    Abstract: The Venezuelan youth orchestra program known as "El Sistema" has attracted much attention internationally, partly via its flagship orchestra, The Simonn Bolivar Youth Orchestra, headed by Gustavo Dudamel, and partly through its claims to use classical music education to rescue vulnerable children. Having been met overwhelmingly with praise, The System has become an inspiration for music educators around the globe. Yet, despite its fame, influence, and size - it is projected to number a million students in Venezuela and has spread to dozens of countries - it has been the subject of surprisingly little scrutiny and genuine debate. In this first full-length critical study of the program, Geoffrey Baker explores the career of its founder, Jose Antonio Abreu, and the ideology and organizational dynamics of his institution. Drawing on a year of fieldwork in Venezuela and interviews with Venezuelan musicians and cultural figures, Baker examines El Sistema's program of "social action through music," reassessing widespread beliefs about the system as a force for positive social change.
    Abstract: Abreu, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, emerges as a complex and controversial figure, whose project is shaped by his religious education, economics training, and political apprenticeship. Claims for the symphony orchestra as a progressive pedagogical tool and motor of social justice are questioned, and assertions that the program prioritizes social over musical goals and promotes civic values such as democracy, meritocracy, and teamwork are also challenged. Placing El Sistema in historical and comparative perspective, Baker reveals that it is far from the revolutionary social program of contemporary imagination, representing less the future of classical music than a step backwards into its past. A controversial and eye-opening account sure to stir debate, El Sistema is an essential read for anyone curious about this phenomenon in the worlds of classical music, education, and social development. - Geoffrey Baker is a Reader in the Music Department at Royal Holloway, University of London. His books include Imposing Harmony: Music and Society in Colonial Cuzco (2008), which won the American Musicological Society's Robert Stevenson Award, and Buena Vista in the Club: Rap, Reggaeton, and Revolution in Havana (2011). He has also created a series of ethnographic films about childhood music learning in Cuba and Venezuela.

    Abstract: Biographical note: Cäcilie Blume ist Vikarin der Evangelischen Landeskirche Württemberg. - Long description: Bei der Gestaltung von kirchlichen Trauerfeiern wird immer öfter auf populäre Musik zurückgegriffen. Die Wünsche von Angehörigen entsprechen dabei nicht immer den Vorstellungen der SeelsorgerInnen. Blume untersucht Art, Häufigkeit und Begründung entsprechender Wünsche und legt die Bewertung und den Umgang durch die Pfarrerinnen und Pfarrer dar. Daneben beschreibt sie aus der Perspektive der Angehörigen die Hintergründe und das Erleben dieser Lieder. Darauf aufbauend werden deren Funktionen im Bestattungsritual wie etwa deren Beitrag zur Trauerbewältigung bestimmt. Abschließend bringt Blume beide Perspektiven miteinander ins Gespräch, um daraus Konsequenzen für die pastorale Praxis zu ziehen.

    Abstract: Rap, techno, électro, house, jungle, trip hop... ces styles musicaux se sont installés dans le paysage discographique français depuis la fin des années 1990. À travers les succès commerciaux retentissants ou les coups d'éclat de leurs animateurs, ils sont apparus comme des fenêtres ouvertes sur les plaisirs, les désirs et les maux de la jeunesse. « Jeunes », les musiques rap et électroniques le sont en effet à double titre : filles d'esthétiques postmodernes et de bricolages technologiques dernier cri, elles sont aussi sociologiquement attachées à l'adolescence et à l'entrée dans la vie adulte. En montrant ces « nouveaux »musiciens au travail, l'auteur entraîne le lecteur loin des clichés réducteurs associant ces cultures musicales à une « perte de repères » ou à une mauvaise humeur à la mode. L'articulation entre création artistique et critique sociale, l'invention et la diffusion de modèles d'organisation alternatifs en matière de production discographique sont mises au jour. Dans cet univers professionnel très actuel, la banalisation des « home-studios » et l'extension des responsabilités de l'artiste permettent en effet aux individus de faire carrière en multipliant les projets (de disques et de labels) et les casquettes (de musicien et de manager). Peinture vivante des relations de travail et au travail dans un milieu artistique fondé sur la mobilité, cet ouvrage permet enfin de comprendre les évolutions récentes du monde du disque vers une réactivité et une souplesse toujours plus grandes.

    Abstract: In einer 1908 erschienenen "Kampfschrift gegen die Geräusche unseres Lebens" ereiferte sich der Kulturphilosoph Theodor Lessing über das "Getobe unermesslich anschwellender Riesenstädte, in denen "einer auf des anderen Nervenklaviatur" spiele. Als große Lärmbelästigung empfand er vor allem die Musik: So mokierte Lessing sich über die "grauenhafte Unsitte" der Biermusiken und Promenadenkonzerte oder die "Tyrannei" des Klavierspiels bei geöffnetem Fenster. Derlei Beschwerden sind indes nur die Gegenseite einer sich seit dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert umfassend ausbreitenden urbanen populären Musikkultur, die dieser Band aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven in den Blick nimmt.

