Abstract: Attitudes toward food and eating are an often-neglected area of Sufi thought and practice. In this article, I analyze medieval Sufi food practices as a mode of piety. In doing so I focus on distinctions between pleasure and pain brought on by food consumption and abstention, and the gestures that accompany these experiences. By focusing on Sufism from the 11th-13th centuries CE, this article traces Sufi approaches to food through theoretical, practical, and hagiographical texts over time. I first detail the interconnection between the body and mystical experience in Sufi theory, before moving on to a discussion of more practical approaches to food consumption. I then consider Sufi narratives involving food and its connection to sex and gender before turning to questions of food habits and belonging. In doing so I intend to highlight how Sufi food practices played a significant role in embedding pious bodily habits within Sufi communities.

Abstract: This article draws on long-term ethnographic research on the uses of social media and their consequences for people’s everyday lives to shed light on how young men’s long-standing concerns over reputation and shame have been rearticulated through the use of social media. In Mardin, a mediumsized city in southeast Turkey, reputation and shame are key concerns in social media usage and affect different domains of people’s everyday lives, such as politics, love and friendships. In this article, reputation is conceived as the value an individual has in other’s people eyes, on social media being granted by displaying the desired qualities and by receiving expressions of social approbation in a context of constant surveillance. This has been extensively described in terms of the logic of honour across different cultures and at different times. Shame is viewed as an emotional experience generated by social practices that openly transgress social norms. Viewing reputation and shame as bound to mediated practices opens up new opportunities to investigate the transformation of long-standing concerns that continue to have great significance in people’s lives in southeast Turkey. It sheds light on processes of continuity and transformation that are entangled with the diffusion of digital communication technologies.

Abstract: In the mountainous region of the Central High Atlas in Morocco, tourism has emerged as a promising economic prospect among a number of profound changes recently. However, the implications of digital media technology in situ and as part of this wider transformation have rather been neglected by scholarship. Hence, in this paper I propose the notion of digital hospitality to map out and articulate the interplay of digital media, tourism and ‘Mediterranean themes’ like hospitality, topography and connectivity, and to make it tangible how processes of sociotechnical restructuring are challenging the interactions and possible relationships between guests and hosts in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Drawing on extended ethnographic fieldwork in the High Atlas, I analyse the ultramarathon sports event ‘Zaouiat Ahansal Ultra Trail’ as a mediated, circulated and digitised phenomenon. It is the readjusted focus on (digital) media technology, which foregrounds social practices and cooperation, that allows this trail-running event to be understood as an achievement of the organizers’ scaling work, which in turn feeds into and interacts with the scalar characteristics of hospitality itself.

Abstract: Funerary lament and ritual weeping are multi-sensorial public expressions of grief that are often referred to as examples of cultural continuity in and across the Mediterranean. In the 1950s, anthropologist Ernesto de Martino and his team assembled a unique set of photos and sound and film recordings on lament in Southern Italy in an attempt to verify that contemporary forms of mourning did not just resemble ancient funerary laments but were actual relics thereof. Departing from these audio-visual materials, this essay traces recurring patterns and sequences of images and sounds related to lament in Southern Italy, arguing that the (female) body of the performers becomes the main medium of iconographic and choreographic reproduction by way of re-enacting and imitating lament in staged settings. Rather than studying the phenomenon of lament in itself (or its decline) or commenting on the continuity thesis, I focus on the mediatised transmission of corporeal expressions of lamenters by drawing on Aby Warburg’s concept of the “migration of images” (Bilderwanderung). I include artistic approaches and modes such as re-enactment, performance, and montage in my ethnographic study of ritual mourning and show that there is a repertory of ecstatic gestures transferred through command performances that is not concerned with “authentic” documentation. Instead, these gestures are there to be performed, individually reappropriated, and revived in situations of crisis to the present day.

Abstract: Objective At work, people are confronted with clear behavioral expectations. In line with the Social Investment Principle, the beginning and ending of working life might thus promote changes in personality traits that are relevant at work (e.g., Conscientiousness). Method Based on the data from the Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP), we examined nuanced differences of the Big Five personality traits in the years around the beginning and ending of working life. Whether participants had started working or retired in the past year was assessed yearly. The Big Five personality traits were assessed in four waves between 2005 and 2017. Results In people who started working, multilevel analyses revealed that Conscientiousness was higher in the first year of working life versus all other years. Extraversion was higher in and after the first year of working life versus before, and Agreeableness increased gradually in the three years after people had started working. In people who retired, Conscientiousness was lower in and after the first year of retirement versus before. No other traits differed around the start of retirement. Conclusions Our findings suggest that the start of working life might promote personality maturation and that retirement might promote personality “relaxation.”

