    Kurzfassung: By describing their present as ‘enlightened’, eighteenth-century intellectuals inevitably altered their relationship to the past. In search of an explanation for this Enlightenment, eighteenth-century authors created a historical narrative which connected European countries in a linear history from antiquity, through the barbarous Middle Ages, to the progress of the scientific revolution and, finally, to the enlightened present in which seventeenth-century knowledge was perceived as increasingly benefiting society as a whole. Even though this narrative served as a shared European history and identity, national varieties soon emerged. This book shows that, in the context of the European ‘Enlightened narrative’, the Dutch Republic formed an extraordinary case. Here, the narrative of progress collided with a simultaneous debate on national decline and a deeply rooted humanistic tradition. Dutch intellectuals, moreover, were forced to reconsider their national past and national identity. The Batavian myth, for two centuries the primary historical foundation of national identity, increasingly came to be viewed as ‘barbaric’. Consequently, the concept of a seventeenth-century Golden Age was invented. It replaced the Batavian myth with a celebration of seventeenth-century Dutch economic prosperity, commercial politeness and moral rectitude more in line with enlightened historical thought

Het besef onderdeel te zijn van een ontwikkelde, beschaafde en commerciële periode schiep een nieuwe verhouding tot het verleden. Veel geschiedschrijvers schreven een historisch verhaal van vooruitgang - van de klassieke oudheid via de barbaarse middeleeuwen naar het moderne Europese statensysteem - om deze verlichte eeuw te verklaren. Black and white characterisations, one-sided interpretations and prevailing myths are debunked. Instead, a nuanced and multifaceted picture is given in which the United States is less prominent. History is not only written by the victors and, in this case too, the history of Vietnam during this period cannot be attributed solely to Ho Chi Minh and the success of the Communists in 1975. The internal losers, that is, the other political movements and their leaders, must also be given a crucial place in Vietnam's history. For example, the civil wars that took place between 1940 and 1990 played an unmistakable role. The older, idealised image of North Vietnam is inaccurate. This country was a dictatorial and oppressive police state. After 1954, the North Vietnamese leaders were embroiled in a fierce power struggle and were largely responsible for the war in South Vietnam. The answer to the question of who the legitimate representatives of the Vietnamese nation were also requires a more balanced judgment of non-Communist politicians, such as Bao Dai, Ngo Dinh Diem and Nguyen Van Thieu. As for the role of international players, initially, it was the Cold War that determined the United States' interference; later, it was American credibility. In the end, it was the support from China and the Soviet Union that was the deciding factor for North Vietnam's victory. Important new perspectives are given on the role of minorities, the meaning of 'a third way', the devastating effects of the strategy, the role of women and girls, and the mental and cultural aspects of the wars

    Kurzfassung: Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog probeerde de Duitse bezetter België intern te splijten. Dat gebeurde door het voeren van een Flamenpolitik, een beleid dat erop gericht was de Vlamingen of in elk geval de Vlaamse beweging in het harnas te jagen tegen België. Dat lukte, want een klein deel Vlaamsgezinden, de zogenaamde activisten, collaboreerde inderdaad. Vanaf de zomer van 1914 zou Berlijn in het bezette land op de Vlaamse beweging inbeuken door een grootscheepse propagandacampagne. De Duitse diensten, gesteund door hun Oostenrijkse bondgenoten, maakten daarbij vooral gebruik van vlugschriften en de geschreven pers, niet alleen in België maar ook in het neutrale Nederland. In de zomer van 1915 was het activisme een feit: een anti-Belgisch Vlaams-nationalisme, waarvan de gevolgen tot op heden voelbaar zijn, had het daglicht gezien. De propaganda die eraan ten grondslag lag was zó vernuftig en ingenieus dat ze niet alleen tijdgenoten overtuigde, maar zelfs meer dan een eeuw later nog steeds historici misleidt. Het is een mooi staaltje van "fake news" avant la lettre

