Abstract: At the foothills of the Himalaya, along the border separating India and Nepal, Raji nomads still hunt for wild honey. They scale the trees of the great Terai forest, risking their lives to harvest the honey of the apis laboriosa - the largest migratory bee in the world. Both slave and master of the bees, Bahadur defies the towering trees and braves death for the survival of his people. After discovering written accounts of the Raji' way of life, photographer and filmmaker Eric Valli set out to discover what had become of these nomadic people.

Abstract: In 2010 Afghan musicologist Dr. Ahmad Sarmast opened the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM), a coeducational vocational music school in Kabul that teaches Afghan, Indian and Western music. In 2011 the Society for Education, Music and Music Education (SEMPRE), an organisation that was offering financial support for ANIM staff development, sent ethnomusicologist and film-maker John Baily to visit the school. Made in the observational cinema style, the film provides a lyrical portrayal of the school's activities, with an emphasis on the teaching, rehearsal and performance of the music, building up to a performance of Ravel's Bolero for the visiting Swedish Ambassador. The film projects a very positive image of young people in Afghanistan today, challenging the usual negative stereotypes favoured by Western media.

Abstract: In Digoli, a small village in the Indian Himalayas, "magical" rituals and arranged marriages remain a common part of the mountain culture. But with the arrival of mobile phones, the extension of the radio relay system, and the exodus of men to the cities, modernity has begun to exert its influence. One beacon of Digoli's newfound innovation is the development of Avani, a cooperative that produces delicate silk. For fifteen years, Avani has enabled women to become socially and economically independent. Hema, one member of the co-op, finds herself torn between a traditional lifestyle working in the fields to provide food for her parents, and the opportunity to weave silk for Avani. Hema is chosen to travel to New Delhi to sell silk, but ultimately chooses to returns home. At age twenty-nine, when she's considered too old for marriage, she weds a jobless poor man named Harish. Without property, cattle, or money, they move to a remote village, but Avani soon proposes that Hema start a weaving center to teach locals, including her husband. Filmmaker and noted artist Catherine Addor-Confino punctuates the film with her vivid paintings, adding an imaginative element to this inspiring story of one woman's entrepreneurial spirit.

Abstract: Playing with Nan is the story of a Nepali young man who migrated to work in a Nepali restaurant in northern Japan. The film explores his daily life at work and his family at home, which reflects socio-cultural problems related to globalization. Twenty-eight years ago, Ram was born in a rural village in Nepal. Working on the farm Ram saw little hope apart from surviving in the poor conditions. One day he decided to escape from the village and poverty. In Kathmandu he worked for 12 years at several restaurants. However, he could not change the family's situation. He heard a beautiful story from a broker about the work and earning opportunities in Japan. He paid the broker 20,000 USD to buy a work visa to enter in Japan. He borrowed the money from his relatives and friends with the commitment of paying back them later with a 20% interest. Several dramatic consequences occurred within Ram's life and his family's after his migration to Japan.

Abstract: The film depicts the daily struggle of fishermen to earn a living in a harsh physical environment that brings out the social and economic tensions of modern society. Manning the Priamo are Cola, the captain, Ahmed, the Tunisian first mate, two Italian engineers, and two Tunisian seamen. At sea for three weeks at a time, they fish off the coasts of Libya and Tunisia, sometimes outside the fishing limits and risking interception by the authorities. An intimate account of remoteness: after a few days on shore, the men leave their homes and families for a month. Night and day the nets are cast every four hours; the work is demanding and poorly paid; the quarters are cramped and uncomfortable; conflicts and prejudices surface amidst the roar of the engines and the sea. Beyond the horizon lies Africa, where immigrants embark for Europe, leaving their homes and families behind in the hope of finding a better life.

Dorji leaves his mystic image behind but not the mantras to control rain. His son, Duduk, a mask-maker and a compulsive lottery player believes that Sonam, his ten-year-old-son will get the power by the time he grows up. Sonam himself also aspires for this. Set in Sikkim in the eastern Himalayas of India, shot over nine years, Rain in the Mirror follows Sonam's journey to manhood through the conflicting milieus of tradition and modernity.