    Abstract: With the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, a third of the world's population came to live under communist regimes. Over the next forty years, the lives of most people in the non-communist world were also shaped in some way by communism and the Cold War waged against it. In the cases of many artists, intellectuals and workers, this involvement was wished and active. Yet, while the left-leaning tendencies of western artists have long been recognised, the extent and depth of musicians' involvement in communism specifically has been largely ignored, suppressed, or dismissed as youthful infatuation. The present volume offers, for the first time, a representative overview of the relationship of music and communism outside the communist bloc. Ranging across multiple musical genres, five continents, and seven decades, the nineteen chapters address both prominent musicians who aligned themselves with communism, and the investments in music of a range of communist and radical Marxist organisations (including national Communist Parties, the Black Panther Party, and Maoist and Trotskyist groups in Britain, Germany and Nepal). In the book's first section, five musicians (Giacomo Manzoni, Ernie Lieberman, Konrad Boehmer, Chris Cutler and Georgina Born) offer their own, more personal perspectives upon their engagement with communism. The volume as a whole highlights two 'red strains' in particular: the irreducible differences of opinion between communists regarding key debates concerning music's role in society; and the multiple challenges faced by every engaged musician in reconciling political and artistic agendas.     Abstract: While probing the politics of everyday in Gikuyu popular music, the main thrust of this book is to unpack the representation of daily struggles through music. Depending mainly on the lyrics of the songs, the study also combines both the textual and the contextual analysis of the music. Music here is studied both as a text, and as an aspect of popular culture. The decade 1990-2000 in Kenya provides two contrasting political developments, which directly impacted on the ordinary Kenyan; firstly, the extremes of the country's one-party rule were at the peak until when multi-party democracy was re-introduced. This ushered in a new era, but with antecedents in one-party rule, where service delivery was below par and economic mismanagement, corruption, assassinations and detentions continued unabated. It is in this contrasting environment that popular arts proliferated as a way of countering the repressed freedom of expression. This book, therefore, looks at how the Gikuyu musicians reacted and responded to these social and political realities in their songs. Music is discussed as an essential site for creation, re-creation and negotiation of the various forms of identities. Maina wa Mutonya, from Kenya, is currently a research professor at the Center for Asian and African Studies at El Colegio de México, in México, charged with the responsibility of teaching African Literature, African Philosophy and Swahili.

    Abstract: While probing the politics of everyday in Gikuyu popular music, the main thrust of this book is to unpack the representation of daily struggles through music. Depending mainly on the lyrics of the songs, the study also combines both the textual and the contextual analysis of the music. Music here is studied both as a text, and as an aspect of popular culture. The decade 1990-2000 in Kenya provides two contrasting political developments, which directly impacted on the ordinary Kenyan; firstly, the extremes of the country's one-party rule were at the peak until when multi-party democracy was re-introduced. This ushered in a new era, but with antecedents in one-party rule, where service delivery was below par and economic mismanagement, corruption, assassinations and detentions continued unabated. It is in this contrasting environment that popular arts proliferated as a way of countering the repressed freedom of expression. This book, therefore, looks at how the Gikuyu musicians reacted and responded to these social and political realities in their songs. Music is discussed as an essential site for creation, re-creation and negotiation of the various forms of identities. Maina wa Mutonya, from Kenya, is currently a research professor at the Center for Asian and African Studies at El Colegio de México, in México, charged with the responsibility of teaching African Literature, African Philosophy and Swahili.

    Abstract: Music, Sound and Space is the first collection to integrate research from musicology and sound studies on music and sound as they mediate everyday life. Music and sound exert an inescapable influence on the contemporary world, from the ubiquity of MP3 players to the controversial use of sound as an instrument of torture. In this book, leading scholars explore the spatialisation of music and sound, their capacity to engender modes of publicness and privacy, their constitution of subjectivity, and the politics of sound and space. Taking a broadly feminist perspective, 'Rock On': women, ageing and popular music shifts popular music studies in a new direction. Focussing on British, American and Latina women performers and ageing, the collection investigates the cultural work performed by artists such as Shirley Bassey, Petula Clark, Madonna, Celia Cruz, Grace Jones and Courtney Love. The study crosses generations of performers and audiences enabling an examination of changing socio-historical contexts and an exploration of the relationships at play between performance strategies, star persona and the popular music press. For instance, the strategies employed by Madonna and Grace Jones to engage with the processes and issues related to public ageing are not the same as those employed by Courtney Love or Celia Cruz. The essays in this insightful collection reflect on the ways that artists and fans destabilise both the linear trajectories and the compelling weight of expectations regarding ageing by employing different modalities of resistance through persona re-invention, nostalgia, postmodern intertextuality and even early death as the ultimate denial of age
