Kurzfassung: Publisher description: Manifesting Power confronts the relationship between gender and power within prehistoric and historic societies. It addresses the extent to which our reconceptions of the nature of power, and of relations between the sexes, are rooted in our own experience of western society, and argues that both conditions and perceptions may have been quite different among peoples of the past. This collection includes nine innovative chapters which draw on data from a range of periods and areas. By looking at the evidence for gender distinctions both from archaeological sites and from ethnographic observation, the contributors explore what these distinctions can reveal about power relationships in general. They argue that the evidence often does not point to the existence of hierarchical gender relationships, and explore the forms of power available to women among the Maya and Aztec, and in prehistoric Denmark, Alaska, and the southeastern United States

Kurzfassung: "Gender, Planning and Human Rights explores the geographies and spatialities of human rights with particular emphasis on the connections between gender and human rights in planning and development. Challenging the traditional treatment of human rights cast in purely legal frameworks, the authors argue that, in order to promote the notion of human rights, its geographies and spatialities must be investigated and be made explicit. The book contains a wealth of case studies which examine the significance of these components in various countries with multicultured societies and identify ways to integrate human rights issues in planning, development and policy-making."--Jacket

Kurzfassung: "In the opening chapters of her book, Assiter provides a lucid exposition of contemporary postmodern feminism. She analyses the writings of some of its most influential theorists, and places them in the wider context of postmodern and post-structuralist theory as developed, for example, by Lyotard and Derrida. Assiter then develops a citique of the antirealist stance that unites postmodern thinkers and makes a powerful argument for epistemological realism." "In later chapters, Assiter goes on to outline a 'modernist' feminist epistemology based on communities rather than the individual; she asserts that a version of the humanist subject based on bodily identity can be defended against postmodernist deconstructions; and she demonstrates that we can indeed make claims about women that are universally true. Enlightened Women argues for retaining the distinction between sex and gender and concludes with an alternative reading of the theory of sexuality." "Enlightened Women provides a clear and concise overview of postmodernism and French feminist thought; at the same time it argues, against received opinion, for a partial return to modernist values."--Jacket

Kurzfassung: "The rainforest has become increasingly topical in today's eco-conscious society, yet people remain ignorant of the many issues concealed by the language and methods of international development policy. Women's Voices from the Rainforest analyses the causes and effects of such policy." "Concentrating on the women pioneers of poorer countries, the book employs a variety of contrasting methodologies, from life histories to questionnaire surveys, to suggest a range of answers to this increasing global concern." "In the first study of its kind to focus on the women in the families which are cutting down the rainforest of Latin America, the authors argue for appropriate planning which responds to local cultures, not to Western ideologies, and to which women and men contribute at all levels." "Women's Voices from the Rainforest is an analysis not only of the many costly eco-failures when 'new' lands are settled in poorer countries today, but also a discussion of the role feminist theory has to play in finding solutions to such problems."--Jacket

Kurzfassung: Out of the Margin is the first volume to consider feminist concerns across the entire domain of economics. The book addresses the philosophical roots of 'rational economic man', power relations and conflicts of interest within the family, the limitations of relying on secondary data and the policy implications of neo-classical models. With its range and depth of coverage this is not only an excellent introduction to the field but also indespensible for those seeking more in depth knowledge of issues of gender and economics

Kurzfassung: What does the politics of the self mean for a politics of liberation? Morwenna Griffiths argues that mainstream philosophy, particularly the anglo-analytic tradition, needs to tackle the issues of the self, identity, autonomy and self creation. Although identity has been a central concern of feminist thought it has in the main been excluded from philosophical analysis. Feminisms and the Self is both a critique and a construction of feminist philosophy. After the powerful challenges that postmodernism and poststructuralism posed to liberation movements like feminism, Griffiths book