Abstract: John Palmer arrived in a Wichí community, located in Argentina, thirty years ago as an anthropologist - today he has married a Wichí woman with whom he has five sons in the last 5 years, who babble English, Wichí, and Spanish words. As the legal advisor of the Lapacho Mocho community, and as a part of the family, he works to obtain Qatu's freedom, a member of the Wichí community who has been in jail for 5 years waiting for an oral hearing on a charge of abusing his wife's daughter. The film gains depth and impact from its more intimate domestic interludes involving John's wife Tojweya their young children - including a baby only weeks old. So while Palmer has achieved considerable eminence in his field, winning the Royal Anthropological Institute's Lucy Mair Medal in 2009, his immersion into Wichí culture, history and customs has become much more than a matter of academic ethnography.

Abstract: Orania is situated in South Africa's barren Northern Cape province. All of its 800 inhabitants are white Afrikaners. They live here on private property which was bought in 1991. People of other cultural or ethnical descent may not live or work here. The people of Orania refuse to take part in the post-apartheid transformation process leading to a "Rainbow Nation". Crime, unemployment and social pressure make the inhabitants feel that their culture is under threat in the new South Africa. Consequently, they strive to stay ethnically exclusive, creating a "cultural homeland" to preserve their heritage. Yet, the individual motivations seem to range widely from idealism to opportunism to desperation. The film observes its protagonists on a personal level to explore the mechanisms behind this societal experiment.

Abstract: Imagine discovering an unsolved family mystery in your great-grandfather's letters - a mystery nobody in your family wants to talk about. My great-grandfather, Angelo Levi Bianchini, set out for Palestine on a diplomatic mission in the 1920s and never came back. After spending a few months in Palestine, he had become a vocal advocate for Jewish-Arab coexistence but his views were often unpopular. To his ninety year old daughter Angela, my grandmother, the mystery of his death remains an open wound. This is the story of a journey into the unresolved questions of the Middle Eastern conflict which are still being addressed today, ninety years after my great-grandfather's journey. In a land divided by a wall that in his time would have been unthinkable, today it seems that his dream has been destroyed forever. But in this ongoing state of conflict - the power of his voice still resonates today.

Abstract: Shooting for Democracy brings together voices of students in the world's smallest emerging democracy with those in one of the largest, most established democracies. The film is a vibrant portrayal of the United States and Bhutan during their national elections. Inspired by the first democratic elections ever to take place in Bhutan coinciding with the 2008 US presidential elections, Shooting for Democracy views the election process through the eyes of high school students in both countries as they participate in a video education program. The result is a unique mix of familiar similarities and stark contrasts on the perspectives and understanding of democracy. Combining professionally produced footage with excerpts from the students' work, the film follows personal experiences of the students while also exploring the social and political contexts of these distinct nations, now linked by their use of a democratic system.

Abstract: Ritual Burdens is part of the Afflictions : Culture and Mental Illness in Indonesia series of ethnographic films on severe mental illness in Indonesia, based on material drawn from 12 years of person-centered research by director and anthropologist Robert Lemelson. The film focuses on Ni Ketut Kasih who has lived her whole life surrounded by the complex rhythms of the Balinese ritual calendar. Here, participation in ritual events is both a spiritual mandate and social obligation for women who spend countless hours crafting offerings. Ni Ketut's masterful hand has contributed to her status as a highly respected ceremonial leader. However, the pressures of ritual requirements often overwhelm her, crowding her mind with memories of her difficult childhood during Indonesia's war for independence. This may trigger Ketut's bi-polar disorder episodes, for which she has been hospitalized over 35 times. Ni Ketut's case reveals the binding associations that may make certain burdens unbearable as cultural obligations, traumatic historical events, and personal experience overlap in unique schemas of stress that trigger cyclical episodes of mental illness.

