Abstract: Two families are employed by a landowner to work on his rice fields. One of them used to own their own land, but was evicted for being unable to keep up with his hefty loan payments. In the absence of machinery, they plant rice using traditional farming methods and an untrained buffalo. However, the low market prices for rice mean that they have to supplement their income with picking wild mushrooms. They also eat wild frogs, snakes and honeycomb when their income proves to be too meagre to feed the family. In contrast, a neighboring farmer, a retired teacher, farms his land organically and hopes to keep the land fertile with the rice stalks, so that he will always be able to grow food for himself. Thai director Uruphong Raksasad had grown up in the same village where the film is beautifully shot, and had chosen to use local farmers as his actors. Keywords: Farmers ; Herders ; Thailand Social life and customs. ; Canada ; Feature films.
Abstract: 8 moving vignettes reveal vivid contrasts of 21st-century life among farmers/herders in Thailand's northern mountains. Profound continuities of age-old traditions are countered by scattered but crucial technological benefits -- telephones, tin roofs, the car leading a Buddhist procession through rice fields, the rifle an old man uses to scare intruders. Cattle-rustlers on motorcycles interrupt agricultural methods thousands of years old, but the loneliness of the elderly is punctuated by phone calls with city relatives. They share dependence upon nature, each other (and pets), but their temperaments vary from the lone farmer pondering the sky with his dog, to a merry group of bicycling musicians visiting a temple. The vignettes, accompanied by the sounds of rain, threshing, and local musicians, are intercut with visually poetic takes focusing on timeless satisfactions clouds, mountains, waving grain, the full moon under which children tell ghost stories inspired by the mysteries of birth and unexpected death. Abstract: A-long comes from a long line of dragon dancers and is driven to prove his own worth. A pride to their town of Longphozai, his family has always observed cultural traditions and respected the village leaders -- unlike A-long's childhood sweetheart Fengmei. Wilful and rebellious, Fengmei is determined to be with A-long even if it means flouting the Huayao tradition by joining A-long's dragon dance team. Her impulsive charisma drives the team into numerous fixes and repeatedly brings the wrath of the village elder down upon a frustrated, confused A-long. But with a major dragon dance competition approaching, can A-long and Fengmei learn to balance their love with their cultural traditions? Or will they be forced to sacrifice one for the other? This lighthearted comedy deftly intertwines traditional Huayao song, dress and dance to illustrate the role of historical tradition in modern young love, and shot with brilliant scenery of China's countryside. Abstract: This filmic offering by acclaimed director Prasanna Vithanage (Walls Within and Death on a Full Moon Day) is a poignant narrative of human displacement against the backdrop of the bitter, real-life conflict between the Sinhalese and Tamil people of Sri Lanka. The film traces the experience of three individuals, each of whom is affected by the war in different ways. Chamari enlists the aid of a London-based journalist to help locate her husband, a pilot who was captured by the Tamil Tigers; a young Muslim boy, Arfath, tries to keep his dog, even as his family joins thousands of other Muslims in a mass exodus to escape the conflict; and Dumida, a lonely young soldier, discovers that his sister has been working as a prostitute in a brothel that serves both Sinhalese and Tamil soldiers. All of these events, presented from a Sinhalese perspective, take place under the searing heat of a hot August sun and the weight of lengthy civil war. Abstract: During her summer vacation, Dawa returned to Lhasa to see her grandparents. Unfortunately her grandfather was ill and dying. During this time, her grandmother, Yixi Zhuoma, told Dawa her love stories with three men. The first man in Yixi's life was Jiacuo, a strong mule boy from Kangba. At the same time Gongsa, the young master of Luoga Garden, had fallen in love with Yixi. Jiacuo was not persuaded and eloped with Yixi and married her. Their marriage and Jiacuo's great energy brought Yixi a very happy and romantic time in her life. However, as a mule boy, Jiacuo was used to an unstable lifestyle, which drove Yixi back to Gongsa. During the 1950s, Gongsa fled with the Dalai Lama and took Yixi's youngest son with him, asserting that the son was his. In the meantime, Jiacuo could not tolerate Yixi's betrayal and decided to return to his hometown, Kongba, with his oldest daughter. Several years later, when Yixi got the news that Jiacuo was seriously ill, she immediately decided to begin her difficult and dangerous journey searching for her husband. During that difficult time, she met her old friend Songqiu Lama, who was her third man as well as her forever lover in her life. In their youth, they used to spend a lot of time together, and Songqiu taught Yixi how to write and sing. Unfortunately, they were separated after Songqiu became a monk. With the coming of the Cultural Revolution, Songqiu was forced to leave his temple and lived as an ordinary man again. This enabled him to accompany Yixi to continue her difficult journey. He also encouraged Yixi to return to her husband and he would like to go back to being a Lama again. Dawa sets out to find these men. Abstract: For twenty years, Camh has lived in North Vietnam, unable to return to his home in the south, a small fishing village where his wife waits for him. She has been a guerrilla fighter for the triumphant communist forces, and has made a living selling food in the market. She is happy to reunite with her husband until she learns that he has married a young woman in the north and has a child by her. The love triangle becomes more complicated: Huy, a man who has lost a leg is in love with Troa, who does not return his affection, and there is Hoa, a young woman who has lost both legs and who is in love with him. All of the characters' emotional injuries are as deep as those of Huy and Hoa, but they behave with great kindness towards one another. The movie was made for $36,000, but the lack of special effects allows us to concentrate on the difficulties of reunification and of finding both political and psychic peace. Winner of national prizes - Golden Lotus for Best Picture, Best Director, Best actress, Asia Pacific Film Festival for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Film, and Special Prize, Amiens Int'l Film Festival.

