    Abstract: Ruling Women is the first study of its kind devoted to an analysis of the debate concerning government by women in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on a wide range of political, feminist and dramatic texts, Conroy sets out to demonstrate that the dominant discourse which upholds patriarchy at the time is frequently in conflict with alternative discourses which frame gynæcocracy as a feasible, and laudable reality, and which reconfigure (wittingly or unwittingly) the normative paradigm of male authority. Central to the argument is an analysis of how the discourse which constructs government as a male prerogative quite simply implodes when juxtaposed with the traditional political discourse of virtue ethics. In Government, Virtue, and the Female Prince in Seventeenth-Century France, the first volume of the two-volume study, the author examines the dominant discourse which excludes women from political authority before turning to the configuration of women and rulership in the pro-woman and egalitarian discourses of the period. Highly readable and engaging, Conroy’s work will appeal to those interested in the history of women in political thought and the history of feminism, in addition to scholars of seventeenth-century literature and history of ideas

    Abstract: This book examines the needs, aspirations, strategies, and challenges of transnational Muslim migrants in Europe with regard to family practices such as marriage, divorce, and parenting. Critically re-conceptualizing 'wellbeing' and unpacking its multiple dimensions in the context of Muslim families, it investigates how migrants make sense of and draw on different norms, laws, and regimes of knowledge as they navigate different aspects of family relations and life in a transnational social space. With attention to issues such as registration of marriage, civil versus religious marriage, spousal roles and rights, polygamy, parenting, child wellbeing, and everyday security, the authors offer national and comparative case studies of Muslim families from different parts of the world, covering different family bonds and relations, within both extended and nuclear families.Based on empirical research in the Nordic region and further afield, this volume affords a more complete understanding of the practices of transnational migrant families, as well as the processes through which family relations and rights are negotiated between family members and with state institutions and laws, whilst contributing to the growing literature on migrant wellbeing. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology and social policy with interests in migration and transnational communities, wellbeing, and the family.

    Abstract: Felix Tirschmann untersucht Spuren, die der Tod im Alltag hinterlässt. Er durchleuchtet die Topoi der sozialpolitischen Debatten, betrachtet die unterschiedlichen Todesbilder in Öffentlichkeit und Wissenschaft und führt Interviews mit Experten und Laien. Die dichte Interpretation der Gespräche dokumentiert: Der Alltag des Todes ist kein karger Ort sinnentleerter Tätigkeiten, sondern sinnerfüllt und äußerst resistent gegenüber jeder Form von Desymbolisierung. Doch die im sozialen Handeln zwischen Lebenden und Sterbenden entstehenden Lösungen sind nicht von Dauer. Manchmal können sie an individuelle Bedürfnisse angepasst werden. Nur selten überdauern sie den Moment. Im Suchen und Finden partieller Lösungen liegt die Aufgabe einer wissenssoziologischen Thanatologie, die deutlich machen will, dass es nicht nur eine, sondern mehrere und sogar unterschiedliche Todbedeutungen geben kann. Alltagspragmatisch zeigt sie, was hilft. Gesellschaftstheoretisch zeigt sie, wie es kommen musste, dass die Bedeutung des Todes sich wandelte.     Abstract: This book examines rural-urban migration policies in China, and considers how Chinese workers cope with migration events in the context of these policies. It explores the contribution of migrant workers to the Chinese economy, the impact of changes within the ‘hukou’ system (household registration) and the impact of recent migration policies promoting rural-urban migration and targeting key events during migrant workers’ migration trajectories - job-seeking, wage exploitation, work injuries and illness - namely the corresponding ‘Skills Training Program for Migrant Workers’, the ‘Circular on Managing Wage Payment to Migrant Workers’, the ‘Circular on Migrant Workers Participating in Work-Related Injury Insurance’, and the ‘New Rural Medical Cooperative Scheme’ (Health Insurance). Through in-depth interviews, it examines how when facing such challenges, migrant workers choose to either make a claim under existing policies, or use other coping strategies. The book notably proposes a typology of “coping” which includes a variety of administrative coping, political coping and social coping, and considers how workers in China harness the power of civil groups and social networks

