of this evolving platform of Black identity and explores its expression through literature, music, art, film, fashion, and activism. Essays from key scholars, authors, and practitioners reveal Afrofuturism's historic and poignant engagement with African American intellectual history and popular culture. Some 125 iconic Smithsonian objects, historic photographs, exciting comics, and stunning artworks accompany the text. Through these pieces, the book illustrates Afrofuturism as a movement that always looks forward even as it looks back and explores its transformative power to not simply imagine a better, more equitable world, but to actively work toward one." --

Abstract: "Tracing the local and global impact of Black Diasporic designers, Africa's Fashion Diaspora is one of the first books to explore the diverse perspectives and significant roles that Black designers have contributed to the creation of international fashion culture. With a focus on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, this book features some of the best examples of innovative fashion throughout the period and contextualizes how diasporic designers' work can speak to contemporary issues, including decolonization, sustainability, and social equity. Diasporic designers cannot be monolithically defined--they come from varied cultures and their work speaks to their personal experiences, as well as wide ranges of influence. Featuring cutting-edge designers such as Oliver Rousteing, Tremaine Emory, Virgil Abloh and their work in the major fashion houses of Balmain, Denim Tears and Off-White, as well as Pathé'O, Stephen Burrows, Patrick Kelly and the iconic designs from the 1970s and 1980s. Hylan Booker's creative output during his time as Head of the House of Worth during the 1960s London relaunch is also explored. Africa's Fashion Diaspora introduces readers to important, yet unexamined fashion histories that form our current fashion ecosystem and support the impactful designers who are shaping contemporary culture" --