Abstract: Adapted from the novel Black Steed by Zhang Chengzhi (who spent four years during the Chinese Cultural Revolution with an Inner Mongolian family), A Mongolian Tale begins with two children being raised by Nai Nai, a wise grandmother, in the peaceful purity of childhood and the Mongolian steppes. Xie Fei's storytelling is simple and resonates with dignity. The spacious, traditional world of the steppe people is an idyllic landscape that seems timeless. Yet this is no fairytale but the story of childhood sweethearts separated by a changing world. Beiyinbulog, a boy whose father has left him to be raised by Nai Nai, has to leave Somiya, her shepherd grandmother's helper, when his father summons him to train in veterinary science in the city. When he returns for her as a folksinger, three years later, he finds her circumstances radically changed. As adults the two find their true destinies and the hand that fate has dealt. How do we redeem our idyllic dreams dashed by realities? Can love and acceptance be found despite betrayal and loss? Beiyinbulog is played by Tengger, a Mongolian-born pop singer and composer who composed the film's haunting, nostalgic score. Abstract: Literally translated, the title means 'The Moon Pierced by Wild Grass,' and the film tells the story of the relationship between an aged traditional song teacher named Waluyo, his folk music disciple Ilalang (who has to cope with memories of his abusive father) and the lovely dancer Bulan, who Ilalang has loved for a long time. The feature is set in Solo, where the vestiges of feudal Javanese culture can still be found, and gamelan music is heard throughout. It is an intensely emotional meditation upon the relationship between the generations and the role of music in the search for recovery from a traumatic past and for identity in an uncertain present. Director Garin Nugroho, who has described himself as 'a Javanese living amidst multiculturalism,' and who celebrates Indonesian cultural diversity in such films as A Poet, here explores Javanese culture. He sees this film as 'encompassing at the same time refinement and cruelty, softness and tyranny, and a beauty based on feudalism.' Awards/Festivals: Best Director Award, Nantes International Film Festival. Special Jury Prize at the Nantes Three Continent Film Festival.