Abstract: A documentary feature film about one man's journey across northern India and his search for enlightenment. Rajive McMullen, a history teacher suffering from a debilitating illness, makes the painful journey into the heart of Tantra, searching for meaning in holy shrines, coming close to death in cremation grounds and enjoying the chaos of the Aghori seekers. This film offers dramatic insight into Tantrik ideas about the life cycle, particularly death, and contributes much to our understanding of how we seek knowledge and how we die. The Lover and The Beloved also represents a realistic attempt to understand both the practice and illusive theory behind Indian Tantrism, and is intended to challenge widespread Western misinterpretations of this system of thought. Along the way we visit Kamakhya Devi in Assam and Tarapith in West Bengal, two of the most important centres of Tantrik Hinduism.

Keywords: Boran (African people) Agriculture ; Water-supply ; Wells ; South Africa ; Documentary films.
Abstract: The documentary follows the daily life which revolves around the ancient Erder wells, throughout the long dry season until the long-awaited rain comes. Every day the young shepherds form human chains, allowing them to reach the depths of the well and bring up the water. Their hard work is accompanied by a song which seems to draw the great herds as they slowly come near. After days and days of walking across dry and dusty land they are finally able to quench their thirst. During this time the well becomes a small integrated social system. By observing this world we can understand the delicate balance of the relationship between man and Nature that governs the existence of nomadic people in the Horn of Africa. In modern times, their survival is threatened by profound climatic changes and significant alterations in the natural rain cycle. Through interaction with several characters from this place, the film introduces us to a water management system that allows the Borana shepherds to manage the small quantity of available water as the property and right of everyone, in one of the driest inhabited regions in the world.

Abstract: In the 21st century, many ancestral beliefs are struggling to survive in a hostile, fast-changing world. In southeast Côte d'Ivoire, some Akan communities still make contact with the spirits through Komians or animistic priests who go into a trance and are possessed by the spirits of the Forest and the Waters. In Return to the Land of Souls, Yéo Douley, a disciple of Jean Marie Addiaffi, will set out on a journey to visit his master's grave and carry out a ritual libation. On his travel, he will attend the initiation rites of three people chosen by the spirits and witness one of them proclaimed as the new Komian, or high animistic priest.

Abstract: Shadows & Illuminations follows an older Balinese man, Nyoman Kereta, as he struggles with the intrusion of spirits into his consciousness. Kereta says he has been living in two worlds, the world of his family and community and the world of the spirits, for the past 40 years. His experiences skirt the borders of cultural and spiritual norms, simultaneously manifesting and exceeding Balinese beliefs about the supernatural world and the possibilities for human interaction with it. Kereta's reported experiences seem credible or explicable to some, bizarre and extraordinary to others, enigmatic or doubtful to his wife, and the sign of major mental illness to his psychiatrist. The film documents his painful history of trauma, loss and poisoning, and draws on his other family member's interpretations of how to understand his struggles and distress. Central questions of how to interpret his experiences, and what role a schizophrenia diagnosis entails are explored.

Keywords: Bedford trucks. ; Mechanics (Persons) ; Trucks Design and construction. ; Bhutan ; Nonfiction films.
Abstract: A film about mobility, human creativity, and technology in a Sudanese truck community. The English Bedford-Lorry was introduced to Sudan in the late 1960s. Since then, local craftsmen technically modify the truck into an ideal vehicle, adequate for traveling off-road and for performing customers' expectations. The craftsmen and drivers call the lorry "Sifinja" because it is soft and comfortable like the plastic slippers it is named after. In different places in Sudan the carpenters and blacksmiths not only create a shiny iron bride, but they change the whole structure of the lorry through a highly unorthodox performance. Following closely the daily work, art and history of truck-modding on the Nile, a fascinating way of African creativity dealing with global commodities - the automobiles - is opened up. The documentary weaves the original sound of hammering and sawing, drilling and riveting, into a rhythmic, exhilarating audio-visual adventure.

