    Abstract: Ruling Women is the first study of its kind devoted to an analysis of the debate concerning government by women in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on a wide range of political, feminist and dramatic texts, Conroy sets out to demonstrate that the dominant discourse which upholds patriarchy at the time is frequently in conflict with alternative discourses which frame gynæcocracy as a feasible, and laudable reality, and which reconfigure (wittingly or unwittingly) the normative paradigm of male authority. Central to the argument is an analysis of how the discourse which constructs government as a male prerogative quite simply implodes when juxtaposed with the traditional political discourse of virtue ethics. In Government, Virtue, and the Female Prince in Seventeenth-Century France, the first volume of the two-volume study, the author examines the dominant discourse which excludes women from political authority before turning to the configuration of women and rulership in the pro-woman and egalitarian discourses of the period. Highly readable and engaging, Conroy’s work will appeal to those interested in the history of women in political thought and the history of feminism, in addition to scholars of seventeenth-century literature and history of ideas

    Abstract: "The distinction between male and female, or masculinity and femininity, has long been considered as foundational to society and the organization of its institutions. In the last decades, the massive literature on gender has challenged this discursive construction. Gender has been disassembled and reassembled, variously considered as social practice, performance, ideology. Yet, the binary relationship man/woman continues to be a characteristic trait of Western societies. This book gathers together contributions by experts in various fields including law, sociology, philosophy and anthropology to pin down the relation between institutions and the gender binary. Centrally, it examines the way in which the present-day gender binary is shored up by the conceptualization and regulation of sex and gender at a societal and institutional level. Based on this examination, it tackles the issue of what the practices and processes of subjectivation are that preserve this binary distinction as the foundation of gender. Each of the chapters discuss this pressing question with a view to considering if current equality policies challenge hierarchical and hegemonic understandings of gender, or if they are the residue of a sexist understanding of gender. This analysis then paves the way for a more general and crucial question: whether institutions can, or should contribute to the process of deconstructing the gender binary."--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: Bruno Latour ist in den letzten Jahren zu einem der meistdiskutierten und einflussreichsten Autoren der Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften aufgestiegen. Er wird nicht nur rege gelesen und zitiert, mittlerweile schließen auch unzählige Forschungen an seine Schriften an und auch in der Lehre besitzt er bereits einen festen Platz in vielen Grundkursen und Überblicksvorlesungen. Weil zugleich aber kaum zu übersehen ist, dass die Vorbehalte gegenüber Latour immer noch groß sind, zielt die vorliegende Einführung darauf, zunächst die zentralen Motive und Konzepte dieses auf den ersten Blick immens heterogenen Werkes zu erschließen. Sie möchte den Weg in ein Denken bahnen, das dem eigenen Anspruch nach eine grundsätzliche Alternative zu eingespielten Ansätzen der Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften formuliert. Vor diesem Hintergrund muss man sich Latour - so die These des Buches - als einen überaus systematischen und kohärenten Denker vorstellen. Um dies aufzuzeigen, folgt die Einführung dem Werdegang seines Werkes und versucht die Kernannahmen herauszuarbeiten, die im Anschluss an die noch kaum erschlossenen Schriften aus der Dissertationszeit in den Wissenschafts- und Technikstudien sichtbar werden und die schließlich zur Entwicklung der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie und zahlreichen allgemeinen philosophischen und soziologischen Beiträgen führen. Aufbauend hierauf werden schließlich die jüngeren Werke von Latour diskutiert, die sich in gesellschaftstheoretischer Absicht mit den Existenzweisen der Modernen oder wie in Kampf um Gaia mit der ökologischen Krise und den Möglichkeiten einer neuen Politik der Natur befassen. Die Zielgruppen Studierende und Lehrende der Soziologie, Philosophie, Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften. Die Autoren Dr. Lars Gertenbach vertritt seit Oktober 2017 die Professur für Politische Soziologie an der Universität Bielefeld und ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Universität Kassel. Dr. Henning Laux vertritt seit Oktober 2017 die Professur für Allgemeine Soziologie an der Universität Hamburg