Abstract: In ethnographic research and analysis, reflexivity is vital to achieving constant coordination between field and concept work. However, it has been conceptualized predominantly as an ethnographer’s individual mental capacity. In this article, we draw on ten years of experience in conducting research together with partners from social psychiatry and mental health care across different research projects. We unfold three modes of achieving reflexivity co-laboratively: contrasting and discussing disciplinary concepts in interdisciplinary working groups and feedback workshops; joint data interpretation and writing; and participating in political agenda setting. Engaging these modes reveals reflexivity as a distributed process able to strengthen the ethnographer’s interpretative authority, and also able to constantly push the conceptual boundaries of the participating disciplines and professions.

Abstract: This paper offers an exploratory overview of different research literatures examining the relationship between urban nature or green space on the one hand, and marginalized, stigmatized, and illicit activities on the other. We situate this discussion within the geographic literature concerning assemblage theory and informality, and apply these concepts to urban green space. We offer some comparative examples from Detroit and Berlin, two cities known for their green space and illicit activity, but with very different histories and cultural contexts. For this purpose, we draw on our own primary research in both Detroit and Berlin, examining how the dynamics of these interactions produce diverse and distinctive urban places in some cases and associations of danger or insecurity in others, sometimes both simultaneously. We utilize diverse methodologies, including qualitative interviews and focus groups, mobile explorations, photography, and sketching to provide examples of spaces as complex assemblages of actors with diverse, emergent potentials. We conclude by contending that green spaces and urban nature belong on the same map as studies of informal and illicit activities, adopting a more fluid conception of the shifting relationship between people and green space in the evolving city.

Abstract: The ancient geographer Strabo imaged Rome’s conquest of a Mediterranean-wide empire as a ‘knitting together’ of ‘unconjoined’ regions – unconjoined because of a lack of harbours or other natural deficiencies. This article takes the image seriously as a point of entry into the vexed topic of connectivity, in the Mediterranean and elsewhere. In current global history, connectivity has been found everywhere but is seldom precisely defined. The article proposes a return to the type of definition offered in P. Horden and N. Purcell’s The Corrupting Sea (2000), a definition according to which connectivity is inseparable from microregional ecology. After reviewing the intellectual origins and ramifications of that definition, the article critically surveys alternative terminologies that have emerged since 2000, and finds them mostly unhelpful as guides to the nature of Mediterranean contacts and communications. It next examines recent work on recovering and mapping Roman movements of people and goods as a modern version of Strabo, and as suggestive of the directions the subject may profitably take in future. Finally, it offers two examples showing, respectively, the complexities of connectivity within the Mediterranean region (coral fishing) and the differences in pattern and chronology between connectivity around the sea and connectivity across Asia (bubonic plague).

Abstract: This paper argues that the Sahara can be approached as a region following Horden and Purcell’s (2000) suggestions for the Mediterranean. Or at least, that this is true in economic and ecological terms. Internally, however, Saharan connectivity tends to be expressed in terms of genealogies, kinship and alliance, which implies moral evaluation of a kind that Horden and Purcell’s model is less able to capture. This becomes especially apparent with regard to the classification of Saharan settlements. From an ecological point of view, it might be meaningless to describe them as either towns or villages. From a moral point of view and in terms of self-definition, however, their classification matters greatly, in practical as much as representational terms. Moral aspirations emerge as an integral part of human ecologies.

Abstract: For centuries, the Strait of Gibraltar has been a crossroads between Africa and Europe. Since the 1980s, however, it has increasingly become a “zone of illegality” (Hannoum 2020) where racial governmentality produces illicit lives and creates an apartheid-like hierarchy of humanity. By exploring how colonial legacies and EU policies play out in the Strait of Gibraltar, I show how categories of difference are made and remade across time and space. Through a genealogical and ethnographic approach, I study the historically produced particularities that make racialised “Others” emerge and explore how human differences are created in terms of race, gender, and class. Migrants are historical actors that shape and are shaped by the social fabric of a border region. I thus argue that categories of difference are not fixed entities, but instead they are simultaneously reworked, reinforced, contested, and subverted.