    Abstract: This book examines how the shifts in the early 19th century in New York City affected children in particular. Indeed, one could argue that within this context, that “children” and “childhood” came into being. In order to explore this, the skeletal remains of the children buried at the small, local, yet politically radical Spring Street Presbyterian Church are detailed. Population level analyses are combined with individual biological profiles from sorted burials and individual stories combed from burial records and archival data. What emerges are life histories of children-of infants, toddlers, younger children, older children, and adolescents-during this time of transition in New York City. When combined with historical data, these life histories, for instance, tell us about what it was like to grow up in this changing time in New York City

    Abstract: At a time of societal urgency surrounding ecological crises from depleted fisheries to mineral extraction and potential pathways towards environmental and ecological justice, this book re-examines ecologically unequal exchange (EUE) from a historical and comparative perspective. The theory of ecologically unequal exchange posits that core or northern consumption and capital accumulation is based on peripheral or southern environmental degradation and extraction. In other words, structures of social and environmental inequality between the Global North and Global South are founded in the extraction of materials from, as well as displacement of waste to, the South. This volume represents a set of tightly interlinked papers attempting to assess ecologically unequal exchange and to move it forward. Chapters are organised into three main sections: theoretical foundations and critical reflections on ecologically unequal exchange; empirical research on mining, deforestation, fisheries, and the like; and strategies for responding to the adverse consequences associated with unequal ecological exchange.     Abstract: This book examines how the way we conceive of, or measure, the environment changes the way we interact with it. Thomas Smith posits that environmentalism and sustainable development have become increasingly post-political, characterised by abstraction, and quantification to an unprecedented extent. As such, the book argues that our ways of measuring both the environment, such as through sustainability metrics like footprints and Payments for Ecosystem Services, and society, through gross domestic product and wellbeing measures, play a constitutive and problematic role in how we conceive of ourselves in the world. Subsequently, as the quantified environmental approach drives a dualistic wedge between the human and non-human realms, in its final section the book puts forward recent developments in new materialism and feminist ethics of care as providing practical ways of re-founding sustainable development in a way that firmly acknowledges human-ecological relations.     Abstract: Alles dreht sich ums Geld. Keine irgendwie geartete individuelle oder kollektive Praxis, keine technologische oder wissenschaftliche Entwicklung scheint ohne Geld denkbar zu sein. Seit langer Zeit wird Geld aber auch kritisiert, doch der Gedanke an eine ‚Gesellschaft nach dem Geld‘ löst Widerstand und Befremden aus.     Abstract: The wide-ranging European perspectives collected here aim to analyse, by means of an interdisciplinary approach, the numerous implications of a massive shift in the conception of “work” and the category of “worker.” Economic crisis and digitalization have exacerbated a crisis in those categories of thought and political action that previously allowed us to discuss-and problematize-vulnerability in employment in terms of unfairness, inequality, and inadequate protection. Engaging with the deconstruction of traditional employment as a central category for theorizing the phenomenon of work, this volume explores the new semantic fields and territories that have become available for theorising, understanding, and regulating employment.     