    Abstract: African American voters are a key demographic to the modern Democratic base, and conventional wisdom has it that there is political cost to racialized 'dog whistles,' especially for Democratic candidates. However, politicians from both parties and from all racial backgrounds continually appeal to negative racial attitudes for political gain. Challenging what we think we know about race and politics, LaFleur Stephens-Dougan argues that candidates across the racial and political spectrum engage in 'racial distancing,' or using negative racial appeals to communicate to racially moderate and conservative whites - the overwhelming majority of whites - that they will not disrupt the racial status quo.

    Abstract: While the Civil Rights Movement brought increasing opportunities for blacks, this period also saw the liberalization of American immigration policy. The same agitation that allowed blacks to vote also made it possible for increasing numbers of non-European immigrants to enter America for the first time. What has an expanded immigration regime meant for how blacks express national attachment?     Abstract: Recent years have brought public mourning to the heart of American politics, as exemplified by the spread and power of the Black Lives Matter movement, which has gained force through its identification of pervasive social injustices with individual losses. The deaths of Sandra Bland, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Walter Scott, and so many others have brought private grief into the public sphere. The rhetoric and iconography of mourning has been noteworthy in Black Lives Matter protests, but David W. McIvor believes that we have paid too little attention to the nature of social mourning - its relationship to private grief, its practices, and its pathologies and democratic possibilities. Here, he addresses significant and urgent questions about how citizens can mourn traumatic events and enduring injustices in their communities.

    Abstract: 'An Impossible Dream?' builds a bridge between seemingly opposing stances on racial integration: integration as an essential component of racial justice, and integration as unwise and potentially harmful. By bringing together political theory, constitutional law, and critical race theory, Stanley shows that much of this apparent disagreement stems from different understandings of the very meaning of integration. Stanley argues that true integration includes both internal psychic conversion and redistribution of power, and places a large responsibility on white America to demonstrate its willingness and capacity to make sacrifices and to confront its own privilege.

    Abstract: The South's system of Jim Crow racial oppression is usually understood in terms of legal segregation that mandated the separation of white and black Americans. Yet, as this work shows, it was also a high-stakes drama that played out in the routines of everyday life, where blacks and whites regularly interacted on sidewalks and buses and in businesses and homes. Every day, individuals made, unmade, and remade Jim Crow in how they played their racial roles-how they moved, talked, even gestured. The highly visible but often subtle nature of these interactions constituted the Jim Crow routine.