Abstract: In their seminal work that helped to re-invent Mediterranean anthropology some 20 years ago, Horden and Purcell argue that the religious landscape reflects both, the fragmented topography of Mediterranean micro-regions and the means by which the fragmentation is overcome. In order to explore how space and time concern the divine along and across Mediterranean shores, this paper examines how social and spiritual borders are crossed in religious practice and how graduated socialities are generated, shaped and negotiated. It argues that connectivities, lateral and vertical, are forged or undone by turning borders into thresholds and vice-versa. Drawing from both, the history of Mediterranean anthropology of religion and ethnographic material from transnational mobile members of trance networks, the paper sketches an anthropology of blessing across nested fields of exteriority and alterity, found within and without the social niches of Mediterranean lifeworlds.

Abstract: This article examines how folk dance is deployed as an innovative tool of urban and rural contemporary protests in Turkey. It specifically focuses on horon, a popular folk dance genre across the country and a cultural heritage of minority communities in the eastern Black Sea region. I investigate how environmental activists transregionally circulate this dance during their coordinated protests in the city of Istanbul and the Rize province in the Black Sea region against a massive infrastructural project called the Green Road in the summer of 2015. The project has become a symbol of the state’s forced developmentalism, violent histories of ethnic and religious minorities and capitalist dispossession, against which multiple iterations of horon seek to create solidarity, social mobilization and political participation. Ethnographic and choreographic methods guide this study to explore the dance as a complex space of physical and social interactions. Its varying aesthetics, contested meanings, and forms of reproduction and circulation provide a lens through which to discuss how protesters negotiate their identities both in horon circles and protests. The improvisational quality of horon helps merge dance, music and chanted poetry together into political action and enables urban and rural protesters to find flexible ways of resistance across the Black Sea.

Abstract: As Therasiotes – residents of Therasia, a sparsely populated island sitting to the west of the globally iconic tourist destination of Santorini – engage with their landscape, they are haunted by a sense of stillness, which contrasts with Santorini’s reverberating modernity. By combining text with photographic imagery, this essay explores how Therasiotes experience quietness and its perceived antithesis, modernity, as well as the ways in which both are entangled in conflicting dynamics of pleasure and aversion, a condition invoking Derrida’s discussion of Plato’s pharmakon, with its inherent vacillation between the categories of cure and poison. The article examines peoples’ material practices and modes of looking in order to understand how they experience time and place and how they rework the island’s position in national and global hierarchies of value. It also proposes a peripatetic narrative structure that mirrors my own physical movements on the island in pursuit of photos and thus explores the ethnographic role of photography as a narrative strategy, an object of study and a research method.

Abstract: In this article, I discuss several options for apprehending the rurality of the Mediterranean world. The place, if any, of the ‘rural’ is related to the geographical basis of the construction of the Mediterranean as a scholarly category. A broad conception of the Mediterranean world that treats it as a region encompassing large parts of the hinterland must take the rural dimension into account. This is demonstrated through a discussion of two historiographical masterpieces dealing with Mediterranean history from the perspective of the longue durée – Braudel’s Mediterranean and Horden and Purcell’s The Corrupting Sea – which are among the best representatives of this broad conception of the Mediterranean region. However, although Braudel devoted many pages to the rural world, he sometimes offers a distorted view of rurality, thus ending up affirming the traditional view of the centrality of the Mediterranean town, influenced by an urbano-centric vision of the region and a solid environmental determinism. In criticizing these biases, Horden and Purcell announce their programmatic intention of ruralizing Mediterranean history, though they finish by revoking the category of the rural itself, alongside that of the urban. They propose instead a view of the Mediterranean world as characterized by the endless vibrancy of the variegated realm of microecologies, with their infinite and minuscule manifestations of connectivity. Their comparative approach implies a passage from the lowest common denominator of microecologies to the whole region, without intermediate levels. The article suggests that, in constructing a history of Mediterranean ruralities, it is important to build a comparative perspective going beyond both Braudel’s determinism and Horden and Purcell’s indifference to space. In this perspective, microecologies should be organized into a sort of ‘Linnaean system’ through a process of separation that takes into account intermediate scales in space and time. From this point of view, ecological types, as portrayed by Braudel, may offer a suitable starting point for a comparative analysis of the various contours of rurality in Mediterranean history. Braudelian ecological types could be a preliminary tool for organizing the analysis of difference, thus building a comparative perspective that takes into account a number of socio-cultural variables that are absent from Horden and Purcell’s perspective. Drawing on material from anthropological and historical research I have carried out in the Alps, I propose some pathways towards a comparative perspective of this sort.