Abstract: U-Wei Bin Haji Saari based The Arsonist (1995) on William Faulkner's short story Barn Burning, transposing it from the Deep South to Malaysia. The filmmaker stays true to its core, but depicts the position of a Javanese man who has married a Malaysian woman, and is continually in a state of rebellion. His family is isolated from the community, and their life is continually disrupted. They are often reduced to camping out in the open with their goats. His middle son admires his courage, but asks himself if his honor demands him to stop his father from ruining himself and their family. The movie premiered at the Singapore International Film Festival, and went on to be the most honored Malaysian film in history, selected in Cannes, and winning the Grand Prize (Best International Film) at the Brussels Film Festival. Other Festivals: Nominated Silver Lion Best Short Film Venice Film Festival 2004; Los Angeles International Short Film Festival 2004.

Abstract: Set in a rice-growing village in Vietnam, this is a tale of crossroads where stories flow together like small rivers of sorrow. 17-year-old Nham has left school to care for his widowed mother, his little sister Minh, and his sister-in-law Ngu. Ngu, whose husband left to work in a coal mine five years ago and has only come home twice for a few days, lives in daily sadness and with a deep longing for him and a complete life. Nham and his family are visited by Quyen, who has come from America to revisit the village where she was raised by her aunt, Nham's relative. Quyen shares her nostalgia for her childhood with Nham as she remembers the places and the life she left before leaving her bad marriage. As Nham befriends her, his sexuality is awakened by her attractive personality and vivacious good looks. Ngu sees this attention being paid to Quyen by Nham and harbors a quiet jealousy. As Nham opens to his sexual feelings, his embarrassment drives him from Quyen but his sexuality is further awakened by innocent comfort given to Ngu. Nostalgia for the Countryside sweeps us through strong emotions as we experience the characters' heartbreaks and sorrows.

Despite being in desperate need of the money he makes from the birds, Lakha's deep love for them inspires him to let many go free. Abstract: The men in a rural Chinese village make secret plans to watch sex and action films from Hong Kong. As the story unfolds it becomes clear that the little village can provide more scandalous and juicy materials than any filmmaker can dream up. The story centers around Xiang, her lazy and abusive alcoholic husband, and their mom-and-pop sesame oil making business.

Abstract: Based on 'The Meek One', a short story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, a 40-year-old antique shop owner and money lender recounts his first meetings with his 17-year-old wife, when she pawned her items at his shop. As the film progresses, their marriage is revealed to be an unhappy one with his wife growing increasingly distant and contemptuous of him. Their relationship gets more complicated with each quarrel and consequent reconciliation, even driving his wife to point a gun to his head. Sadly, it is ultimately she herself who gets destroyed. A languidly-paced drama that is a departure from the average Indian narrative film, told largely through the internal monologue of the husband. Abstract: In 1900 a twelve-year-old girl, Xiaoxiao, comes to a mountain village to discover that her uncle has arranged a marriage with a boy who is still breast-fed at two. Strict clan rules govern all behaviors, and she becomes her husband's nanny (he must call her sister until he is old enough to marry her). In one scene, the villagers are discussing a group of schoolgirls who are allowed to marry whomever they want, and who enjoy reading and a degree of freedom that Xiaoxiao longs for. Huagou, a local peasant, takes notice of Xiaoxiao, now sixteen and taking good care of six-year-old Chunguan, and a love affair begins with terrifying consequences. She knows the feudal values her community clings to, and watches them strip and drown a young widow who has been unfaithful to her husband. That woman's lover lives, albeit with broken legs. And what will happen to her?