Abstract: "The idea of etnos came into being over a hundred years ago as a way of understanding the collective identities of people with a common language and shared traditions. In the twentieth century, the concept came to be associated with Soviet state-building, and it fell sharply out of favour. Yet outside the academy, etnos-style arguments not only persist, but are a vibrant part of regional anthropological traditions. Life Histories of Etnos Theory in Russia and Beyond makes a powerful argument for reconsidering the importance of etnos in our understanding of ethnicity and national identity across Eurasia. The collection brings to life a rich archive of previously unpublished letters, fieldnotes, and photographic collections of the theory's early proponents. Using contemporary fieldwork and case studies, the volume shows how the ideas of these ethnographers continue to impact and shape identities in various regional theatres from Ukraine to the Russian North to the Manchurian steppes of what is now China. Er wird nicht nur rege gelesen und zitiert, mittlerweile schließen auch unzählige Forschungen an seine Schriften an und auch in der Lehre besitzt er bereits einen festen Platz in vielen Grundkursen und Überblicksvorlesungen. Weil zugleich aber kaum zu übersehen ist, dass die Vorbehalte gegenüber Latour immer noch groß sind, zielt die vorliegende Einführung darauf, zunächst die zentralen Motive und Konzepte dieses auf den ersten Blick immens heterogenen Werkes zu erschließen. Sie möchte den Weg in ein Denken bahnen, das dem eigenen Anspruch nach eine grundsätzliche Alternative zu eingespielten Ansätzen der Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften formuliert. Vor diesem Hintergrund muss man sich Latour - so die These des Buches - als einen überaus systematischen und kohärenten Denker vorstellen. Um dies aufzuzeigen, folgt die Einführung dem Werdegang seines Werkes und versucht die Kernannahmen herauszuarbeiten, die im Anschluss an die noch kaum erschlossenen Schriften aus der Dissertationszeit in den Wissenschafts- und Technikstudien sichtbar werden und die schließlich zur Entwicklung der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie und zahlreichen allgemeinen philosophischen und soziologischen Beiträgen führen.     Abstract: This book discusses the interconnected, complex and emerging risks in today’s societies and deliberates on the various aspects of disaster risk reduction strategies especially through community resilience and responses.     Abstract: This book presents a range of academic research and personal reflections on the Gorkha earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015. For the first time, perspectives from geography, disaster risk reduction, cultural heritage protection, archaeology, anthropology, social work, health and emergency response are discussed in a single volume. Contributions are included from practitioners and researchers from Nepal and Durham University in the UK, many of whom were in Nepal at the time of the earthquake.     Abstract: This book recounts an ethnographic study of a mixed-occupancy housing estate near the centre of London, refocusing the scholarly conversation around social housing in the U.K. after the 1980 Housing Act. Rather than examining the long-term consequences of ‘Right to Buy,’ such as shortages in local authority stock and neighbourhood gentrification, James Rosbrook-Thompson and Gary Armstrong instead investigate the changes wrought on the social fabric of the individual estate. Drawing on four years of ethnographic fieldwork, the authors explore the estate’s social mix and, more specifically, the consequences of owner-occupiers, council tenants and private renters sharing a cramped inner-city neighbourhood.     Abstract: Die Wertetheorie von Shalom Schwartz geht davon aus, dass Werte den Menschen zwar unterschiedlich wichtig sein können, dass Individuen unter den Schwartz-Werten aber immer das gleiche verstehen (Bedeutungsäquivalenz). Nicolas Frenzel Baudisch geht mit Daten des European Social Survey der Frage nach, ob sich Individuen finden lassen, deren Wertevorstellungen von den Schwartz-Werten abweichen (widersprüchliche Wertevorstellungen). Dabei lässt sich belegen, dass sich solche Individuen finden lassen und dass dies dazu führen kann, dass die Messung dieser Werte weniger gelungen ist (verringerte Konstruktvalidität).     Abstract: This book is a sociological account of the historical trajectory of feed-in tariffs (FITs) as an instrument for the promotion of renewable energy in Europe. Chapters analyse the emergence and transformations of feed-in tariffs as part of the policy arsenal developed to encourage the creation of markets for RES-E in Europe. The authors explore evolving conceptions of renewable energy policy at the intersection between environmental objectives, technological change and the ambition to liberalise the internal electricity market. They draw conclusions on the relationships between markets and policy-making as it is instituted in the European Union, and on the interplay between the implementation of a European vision on energy and national politics. Distinctive in both its approach and its methods the books aim is not to discuss the design of feed-in tariffs and their evolution, nor is it to assess their efficiency or fairness.     Abstract: Zur sozialen Ungleichheit des Musikhörens -- Neue Rahmenbedingungen im Web 2.0 -- Aktuelle empirische Befunde zum Musikhören in Österreich -- Wozu Musik? Zentrale Tendenzen und mögliche Konsequenzen.