Abstract: In order to examine the entangled notions of rural hinterlands and practices of future- and place-making, this article focuses on an episode from my fieldwork in Egypt’s Eastern Nile Delta in 2015/16, when I accompanied Tahawi Bedouins on their successful campaign during Egypt’s parliamentary elections in 2015. The aim is to shed light on the strategic use of tribal solidarity and patronage networks to mobilize supporters and voters. However, the same tribal networks and resources were also used to invoke and perform the necessary tribal unity when faced with a rural non-Tahawi population. The article develops two ideas, strategic tribalism and maḍyafa (guest house) ecology, to show the election campaign as an example of future- and place-making in a rural setting, whereas the specific constraints, possibilities and meanings embedded in the rural as a resource and a reserve unfold very differently, always reaching beyond romantic notions of the rural as remote.

Abstract: This article pursues two objectives. First, it provides a literature review of research on group radicalization and, second, building on previous research about narratives and their influence on radicalization, it introduces a new concept for comparative radicalization studies: bridging narratives. We use this term to address commonalities in the ideological elements found across various radicalized groups. As narratives shape perceptions of the world and guide processes of identification, they assume an important (internal) function in group formation. At the same time, various radical groups (ethnic nationalists, Salafist-jihadists and militant leftists) share core ideological elements, commonalities that can lead to the creation of new coalitions and unexpected alliances (an external function). The common factor among them are constructed conceptions of the adversary – be they modernity, universalism, Jewish people or feminism. Such constructions allow for the fabrication of an enemy as well as specific conceptions of hierarchical social orders. We analyze two examples in this context: anti-feminism (including heroic or toxic masculinity) and the resistance dispositif that promotes vigilante terrorism. This approach allows us to investigate processes of group radicalization while also taking into account their ideological content as well as the formal effects of such content on processes of group-building and the dynamics of radicalization. In the final section, we provide recommendations for action.

Abstract: Although the practice of writing is key to the production of ethnographic knowledge, the topic remains understudied. Using material from our own ethnographic research in the fields of air travel and cultural heritage as data, we develop a reflexive account of ethnographic writing. We examine in detail the practices of jotting down observations, writing field notes, analytic annotating, ordering and rearranging, and drafting and revising papers. The article takes a praxeological stance, conceptualizing writing as a practice that is simultaneously cognitive, embodied, and material. Our analysis finds that writing influences and shapes all stages of ethnographic work, from orienting perception by setting an appropriate mode of attention to organizing the work itself, e.g., by keeping to-do lists. Writing does not simply communicate ethnographic insights, but—as a result of the activity of texts—it also generates them.

Abstract: Drawing on fieldwork in Bristol, UK, the article resituates the increasingly popular policy framing of a “learning city” within recent anthropological debates on urban political materiality. Using research findings from fieldwork conducted in sites of informal and non-formal learning on the margins of a UNESCO Learning City, we argue for an ethnography that is attentive to the ways in which learning manifests itself in everyday life. Through three field sites—a community space, a bicycle workshop, and a contested heritage campaign—we demonstrate the significance of material culture, controversy, and care as constitutive of learning processes within urban life. Through these examples, we aim to reframe questions on the complexity of learning at a city scale as part of affect-driven knowledge and the material, embodied transmission of skill and everyday practice. By tracing how learning plays out in everyday life, we can begin to interrogate what happens beyond the neoliberal forms of educational governance, and the extent to which the everyday practices challenge or reinforce top-down formulations as well as potentially transforming forms of knowledge production.

Abstract: The recent massive arrival of war refugees has challenged Europe’s political unity and fanned the flames of anti-Muslim populism. Both discourses have been framed in terms of ‘shifting solidarity’ between the European Union member states, their citizens and the refugees. At stake, the article argues, is the delineation of the collectivity linked by the obligation of solidarity. Drawing on insights from research conducted among Polish-born migrants in Germany about their practices and attitudes towards helping the refugees, and critically engaging with social theory, this article offers a new understanding of transnational solidarity. Transnational solidarity, it argues, needs to embrace the tension between cosmopolitan and particularistic ideas around belonging. The article suggests defining transnational solidarity as an outcome of socio-culturally and spatio-temporally specific interpretations of the norm of solidarity. As a heuristic device, transnational solidarity helps us to understand the shifting alliances for and against refugees in Europe.