Abstract: Located on the North China Plain about 200 miles south of Beijing, 'Song Family Village' is home to about 1,300 people. Some 80% of all villagers are members of a single lineage of the Song surname. The film documents New Year's customs to demonstrate the segmentary structure of the Song family lineage. Ancestor temples provide the focus for collective rituals that express historical growth and subsequent fissioning into lineage segments. Minimal segments (Wufu or mourning groups) are shown as interaction groups focused on the household shrines of senior living agnates. Although the Communist-led Cultural Revolution tried to eliminate traditional kin-based institutions, this film shows that segmentary lineages are still a vigorous aspect of life in this North China village.

Abstract: This film outlines the types of marriage exchange practiced in a Chinese village over the last fifty years. Dowry, brideprice and exchange marriages have dominated the marriage market in turn as villagers have responded to changes in economic, political and social conditions. At present, the practice of 'pseudodowry' (indirect exchange) marks the ability of young women to demand large payments of cash from the groom's family, which are used to create prestigious public displays of wedding gifts for the bride. A historical overview links the personal life of Mao Zedong to issues of parental authority in arranging marriages.

Abstract: Breeding Cells is a film from the laboratory of reproduction. A fertility clinic is a place where human reproduction is separated from sex and anatomized into bio/technological components. There fertilization is made visible and manipulable on a cellular level while the couples themselves seem to become marginal participants in a process that involves a large number of different professionalized agents and technologies. Recorded in the ward of reproductional medicine at Charite Hospital Berlin, this documentary approaches a scientific environment with an experimental ethnographic gaze. The filmmakers meet an open and quite unexcited "fertility team", who consider themselves simply assistants of nature. But what is nature in a hospital environment that is highly regulated by procedural methods, doctors conventions and conservative laws? Closely describing the routines and moral concerns of the medical staff, the film is portraying a transition time, when biotechnological science fiction is turning into everyday life.

Abstract: The film tells the story of Vasile Nedea, a Romanian gypsy musician an Amsterdam. Due to his former illegal status there have been times in which he was forced to show his skills whilst busking the streets. However, his extraordinary talent has not remained unrecognised, as he is currently playing in the Netherlands and Western Europe's most famous concert halls. The film takes the audience on a journey through the diverse musical world of Vasile Nedea during a transitional period on his road to success. Following an observational cinematographic style, the film allows the viewer to travel along with Vasile to witness some of the encounters he frequently has in numerous different musical settings. It also tries to stimulate the viewer to think about his or her own image of 'the other' and tries to leave the viewer realising his views might have shifted somewhat during this forty minutes of anthropological and music minded documentary.

Abstract: Most weddings in the village still reflect traditional patterns of patrilineal descent and patrilocal residence. The bride leaves her natal home to marry into her husband's village, where she is a stranger among his many agnates (patrilineal kin). Recent changes in the village economy have strengthened the bargaining position of women and the present marriage customs reflect this process. In this film, the bride refuses to kowtow to the groom's relatives, reflecting her ability to defy patriarchal traditions.

Abstract: Operation Wallacea is a UK based group of scientists who have established a conservation strategy with outposts in 6 areas of the world which they consider to be biodiversity hotspots. A rainforest area of the Island of Buton, off the south coast of Sulawesi in Indonesia is the locus of this video. Operation Wallacea's scientists have been active here for a number of years, operating by a 4 stage process in which they survey the level of biological diversity, plan ways to maintain it, help the local people develop strategies to maintain income without harming the ecology and work to obtain grants to help development in the local area.

Abstract: Returned follows several Nepali child soldiers including Asha, a young Nepali girl, who was sent home from the Maoists' People's Liberation Army after the ceasefire. Asha joined the Maoist army when she was 14-years-old. For this young low caste girl, joining the Maoists was a pathway to a future with education and employment. Despite two years of being on the frontlines, her biggest concern was what would await her when she returned home. Would she turn to commercial sex work, become a domestic slave, or would she be banished from her home and forced into marriage?
Abstract: Long version: Imagine being forced to leave your family and fight in war you don't understand - and you are only eleven years old. Sadly, for many of these child soldiers in Nepal this is a reality and the peace process has not solved their problems. These children quickly discovered that the return home is even more painful than the experience of war.

