Abstract: Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom details the escape of Ellen and William Craft from slavery in Georgia in the United States. Well publicized at the time, the married couple became celebrities in the abolitionist struggle. Their daring and risky plan meant passing the light-skinned Ellen off as a white male traveling with 'his' slave, William, as no woman would have traveled alone with a slave at the time. Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom gives a unique historical opportunity to witness a first hand account of notions of race, gender and class as they stood in a nineteent

Abstract: The Cape Flats, a windswept, barren and sandy area which rings Cape Town, is home to more than a million people. Many live here in sprawling shack settlements. The post-apartheid state is attempting to eradicate such settlements by providing formal houses in planned residential estates. Raw Life, New Hope is a longitudinal study of the residents of one such shack settlement, The Park, who moved to new, 'formal' houses in The Village, at the turn of the millennium. It introduces readers to core social science topics and modes of theorising. Over 17 years the author has traced how ordinary people attempt to live in accord with their ideals of decency under almost impossible circumstances, and the effects of material changes in their lives after 1994, including the provision of housing. Photos, maps, anecdotes, recipes and philosophical reflections on subjects that arose during conversations elicit a sense of the everyday and of how people try to solve the problems of poverty

Abstract: Dying and death are topics of deep humane concern for many people in a variety of circumstances and contexts. However, they are not discussed to any great extent or with sufficient focus in order to gain knowledge and understanding of their major features and aspects. The present volume is an attempt to bridge the undesirable gap between what should be known and understood about dying and death and what is easily accessible. Included in the present volume are chapters arranged in three sections. First, there are chapters on aspects of dying, written by people who have professional experience and

Abstract: Agent-Based modeling/simulation is an emergent approach to the analysis of social and economic systems. It provides a bottom-up experimental method to be applied to social sciences such as economics, management, sociology, and politics as well as some engineering fields dealing with social activities. This book includes selected papers presented at the Fifth International Workshop on Agent-Based Approaches in Economic and Social Complex Systems held in Tokyo in 2007. It contains two invited papers given as the plenary and invited talks in the workshop and 21 papers presented in the six regular sessions: Organization and Management; Fundamentals of Agent-Based and Evolutionary Approaches; Production, Services and Urban Systems; Agent-Based Approaches to Social Systems; and Market and Economics I and II. The research presented here shows the state of the art in this rapidly growing field.

Abstract: Sharon Zukin argues that the rapid and pervasive demand for authenticity--and the consequent escalating real estate prices--has helped drive out the very people who first lent a neighborhood its authentic aura: immigrants, the working class, and artists. Zukin traces this economic and social evolution in six archetypal New York areas--Williamsburg, Harlem, the East Village, Union Square, Red Hook, and the city's community gardens--and shows that for followers of Jane Jacobs, this transformation is a perversion of what was supposed to happen.

Abstract: The mechanisms of protest and revolution have been the subject of theoretical research for over a century, yet the lack of data has hindered the empirical validation of conflicting theories. In this book, the author presents a unique new set of sub-daily data from over thirty countries and seven civil wars and uses them to test two models of conflict, the predator-prey model and the competing species model. The dynamic nature of the data modelling and the novelty of the dataset make this work a unique contribution to the field of conflict research. Dynamics of Conflict will help to re-evaluate existing theories and chart a new course towards the formal and statistical modelling of conflict.

Abstract: This book analyzes four main episodes of conflict and defense which have affected the region during the last three decades: the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988), which effected the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) from a close, neighborly distance; the Iraq-Kuwait war (1990-1991), which constituted an attempt to invade the GCC and eliminate one of its member states, Kuwait. And the subsequent attempts to reestahblish a regional inter-state stability in the Gulf (during the mid-1990s, approximately), and the war of Islamic terrorism (notably al-Qa'ida) against Saudi Arabia (leading up to 2005). Abstract: Dr. Michael Kuhn is Senior Researcher at the Vienna Institute of Demography at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna, Austria. Prof. Dr. Carsten Ochsen is Junior Professor for Applied Economic Research at the Department of Economics at the University of Rostock, Germany.
Abstract: This collection of research papers explores some of the salient issues relating to the impact of demographic change on the workings and outcomes of labour markets. A first chapter studies the direct impact of ageing on employment and unemployment. However, the age structure of the workforce also shapes productivity and the scope for innovation, issues which are taken up in turn. Furthermore, it is often argued that a decline in the size of the workforce may be offset by an increase in the workers skills and knowledge. The impact of demographic developments such as ageing and migration on the accumulation and transfer of human capital is, therefore, studied by a further set of contributions. The volume is rounded off with analyses relating to the supply of labour by women and by older workers. The authors ask, for instance, whether (female) labour migration as well as changes in retirement patterns and policies may counterbalance the expected workforce shrinking.

