    Kurzfassung: Ralph Ellison famously characterized ensemble jazz improvisation as "antagonistic cooperation." Both collaborative and competitive, musicians play with and against one another to create art and community. In Antagonistic Cooperation, Robert G. O'Meally shows how this idea runs throughout twentieth-century African American culture to provide a new history of Black creativity and aesthetics.From the collages of Romare Bearden and paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat to the fiction of Ralph Ellison and Toni Morrison to the music of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, O'Meally explores how the worlds of African American jazz, art, and literature have informed one another. He argues that these artists drew on the improvisatory nature of jazz and the techniques of collage not as a way to depict a fractured or broken sense of Blackness but rather to see the Black self as beautifully layered and complex. They developed a shared set of methods and motives driven by the belief that art must involve a sense of community. O'Meally's readings of these artists and their work emphasize how they have not only contributed to understanding of Black history and culture but also provided hope for fulfilling the broken promises of American democracy.

    Kurzfassung: After Hollywood and Tin Pan Alley's iron grip on the movie musical began to slip in the face of pop's cultural dominance, many believed that the musical genre entered a terminal decline and finally wore itself out by the 1980s. Though the industrial model of the musical was disrupted by the emergence of pop, the Hollywood musical has not gone extinct. Many Hollywood productions from the 1960s to the present have revisited the forms and conventions of the classic musical-except instead of drawing from showtunes and jazz standards, they employ the styles and iconography of pop.Alberto Mira offers a new account of how pop music revolutionized the Hollywood musical. He shows that while the Hollywood system ceased producing large-scale traditional musicals, different pop strains-disco, rock 'n' roll, doo-wop, glam, and hip-hop-renewed the genre, giving it a new life. While the classical musical presented a world light on conflict, defined by theatricality and where effortless talent can shine through, the introduction of pop spurred musicals to address contemporary social and political conditions. Mira traces the emergence of a new set of themes-such as the painful hard work depicted in Dirty Dancing (1987); the double-edged fandom of Velvet Goldmine (1998); and the racial politics of Dreamgirls (2006)-to explore why the Hollywood musical has found renewed relevance.

Iran's particular system of traditional Persian art music has been long treated as the product of an ever-evolving, ancient Persian culture. In Music of a Thousand Years, Ann E. Lucas argues that this music is a modern phenomenon indelibly tied to changing notions of Iran's national history. Rather than considering a single Persian music history, Lucas demonstrates cultural dissimilarity and discontinuity over time, bringing to light two different notions of music-making in relation to premodern and modern musical norms. An important corrective to the history of Persian music, Music of a Thousand Years is the first work to align understandings of Middle Eastern music history with current understandings of the region's political history.

    Kurzfassung: In the early years of the Cold War, Western nations increasingly adopted strategies of public diplomacy involving popular music. While the diplomatic use of popular music was initially limited to such genres as jazz, the second half of the 20th century saw a growing presence of various popular genres in diplomatic contexts, including rock, punk, reggae, and hip-hop.This volume illuminates the interrelation of popular music and public diplomacy from a transnational and transdisciplinary angle. The contributions argue that, as popular music has been a crucial factor in international relations, its diplomatic use has substantially impacted the global musical landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Wolf-Georg Zaddach rückt eine in der Forschung lange Zeit vernachlässigte Jugendkultur in den Fokus und erläutert - erstmalig in diesem Umfang - die alltäglichen Praktiken und Entwicklungen der Heavy Metal-Szene im DDR-Sozialismus der 1980er-Jahre. Die empirische Grundlage hierfür bieten bisher unveröffentlichte Quellen wie Songtexte auf Karteikarten, Fan-Briefe und Akten der »Stasi« (Ministerium für Staatssicherheit). Es kommen aber auch zahlreiche Zeitzeugen wie die Macher der Kultradiosendung »Tendenz Hard bis Heavy« sowie diverse Fans und Musiker zu Wort.

    Kurzfassung: Religion findet sich nicht nur in Kirchen und Moscheen, sondern auch an profanen Orten wie Heavy Metal-Konzerten. Mittels der Analyse von Konzerten, Liedtexten, CD-Covern und Interviews mit bekannten Musikern im Bereich des Pagan Metal diskutiert Serina Heinen das Verhältnis von Religion und Populärkultur.Dabei tritt ein wichtiger Aspekt von moderner Religion zutage, der in religionssoziologischen Debatten kaum Beachtung findet: Religion im populärkulturellen Kontext ist vieldeutig. Pagan Metal ist voller explizit religionsbezogener Symbolik, doch verstehen die Musiker ihre künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit Religion nicht zwingend als religiöses Bekenntnis.
    Kurzfassung: Religion is found not only in churches and mosques, but also in profane environments - even at heavy metal concerts. Through an analysis of concerts, lyrics, CD covers and interviews with famous musicians in the 'pagan metal' scene, Serina Heinen discusses the relationship between religion and popular culture. In the process, an important aspect of religion is brought to light that in the socio-religious debate on secularization and the return of religion is given hardly any attention: in a contemporary society strongly shaped by popular culture, religion does not necessarily have a religious connotation. The religious references in pagan metal are primarily used for stylistic purposes - and not as religious proclamations.

    Kurzfassung: Forschung auf dem Gebiet »Hip-Hop und Religion« hat sich bisher meist auf religiöse Lesarten von Raptexten konzentriert und zudem Musikvideos bei dieser Betrachtung weitestgehend außer Acht gelassen. Eileen Simonow geht der These nach, dass religiöses Material in den Clips sakral und damit entgrenzend, in Bedeutungen überschießend - und damit im eigentlichen Sinne anti-religiös inszeniert - ist. Dafür werden Musikvideos des US-amerikanischen Mainstreams in ihrer komplexen Verschränkung der auditiven und visuellen Ebenen mit der Sakraltheorie Georges Batailles gelesen. In vier Analysen von Musikvideos - u.a. von Kanye West - wird das Sakrale als aus dem Sozialen hervorgehende Kraft im Spannungsfeld von Macht, Ideologie und Widerstand diskutiert.

    Kurzfassung: Ob Soul in Deutschland, progressive Landdiskotheken in der Provinz oder neue Mixingkonzepte im Loudness War - das Spektrum der Aneignungsformen populärer Musik ist vielfältig. Für die musikwissenschaftliche, kulturwissenschaftliche und musikpädagogische Forschung ist das Thema, das sich weitgehend außerhalb formaler Bildungskontexte abspielt, ein bislang unerschlossenes Gebiet. Der Band ändert dies. Er versammelt theoretische Perspektiven sowie historische und aktuelle Fallbeispiele und spiegelt den aktuellen internationalen Diskussionsstand wider. Daraus ergeben sich maßgebende Impulse für weiterführende Forschungsaktivitäten auch in verwandten Fachdisziplinen.

Yet research into the music of Austronesia has hitherto been sparse. Drawing together contemporary cultural studies and musical analysis, Austronesian Soundscapes will fill this research gap, offering a comprehensive analysis of traditional and contemporary Austronesian music and, at the same time, investigating how music reflects the challenges that Austronesian cultures face in this age of globalization.
