    Abstract: An image in technicolor. Fifty years of wars in Vietnam 1940-1990 gives a broad and innovative interpretation of the history of Vietnam between 1940 and 1990. Black and white characterisations, one-sided interpretations and prevailing myths are debunked. Instead, a nuanced and multifaceted picture is given in which the United States is less prominent. History is not only written by the victors and, in this case too, the history of Vietnam during this period cannot be attributed solely to Ho Chi Minh and the success of the Communists in 1975. The internal losers, that is, the other political movements and their leaders, must also be given a crucial place in Vietnam's history. For example, the civil wars that took place between 1940 and 1990 played an unmistakable role. The older, idealised image of North Vietnam is inaccurate. This country was a dictatorial and oppressive police state. After 1954, the North Vietnamese leaders were embroiled in a fierce power struggle and were largely responsible for the war in South Vietnam. The answer to the question of who the legitimate representatives of the Vietnamese nation were also requires a more balanced judgment of non-Communist politicians, such as Bao Dai, Ngo Dinh Diem and Nguyen Van Thieu. As for the role of international players, initially, it was the Cold War that determined the United States' interference; later, it was American credibility. In the end, it was the support from China and the Soviet Union that was the deciding factor for North Vietnam's victory. Important new perspectives are given on the role of minorities, the meaning of 'a third way', the devastating effects of the strategy, the role of women and girls, and the mental and cultural aspects of the wars

    Abstract: Dr. Hu Shih (1891-1962) was one of China's top scholars and diplomats and served as the Republic of China's ambassador to the United States during World War II. As early as 1941, Hu Shih warned of the fundamental ideological conflict between dictatorial totalitarianism and democratic systems, a view that later became the foundation of the Cold War narrative. In the 1950s, after Mao's authoritarian regime was established, Hu Shih started to analyze the development and nature of Communism, delivering a series of lectures and addresses to reveal what he called Stalin's "grand strategy" for facilitating the International Communist Movement. For decades--and today to a certain extent--Hu Shih's political writings were considered sensitive and even dangerous. As a strident critic of the Chinese Communist Party's oligarchical practices, he was targeted by the CCP in a concerted national campaign to smear his reputation, cast aspersions on his writings, and generally destroy any possible influence he might have in China. This volume brings together a collection of Hu Shih's most important, mostly unpublished, English-language speeches, interviews, and commentaries on international politics, China-U.S. relations, and the International Communist Movement. Taken together, these works provide an insider's perspective on Sino-American relations and the development of the International Communist Movement over the course of the 20th century

Dat gebeurde door het voeren van een Flamenpolitik, een beleid dat erop gericht was de Vlamingen of in elk geval de Vlaamse beweging in het harnas te jagen tegen België. Dat lukte, want een klein deel Vlaamsgezinden, de zogenaamde activisten, collaboreerde inderdaad. Vanaf de zomer van 1914 zou Berlijn in het bezette land op de Vlaamse beweging inbeuken door een grootscheepse propagandacampagne. De Duitse diensten, gesteund door hun Oostenrijkse bondgenoten, maakten daarbij vooral gebruik van vlugschriften en de geschreven pers, niet alleen in België maar ook in het neutrale Nederland. In de zomer van 1915 was het activisme een feit: een anti-Belgisch Vlaams-nationalisme, waarvan de gevolgen tot op heden voelbaar zijn, had het daglicht gezien. De propaganda die eraan ten grondslag lag was zó vernuftig en ingenieus dat ze niet alleen tijdgenoten overtuigde, maar zelfs meer dan een eeuw later nog steeds historici misleidt. Het is een mooi staaltje van "fake news" avant la lettre

    Abstract: "The Dumbarton Oaks Anthology of Chinese Garden Literature is the first comprehensive collection in English of over two millennia of Chinese writing about gardens and landscape. Its contents range from early poems using plant imagery to represent virtue and vice, through works from many dynasties on both private and imperial gardens, to twentieth-century prose descriptions of the reconstruction of a historic Suzhou garden. Most passages have been translated for this publication, but a number of previously published translations, some of which are now hard to find, are also included. The anthology is divided into nine chapters: five chronological, covering the pre-Qin period to the Qing dynasty; and four thematic, on rocks and flora, the evolution of a single site (Canglang Pavilion in Suzhou), gardens of the mind, and the interplay between garden and landscape as seen through Mount Tai and West Lake. An introductory essay positions Chinese gardens and garden literature in their cultural context. Care has been taken to translate plant names as accurately as possible (given the limitations of the sources), and the anthology includes a glossary showing translated names, Chinese names, and binomials"