Abstract: Human trafficking is one of the most extreme forms of exploitation in the 21st century. It, therefore, is one of the most urgent political challenges of our global age. Christal Morehouse evaluates the anti-human trafficking policy in the United States of America and the Federal Republic of Germany. The author uncovers policy gaps and hidden policy agendas which weaken the German and American governments’ ability to combat human trafficking. She provides recommendations for policy and research which are designed to amend disparities in the anti-human trafficking policy in both countries. Finally, she examines the larger societal implications for the U.S. and German societies which could arise from failing to deal with this issue.

Abstract: Which factors influence the implementation of climate change measures in the EU? Are there already any indications prior to directive/law approval of (national) implementation difficulties that could later emerge? What are the prerequisites of successful implementation? How can we model implementation? Implementing Climate Change Measures in the EU provides answers to these questions and introduces an all new implementation model.
Abstract: What changed in the United States with Hurricane Katrina was a feeling that we have entered a period of consequences. - Al Gore On February 05, 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published the executive summary of its fourth assessment report (to be published April 06, 2007). In the summary, it not only acknowledged that climate change is happening at an accelerated rate, but also that its consequences would be dreary: changes in precipitation and in wind patterns, a rise of the sea levels, and desert- cation will globally impact the frequency of disasters and impair living standards. Whether or not we believe climate change is happening, over the past two years, we have witnessed a rise of the topic from oblivion to ubiquity and have experienced a growing emphasis on ?nding measures to prevent climate change. There is an unprecedented agreement among environmentalists, politicians, the public, and industry that we have to take effective action. Politicians are putting their creative plans to action unusually fast: Australia bans the light bulb, B- gium switches off lamps along lighted highways, and the US introduces daylight savings time two weeks earlier than in previous years. Industry, the most unlikely candidate for support, is rallying together in action groups like US-Cap or 2 Grad, and more and more consumers are offsetting their emissions through websites like myclimate. Merle Grobbel holds a PhD in Political Science (Public Policy) and works as a consultant for McKinsey Company.

Abstract: The present study addresses the governance architecture of the much debated Open Method of Coordination (OMC) in the field of social inclusion and evaluates its implementation in France, Germany and at EU-level. Based on extensive variable-based empirical research, it assesses both the effectiveness and the legitimacy of the OMC and comes to unequivocal conclusions: Due to the resistance of member states and remaining differences in underlying ideas of social justice, anti-poverty policy could not be Europeanised through the OMC which unfolds as a very weak governance architecture. Abstract: Since the inception of the fragile nation-state in 1943, Lebanon has been faced with the constantly unstable predicament of being torn between Middle Eastern and Western orbits. After examining Lebanon's pre-war consociational democracy as well as the factors behind its collapse in 1975, Tamirace Fakhoury Mühlbacher analyses the post-war order (1990-2006) by shedding light on both interrelated phenomena: communal power-sharing in a turbulent environment and Lebanon's "hybrid democratisation" between Syrian tutelage and the impulses for more liberalisation against the backdrop of exogenous and

Abstract: "Over the last few decades, interest in white-collar crime has tended to take a back seat to ""street"" offenses in terms of theory and research. In response, and reflecting the rising general interest in business and middle/ upper class lawbreaking, The Criminology of White-Collar Crime brings the study of white-collar offending back into the criminology mainstream, analyzing why members of higher social strata resort to criminal activity and offering psychosocial, life course, methodological, and prevention perspectives. Leading scholars expand on the pioneering work of Edwin Sutherland, delving into the variables, situations, and cultural contexts that differentiate white-collar crime from more traditional criminal areas as well as into those that coincide with them. This book asks not only how the study of white-collar crime can enrich our understanding of crime and justice more generally, but also how criminological advances over the last few decades can enhance our understanding of white-collar criminality. To that end, the volume brings together a distinguished group of criminologists, drawn from leaders in the study of white-collar crime as well as important scholars that have advanced criminology more generally and that turn their attention to the problem of white-collar crime for this book."