    Abstract: After a long time of neglect, Artificial Intelligence is once again at the center of most of our political, economic, and socio-cultural debates. Recent advances in the field of Artifical Neural Networks have led to a renaissance of dystopian and utopian speculations on an AI-rendered future. Algorithmic technologies are deployed for identifying potential terrorists through vast surveillance networks, for producing sentencing guidelines and recidivism risk profiles in criminal justice systems, for demographic and psychographic targeting of bodies for advertising or propaganda, and more generally for automating the analysis of language, text, and images. Against this background, the aim of this book is to discuss the heterogenous conditions, implications, and effects of modern AI and Internet technologies in terms of their political dimension: What does it mean to critically investigate efforts of net politics in the age of machine learning algorithms?

    Abstract: Cultural factors shape the symbolic environment in which contentious politics take place. Among these factors, collective memories are particularly relevant: they can help collective action by providing symbolic material from the past, but at the same time they can constrain people's ability to mobilise by imposing proscriptions and prescriptions. This book analyses the relationship between social movements and collective memories: how do social movements participate in the building of public memory? And how does public memory, and in particular the media’s representation of a contentious past, influence strategic choices in contemporary movements? To answer these questions the book draws its focus on the evolution of the representation of specific events in the Italian and Spanish student movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Furthermore, through qualitative interviews to contemporary student activists in both countries, it investigates the role of past waves of contention in shaping the present through the publicly discussed image of the past

    Abstract: Paul-Hermann Gruner untersucht drei prominente, erfolgreiche Frauenzeitschriften (Brigitte, Für Sie, Freundin) auf die in ihnen vermittelten Konzepte von Weiblichkeit vor dem Hintergrund von fünf Jahrzehnten erfolgreicher Existenzgeschichte der „Neuen Frauenbewegung“. Die interdisziplinär angelegte Studie analysiert im Wirkfeld Sprache und Massenkommunikation, Mentalität, Mythenproduktion und Doing Gender. Es offenbart sich eine große inhaltliche wie visuelle Homogenität in der weltanschaulichen Konstruktion von Geschlecht: Die Diskursnarrative zur „Weiblichkeit“ - festgemacht an Themenkomplexen wie Schönheit, Kosmetik, Wohnen, Dekoration, Lifestyle, Kochen und Diät - konfigurieren dabei eine geschlechtsspezifische Konventionalität ohne Konservativismus.     Abstract: Michael Tunç untersucht, inwiefern sich Prozesse des Zusammenwirkens der Differenzlinien Geschlecht, Ethnizität und Klasse bei ethnisch minorisierten Vätern/Vätern of Color (PoC) rekonstruieren lassen. Der Autor präsentiert aktuelle Begriffe, Ansätze und Ergebnisse der Männlichkeits- und Väterlichkeitsforschung. Für emanzipative Entwicklungen arbeitet er den Begriff der progressiven Männlichkeit aus, mit dem sich Spannungen zwischen hegemonialen und progressiven Deutungsmustern von Männlichkeit/Väterlichkeit migrantischer Männer/PoC angemessen analysieren lassen. Er stellt intersektionale rassismuskritisch-migrationsgesellschaftliche Ansätze vor und überträgt sie auf diversitätsbewusste Väterarbeit.     Abstract: Das vorliegende Buch ist eine der ersten empirischen Untersuchungen zur gewalttätigen salafistischen Jugendszene in Deutschland.     Abstract: Corinna Oschatz zeigt am Beispiel des Klimawandels, was Rezipienten aus den Medien über Politik lernen. Anhand eines Mehrmethodendesigns aus einer Inhaltsanalyse und einer zweiwelligen Panelbefragung untersucht sie, wie die Medien über zentrale wissenschaftliche und politische Aspekte des Klimawandels berichten, welche Medien Rezipienten nutzen, um sich zu informieren, und zu welchen Aspekten sie Wissen erwerben. Die Befunde zeigen eine Schere zwischen der Berichterstattung und der Informationsnutzung: Während Onlinemedien am häufigsten über den Klimawandel berichten, informieren sich die Rezipienten vor allem in den öffentlich-rechtlichen Nachrichten und der Regionalpresse.     Abstract: This volume intends to re-establish social gerontology as a discipline that has pragmatic links to policy and practice. Collectively, the chapters enrich public debates about the moral, cultural and economic questions surrounding aging, thereby ameliorating the “problems” associated with aging societies. This volume is uniquely cross-cultural, theory-driven and cross-disciplinary. It fills a gap in the gerontological scholarship of the global south that is predominantly descriptive and empirical. Based on original research, this volume examines in particular the sociological question of inequality and its intersection with age, gender, health, family and social relations. In the process, the studies herein highlight the unique historical, institutional and social systems that govern the subjective experience of aging in diverse contexts globally. Specifically, societies in transition including India, Lebanon, Nigeria, Japan, China, Israel and in Europe are studied while connecting the micro-social experience of aging (loneliness, wellbeing, discrimination, relationships and resilience) with larger temporal and political contexts. This exercise generates intellectual capital that reformulates links between aging research and policy in innovative ways. Overall, the volume echoes the global scientific commitment to understand the socio-cultural process of aging in transitional societies and utilizes rich opportunities for cross-fertilization of ideas, disciplines and methods to advance the gerontological promise of critical inquiry, training and practice