De auteur baseert zich op gepubliceerd en ongepubliceerd bronnenmateriaal en op talloze interviews met rechtstreeks betrokkenen.0In de proloog wordt meteen duidelijk hoe heilsverwachtingen het wereldbeeld van de Papoea's beheersen. Nieuwkomers die opdoken vanaf de 17de eeuw werden door hen dan ook welwillend tegemoet getreden. Slavernij en uitbuiting door Molukse vorsten was vervolgens hun deel.0De Nederlanders eisten het immense gebied op, maar hadden er nauwelijks oog voor totdat het aan het einde van de 19de eeuw tot hen doordrong dat ze het konden verliezen als ze het niet daadwerkelijk onder bestuur brachten. Nieuw-Guinea bleef het 'stiefkind van Indië' tot aan de vooravond van de Tweede Wereldoorlog.0Na de oorlog nam Nederland de verplichting op zich westelijk Nieuw-Guinea als goede kolonisator te beheren en de Papoea's te leiden op de weg van ontwikkeling en uiteindelijk naar onafhankelijkheid.     Kurzfassung: The study scrutinizes the effects of language awareness on teachers’ conceptualization of language variation. Teacher language awareness has been discussed mostly for the case of English and with regard to grammar, and is defined as being determined by knowledge and reflexion (Andrews 2008, Svalberg 2012). This study aims at examining the reach of the concept for other languages, here Dutch, and for other terrains, in this case, language variation, thus stretching the application also into the realm of language ideology. According to Kroskrity (2006, 2016), language ideologies are (1) not knowledge but ‘‘notions’, ‘beliefs’ or ‘ideas’, which (2) are about language, the role(s) of language and its nature, and which (3) are constructed by individuals and groups in interaction with each other to (4) rationalize and justify social relations. In this linguistic-ethnographic study, a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with teachers of Dutch at eight European universities shows that knowledge and reflection play a considerable role for how teachers conceptualize language variation in class. Overall, four different types of teacher language awareness came to the fore, based on different interplays of both knowledge and reflection: standard language ideology alive, strong focus on prescription, doubting and linguistic insecurity and dynamic equilibrium. The overall results show the importance of teacher language awareness in language classes and help to boil down the vague notion of language awareness on language variation to two major defining factors, namely knowledge and reflection. Further, the study shows that language classrooms may be seen as ‘ideological sites’ (Silverstein (1979, 1998)), in which language ideology may be either reproduced or deconstructed, depending on the language awareness of the teacher. The consequences of the study for language teacher education are a plea for an informed, reflected, differentiated and integrative treatment of language variation in language class
    Kurzfassung: Taalvariatie stelt docenten voor een bijzondere uitdaging: de vraag naar wat (nog net) kan en naar wat fout is. Die vraag is vaak niet zo makkelijk te beantwoorden. Hoe taaldocenten omgaan met taalvariatie, staat in deze sociolinguïstische studie centraal. Met een etnografische methode slaagt Truus De Wilde erin te achterhalen hoe docenten reageren op taalvariatie en analyseert ze achterliggende motieven. Taalideologieën over wat een standaardtaal is en zou moeten zijn, liggen aan de basis van deze analyse. Op basis van deze ideologieën worden vier archetypes geconstrueerd. De vele citaten uit interviews illustreren de archetypes en wijzen op de centrale rol van taalbewustzijn

    Kurzfassung: Urbanity and migration are considered to be two basic components in definitions of modernity. They force us to reflect on how the boundaries between the local and the global are determined and surpassed. Often this results in politically charged discussions about transnationality and national identity, monolingualism and multilingualism, inclusion and exclusion. The contributions to this issue of CLW demonstrate that literature can play a significant role in this debate. The authors highlight the representation of city and migration in a wide variety of novels published in Dutch, English, German, Spanish and French with a particular interest in political commitment