Abstract: The transformation of Eastern Europe has challenged the characteristics of patron-client relations both in their context and meaning. The former patrimonial frameworks and patterns have worn out while global power and increasing disparities overwhelm traditional systems of patronage. Plamen K. Georgiev discusses the controversial issues of endemic corruption, state capture, institutional fraud, and networks of organized crime in South East Europe and in a wider global context. He traces back types of patronage and patron-client relations through the ages up to modernity. The author critically comments on shifts of loyalties, friendship, nepotism as well as on deficits of constitutional and public procurement in the context of quasi-democracies on the Balkans. His analysis is based on empirical findings and sociological observations made during the past seven years. Finally, the author presents valuable methodological suggestions for innovative interdisciplinary research in this field.

Abstract: An intricate network of contacts developed among women in Europe and North America over the course of the nineteenth century. These women created virtual communities through communication, support, and a shared ideology. Forged across boundaries of nationality, language, ethnic origin, and even class, these connections laid the foundation for the 1888 International Council of Women and formed the beginnings of an international women's movement. This matrix extended throughout England and the Continent and included Scandinavia and Finland. In a remarkable display of investigative research, Marg

Abstract: For the People is a historical docutext that examines the evolution of the struggle for peace and justice in America's past, from pre-colonial times to the present. Each chapter begins with a brief historical introduction followed by a series of primary source documents and questions to encourage student comprehension. Sample photographs illustrate the range of peace activists' concerns, while the list of references, focused on the most important works in the field of U.S. peace history, points students toward opportunities for further research. This is the only historical docutext specifically devoted to peace issues. The interpretive analysis of American peace history provided by the editors makes this more than just an anthology of collected documents. As such, the docutext is an extension and a complement to the editors' recently published popular scholarly survey, A History of the American Peace Movement from Colonial Times to the Present. A central idea in this work is that peace is more than just the absence of war. The documents, and the analysis that accompanies them, offer fresh perspectives on the ways in which the peace movement became transformed from one simply opposing war to one proclaiming the importance of social, political, and economic equality. The editors' premise is that the peace movement historically has been a collective attempt by numerous well-intentioned people to improve American society. The book illuminates the ways in which peace activists were often connected to larger reform movements in American history, including those that fought for the rights of working people, for women's equality, and for the abolition of slavery, to name just a few. With a focus on those who spoke out for peace, this docutext is designed to call to students' attention one of the least discussed classroom subjects in American education today. Students in secondary school Social Studies and American history classes as well as those taking college level courses in U.S. history, American Studies, or Peace Studies will find this work an excellent supplementary reader.

Abstract: At a time when women were barred from clerical roles, middle-class women made use of the informal power structures of Victorian and Edwardian associationalism in order to actively participate as citizens. This investigation of women's part in civic life provides a fresh approach to the 'public sphere', illuminates women as agents of a middle-class identity and develops the notion of a 'feminine public sphere', or the web of associations, institutions and discourses used by disenfranchised middle-class women to express their citizenship. Critiquing scholars who challenge the cultural authenticity of these individuals, Seth D. Abstract: Pathbreaking and controversial, Darwin and International Relations offers the first comprehensive analysis of international affairs of state through the lens of evolutionary theory. Bradley A. Thayer provides a new method for investigating and explaining human and state behavior while generating insights into the origins of human and animal warfare, ethnic conflict, and the influence of disease on international relations. Using ethnological and statistical studies of warfare among tribal societies, Thayer argues that humans wage war for reasons predicted by evolutionary theory -- to gain and p

Abstract: This book offers a synthesis of current research-based understanding relating to people and work opportunities in the events and conventions industry. The book is organized into five parts. The first two chapters set the scene with respect to events and employment within the sector, focusing on a global review and an Australian case context. Subsequent parts consider education and career development in the events and convention sector (chapters 3-7), workplace flexibility in the context of events (chapters 8-9), recruitment and retention (chapters 10-12), and the management of people and work in events and conventions (chapters 13-16). The book has a subject index.