    Abstract: In Anschluss an aktuelle Erkenntnisse soziologischer und sozialpsychologischer Musikrezeptionsforschung erläutert der Band, welche gesellschaftlichen Funktionen das Musikhören heute erfüllt, und welche Rolle hier die neuen Rahmenbedingungen im Web 2.0 spielen. Auf Basis repräsentativer empirischer Erhebungen werden musikalische Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen illustriert sowie klar abgrenzbare Musikhörtypen charakterisiert, die in je besonderer Weise mit den aktuellen Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen der digitalen Mediamorphose umgehen. Besondere Berücksichtigung findet dabei die Frage nach der Bedeutung primärer Sozialisation als Gegengewicht zur musikalischen Selbstsozialisation im Internet. Vor allem Alter, Schulbildung und Wohnortsgröße der Menschen zeigen sich als entscheidende Einflussgrößen der individuellen musikalischen Praxis in Österreich.     Abstract: Das Ziel dieser Studie ist es, ein umfassendes Bild über die Lebensumstände in einer kleinen dörflichen Gemeinde am Rande der Stadt – und damit eben ein für viele Menschen sehr typischen Wohnsituation – zu geben. Modernisierung, Industrialisierung, Rationalisierung und Urbanisierung waren und sind die großen Schlagworte der Soziologie. Die Kontrastfolie dieser Prozesse bleibt seltsam unterbelichtet: das Leben und die sozialen Strukturen auf dem Dorf. Genau dies ist der Gegenstand der vorliegenden Studie. Hierzu wurde das Leben im Dorf auf unterschiedlichste Weise untersucht. Auf der einen Seite steht die Befragung der Bewohner zu ihrer Wohnsituation und zur Nachbarschaft, zur Familie, zu Dorfgemeinschaft und Vereinen und dem ehrenamtlichen Engagement, zur Situation der Jugend, zu Gesundheit und Pflege, aber auch zu Werten, Glauben und Religion. Auf der anderen Seite finden sich vielfältige Beobachtungen, Einzelgespräche, Leitfadeninterviews, Dokumentenanalysen oder Gruppengespräche, die auch die Geschichte des Dorfes und vor allem die Geschichte der einst großen jüdischen Gemeinde beleuchten.     Abstract: Der Band widmet sich einer aktuellen Bestandsaufnahme und Reflexion der Situation ostdeutscher Großwohnsiedlungen. Er zeigt, dass deren Entwicklungstrends kaum verallgemeinert werden können. Vielmehr sind ihre Anpassungsfähigkeit und damit „Haltbarkeit“ zu betonen. Das Ziel bestand darin, die Aufmerksamkeit sowohl der akademischen Debatte als auch der praktischen Wohnungswirtschaft und Wohnungspolitik auf die mittel- bis langfristigen Perspektiven zu verstärken. Der Band will ein grundsätzliches Verständnis für die differenzierten Typen von Großwohnsiedlungen schaffen und Handlungsoptionen jenseits der aktuellen Programmatik der Städtebauförderung ausloten. Ausgangspunkt ist die derzeitige Veränderung der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung: Nach einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung um Konzepte des Abrisses und Rückbaus sowie punktueller Aufwertung in den Jahren des Stadtumbaus ist es um die Großwohnsiedlungen inzwischen ruhiger geworden. Die Gründe hierfür sind vielfältig – sie mögen im Stabilisierungserfolg einiger größerer ostdeutscher Städte, insbesondere Universitätsstädte, liegen. Diese sind mittlerweile durch Einwohnerwachstum und Knappheit an bezahlbarem Wohnraum gekennzeichnet. Hier erscheinen die