    Kurzfassung: Het boek A Dutch Miracle van J. Visser en A. Hemerijck uit 1997 analyseerde de rol van onderhandelingen, coördinatie en consensus in het Nederlandse Poldermodel en stelde vast dat het cruciale factoren zijn geweest in het overkomen van de hoge werkloosheid van begin jaren '80 en de goede performance van de Nederlandse arbeidsmarkt in de jaren '90.Nu, bijna 20 jaar later, worden er steeds meer vragen gesteld bij zowel de legitimiteit als de functionaliteit van het Poldermodel. De representativiteit van de vakbonden is dalende en jongeren en het midden- en kleinbedrijf zien zich vaak niet vertegenwoordigd in de Polder die volgens critici op ondemocratische wijze deelbelangen in plaats van het algemeen belang vertegenwoordigt en noodzakelijke hervormingen op sociaaleconomisch gebied in de weg staat. Door differentiatie van belangen tussen sectoren of hoog en laag opgeleiden wordt het voor de sociale partners ook steeds moeilijker om met één stem te spreken en centrale afspraken te maken uit naam van alle betrokkenen. Ook is het voor de sociale partners moeilijker geworden afspraken te maken over sociale zekerheid en vervolgens een rol te spelen in de implementatie van deze afspraken, aangezien hun rol in de uitvoering van de sociale zekerheid is verminderd. Coördinatie van het algemene sociale zekerheidsbeleid en de afstemming met cao's en het arbeidsvoorwaardenbeleid zijn dus moeilijker zijn geworden. Het maken van centrale afspraken wordt verder beperkt door het groeiende belang van Europees beleid en afspraken in Euroverband met betrekking tot overheidsuitgaven, en door voortschrijdende globalisering en finacialisation. Deze ontwikkelingen en kritieken leiden dus tot serieuze vragen over de legitimiteit en functionaliteit het Poldermodel. In dit boek worden de hedendaagse legitimiteit en functionaliteit van het model vanuit verschillende hoeken en disciplines geanalyseerd om zo een beeld te vormen van het Poldermodel anno nu en van de mogelijke rol van het Poldermodel in de toekomst. De lessen van de verschillende hoofdstukken worden in de inleiding bij elkaar gebracht

The case of Beatrijs brought about new theoretical discussions, cooperation and exchange in the field of Dutch Studies, as is demonstrated by this volume. By means of diverse approaches the authors show how a literary text from the relatively small geographical area of the Dutch language can circulate both inside and outside its linguistic borders in different periods. With their wide spectrum of research questions, methodological approaches and selections of material, the contributions are a reflection of the richness of international Dutch Studies in the 21st century. Inspired by translation, adaptation and reception studies, this volume helps us to answer the question which characteristics of a particular text make it a likely candidate for crossing linguistic, geophysical, historical, and other borders. This volume is a contribution to the historiography of the export and dissemination of Dutch literature

    Kurzfassung: Sexual health in Flanders describes the results of the first representative population-based study on this topic in Flanders (the Northern, Dutch-speaking part of Belgium). A research team of psychologists, sexologists, sociologists and medical doctors, affiliated with Ghent University, KU Leuven and Ghent University Hospital collaborated on this research project that aimed to explore various aspects of sexual behavior and sexual health in men and women living in Flanders. Apart from providing in reliable, valid, descriptive scientific data, this study offers important information on which a more targeted policy to promote sexual health can be developed.This reference work is based on a survey in which 1832 Flemish men and women – aged 14 to 80 years old – participated and that covered various aspects of sexual health. The focus is not only on sexual experiences and practices; attention is also paid to the relational and social context in which these experiences occur. In addition, a number of chapters elaborate on the sexual start (the first sexual experiences), reproductive health, sexual dysfunctions, cross-border sexual behavior, and profiles of sexual health.The detailed description of the methodology that was used, allows the reader to evaluate the accuracy of the many tables, figures and numbers that are presented. Due to the academic background of the contributing authors the emphasis is on Polish, Hungarian and Czech case studies, though the Balkans are also being dealt with – albeit less prominently. Whereas some contributions search for contacts, links and influences between literatures and literators, some other chapters set up textual encounters in which authors and their works are compared from a thematic, poetic, stylistic or generic angle. Apart from these comparative endeavors, another group of contributors offer reception analysis regarding the overall topic. In the last part of the volume the focus is on issues of (national) representation and the discursive strategies that are used for it

