    Kurzfassung: "En France, dans ce pays riche où l'agriculture se veut productiviste et exportatrice, une personne sur dix doit recourir à des dispositifs d'aide alimentaire. Les Restos du cœur en sont l'un des acteurs principaux. Que leur existence soit devenue indispensable révèle l'absurdité et la triple faillite de notre système agricole, malade d'un bout à l'autre de la chaîne. Mondialisé et industriel, celui-ci participe au désastre écologique en cours tandis que nombre d'agriculteurs français sombrent dans la pauvreté malgré un lourd labeur. A travers l'incroyable travail réalisé par l'association fondée par Coluche, il y a bientôt quarante ans, on pourrait croire que les dons de nourriture et de temps répondent au droit à l'alimentation. Pourtant, il n'en est rien. Sur le terrain, les bénévoles sont en souffrance. Ils constatent que leur action, loin d'aider à sortir de la pauvreté, consiste surtout à maintenir une paix sociale, en évitant des vols et des émeutes de la faim. Car l'impossibilité à accéder à la nourriture est une violence qui s'exerce contre les plus pauvres. On sort profondément ébranlé de cette enquête dans le monde invisible du quotidien de l'aide alimentaire.     Kurzfassung: Why do certain parts of the state in Africa work so effectively despite operating in difficult governance contexts? How do 'pockets of bureaucratic effectiveness' emerge and become sustained over time? And what does this tell us about the prospects for state-building and development in Africa? Repeated economic and social crises have demanded that development thinkers and policy actors have had to engage with the critical role that states play in delivering development. Pockets of Effectiveness and the Politics of State-building and Development in Africa shows that politics is the driving factor that shapes how well state agencies perform their roles. It deploys a new conceptual framework – the power domains approach – to explore the shifting fortunes of key state agencies in five countries – Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia – over the past three decades. Our original research reveals when, how and why political rulers decide to build effective state agencies and enable them to deliver certain forms of economic development – often through forming strategic coalitions with senior bureaucrats and with international support – and also when this support falters and gives way to a politics of survival. Comparative analysis identifies two potential trajectories towards state-building in Africa, each shaped by different configurations of social and political power. The book critiques the role that international development agencies have played in (mis)shaping the state in Africa and suggests a new strategic agenda for building the state capacities required to deliver sustained development at the current juncture. The book closes with critical commentaries from two leading scholars in the field, to help place our work in context and establish the next steps for research and strategy in this increasingly important area of development theory and practice

    Kurzfassung: Dieses Open-Access-Buch zeigt, dass feindliche Einstellungen gegenüber Muslim*innen oder als Muslim*innen markierten Menschen und gegenüber der Religion des Islams oftmals nur wenig differenziert betrachtet werden. Die mangelnde Trennschärfe zwischen Einstellungen gegenüber Menschen auf der einen und einer Religion auf der anderen Seite manifestiert sich etwa in Definitionen, in denen Islam und Muslim*innen in scheinbar untrennbarer Art und Weise zueinander konstruiert werden oder im Operationalisierungsprozess, wenn auf manifester Ebene Einstellungen gegenüber Muslim*innen erhoben werden, das Konstrukt jedoch als Islamfeindlichkeit bezeichnet wird. Diese Studie untersucht, (1) ob eine synonyme Verwendung der Begriffe gerechtfertigt ist oder ob sich empirisch nachweisen lässt, dass Islam- und Muslim*innenfeindlichkeit nicht identisch sind, (2) inwiefern Unterschiede im Ausmaß feindlicher Einstellungen gegenüber dem Islam und gegenüber Muslim*innen bestehen und (3) wie sich Deutungsrahmen der Befragten mit den Begriffen 'Islam' und 'Muslim*innen' voneinander unterscheiden. Die Zerlegung in seine Einzelteile ermöglicht es, das Phänomen in all seinen Dimensionen zu verstehen und wichtige theoretisch-konzeptionelle, methodologische und handlungspraktische Konsequenzen abzuleiten

It was led in politics and the media just as in academia. The economic usefulness of the Euro has been discussed, and the political implications of a fostered European unification. Most often, the state of Europeanization has been presented as being without alternatives: no Europe without Greece; no Euro without Greece; no way back to the nation state in its old form. As a result, the debate on Europe was largely narrowed down to the very questions of the immediate crisis, namely economics and fi nance. Only a few voices held that the crisis in fact was one of politics, not of economics. And only late did politicians mention again that Europe is more than the EU. Alternative views of Europe, however, were scarce and often presented full of consequences. It thus came without much surprise that the lacking imaginative power of politicians as well as intellectuals was criticized. The idea for this volume sprang from that situation. The editors invited scholars from various disciplines to present them with ways of imagining Europe that go beyond the rather limited view of EU institutions. How was, how is Europe imagined? Which memories are evoked, which visions explicated? Which counter-narratives to prominent discourses are there?