Großwohnsiedlungen nicht mehr existenziell bedroht. Eine andere Sachlage ist in kleineren Städten zu beobachten, wo die Wohnungsbestände in den randstädtischen Siedlungen weiterhin von Leerstand geprägt sind und der Wohnungsabriss fortgesetzt wird. Dennoch: Ostdeutsche Großwohnsiedlungen bleiben weiterhin interessante Orte differenzierter sozialräumlicher und demographischer Entwicklung. Ihre Bedeutung wird voraussichtlich wieder zunehmen, da die Herausforderungen im Zuge knappen, preiswerten Wohnraums, innerstädtischer Verdrängung und gestiegener Zuwanderung anwachsen werden. Dadurch gewinnen bekannte Fragen des Zusammenlebens und Interagierens im Wohnumfeld, der Inanspruchnahme von sozialer und technischer Infrastruktur und der Einbettung der Großwohnsiedlungen in gesamtstädtische Entwicklungsziele erneut an Aufmerksamkeit. Diese Themen werden am Beispiel einer Reihe von Großwohnsiedlungen eingehend beleuchtet. Um die geographische Dimension zu weiten, sind zwei Beiträge zu Perspektiven tschechischer und polnischer Großwohnsiedlungen im Band enthalten. Die Herausgeber Dr. Uwe Altrock ist Professor für Stadterneuerung und Stadtumbau an der Universität Kassel. Dr. Nico Grunze arbeitet freiberuflich im Bereich Stadtentwicklung. Dr. Sigrun Kabisch ist Professorin am Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung – UFZ in Leipzig.

    Abstract: Seit ihrer „Erfindung“ Ende der 1970er Jahre wurden viele Hundert Projekte mit dem gesellschaftswissenschaftlichen Zielgruppenmodell der Sinus-Milieus durchgeführt, meist empirische Forschungsprojekte und meist unveröffentlichte Auftragsarbeiten. Aber es gibt auch zahlreiche publizierte Studien mit und zu den Sinus-Milieus – zu den unterschiedlichsten Themen. Was es bis dato nicht gibt, ist ein Grundlagenwerk, d.h. eine autoritative Darstellung des Milieuansatzes von SINUS und dessen Anwendungsmöglichkeiten, also eine – möglichst breit zugängliche – Veröffentlichung, die die Gültigkeit der Sinus-Milieus im Kontext der soziokulturellen Dynamik begründet, ihre Aktualität in Zeiten von Digitalisierung und Globalisierung untermauert und ihren Nutzwert für Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft wie für den institutionellen Bereich deutlich macht. Das vorliegende Buch liefert Informationen über die Sinus-Milieus „direkt von der Quelle“, aus Sicht der Erfinder, Entwickler und Anwender des Ansatzes. Geschrieben haben die hier zusammengestellten Essays die wissenschaftlichen Beiräte, Gesellschafter, Mitarbeiter, Kunden und Partner der für die Sinus-Milieus verantwortlich zeichnenden Schwesterinstitute SINUS (Heidelberg/Berlin/Singapur) und INTEGRAL (Wien).     Abstract: Rita Lauter untersucht, wie gut es Fernsehnachrichten gelingt, jungen Zuschauern komplexe Themen zu vermitteln. Dafür wurde in Kooperation mit der WDR-Medienforschung in einer Rezeptionsstudie die Verständlichkeit von Beiträgen über komplexe Themen an 400 Probanden getestet. Dabei zeigte sich, dass unter anderem Visualisierung, Fokus und zu einem gewissen Grad auch Infotainment Schwierigkeiten auf Rezipientenseite ausgleichen können. Die Autorin leitet daraus praktische Empfehlungen für den Redaktionsalltag ab. Zusätzlich gewährt das Buch exklusive Einblicke in die Arbeit der drei erfolgreichsten deutschen TV-Nachrichtenredaktionen Tagesschau, heute und RTL-aktuell.