    Abstract: "Qiaopi is the name given in Chinese to letters written home by Chinese emigrants to accompany remittances, in the 150 years starting in the 1820s. Qiaopi had numerous functions and dimensions, ranging from economic and social to cultural and political. In June 2013, the Qiaopi Project was officially registered under UNESCO's "Memory of the World" programme, set up in 1992 because of "a growing awareness of the parlous state of preservation of documentary heritage" in the world. This book presents around one hundred letters from Singapore, China, Malaysia, Thailand, the USA, and Canada, including photographic reproductions of the original letters, transcriptions in Chinese characters, and English translations, where necessary with explanatory notes. Most of the letters collected in Chinese and non-Chinese archives, and in this sourcebook, were products of the Qiaopi system as traditionally defined. A few, especially some to and from North America, especially in the second half of the twentieth century, went through the Post Office, and were not handled by Chinese remittance companies. Not all the letters accompanied remittances"--

    Abstract: Het boek A Dutch Miracle van J. Visser en A. Hemerijck uit 1997 analyseerde de rol van onderhandelingen, coördinatie en consensus in het Nederlandse Poldermodel en stelde vast dat het cruciale factoren zijn geweest in het overkomen van de hoge werkloosheid van begin jaren '80 en de goede performance van de Nederlandse arbeidsmarkt in de jaren '90.Nu, bijna 20 jaar later, worden er steeds meer vragen gesteld bij zowel de legitimiteit als de functionaliteit van het Poldermodel. De representativiteit van de vakbonden is dalende en jongeren en het midden- en kleinbedrijf zien zich vaak niet vertegenwoordigd in de Polder die volgens critici op ondemocratische wijze deelbelangen in plaats van het algemeen belang vertegenwoordigt en noodzakelijke hervormingen op sociaaleconomisch gebied in de weg staat. Door differentiatie van belangen tussen sectoren of hoog en laag opgeleiden wordt het voor de sociale partners ook steeds moeilijker om met één stem te spreken en centrale afspraken te maken uit naam van alle betrokkenen. Ook is het voor de sociale partners moeilijker geworden afspraken te maken over sociale zekerheid en vervolgens een rol te spelen in de implementatie van deze afspraken, aangezien hun rol in de uitvoering van de sociale zekerheid is verminderd. Coördinatie van het algemene sociale zekerheidsbeleid en de afstemming met cao's en het arbeidsvoorwaardenbeleid zijn dus moeilijker zijn geworden. Het maken van centrale afspraken wordt verder beperkt door het groeiende belang van Europees beleid en afspraken in Euroverband met betrekking tot overheidsuitgaven, en door voortschrijdende globalisering en finacialisation. Deze ontwikkelingen en kritieken leiden dus tot serieuze vragen over de legitimiteit en functionaliteit het Poldermodel. In dit boek worden de hedendaagse legitimiteit en functionaliteit van het model vanuit verschillende hoeken en disciplines geanalyseerd om zo een beeld te vormen van het Poldermodel anno nu en van de mogelijke rol van het Poldermodel in de toekomst. De lessen van de verschillende hoofdstukken worden in de inleiding bij elkaar gebracht

    Abstract: Long before the Europeans reached the east, the ancient Chinese had advanced their perspectives of the west. In this groundbreaking book, Wang explores a fascinating perspective of the Other. He locates the Other in the alternating directionologies of classical and imperial China, leading the reader into a long history of Chinese geo-cosmologies and world-scapes. In his analysis, Wang also delves into the historical records of Chinese "world activities," or the journeys from being the Central Kingdom to reaching to the "outer regions," separating the construction of illusory from realistic geographies while drawing attention to their interconnected natures. Wang challenges an extensive number of critical studies of Orientalist narratives (chiefly including Edward Said's Orientalism), and reframes such studies from the directionological perspectives of an "Oriental" civilization. He challenges the assumption that the Other must be understood in the sense that has been explained in general anthropology, crucially underlining the European foundations that have shaped its traditional interpretations