De la formation de communautés marronnes au début de la colonisation, aux mobilisations féminines en contexte autoritaire, en passant par les cultures urbaines, les cultures syndicales des femmes et des travailleurs dans les mines, les contestations pro ou contre la liberté des homosexuels, tous font prévaloir leur pouvoir de contestation de manière plurielle. La voie religieuse est un domaine où s'exerce parfois de manière violente, les protestations de populations souvent jeunes, en attente de mobilité sociale. Les guerres électorales et la constitution de milices dessinent une géographie de la violence en milieu urbain, violence qui trouve à se déplacer en milieu rural dans certaines dérives sectaires comme en témoigne l'étude sur Boko Haram
    Kurzfassung: This book uses empirical research to bring together a broad range of protest contexts in twelve chapters. From the formation of Maroon societies in the early colonial period, to female mobilisation in authoritarian contexts, via urban youth culture, women or mineworkers in trade unionism, as well as pro- and anti- gay rights activists, the protagonists here all insist upon their rights to protest in a variety of ways. Sometimes popular protest is expressed through religion, often (and sometimes violently) by young people, exasperated by their long wait for social achievement. Electoral wars and the formation of militias reveal a geography of violence in urban areas, which, in some sectarian excesses, can be displaced to rural areas, as described in the study on Boko Haram

Is citizenship in decline due to globalisation and an erosion of civic participation and democratic representation? Or is it merely transformed and extended to new levels and larger scales? Should we assess these challenges and changes primarily from a perspective of global justice, or consider also membership in a democratic polity as itself a basic good? Prospects for Citizenship addresses these broad questions in a unique collaborative effort. The result is an impressive book that looks at the future of citizenship from multiple research perspectives while remaining coherent in its overall purpose.     Kurzfassung: This book develops a notion of philosophy as perceptual learning, by re-interpreting "Merleau-Pontys Phenomenology of Perception". The empirical subject and her natural attitude are summoned to retrieve the pre-objective layer which founds the objective world, and the living body which founds the constituted, alienated body. But empirical life seems to resist this call, so that phenomenology, unwilling to explicitly criticize the natural attitude, nonetheless disavows it by turning to limit cases of this attitude, cases of pathological disorder. Dorfman argues that understanding pathology would allow us to understand the resistance of normal life to the phenomenological call.The second part of the book introduces the psychoanalytical theory of Jacques Lacan in order to show that there is no pre-objective life without objectivity, just as there is no normal life without pathology. The complex relationship between the objective and the pre-objective, the normal and the pathological is examined in order to show that only the constant movement between these different poles constitutes true perceptual phenomenology as well as free existence.

    Kurzfassung: Citizenship is frequently invoked both as an instrument and goal of immigrant integration. Yet, in migration contexts, citizenship also marks a distinction between members and outsiders based on their different relations to particular states. A migration perspective highlights the boundaries of citizenship and political control over entry and exit as well as the fact that foreign residents remain in most countries deprived of core rights of political participation. This book summarizes current theories and empirical research on the legal status and political participation of migrants in European democracies.

    Kurzfassung: Considering the abundant promises and euphoric expectations (as well as apocalyptic visions of technology) that still dominate discourses on media and technology my analysis focuses on their cultural and social condition, the specific moment of their emergence, their continuous persistence, their socio-symbolic function, and their implications for social contexts of thought and perception and for hegemonic relations. The techno-deterministic notion of a ‚paradigm change', the proclamation of a ‚radically new' definition of the subject and the idea of a technically conditioned abolition of traditional dichotomies is in fact contrasted by a striking adherence to conventional and dichotome models of thought and of representation, and to the idea of an autonomous and technologically perfectionable subject. My analysis will on the one hand focus on the function of exaggerated visions of technological development (predicating a dissolution of space, time, matter and identity) and the function of ideas of ‚alternative', ‚virtual' ‚spaces' for establishing specific notions of ‚society' - indicating a specific relation of phantasm and symptom as I will show. On the other hand I will develop the definition of a political subject - not conceived as a sovereign actor, nor as an arbitrary variety, but rather as constituted on the basis of a structural impossibility inherent in language and which alone can be, due to this very impossibility or antagonism a subject of the political. In the course of this argument the notion of sexual difference will be critically revised. Furthermore I will develop a definition of agency adequate to provide the grounds and the argumentative tools for the contestability of cultural and social constructs.     Kurzfassung: Ausgangspunkt meiner Analyse sind die mit der Idee eines Cyberspace nach wie vor verknüpften utopisch wie auch dystopisch überfrachteten Projektionen hinsichtlich ihrer kulturellen und ideologischen Beschaffenheit, des Zeitpunktes ihres Auftretens, ihrer anhaltenden Persistenz, ihrer sozio-symbolischen Funktion sowie ihrer Implikationen für gesellschaftliche Denk- und Wahrnehmungszusammenhänge. Technikdeterministische Vorstellungen eines ‚Paradigmenwechsels', die Proklamierung einer technologisch bedingten ‚Neudefinition' des Subjekts, die Idee einer Auflösung klassischer Dichotomien und einer Grenzüberschreitung von Raum, Zeit, Materie und Identität stehen in deutlichem Widerspruch zur tatsächlich beobachtbaren Reproduktion nicht nur konventioneller und dichotomer Denkmodelle und Repräsentationsformen, sondern der Idee eines autonomen und technologisch perfektionierbaren Subjekts, die angesichts ihrer zentralen Rolle in aktuellen Mediendiskursen und der Vehemenz, mit der sie zu diesem spezifiaschen historischen Zeitpunkt vertreten wird, einer Erklärung bedarf. Meine Analyse fokussiert auf die Funktion derartiger Technologievisionen bzw. der Idee ‚alternativer' virtueller ‚Räume' für die Etablierung bestimmter Konzeptionen von ‚Gesellschaft' und verweist auf eine für diesen Kontext spezifische Relation von Phantasma und Symptom. Auf der Basis einer Revision des Begriffs sexueller Differenz entwickle ich die Definition eines politischen Subjekts, das nicht einfach als souveräner Akteur oder beliebige Vielfalt zu verstehen ist, sondern sich über einen strukturellen Antagonismus konstituiert, sowie einen Begriff von Handlungsfähigkeit, der die Basis für eine Anfechtbarkeit sozio-kultureller Konstruktionen begründen kann.
