    Kurzfassung: Das 20. Jahrhundert ist oft als das Jahrhundert der Gewalt bezeichnet worden. Daher mangelt es nicht an Gewaltphänomenen, die es genauer zu untersuchen gilt, als dies bislang geschehen ist. In diesem Band werden deswegen Gewalttaten aus neuen Perspektiven untersucht, neue Interpretationen ihrer Entstehung vorgestellt und neue Herausforderungen der sozialwissenschaftlichen Gewaltforschung debattiert. Folgende Fragen werden unter anderem in diesem gesellschaftspolitisch folgenreichen Buch behandelt: Kann der lange dominierende Begriff der physischen Gewalt überhaupt noch leitend sein, und muß die Gewaltanalyse sich nicht wieder stärker der strukturellen Gewalt zuwenden, da zunehmend eine »Gewalt ohne Gesicht« auftritt? Stecken die Ursachen im Gewalthandeln selbst, so daß Hinweise auf soziale Hintergründe etwa in die Irre führen? Verlieren sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungen aufgrund neuer biologischer Ansätze völlig an Relevanz? Biographische Informationen Wilhelm Heitmeyer, geboren 1945, war von 1996 bis 2013 Direktor des Instituts für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung der Universität Bielefeld und arbeitet dort jetzt als Forschungsprofessor. In der edition suhrkamp gab er u. a. die Reihe Deutsche Zustände heraus. Wilhelm Heitmeyer, geboren 1945, war von 1996 bis 2013 Direktor des Instituts für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung der Universität Bielefeld und arbeitet dort jetzt als Forschungsprofessor.     Kurzfassung: This book provides a detailed introduction to how the Länder (the sixteen states of Germany) function not only within the country itself but also within the wider context of European political affairs. Some knowledge of the role of the Länder is essential to an understanding of the political system as well as of German federalism. This book traces the origin of the Länder. It looks at their place in the constitutional order of the country and the political and administrative system. Their organization and administration are fully covered, as is their financing. Parties and elections in the Länder and the controversial roles of parliaments and deputies are also examined. Because of their role in the Bundesrat, the second legislative chamber, the Länder are clearly an important part of the national legislative process. They participate in policy-making with regard to the European Union, and have limited influence on Germany's foreign affairs outside of Europe.     Kurzfassung: Sexuality, motherhood and marriage were matters of public policy throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They were prominent areas in the regulation of women, but the idea that the law merely reflected what was normal and natural obscured the extent of this regulation. Regulating Womanhood poses historically and culturally specific questions about the mechanisms that have controlled and restricted women. It shows not merely how laws and policies have set boundaries to the lives of women but also how the category of 'woman' has been constructed as a specific object for legal and social policy, and how women came to be seen as needing 'special' regulation. In addition, Regulating Womanhood explores how children and the organisation of reproduction and sexuality operated to normalise and make acceptable the degree of regulation to which women were subjected. Yet this is not a catalogue of the unmitigated subjection of women in history. The contributors focus on women's resistance and activity, and on the shift in modes of regulation, to challenge the idea of an unchanging history of the legal oppression of women

    Kurzfassung: Main description: Between 1750 and 1850, the methods and function of imprisonment went through a transformation. Prisons became the centre of public disciplination. Their function was to transform delinquents into useful citizens. But how should the buildings be designed to achieve that aim? Which new technologies could be used? The birth of modern prisons was long-lasting, covering three generations. The author outlines this process and shows parallels to the developments in England and the United States.
    Kurzfassung: Main description: Der fundamentale Transformationsprozess des Strafsystems zwischen 1750 und 1850 machte die Strafanstalt zum Zentrum des staatlichen Strafvollzugs. Mit ihrer Hilfe hofften die Zeitgenossen, den Delinquenten in einen nützlichen Staatsbürger umschaffen zu können. Doch welches Design mußte diese Institution haben? Mit welchen Techniken war die Besserung des Delinquenten zu erreichen? Und wie sollte diese neue Straftechnologie in das bestehende Anstaltssystem implementiert werden? Die Geburt des Gefängnisses war ein langwieriger Erfindungsprozeß, der sich über drei Generationen hinzog. Thomas Nutz zeichnet nach, wie sich im ausgehenden 18. Jahrhundert ein spezifischer Diskurs über die Reform der Haftanstalten formierte und ein internationales Fachwissen herausbildete. Eine Entwicklung, die schließlich Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Entstehung einer eigenständigen Disziplin der "Gefängniskunde" mündete. Am Beispiel Preußens demonstriert der Autor, wie eng die staatlichen Bürokratien bei der Durchführung der Reformen des Vollzugswesens mit den gefängniskundlichen Experten zusammenarbeiteten.

    Kurzfassung: Netwar-like cyberwar-describes a new spectrum of conflict that is emerging in the wake of the information revolution. Netwar includes conflicts waged, on the one hand, by terrorists, criminals, gangs, and ethnic extremists; and by civil-society activists (such as cyber activists or WTO protestors) on the other. What distinguishes netwar is the networked organizational structure of its practitioners-with many groups actually being leaderless-and their quickness in coming together in swarming attacks. To confront this new type of conflict, it is crucial for governments, military, and law enforcement to begin networking themselves.