Abstract: Taking the German picture-encyclopedia Picture Book for Children (1790–1830) of Friedrich J. Bertuch as a vantage point, this article presents a thick historiographical description of the concept of experience and the role of visual material in relation to the figure of the child. I am interested here in the formation of the notion of experience and specifically in the ways experience has played a key role in the debates over the concepts of vitalism, epigenesis, and experience-based (verbal) imagery in the Enlightenment. The broad call for clearness, vividness and the employment of images in the literature of the period highlights crucial negotiations of sense-based practices in education and scholarly knowledge production. Experience, sensation, perception, and observation became catchwords within anthropological and philosophical reflections on how to showcase life itself. Through a careful analysis of early biological images and image practices in Bertuch’s Picture Book, I show the picture was supposed to initiate interaction. Pictures become a crucial part of communication processes and practices of bourgeois self-assurance, also with regards to racialized, sexualized and gendered subject formation.

Abstract: The term “migration background” is commonly used in Germany today, but this neologism is only 20 years old. As an official category, it is even much younger. There has been only little research concerning the new population category, which emerged around the turn of the millennium. Thus, the question how the “migration background” could become the central category describing migration related diversity in Germany is not answered yet. This article fills this gap by exploring the context of the emergence of the “migration background” including the history of ethnic categories in German official statistics. It describes the actual definition of a “migration background” which became an official category in 2007 when the German Federal Statistical Office started publishing data regarding “the population with a migration background” based on the microcensus, a 1% household survey with mandatory participation. The central questions are: how national membership is imagined, how is it inscribed in definitions, and what adaptions had to be made over time? To answer these questions, different sources as questionnaires, publications of results of the microcensus and national reports on children and youth are analysed. Using interpretative methods, it is shown how a new taxonomy of the population in Germany was created, how it was influenced by international and national educational research, and to which extent it reshaped the perspectives on newcomers and natives. It is shown that the new category is tightly bound to citizenship and summarizes a number of older ethnic categories, but excludes also immigrated Germans who immigrated shortly after Second World War and from the former German Democratic Republic. Therefore, the label “migration background” is misleading because inherited citizenship and ancestry is in the centre of the definition rather than migration experience.

Abstract: Objective Although losing one's spouse is one of the worst experiences that can occur in life, it has not been resolved yet how this experience relates to personality development. Method In the German Socio-Economic Panel study, information on the death of a spouse was assessed yearly from 1985 to 2017 and personality was measured repeatedly in 2005, 2009, 2013, and 2017 with a short version of the Big Five Inventory. We used multilevel analyses to simultaneously model whether personality differed between individuals who did or did not lose their spouse and whether personality changed prior to and after this experience. Results Compared to controls without the event, individuals who lost their spouse at a later point of time were more conscientious (β = .21) and more extraverted (β = .17). They became gradually more extraverted in the three years prior to the event (β = .25), but were less extraverted thereafter (β =−.27). Moreover, they gradually increased in Emotional Stability in the three years after this experience (β = .30). These changes were primarily driven by women and middle-aged individuals. Men whose spouse died were less open in the first year after the event (β =−.47). Conclusions Losing one's spouse relates to changes in Extraversion and Emotional Stability, especially in women and middle-aged adults.

Abstract: ‘Research data management’ is booming. Urgently demanded and driven by such diverse actors as research funding institutions, who are interested in quality control and the efficient use of data, or the ‘Open’ movements, who advocate free access to knowledge, ethnologists and cultural anthropologists meet this topic with reluctance and often with skepticism. Rightly so, on the one hand, since the archiving of data and, above all, the intended reuse of data by third parties raise a number of practical, legal and ethical questions. On the other hand, the question of how digital data can be organized and especially permanently preserved and used is virulent also in the ethnological disciplines. In any case, the debate on the subject is urgent because overarching regulatory processes have long since been set in motion. This contribution discusses different aspects of the debate on data management and sketches problem areas, open questions and opportunities which can arise for the ethnological disciplines. Not least, the changing conditions of knowledge production and circulation which occur alongside the establishment of digital techniques and technologies require historical contextualization. Therefore, this contribution also attempts a discipline-specific historical categorization.