    Abstract: This volume brings together the experiences and research of heritage practitioners, archaeologists, and educators to explore new and unique approaches to heritage studies. The last several decades have witnessed a rapid increase in the field of cultural heritage studies worldwide. This increase in the number of studies and in interest by the public as well as academics has effected substantial change in the understanding of heritage and approaches to heritage studies. This change has also impacted the perception of communities, how to study and protect the physical residues of heritage, and how to share the knowledge of heritage. It has brought the issue of who has knowledge and how the value of heritage can be shared more effectively with communities who then ascribe meaning and value to heritage materials. Heritage studies, until a few decades ago, exclusively studied the material culture of the past as part of elitist approaches that completely neglected communities’ rights to knowledge of their own heritage. Additionally, heritage practitioners and archaeologists neither shared this knowledge nor engaged with communities about their heritage. Communities were also mostly deprived from contributing to heritage and archaeological studies. This kind of top-down approach was quite common in many parts of the world. But recent studies and research in the field have shown the importance of including the public in projects, and that sharing the knowledge produced through heritage studies and archaeological works is significant for the protection and preservation of heritage materials; it has finally been understood that excluding the public from heritage is not ethical. This publication presents a wide array of case studies with different approaches and methods from many parts of the world to answer these questions

Es zielt darauf ab, die Konstruktionsprinzipien und Sinnzuschreibungen, mit denen städtische Wirklichkeit hergestellt wird, zu erfassen. Hierfür wird interdisziplinär an die Forschung zur Eigenlogik von Städten angeknüpft und Wissenssoziologie mit psychologischer Konstruktionstheorie verbunden. Aus rund 350 Interviews werden allgemeine Prinzipien zur gesellschaftlichen Konstruktion der Stadt herausgearbeitet. Ein Kernergebnis ist der ‚soziale Sinnraum städtischer Wirklichkeit’, der die Bezogenheiten der Konstruktionsprinzipien zueinander erörtert, und damit eine Theorie zur Soziologie der Städte aufstellt. Anhand einzelner Städte wird gezeigt, wie spezifische Sinnzuschreibungen das relationale Feld städtischer Wirklichkeiten ausdifferenzieren. Der Autor zeigt, dass Stadt nicht nur über die Eigenschaften Größe, Dichte und Heterogenität zu einem gefühlten Gegenstand des Alltags wird, sondern vor allem in ihren qualitativen Effekten. Das Buch liefert damit ebenso grundlegende Erkenntnisse für die stadtsoziologische Empirie und Theoriebildung wie auch für die praxisorientierte Stadtplanung und -entwicklung. The book subsequently seeks to answer several important questions: When did globalization begin and what insights into contemporary globalization may be gained from older forms? How does globalization differ in different places, and how can different instances of globalization be compared? Who is affected by globalization, how are they affected, and how do these effects vary, if at all, over time and space? As world-systems analysis and studies of globalization require interdisciplinary expertise, the contributing authors draw on many fields, including anthropology, economics, geography, philosophy, political science, sociology, and world history. The book’s overall goal is to facilitate the dialogue between approaches that, at times, seem to “talk at cross-purposes,” and to extend an invitation to scholars from many different areas to explore globalization