Abstract: Director Lee Hyeong-pyo tells us in the opening narration that his film will reflect 'a time when the old age and the new stand shoulder to shoulder.' Kim Hak-gyu, a doctor of Oriental medicine, spends his days hanging out with two friends -- a fortuneteller and a realtor. The three conduct their business from Kim's home in a small alley of traditional Korean homes. Ordinary life happens around this trio, as does trouble. Kim's family problems take center stage throughout most of the film. His stubbornness and arrogance create conflicts for his family and his friends. Across the street from his home is the modern office of Choi Du-Yeol, a doctor of Western medicine, who shares a mutual attraction with Kim's daughter, a widow. Choi knows that Kim frowns on his Western practice as well as his interest in his daughter. Kim's son, Hyeon-gyu, is dating a woman who becomes pregnant. When the two decide to get married, Kim objects and kicks his son out of the house, which stirs other troubles. The trio of friends cheats a couple who want their fortune read out of their wishes as well as their money. And when Choi decides to run for city council, Kim hears of this and decides to run against him despite the warning of his family that this will wreak havoc on them. Lessons come hard for this family as it makes its way toward the modern world. But as in real life, sweetness mingles with the bitter as the meaning and value of family and friends emerge.

Abstract: In a remote fishing village, life is simple and tranquil. Dance and song open the film as the fishermen sing of their good harvest. Their cherished traditions keep the call of modern Seoul at bay, but not for In-soon, the daughter of fisherman Chun-san. She wants to join a friend in Seoul (Ok-boon, an independent woman) to make money and go to school. When her father is lost at sea, the debt he owes to a village lender falls upon In-soon, as her bereaved mother takes more cash from the lender who wants the daughter as his concubine. However, the lender's son, Cheol-soo, woos her into going with him to Seoul where he says she can find a job. Instead, he keeps her for himself and takes her purity. In-soon's friend Ok-boon knows Cheol-soo's ways and helps In-soon to escape. This sets In-soon on a course that threatens to destroy her life. Fisherman's Fire is one of the films from the late Japanese colonial period that the Korean Film Archive (KOFA) obtained through the China Film Archive (CFA) in 2004. Along with Homeless Angel (Jib-eobsneun cheonsa), Story of Sim-chung (Sim Cheongjeon), and Military Train (Gun-yong-yeolcha), it is one of just four films from the 1930s whose existence in Korea has been verified.

Abstract: In 1937, as the Japan-China war intensified, and the Japanese military occupied Chosun (old Korea), this film emerged as a pro-Japanese government-sponsored film. A tale of espionage driven by love, Military Train centers on the friendship between two young Korean men, Jeom-yong and Won-jin. Won-jin is in love with Jeom-yong's sister and wants to free her from her miserable, degrading hostess job, but it will take money to extricate herself from work that has left her in debt to her employer. When a Chinese spy approaches Won-jin and seduces him with the cash he needs, Won-jin divulges secret information about the military train, secrets that he gains from spying on Jeom-yong who drives the military train. After Won-jin leaks the information, he is pricked with guilt and this leads to his trying to undo what he has tragically set in motion. The film was released to coincide with the mobilization of military troops soon after the start of the Sino-Japanese war and to promote the importance of the military mission of the railroad to transport the troops. Along with Homeless Angel (Jib-eobsneun cheonsa), Story of Sim-chung (Sim Cheongjeon), and Fisherman's Fire (Eohwa), it is one of just four films from the 1930s whose existence in Korea has been verified.

Abstract: Before World War II, modern Seoul in the thirties was an urban landscape of cafes, hotels, and show rooms, presented compellingly (and clearly under Japanese colonial governance). A vain housewife, drawn to such places, desires a life free from traditional chores and wifely obligations. She rejects her bird in a cage status and is expelled from her home by her husband Seon-yong. Abandoning her young daughter Jeong-hee, Ae-soon moves into a hotel with her lover Chang-geon, while her heartbroken daughter is encouraged by her father to go on with life. Ae-soon finds out that her lover is not rich at all but is a laundry worker. When he robs the hotel, Ae-soon turns him in. She then meets a fate that turns her life to darkness. One of the featured films in The Past Unearthed: The Second Encounter/Collection of Chosun Films in the 1930s, a boxed set, Sweet Dream is the earliest surviving Korean film, now restored.