    Kurzfassung: De Nederlandse Opstand wordt gewoonlijk beschreven als een aaneenschakeling van politieke polarisering, religieuze radicalisering en militaire mobilisering. Toch vonden tot 1581 telkens opnieuw verzoeningspogingen plaats om deze escalatie te vermijden. Daarbij probeerden zowel edellieden als koninklijke en keizerlijke vertegenwoordigers het conflict op diplomatieke en verzoenende wijze te beslechten. Deze studie gaat over deze vredehandel. Welke verzoeningspogingen werden ondernomen? Waarom werden die telkens opnieuw ondernomen? En vooral, in welke mate konden deze toenaderingspogingen succes boeken? Op basis van archivalische en gedrukte bronnen brengt dit boek de redenen, modaliteiten en mogelijkheden van de vredesonderhandelingen tijdens de beginjaren van de Opstand in kaart. Vanuit de raak- en breekpunten tussen adellijke en Habsburgse verzoeningspogingen werpt dit boek een nieuw licht op de vraag waarom de onderhandelde hereniging met Filips II gedeeltelijk plaatsvond in 1579-1580 en zo een bijkomend motief creëerde voor het Plakkaat van Verlatinge in 1581

    Kurzfassung: To what extent is it possible for a literary text to contribute to the ethical development of its reader? This book tries to provide readers with a nuanced answer to this question, as well as with methodological premises to bring to light the ethical effects of a literary text. The novels of the Dutch author Frans Kellendonk (1951-1990) offer insightful contexts and questions related to this issue. Kellendonk is one of the most controversial Dutch writers of the end of the twentieth century. Today, he is mainly considered as a kind of prophet that advocated a certain scepticism towards a multicultural society. Kellendonk’s novels systematically put into question one-way interpretations of their works. They invite readers to find other interpretations, putting into question the simplifying conceptual framework that has shaped the author’s posture until now. They also lay the foundations for an ethics of reading that relies on the very diegetic world to which the reader can adjust his/her own reading. This ethics is more specifically an invitation to recognize the undecidability that every reading entails

    Kurzfassung: This third volume of Lage Landen Studies offers a glimpse of recent international and internationalizing trends in Dutch Studies. It presents a comparative view of the virtually synchronic dynamics of the translation, promotion and reception of contemporary Dutch author Arnon Grunberg in five Romance languages between 1996 and 2009.This interdisciplinary approach, which focuses on the crossroads of language, literature and culture, as well as on aspects of the sociologies of literature and translation, is combined with views from translation studies, comparative literature, and bibliology in order to build bridges between theory and practice.The first part is devoted to the seldom-heard perspective of the translator and dissects the circumstances in which works by Arnon Grunberg – and by his heteronym Marek van der Jagt – are translated, promoted and received in five Romance languages. The function and ‘visual translation’ of book covers are also analyzed. Notwithstanding the relative homogeneity of the languages, their cultural background and geographical location, remarkable differences come to light. The first part rounds off by looking at the promotional possibilities of writer’s tours and translation workshops in the target countries

It is connected to the meaning of house as a building, but even more so as an imaginative house or a home. On the other hand the house is a rich metaphorical concept that is often used for expressing poetical ideas. In a historical survey of modern Dutch-language poetry different images of the house are presented. The overview shows that the choice of certain metaphorical concepts is connected to literary and extra literary contexts, and to the poetical ideas of poets. Conceptual integration – blending theory – is used throughout this book as a theoretical frame. From this perspective poems are regarded as a complex blend, a network of connections which are constructed during the reading and interpreting processes. Finally, the book shows how metaphorical blends are integrated in concrete poems and which kind of house images result from this process