Abstract: Uzi Leibner aims to provide the most accurate picture possible of the nature and history of the rural settlement in the Lower Galilee during Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods when this region played an important role in the development of both Judaism and Christianity. In an attempt to draw a historical reconstruction based on systematic data, a test case area in the »heart« of ancient Galilee was chosen for this research. Uzi Leibner used two distinct disciplines: the study of the relevant historical sources and the advanced archaeological field survey. Greek, Latin, Hebrew and Aramaic sources concerning settlements in the region were translated and discussed. Some fifty archaeological sites from the periods under discussion were identified and surveyed. The analysis of the finds enabled the author to draw a detailed portrait of settlement - including periods of construction, abandonment, prosperity and decline in each site and in the region as a whole. This book sheds new light on major historical issues such as the origins of the Galilean Jewry in the Second Temple Period, the First Jewish Revolt and its outcomes, the Jews of Galilee under Christian regime, demography, economy, continuity and decline

Abstract: Written by a senior scholar and master mariner, Sailors and Traders is the first comprehensive account of the maritime peoples of the Pacific. It focuses on the sailors who led the exploration and settlement of the islands and New Zealand and their seagoing descendants, providing along the way new material and unique observations on traditional and commercial seagoing against the background of major periods in Pacific history. The book begins by detailing the traditions of sailors, a group whose way of life sets them apart. Like all others who live and work at sea, Pacific mariners face the challenges of an often harsh environment, endure separation from their families for months at a time, revere their vessels, and share a singular attitude to risk and death. The period of prehistoric seafaring is discussed using archaeological data, interpretations from inter island exchanges, experimental voyaging, and recent DNA analysis. Sections on the arrival of foreign exploring ships centuries later concentrate on relations between visiting sailors and maritime communities. The more intrusive influx of commercial trading and whaling ships brought new technology, weapons, and differences in the ethics of trade. The successes and failures of Polynesian chiefs who entered trading with European-type ships are recounted as neglected aspects of Pacific history. As foreign-owned commercial ships expanded in the region so did colonialism, which was accompanied by an increase in the number of sailors from metropolitan countries and a decrease in the employment of Pacific islanders on foreign ships. Eventually small-scale island entrepreneurs expanded inter island shipping, and in 1978 the regional Pacific Forum Line was created by newly independent states. This was welcomed as a symbolic return to indigenous Pacific ocean linkages. The book's final sections detail the life of the modern Pacific seafarer. Most Pacific sailors in the global maritime labor market return home after many months at sea, bringing money, goods, a wider perspective of the world, and sometimes new diseases. Each of these impacts is analyzed, particularly in the case of Kiribati, a major supplier of labor to foreign ships
Description / Table of Contents: Introduction: A seafaring perspective -- Sailors, myths and traditions -- The first pacific seafarers -- Settlements, territories and trade -- The arrival of foreign ships -- Pacific commercial shipowners -- Under foreign sail -- Dangers, mutinies and the law -- Companies, colonies and crewing -- Island protests and enterprises -- Contemporary local and regional shipping -- The global pacific seafarer -- Epilogue: Some contemporary resonances.

Abstract: In this era of ubiquitous information flow, heightened mobility and limitless consumer convenience, human interaction with new technologies has become increasingly seamless. In the process the human body is effectively and steadily reduced to just another interface or a "second life", so to speak. What is easily forgotten during this translucent transaction is that being human also necessarily implies being embodied. In other words, to constitute a body in its non-negotiable physicality is st

Abstract: This volume explores the discourses and representations that have circumvented the image that is the Traveller, the Roma (Gypsy) and migrant "Other". It is generally acknowledged that the globalisation and mass-media dissemination which characterise the current era have overseen a range of complex socio-cultural forces, many of which have blurred the once-reified borders of the post-Enlightenment, "modern", nation-state. Nowhere is this more evident than in the case of cultural diasporas and

Abstract: Never before has research into the benefits and drawbacks of the Chinese migration to Prato in Tuscany been presented so comprehensively in English. The recent influx of Chinese to the longstanding textile manufacturing and wholesale businesses in Prato has stirred strong emotions in the host culture and among the new arrivals alike. The breadth of the coverage of this publication is demonstrated by the full range of perspectives focused on the economic and social dilemmas being experienced