Abstract: In India water has a deep spiritual and functional significance. The Rising Wave explores both these aspects; worshipped as a sacred common while also being essential for generating livelihood. The film eloquently presents a culture built on water being shared, used and managed in ways unchanged for centuries. Richly filmed in three different states of India, The Rising Wave uncovers groups that have been dependant on their local natural water resource for generations as they fish and farm for livelihood. In the rapidly transforming economy of India, corporations now lay claim to control and determine access to this natural resource. A contrasting picture emerges; a contrast between the two divergent views of water; water as a billion dollar industry against water as a sacred natural gift for all humankind. This spells conflict for the future.

Abstract: A once unremarkable site of multi-faith pilgrimage to a Sufi Saint has been transformed and its local history rewritten - the film documents the journey of Charlotte, a student undertaking her PhD research in India, who, whilst researching religious pilgrimages, stumbles upon the politicisation of a pilgrimage site in western India. The research suggests that the pilgrimage site of Kalo Dungar or Black Mountain, situated in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, provides a micro-example of current political issues in India today, where by the 'unity in diversity' of the country is slowly being broken-down destroying any hope of communal peace.

Abstract: This documentary is made by Andy Lawrence in collaboration with independent midwife Judith Kurutac. They met in Kurutac's thirteenth year of practice when she supported Lawrence's partner, Helen Knowles (Birth Rites' curator), through the birth of their second child at home. For Kurutac the collaboration was a chance for film to capture the important relationship between a woman and her attendant in pregnancy and birth. The film is a personal journey, examining the roles the collaborators play as father and midwife, stimulated by their engagement with two couples who encounter very different experiences of birth. The film draws us into an examination of the connection between birth and death to explore what role fear plays in childbirth and how the ways in which we deal with fear affect the way in which a child is born.

Abstract: In 1997 Robert Gardner visited friend and well-known American painter Sean Scully in his Barcelona studio. He documented the making of two paintings, Testigos and Passenger, and the opening of “Sean Scully 1987-1997” at Salas del Palacio Episcopal in Malaga. This video, an important document of an influential modern artist, brings together the three short films made during that summer. Testigos - 10 minutes: Testigos is a small painting done when Gardner and Scully worked together in Barcelona. The title, which means 'witnesses,' is the name of a small island in the Caribbean. Testigos, and at least one other painting, was made on the days that the larger canvas Passenger was drying. Passenger - 25 minutes: In Passenger, Gardner made what he calls “an observation in four movements.” The intent of the piece is to impart an experience of the engagement by Scully with the work in question, an engagement which is both physical and emotional. The only sounds are those made by the artist as he works and, occasionally, musical passages from tapes Scully listens to while he is painting. Scully in Malaga - 7 minutes: A short film acknowledging the efforts of those responsible for installing the exhibition “Sean Scully 1987-1997” in Malaga. Equally important, the film captures Scully's parents dancing their beloved 'paso doble' in the midst of their son's work.

Abstract: Every winter, over a period of six days, the lamas of Lingthem's village monastery hold their annual cham. These dramatic ritual masked dances impart elementary Buddhist teachings while providing entertainment to villagers. Their main purpose is to remove obstacles and ward off misfortune for the village, its inhabitants and the monastery. However, for lamas and more serious Buddhist practitioners, these cham and their rituals hold deep philosophical meanings. The dances were beautifully filmed by Dawa Tsering Lepcha in his own village monastery in the Lepcha reserve of Dzongu, North Sikkim. In the course of this village event, the deities who emerge in the period between death and rebirth make their rhythmic appearances followed by the Lord of Death who judges one's good and bad deeds in the after life. This film is the second produced by the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology as part of its visual anthropology project. This training program for indigenous filmmakers aims to produce a documented video record of Sikkim's vanishing indigenous and Buddhist cultures. Its primary purpose is to record and preserve the meaning and proper performance of Sikkim's rituals within their social and economic context.