Door de eeuwen heen zijn er voortdurend gevallen van verboden boeken geweest. Dit is de eerste studie die deze ontwikkeling in Nederland over een langere periode bekijkt. Aan de hand van opvallende processen en verboden biedt dit boek een chronologisch overzicht van de stand van de censuur in brede zin: alles rond het tegenwerken of verbieden van openbaarmaking via druk, inclusief zelfcensuur ter bescherming van de eigen positie. De bijdragen tonen een overheid die dan weer onberekenbaar is, dan weer scherp, dan weer wankelmoedig. Deze onvoorspelbaarheid leidde ook tot eigen controlediensten bij de katholieken en een zelfstandig moralistisch aanschafbeleid van openbare bibliotheken

    Kurzfassung: A storm at sea, hanging cliffs, volcano eruptions at night, threatening thunderclouds over a desolate mountain landscape: all these phenomena incite both fear and pleasure, astonishment and fascination. We call them sublime, after the feeling of the sublime. In the eighteenth century the sublime became the exciting alternative to the beautiful. The concept has ancient roots, but branches out into French, British, German, and Dutch cultures. Stemming originally from rhetoric, in the course of the eighteenth century it became an aesthetic, philosophical and literary concept. In this study the history of the sublime is told for the first time in Dutch. This book focuses on Dutch contributions on the sublime, in the light of the international history of the concept of the sublime. From the earliest translations to the original ideas of Johannes Kinker and Willem Bilderdijk: the Dutch sublime reflects both the entwinement with the European Enlightenment and the specific nature of Dutch culture in the long eighteenth century

    Kurzfassung: Vieringen ter ere van het Huis van Bourgondië-Habsburg vormden in de vroegmoderne Vlaamse en Brabantse steden een belangrijke aanleiding voor de productie en opvoering van literaire teksten. Ze droegen daardoor in belangrijke mate bij aan de bijzondere ontwikkeling van het stedelijke literaire leven. Op hun beurt waren toneelstukken, gedichten en liederen bepalend voor het verloop, de werking en de betekenis van het stedelijke vorstenfeest. Deze publicatie onderzoekt voor het eerst de interactie tussen dergelijke vorstenfeesten en literatuur binnen een breed geografisch en tijdskader. Speciale aandacht gaat uit naar de kamers van retorica, die zich bezighielden met het schrijven en opvoeren van teksten en nauw betrokken waren bij het organiseren van vorstenfeesten. Hun stempel op deze vieringen blijkt groter en meer divers te zijn geweest dan tot op heden werd aangenomen. Voor vorst en stad beweegt zich op het snijvlak van politieke, literatuur- en cultuurgeschiedenis.     Kurzfassung: In een historisch onderzoek dat een herziening is van de koloniale geschiedschrijving, duikt prof. dr. Jan Breman in een van de zwartste bladzijdes van de Nederlandse geschiedenis. In Koloniaal profijt van onvrije arbeid: het Preanger stelsel van gedwongen koffieteelt op Java, dat meer dan dertig jaar onderzoek omspant, behandelt hij de werking en uitwerking van gedwongen koffieteelt onder de koloniale heerschappij, en de invloed op het maatschappelijk bestel in de hooglanden van West-Java. Hij laat zien hoe de VOC de inheemse landadel inschakelde als goedkope vorm van bestuur. Deze landadel hield de boerenbevolking door middel van uitbuiting en onderdrukking in het gareel. Het Preanger koffieregime werd vanaf 1830 voortgezet in de vorm van het cultuurstelsel. Dwang was inherent aan dit stelsel waarbij de boeren niet alleen verplicht waren om de voorgeschreven arbeidsprestatie te leveren, maar ook om de eenzijdig vastgestelde vergoeding voor de producten zonder protest te aanvaarden. Dat deze opzet succes behaalde beschrijft Multatuli in zijn Max Havelaar. Breman levert met deze studie de feitelijke onderbouwing van de aanklacht door Multatuli, anderhalve eeuw geleden. Hoe komt het dat de werking en uitwerking van het Preanger-stelsel van gedwongen koffieteelt zo lang buiten beeld is gebleven? Breman plaatst scherpe kanttekeningen bij de uitgesproken gunstige oordelen die worden geveld in de koloniale geschiedschrijving. De toon van zelfrechtvaardiging en stilzwijgen over het gebruik van dwangarbeid waarin de koloniale overheid uitblonk, is volgens Breman een opvallend element in de verdediging van de tot nu toe gevoerde politiek. Deze studie kan beschouwd worden als een herziening van de geschiedschrijving én als een sociaalwetenschappelijke verhandeling van Multatuli's werk