    Abstract: De Nederlandse Opstand wordt gewoonlijk beschreven als een aaneenschakeling van politieke polarisering, religieuze radicalisering en militaire mobilisering. Toch vonden tot 1581 telkens opnieuw verzoeningspogingen plaats om deze escalatie te vermijden. Daarbij probeerden zowel edellieden als koninklijke en keizerlijke vertegenwoordigers het conflict op diplomatieke en verzoenende wijze te beslechten. Deze studie gaat over deze vredehandel. Welke verzoeningspogingen werden ondernomen? Waarom werden die telkens opnieuw ondernomen? En vooral, in welke mate konden deze toenaderingspogingen succes boeken? Op basis van archivalische en gedrukte bronnen brengt dit boek de redenen, modaliteiten en mogelijkheden van de vredesonderhandelingen tijdens de beginjaren van de Opstand in kaart. Vanuit de raak- en breekpunten tussen adellijke en Habsburgse verzoeningspogingen werpt dit boek een nieuw licht op de vraag waarom de onderhandelde hereniging met Filips II gedeeltelijk plaatsvond in 1579-1580 en zo een bijkomend motief creëerde voor het Plakkaat van Verlatinge in 1581

Sinds de uitvinding van de boekdrukkunst is controle uitgeoefend op de verspreiding van gedachtegoed dat gevaarlijk geacht werd voor zeden, godsdienst of politiek. Door de eeuwen heen zijn er voortdurend gevallen van verboden boeken geweest. Dit is de eerste studie die deze ontwikkeling in Nederland over een langere periode bekijkt. Aan de hand van opvallende processen en verboden biedt dit boek een chronologisch overzicht van de stand van de censuur in brede zin: alles rond het tegenwerken of verbieden van openbaarmaking via druk, inclusief zelfcensuur ter bescherming van de eigen positie. De bijdragen tonen een overheid die dan weer onberekenbaar is, dan weer scherp, dan weer wankelmoedig. Deze onvoorspelbaarheid leidde ook tot eigen controlediensten bij de katholieken en een zelfstandig moralistisch aanschafbeleid van openbare bibliotheken

    Abstract: In een historisch onderzoek dat een herziening is van de koloniale geschiedschrijving, duikt prof. dr. Jan Breman in een van de zwartste bladzijdes van de Nederlandse geschiedenis. In Koloniaal profijt van onvrije arbeid: het Preanger stelsel van gedwongen koffieteelt op Java, dat meer dan dertig jaar onderzoek omspant, behandelt hij de werking en uitwerking van gedwongen koffieteelt onder de koloniale heerschappij, en de invloed op het maatschappelijk bestel in de hooglanden van West-Java. Hij laat zien hoe de VOC de inheemse landadel inschakelde als goedkope vorm van bestuur. Deze landadel hield de boerenbevolking door middel van uitbuiting en onderdrukking in het gareel. Het Preanger koffieregime werd vanaf 1830 voortgezet in de vorm van het cultuurstelsel. Dwang was inherent aan dit stelsel waarbij de boeren niet alleen verplicht waren om de voorgeschreven arbeidsprestatie te leveren, maar ook om de eenzijdig vastgestelde vergoeding voor de producten zonder protest te aanvaarden. Dat deze opzet succes behaalde beschrijft Multatuli in zijn Max Havelaar. Breman levert met deze studie de feitelijke onderbouwing van de aanklacht door Multatuli, anderhalve eeuw geleden. Hoe komt het dat de werking en uitwerking van het Preanger-stelsel van gedwongen koffieteelt zo lang buiten beeld is gebleven? Breman plaatst scherpe kanttekeningen bij de uitgesproken gunstige oordelen die worden geveld in de koloniale geschiedschrijving. De toon van zelfrechtvaardiging en stilzwijgen over het gebruik van dwangarbeid waarin de koloniale overheid uitblonk, is volgens Breman een opvallend element in de verdediging van de tot nu toe gevoerde politiek. Deze studie kan beschouwd worden als een herziening van de geschiedschrijving én als een sociaalwetenschappelijke verhandeling van Multatuli's werk