    Abstract: Dieses essential stellt in komprimierter Form den Stand der Stadtforschung zum Thema Gentrifizierung dar. Dieser in der Wissenschaft bereits seit den 1960iger-Jahren verwendete Begriff hat sich inzwischen auch in der öffentlichen Debatte eingebürgert. Er beschreibt, wie steigende Mieten in den Städten und der Mangel an bezahlbaren Wohnraum dazu führen, dass ärmere Bewohnerinnen und -bewohner aus ihren Vierteln verdrängt werden. Dabei wird deutlich, in welcher Weise es sich bei der Gentrifizierung um ein allgemeines Prinzip von Stadtentwicklung handelt und damit eine erhebliche Herausforderung der sozialen Mischung unserer Städte einhergeht.     Abstract: Eine interdisziplinäre Verständigung über Kultur ist fällig und notwendig, um dem gegenwärtig weit verbreiteten Eindruck entgegenzuwirken, „Kultur“ habe sich als semantisches Irrlicht und als obsolet gewordener Gegenstand von Forschung erwiesen, weil der Begriff unüberschaubare wie unvereinbare Bedeutungsmomente bündele und aus einem bloßen Gespinst von Mehrdeutigkeiten bestehe. Demgegenüber wird in diesem Buch die Überzeugung vertreten, dass es gewinnbringend ist, die spezifischen Kompetenzen aus der Kultursoziologie und Populärkulturforschung, aus der Theorie des Kulturmanagements und der Medienkultur sowie aus der Kulturphilosophie zusammenzubringen, um zu zeigen, dass es trotz und gleichsam unterhalb der notorischen Vieldeutigkeit des Wortes „Kultur“ einen gemeinsamen Sachzusammenhang namens Kultur gibt, von dem die einzelnen Fachdisziplinen jeweils bestimmte Faktoren in den Blick nehmen und kraft ihrer eigenen Methoden erhellen. Dr. Anja Gregor ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl für Allgemeine und theoretische Soziologie der FSU Jena. Sie ist Expertin für Biographieforschung und Geschlechtersoziologie. In ihrer Dissertation hat sie eine Biographieforschung im Bereich der Intersexualität durchgeführt

    Abstract: This volume brings into focus a range of emergent issues related to women in the Indian diaspora. The conditions propelling women’s migration and their experiences during the process of migration and settlement have always been different and very specific to them. Standing ‘in-between’ the two worlds of origin and adoption, women tend to experience dialectic tensions between freedom and subjugation, but they often use this space to assert independence, and to redefine their roles and perceptions of self. The  central idea in this volume is to understand women’s agency in addressing and redressing the complex issues faced by them; in restructuring the cultural formats of patriarchy and gender relations; managing the emerging conflicts over what is to be transmitted to the following generations,; renegotiating their domestic roles and embracing new professional and educational successes; and adjusting to the institutional structures of the host state. The essays included in the volume discuss women in the Indian diaspora from multidisciplinary perspectives involving social, economic, cultural, and political aspects. Such an effort privileges diasporic women’s experiences and perspectives in the academia and among policy makers.