These selections are introduced and illuminated by Prof. dr. Willem Otterspeer who is also Huizinga's biographer. Johan Huizinga was born in Groningen, in 1872. He studied Dutch and Oriental language and literature at the University of Groningen (1891 - 1895) and comparative linguistic at the University of Leipzig (1895-1896). In 1915, he was appointed professor of general history at the Leiden University. His most famous works include The Autumn of the Middle Ages (1919), which dealt with life, ideas, art, and behaviors of the upper classes of Burgundy in the 14th and 15th centuries, Erasmus (1924), a biography of the famous Dutch Renaissance scholar, and Homo Ludens (1938), focusing on the element of play in human culture
    Kurzfassung: De hand van Huizinga bevat een nieuwe selectie van de belangrijkste essays uit het omvangrijke oeuvre van de wereldberoemde Nederlandse historicus Johan Huizinga. Deze essays en studies zijn geselecteerd op basis van de diverse disciplines waarmee Huizinga zich bezighield - van de Middeleeuwen tot de Renaissance en van de moderne tot de algemene culturele geschiedenis. Deze selectie wordt geïntroduceerd en toegelicht door Huizinga-biograaf Willem Otterspeer. Johan Huizinga werd in 1872 in Groningen geboren. Tot zijn bekendste werken behoren Herfsttij der Middeleeuwen (1919), Erasmus (1924) en Homo Ludens (1938). De hand van Huizinga wordt gepubliceerd als onderdeel van "http://www.oapen.org/"〉OAPEN.     Kurzfassung: In Politieke geschriften geeft publicist Dirck Volckertzoon Coornhert (1522-1590) op indringende wijze zijn visie op de politieke situatie in zijn tijd. De Opstand verkeert in een diepe crisis, de tegenstander is overmachtig en de opstandelingen zijn onderling verdeeld. Met pragmatische en politiekprincipiële argumenten verdedigt Coornhert in zijn brieven en traktaten de vrijheid van religie. En altijd klinkt daarin zijn diepste overtuiging door: geloof en dwang gaan niet samen. Dit is Coornhert op zijn scherpst: ontgoocheling en fel verzet. Dirk Volkertzoon Coornhert (1522-1590) was een vooraanstaand medestander van Willem van Oranje. Gedreven en veelzijdig publicist als hij was, heeft hij zich ingezet voor een zeer ruim opgevatte vrijheid van godsdienst. Zijn werk is een pleidooi voor verdraagzaamheid, geschreven met veel gevoel voor urgentie op een cruciaal moment van onze vaderlandse geschiedenis. In de Bibliotheca Dissidentium Neerlandicorum verschijnen publicaties op het gebied van de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse (religieuze, filosofische en artistieke) non-conformisme van circa 1350 tot onze tijd. Het boek gaat uitvoerig in op de vormgeving en de inhoud van de liedboeken, de verhouding tussen nieuw gecomponeerde en bestaande muziek, de invloed van uitgevers en drukkers, de connecties tussen de liedcultuur en het theater, de populariteit van amoureuze liedboeken bij de jeugd, en het verzet vanuit religieuze hoek tegen de meeslepende invloed van de muziek. Rederijkers (rhetoriziens) drukten de intellectuele en maatschappelijke missies van hun kamers uit in het kernbegrip retorica (rhetorique) dat zowel verwees naar (utopische) idealen van burgerlijkheid als naar het toepassen van kennis (conste) in een geëngageerde cultuur. De noordelijke Nederlanden (vooral Holland en Zeeland) vormden met de zuidelijke (vooral Vlaanderen en Brabant) één rederijkerswereld van overlappende netwerken waarin via een actieve lees-, gespreks- en discussiecultuur internationale culturele trends lokaal en regionaal verwerkt werden. De middelen van publieke welsprekendheid (het schrijven en opvoeren van toneelspel, lied, gedicht) waren (intern) bedoeld om (in een ludieke en competitieve sfeer) de geest van jonge mannen uit gegoede families en middengroepen te vormen. Door de organisatie (extern) van opvoering in de lokale feestcultuur en op interlokale rederijkersfestivals functioneerden kamers als publicatiecentra voor hun beste schrijvers en performers. De rederijkers droegen zo bij aan de opkomst van een volkstalige geleerdencultuur en namen deel aan het publieke debat. Lustige geesten laat zo zien op welke manieren de sociale, institutionele en culturele elementen van de rederijkerscultuur de maatschappelijke invloed van de rederijkers bepaalden en hun bijdrage aan de opkomst van de (noordelijke) Nederlanden als Europees cultureel centrum. Lustige geesten wordt op unieke wijze aangevuld met de site "http://www.lustigegeesten.nl"〉www.lustigegeesten.nl. Deze site presenteert een proposografie van rederijkers - een database met biografietjes van alle bekende leden van de rederijkerskamers van Haarlem (1502-1650), Middelburg (1494-1650) en Den Haag (1494) - en een deel van de bestanden waarop de prosopografie en de analyses uit Lustige Geesten gebaseerd zijn. Dirk Volkertzoon Coornhert (1522-1590) was a renowned publicist and supporter of Willem van Oranje. The Bibliotheca Dissidentium Neerlandicorum publishes works on the non-coformist history of the Netherlands (religious, philosophical and artistic) of approximately 1350 until the present day. These works of various non-conformist authors are published by Amsterdam University Press, under the Coornhert Stichting imprint