Abstract: For centuries, India has been known for its politico-religious structures, which have developed casteism and discrimination. Gender-based oppressions have been prominent features of the patriarchal culture in India - both obvious and subtle forms of gender inequity. Multiple rites, customs, traditions and protocols reflect gender discrimination, and in most cases show gender oppression. The subordination of women visible in Indian context can be referred in historic shift from matrilineal str

Abstract: "Emile Durkheim's conceptual framework outlined social reality as a moral social environment consisting of supra-individual norms for thought and action. Law, morals and other spheres of social order are generated within and by society. Law is a visible external symbol. Durkheim reaches the conclusion that penal law is religious in its nature
Abstract: Most of the texts deal with the relations between Sociology and Law and refer to Durkheim's heritage in dealing with specific problems in different societies and fields of study. Topics range from Socio-Legal Studies and Law, to analyses of constitutions, case studies from the judicial system and civil servants, new religious movements, Durkheim's place in the Sociology of Religion. Other topics cover contemporary ethnic conflict, cyberspace, media, morality, education, gender studies, etc. This book will be of interest to sociologists, lawyers, anthropologists, historians, scholars in cultural studies, religious studies, students, researchers, etc."--Pub. desc

    Abstract: Annotation
Abstract: Long considered as "outsiders" or "strangers" in their own country, The Travellers depicted in this book were essential agents in their own depiction; they were the drivers for these cultural representations of their own community. Paul Harrison's photos are beautiful because they are arresting. They show us a "hidden Ireland", one that is often relegated To The societal margins. They haunt the viewer. They interrogate the notion of what it means to be human. The late-twentieth century has witnessed a particular prominence assigned To The discourses of "difference" and "Otherness", discourses which subvert hegemonically-defined representations and demystify what was once simple domination and reification. Representations of cultural minorities, whether literary or visual, play a profound role in how groups such as Irish Travellers are defined and treated by the non-Traveller community. Essentialist notions of migrants and other traditionally-nomadic peoples have a long and complex history. The history of Irish Traveller is no different. For hundreds of years they have en-numerated the projective function of the "Othering" process, a form of rejection and marginalisation that was the institutionalization of ideas and images

Abstract: Public and media interest in the climate change issue has increased exponentially in recent years. Climate change, or "global warming," is a complex problem with far-reaching social and economic impacts. Climate Change in the 21st Century brings together all the major aspects of global warming to give a state of the art description of our collective understanding of this phenomenon and what can be done to counteract it on both the local and global scale. Stewart Cohen and Melissa Waddell explain and clarify the different ways of approaching the study of climate change and the fundamental ideas behind them. From a history of climate change research to current attempts to mitigate its impact such as the Kyoto Protocol and carbon trading, they explore key ideas from many fields of study, outlining the environmental and human dimensions of global warming. Climate Change in the 21st Century goes beyond climate modeling to investigate interdisciplinary attempts to measure and forecast the complex impacts of future climate change on communities, how we assess their vulnerability, and how we plan to adapt our society. The book explores the impact of climate change on different ecosystems as well as what the social and economic understanding of this phenomenon can tell us; it also links discussions of climate change with the global discourse of sustainable development

Keywords: Interpersonal communication ; Friendship ; Interpersonal relations ; FAMILY & RELATIONSHIPS ; Friendship ; Friendship ; Interpersonal communication ; Interpersonal relations ; Electronic books ; Electronic books
Abstract: "Exploring how friends use dialogue and storytelling to construct identities, deal with differences, make choices, and build inclusive communities, The Compass of Friendship examines communication dialectically across private, personal friendships as well as public, political friendships. Author William K. Rawlins uses compelling examples and cases from literature, films, dialogue and storytelling between actual friends, student discussions of cross-sex friendships, and interviews with interracial friends. Throughout the book, he invites readers to consider such questions as: What are the possibilities for enduring, close friendships between men and women? How far can friendship's practices extend into public life to facilitate social justice? What are the predicaments and promises of friendships that bridge racial boundaries? How useful and realistic are the ideals and activities of friendship for serving the well-lived lives of individuals, groups, and larger collectives?" "The Compass of Friendship is appropriate for use in courses in Advanced Interpersonal Communication, Friendship Communication, Communication in Interpersonal Relationships, Relational Communication, Social and Personal Relationships, Dialogue and Communication, Social Identities and Communication Ethics."--BOOK JACKET
