Kurzfassung: "Korean Skilled Workers is the first book to systematically examine the sociopolitical trajectory of South Korea's skilled workers in heavy and chemical industries (HCI). Following the commencement of the Park Chung Hee regime's HCI project in 1972, the Great Workers' Struggle of 1987, and subsequent union militancy, a "labor aristocracy" evolved. In contrast to the uncertain situation of millions of nonregular workers in South Korea today, regular workers achieved guaranteed job security, superior wages, and other benefits. Research on Korean workers has focused on their struggle against political oppression, economic exploitation, and cultural prejudice. In contrast, this study demonstrates that the most enduring struggle of Korea's industrial workers was for wage increases and stable employment, not for a wider revolutionary socialist movement. Korean Skilled Workers draws on archival records and in-depth interviews of HCI workers of three main heavy manufacturing firms (including Hyundai Heavy Industry) to portray these individuals and their vastly changed collective trajectory, showing how their paths embody the consequences of Korea's rapid development, such as the shift from state-led to chaebŏl-led capital accumulation and the limits of a broad-based labor solidarity in the context of a counter-offensive against the strength of the radical unionism of the 1980s."

Kurzfassung: "Beyond the Modern Beauty is a holistic study of Takehisa Yumeji's (1884-1934) artistry that attempts to unify and understand the multiple discursive and social frameworks within which his images were animated with meaning. The book situates Yumeji's graphic art within the emerging mediascape of the 1900s and 1910s, when novel forms of reprographic media were enabling the creation of new spaces of visual culture and image circulation. Yumeji's graphic works developed in tandem with this quickly evolving sphere and ranged from illustrations in socialist bulletins with images of anti-war and leftist sentiment to fashionable images of beautiful women referred to as "Yumeji-style beauties" in books and magazines targeting a female audience. As such, Yumeji's works circulated widely and reveal his role in the cultivation of a new demographic of young female consumers, along with the reinvention of the woodblock medium from its centuries-long tradition of "floating-world pictures" (ukiyo-e) into a technically diverse vehicle of visual culture and avant-garde pictorialism. The book addresses Yumeji's art from the start of his career in 1905 to the 1920s, when his production of graphic works was the most prolific. The appendix introduces for the first time in English translation a substantial body of Yumeji's texts, including diary entries, poetry, essays, books, collection of works, and commentary alongside his illustrations. Commentaries and critiques by his contemporaries are also included and are translated for the first time"--

Kurzfassung: "The Yongle emperor (r. 1402-24), one of the most famous rulers in Chinese history, is perhaps best known as the builder of Beijing's magnificent Forbidden City and for reconstruction of the Grand Canal. This volume is both the first book-length study in a Western language of Ming dynasty (1368-1644) architecture and the first in any language devoted to the architectural projects of a single Chinese emperor. Focusing on Yongle's imperial palaces in Beijing, a Daoist architectural complex on Mount Wudang, and a Buddhist temple at the Sino-Tibetan frontier, it analyzes his empire-wide construction projects and demonstrates how the siting, design, and use of his palaces and temples established his authority and contributed to the legitimization of his usurpation of power. These architectural projects help us understand his sense of empire by the far-flung locations in which he built, the distant regions from which he extracted the construction materials, and the use of tens of thousands of craftsmen and other laborers. Through his constructions, Yongle connected himself to the divine, interacted with his subjects, established an imperial presence in regions far outside the capital, and shaped his imperial legacy-thus extending imperial influence across space and time. Spanning issues of architectural design and also of construction technologies, this analysis reveals the remarkable advancements in timber-frame construction as well as using an art-historical approach to examine patronage, audience, and reception, and to situate the buildings within their larger social, historical, and religious contexts"--

Kurzfassung: "Crow's Shadow Institute of the Arts at 25 explores the first twenty-five years of a remarkable nonprofit printmaking and traditional arts studio based on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in eastern Oregon, the only such center located on a reservation community in the United States. Art historian Prudence Roberts, drawing from conversations with CSIA founder, the artist James Lavadour, narrates the institute's history from its beginnings through the establishment of a professional quality printmaking program and an international reputation. Native American art scholar heather ahtone and curator Rebecca Dobkins trace the development of indigenous printmaking in North America, further contextualizing this story. Over sixty color plates illustrate selected work from the dozens of artists, indigenous and non-indigenous, who have completed residencies at CSIA since its founding, including luminaries of contemporary Native American art Rick Bartow, Joe Feddersen, Jeffrey Gibson, Edgar Heap of Birds, James Lavadour, Lillian Pitt, Wendy Red Star, and Marie Watt." --Publisher description

Kurzfassung: When Haida sculptor and Canadian icon Bill Reid died, in the spring of 1998, he was more widely and more fervently admired than any other Native artist in North America. Although Reid attained his greatest fame in the visual arts, words were his first professional medium. Until he received his first large carving commission, in 1958, he made his living as a radio announcer and script writer. This work earned him the Haida name Kihlguulins, the "One with the Beautiful Voice". In his later years, Parkinson’s disease curtailed his public speaking, but it did not prevent him writing. His oratorical and literary gifts are rightly part of the Reid legend. Recordings of his voice can still be played in a number of major museums around the world. Despite his gift for words, much of what he wrote was published only in newspapers, magazines and exhibition catalogues. Some was made public in audio form but never printed, and some has languished in manuscript for years. The 'Essential Writings of Bill Reid' collects, for the first time, the most important of these widely scattered writings: seminal statements on the art on the Northwest Coast, the role of the Native artist in a multicultural world, and the quintessential role of the environment to the survival of human culture.