    Kurzfassung: Synode over de gewetensvrijheid is het verslag van een fictief 'godsdienstgesprek'. Coornhert voert vertegenwoordigers uit de verschillende kampen ten tonele die hij soms letterlijk citeert (o.a. Beza, Calvijn, Du Plessis-Mornay en Bullinger). Gamaliel (pseudoniem voor Coornhert) is de onpartijdige, wijze scheidsrechter. Synode over de gewetensvrijheid is niet alleen een belangrijk tijdsdocument: door zijn doelstelling, bevordering van de religievrede, en zijn rijkdom aan argumenten kunnen we in het huidige tolerantiedebat zeker ons voordeel doen met de lessen van déze Hollandse meester. Dirk Volkertzoon Coornhert (1522-1590) was een vooraanstaand medestander van Willem van Oranje. In zijn sterk anti-dogmatische benadering van vraagstukken van religie (-politiek) nam hij motieven op die vóór hem leefden (Erasmus) en na hem (de remonstranten, Grotius, Spinoza) werkzaam zouden blijven. In de Bibliotheca Dissidentium Neerlandicorum verschijnen publicaties op het gebied van de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse (religieuze, filosofische en artistieke) non-conformisme van circa 1350 tot onze tijd. De DBN omvat een reeks tekstedities en een reeks studies over belangrijke non-conformistische auteurs. Toch bleven de internationale betekenis en het verhaal van de verliezers, de Spaanse Nederlanden en de stad 's-Hertogenbosch, tot nu toe sterk onderbelicht. Aan de hand van breed en veelal ongebruikt bronnenmateriaal werpt Peter de Cauwer in Tranen van bloed nieuw licht op dit 'roemrijke, maar gevaarvolle jaar'. De inmiddels vergeten Amsterdamse arts/publicist Van Dieren (1861-1940) genoot in zijn tijd grote bekendheid. Toch is hij altijd een buitenstaander gebleven. In dit boek komen het leven en werk van deze Nederlandse Don Quichot ruimschoots aan bod. Hiervoor is geput uit uniek bronmateriaal, waaronder briefwisselingen tussen Van Dieren en een groot aantal bekende Nederlanders zoals Van Eeden, Verwey, Polak, Eijkman en koningin Emma. It is the first study to bring together both published and unpublished material about the history of the health of Belgian men and women and to analyze it critically. Isabelle Devos studies the mechanisms of the historic fall in the death rate in an original manner and answers the question why research on the causes of this decline has not progressed faster. While the discipline of historical demography orients the first part of her book, the discipline of historical epidemiology provides the perspective taken in the second part, in which the role of insects as spreaders of disease is explored.     Kurzfassung: In de zeventiende eeuw ging vrijwel iedere toneelvoorstelling gepaard met muziek. Er werd niet alleen gemusiceerd tussen de bedrijven, maar ook in het toneelstuk zelf. Muziek diende als achtergrond en versiering en was functioneel geïntegreerd in de handeling van het drama. Uit de rekeningen van de Amsterdamse Schouwburg blijkt dat men professionele musici in dienst had; daarnaast werd er gezongen en gedanst door de acteurs. In navolging van buitenlandse toneelmuziekstudies wordt in dit boek voor het eerst uitvoerig aandacht besteed aan de zeventiende-eeuwse theatermuziek in de Nederlanden. Centraal staat de toneeldichter Jan Harmensz Krul, die de muziek op vakkundige manier in zijn toneelstukken verweefde en die in 1634 de Amsterdamse Musyck-kamer oprichtte - een stichting die geheel gewijd was aan het samengaan van poëzie en muziek op het toneel. Aan de hand van vijf karakteristieke muzikale scènes uit zijn werk (de wachterscène, gevangenisscène, serenade, offerscène en slaapscène) wordt een beeld geschetst van de toenmalige Amsterdamse toneelmuziekpraktijk. Zulke muzikale scènes waren ook geliefd bij andere toneeldichters, in binnen- en buitenland. Zij hadden voor het publiek een signaalfunctie: het waren direct herkenbare situaties, ijkpunten in het drama, die standaard met muziek werden geassocieerd. Dichters varieerden hierop naar hartelust. Voor toneelschrijver en toeschouwer waren die stereotiepe muzikale scènes wat muziek was voor de personages in de toneelstukken: een effectief middel om te manipuleren - een perfecte verleiding, van oog, oor en hart