They are the Baaka pygmies, who sing and dance to appeal to the spirits of hunting and honey gathering. Their life is a never-ending song that expresses their intense spirituality and their deep communion with the forest. Produced under the High Patronage of Unesco, this film follows the daily lives of a group of Baaka, who live only of hunting, honey gathering and singing. Abstract: In northern Amazonia, in one of the most inaccessible forests of Brazil, the Wajapi live an existence preserved from modern influence. Fleeing from white people, their diseases, massacres, and forest clearance, they tried to preserve their identity and their way of life. Here, painting one's skin red is a way of maintaining a link with a very ancient civilization. The Wajapi have a long history of using vegetable dyes to adorn their bodies with geometric motifs and symbols, the jenipa kusiwara. Over the centuries, they have developed a unique communication system - a rich blend of graphic and verbal components - that reflects their world-view and enables them to hand down knowledge about community life.

Abstract: "Q2P is a film about toilets and the city. It sifts through the dream of Mumbai as a future Shanghai and searches for public toilets, watching who has to queue to pee. As the film observes who has access to toilets and who doesn't, we begin to also see the imagination of gender that underlies the city's shape, the constantly shifting boundaries between public and private space; we learn of small acts of survival that people in the city's bottom half cobble together and quixotic ideas of social change that thrive with mixed results; we hear the silence that surrounds toilets and sense how similar it is to the silence that surrounds inequality. The toilet becomes a riddle with many answers and some of those answers are questions--about gender, about class, about caste and most of all about space, urban development and the twisted myth of the global metropolis"--Original container.

Abstract: The film recounts the life of children living on the street in Gondar, Ethiopia, by witnessing the interaction between two children and myself. The entire film was shot in the room of Ethiopia Hotel. This limited space allows the film to focus on our communication and captures some of the ideas that enable them to endure and survive on the street. Indeed, this film is more a sensitive testimony than a scientific documentary. This hybrid approach aims to explore new trends in visual anthropology, including the issue of dealing with intimacy and subjectivity.

Abstract: "Alampu is a beautiful and exceedingly remote village in Nepal. The majority of the settlers there are Thami people, one of the indigenous groups of Nepal. More than 90 percent of them are involved in the slate production at Alampu. This film includes technical details about the slate production in the mountainside mine, and how the slate is worked prior to distribution. In the film we see the social relationships, co-operation between the miners, and the intimacy of the mining families. Strong women perform the tough and arduous work alongside the men. They have to carry heavy slate loads far to sell them. The film also describes the socio-cultural life of the village and its interaction with the environment. The activities of the men and women in the mine, as well as in the village, have an almost poetic dimension."--RAI.

Abstract: "Business Process Outsourcing" is the fastest growing industry in the world. In India, approximately 350,000 people are currently working in call centres to maintain the contact between western companies and their customers. Vikhee Uppal is one of them. From a busy office in Calcutta, he pretends to be a guy named Ethan Reed and calls Americans, Brits and Australians to try and sell them cell phones and subscriptions. Vikhee hopes to make it in this sector. On the bulletin board, we see that he and his colleagues keep track of who sells the most. The Americans are the most impolite: they yell at the salespeople and hang up on them. The English, on the contrary, are the most willing to listen to their sales pitch. Even though Vikhee pretends to be a westerner at work, Indian traditions remain very important for him. He wants to get married to a girl from Punjab, and if he doesn't succeed, his family will find a bride for him. At work, Vekhee gets tutored in English. Each night, he watches English soccer matches to see what the people on the other end of the line actually look like.

Abstract: In Yemen, the land of Queen Saba, a wide variety of veils can be found. In the capital Sanaa, the women, although at first sight appearing to all be wearing but black, distinguish themselves one from the other through this diversity. Each veil not only carries its own symbolism, but the variety of ways of wearing each becomes a form of expression. It becomes a game of what one hides and what one unveils. Approaching the veil from a fashion standpoint, this film offers a different perspective on this highly and debated topic.