    Abstract: In 2008 ontstaat discussie over de vraag of de moord op Kerwin Duinmeijer op 20 augustus 1983 wel als racistisch te bestempelen is. Deze discussie wordt aangejaagd door een net verschenen documentaire over de dader. In 1983 bestond nauwelijks discussie over de vraag of hier sprake was geweest van een racistische moord. In april 2008 stelt Rita Verdonk tijdens de startbijeenkomst van haar beweging Trots op Nederland dat Nederlanders het helemaal niet in zich hebben te discrimineren en dus ook niet racistisch gewelddadig te zijn.     Abstract: Vieringen ter ere van het Huis van Bourgondië-Habsburg vormden in de vroegmoderne Vlaamse en Brabantse steden een belangrijke aanleiding voor de productie en opvoering van literaire teksten. Ze droegen daardoor in belangrijke mate bij aan de bijzondere ontwikkeling van het stedelijke literaire leven. Op hun beurt waren toneelstukken, gedichten en liederen bepalend voor het verloop, de werking en de betekenis van het stedelijke vorstenfeest. Deze publicatie onderzoekt voor het eerst de interactie tussen dergelijke vorstenfeesten en literatuur binnen een breed geografisch en tijdskader. Speciale aandacht gaat uit naar de kamers van retorica, die zich bezighielden met het schrijven en opvoeren van teksten en nauw betrokken waren bij het organiseren van vorstenfeesten. Hun stempel op deze vieringen blijkt groter en meer divers te zijn geweest dan tot op heden werd aangenomen. Voor vorst en stad beweegt zich op het snijvlak van politieke, literatuur- en cultuurgeschiedenis.     Abstract: In Politieke geschriften geeft publicist Dirck Volckertzoon Coornhert (1522-1590) op indringende wijze zijn visie op de politieke situatie in zijn tijd. De Opstand verkeert in een diepe crisis, de tegenstander is overmachtig en de opstandelingen zijn onderling verdeeld. Met pragmatische en politiekprincipiële argumenten verdedigt Coornhert in zijn brieven en traktaten de vrijheid van religie.     Abstract: This book contains a unique new selection of his most important essays from the extensive oeuvre of the Dutch historian Johan Huizinga. These essays and studies have been chosen on the basis of the different subject matter that Huizinga was involved in; ranging from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Modern History and Cultural History in general. These selections are introduced and illuminated by Prof. dr. Willem Otterspeer who is also Huizinga's biographer. Johan Huizinga was born in Groningen, in 1872. He studied Dutch and Oriental language and literature at the University of Groningen (1891 - 1895) and comparative linguistic at the University of Leipzig (1895-1896). In 1915, he was appointed professor of general history at the Leiden University. His most famous works include The Autumn of the Middle Ages (1919), which dealt with life, ideas, art, and behaviors of the upper classes of Burgundy in the 14th and 15th centuries, Erasmus (1924), a biography of the famous Dutch Renaissance scholar, and Homo Ludens (1938), focusing on the element of play in human culture

Deze essays en studies zijn geselecteerd op basis van de diverse disciplines waarmee Huizinga zich bezighield - van de Middeleeuwen tot de Renaissance en van de moderne tot de algemene culturele geschiedenis.     Abstract: Nauw met elkaar verbonden, maakten theater en retorica vanaf de vijftiende eeuw in de Latijnse geleerdencultuur en de volkstalige wereld van het verstedelijkte Europa een renaissance door. Op basis van onderzoek naar ideeën, (literaire) praktijken en leden laat Lustige geesten zien dat de rederijkerskamers de Nederlandse variant waren van een vroegmoderne cultuur van publieke welsprekendheid, met het theater als quintessens. Rederijkers (rhetoriziens) drukten de intellectuele en maatschappelijke missies van hun kamers uit in het kernbegrip retorica (rhetorique) dat zowel verwees naar (utopische) idealen van burgerlijkheid als naar het toepassen van kennis (conste) in een geëngageerde cultuur. De noordelijke Nederlanden (vooral Holland en Zeeland) vormden met de zuidelijke (vooral Vlaanderen en Brabant) één rederijkerswereld van overlappende netwerken waarin via een actieve lees-, gespreks- en discussiecultuur internationale culturele trends lokaal en regionaal verwerkt werden. De middelen van publieke welsprekendheid (het schrijven en opvoeren van toneelspel, lied, gedicht) waren (intern) bedoeld om (in een ludieke en competitieve sfeer) de geest van jonge mannen uit gegoede families en middengroepen te vormen. Door de organisatie (extern) van opvoering in de lokale feestcultuur en op interlokale rederijkersfestivals functioneerden kamers als publicatiecentra voor hun beste schrijvers en performers. De rederijkers droegen zo bij aan de opkomst van een volkstalige geleerdencultuur en namen deel aan het publieke debat. Lustige geesten laat zo zien op welke manieren de sociale, institutionele en culturele elementen van de rederijkerscultuur de maatschappelijke invloed van de rederijkers bepaalden en hun bijdrage aan de opkomst van de (noordelijke) Nederlanden als Europees cultureel centrum. Lustige geesten wordt op unieke wijze aangevuld met de site "http://www.lustigegeesten.nl"〉www.lustigegeesten.nl. Deze site presenteert een proposografie van rederijkers - een database met biografietjes van alle bekende leden van de rederijkerskamers van Haarlem (1502-1650), Middelburg (1494-1650) en Den Haag (1494) - en een deel van de bestanden waarop de prosopografie en de analyses uit Lustige Geesten gebaseerd zijn.