    Kurzfassung: Plantages en slaven vormden meer dan twee eeuwen de kern van de Surinaamse maatschappij. Surinaams contrast biedt op basis van een bijna tienjarig onderzoek van Nederlands, Surinaams en Engels archiefmateriaal over enkele honderden plantages de meest uitvoerige en diepgaande studie over deze tweeëenheid. De studie schetst een levendig en gedetailleerd beeld van de Surinaamse samenleving in de achttiende en negentiende eeuw. Aangetoond wordt dat er meerdere plantagesectoren waren- koffie, suiker en katoen--die structureel van elkaar verschilden en ieder een geheel eigen geschiedenis hebben gekend. Ook wordt uitvoerig stilgestaan bij de strijd tegen het water die het leven op de meeste Surinaamse plantages verzwaarde. Voor het grootste deel van de Surinaamse bevolking was de plantage behalve werk- ook woonplaats. Daarom wordt niet alleen de arbeid, maar ook de leefwereld van de plantagebewoners beschreven. Dat daarbij de meeste aandacht uitgaat naar de levenswijze en bestaansstrijd van de slaven ligt voor de hand: zij vormden nu eenmaal de overgrote meerderheid van de bevolking en waren van generatie op generatie gebonden aan de plantages. Surinaams contrast toont voorts aan dat de Surinaamse samenleving voortdurend in beweging was en veranderde. Roofbouw en overleven kenmerkten, in wankel evenwicht, de Surinaamse plantagemaatschappij. In hoeverre Suriname in dit en in andere opzichten afweek van het algemene Caraïbische patroon wordt duidelijk uit de vele vergelijkingen die worden gemaakt met andere plantagekoloniën in de regio
