Kurzfassung: Few developing countries have succeeded in simultaneously providing good jobs and access to social services for all. Large informal sectors and segmented social policies that provide benefits to only a small minority are among the problems that have hampered developing countries' ability to secure the double incorporation to the market and to social services. This book reviews Costa Rica's experience as one of the few successful exceptions. The authors concentrate on the essential role of the state in expanding public employment, promoting small firms and cooperatives and creating generous and

Schlagwort(e): Ethnology Latin America ; Economic theory ; International economics ; Labor economics ; Regional economics ; Spatial economics ; Urban economics
Kurzfassung: Social protection systems in Latin America developed in a fragmented manner, offering varying access to benefits and benefit levels to population groups. In the context of widespread informal and precarious work, social insurance institutions could only provide limited coverage. In this context, progress toward a Citizen's Income policy in Latin America depends on the possibility of reappraising its importance for an integrated institutional system which promotes the empowerment and economic independence of people. A Citizen's Income policy is not only a cash transfer to alleviate poverty or a basic income for food. It is a basic right to improve democracy and encourage a more autonomous development of people living in profoundly unequal societies
Kurzfassung: This book describes the Basic Income proposal as a model to reform policies of income transfers in Latin America. A study that covers many topics and many countries, looking back at both the genesis and support of current focalized and conditional programs and forward to see how and whether the BI proposal can be adapted for use in the region

The GCC countries have the highest share of foreign labor in the world. We would like to examine the multidimensional aspects of such a large foreign population. We first look at the reasons behind its existence and then discuss its implications on the local and regional economies largely concentrating on the monetary outflows from the GCC countries. A large number of foreign workers first impose serious competition for the local workforce but also s