Abstract: From 1992 until 1995 about 35 thousand Bosnian war refugees fled to Berlin and were allowed to stay temporarily. After the end of the war in 1995 they were expected to leave as soon as possible. Traumatized persons and elderly without relatives in Bosnia had the possibility to prolong their visa until Bosnia is reconstructed. But the rebuilding process progressed only slowly. With the end of the war did not start the expected peace time and rebuilding but the consolidation of ethnic borders inside democratic structures. Therefore many refugees did not see a possibility to return to their property and tried to delay their return. This was possible with an medical statement certifying a war related posttraumatic stress disorder and their psychotherapeutic treatment. These medical statements ensured the extension of the visa for the concerned person and its family members. From 2000 onwards they could receive a permanent residence title. The connection of a mental illness and psychotherapy with residence entitlements is a novelty in the German aliens law. And despite the fact that psychiatrists and psychologists from Berlin were leading actors in the establishment of the „regularization of the traumatized“ their medical/psychological statements were impeached by the authorities. The dissertation describes the viewpoints of refugees, treating physicians and psychologists and the authorities and how they interact with each other. Additionally is the concept of posttraumatic stress disorder examined and discussed as „boundary object“ (Star/Griesemer 1989). An important aspect is the description of life worlds and tactics of the refugees to get along in Berlin, to gain respect and appreciation for their situation. Their needs were translated into a psychotherapeutic demand and this led to the invention of a new field of work and professionalization for psychotherapists in Berlin. This development is critically reflected.

Abstract: The 2002 FIFA Football World Cup was co-hosted by Japan and South Korea but this co-operation was not a voluntary one. What would the two unequal partners make out of FIFA’s decision? Could the co-hosting become a chance to improve their relation? To interpret the World Cup in terms of Mega-Event theory helps to answer these questions. A Mega-Event is not only a unique chance to promote one’s image to the world but also to create a positive self-image and self-awareness. Both are important processes for the relocation of a nation in the international society and both are what the hosting of a Mega-Event is about. It is here where one finds the Korean and Japanese motivation to host the World Cup 2002. An analyses of the discours in both countries monthly magazines shows how different the expectations were and how Korean and Japanese fans experienced the Event. While South Korea’s first aim was to show to the world its equal standing next to its neighbor Japan, the topics discussed in the Japanese World Cup discours suggest that internationalization was what Japan expected from hosting the Mega-Event. But when the competition started and the Korean team rushed from victory to victory the only thing that mattered were the overwelming emotions of unity millions of Koreans shared. This experience provided an unexpected sence of national pride and self-confidence that changed the Korean self-awareness. This changed attitude might be the most important outcome of Korea’s World Cup hosting. The Japanese team was kicked out of the competition more quickly but this paved the way for many Japanese fans to get more and more interested in the Korean team and to discover an unknown and fascinating Korea. The Japanese who had cheered for the Korean team experienced an unity with Korea no other event could possibly have caused. In these ways the unplaned co-hosting and its unexpected outcomes served both countries’ initial aimes better than a single-hosted Mega-Event would have done.

Abstract: Through the study of standardized practices (walking tours, bus-tours) and devices (maps, guidebooks) for touring cities, this dissertation shows (1) how the city of Berlin is transformed into a virtual object, namely, an urban destination, (2) how such transformation is enabled not simply by tourist movement in space and being away from ‚home‘, but by tourist communication on the city, and (3) how this emergent tourist city is embedded in a multiple and polycontextural urban public sphere, in which it enters into different types of relationship with neighbouring enactments of the city, such as those of city-marketing and collective memory. Subtly informing the whole text there are three aspects to be mentioned: the dissertation proposes a new theory of tourism as a form of communication, not of travel; it integrates Luhmann’s communication theory with actor-network theory; and it is throughout empirical, based on a year-long ethnographic study (2005-2006) of touring practices and devices in contemporary Berlin.

Abstract: For some time “the family” has been perceived as problematic by German media and politics. Not only scenarios of a „dramatically aging society“ are envisioned, but also the question of „educational competences“ is being discussed. In the political debate as well as in media discussions an ambivalence between the priority of the welfare of the child and the protection of parents’ rights is apparent. While governmental protection of „familial privacy“ prevents control of (biological) parents to be, applicants for adoption have to pass an aptitude test to be admitted for (adoptive) parenthood. This M.A. thesis examines the societal notions of family and children which adoptive parents have to deal with. The author analyses the juridical and institutional conditions of adoptions in Germany. She evaluates 16 qualitative interviews of several hours with Berlin adoption agents and adoptive parents (to be) as well as the results of ethnographic observations in an adoption support group. With reference to theoretical concepts that are modelled on Foucault’s idea of governmentality the thesis examines in how far one can speak of a standardization or normalization of parenthood in the context of the aptitude test. On the one hand the study focuses on how the concerned persons learn to normalize a relationship between parents and adoptee that is discursively and institutionally regarded as “extraordinary” and “unnatural”. On the other hand the author attends to the question of how governmental regulation is transformed into individual and familial self-management by the concerned families.

Abstract: The first part of the dissertation describes the history of local museums and the history of scientific research on the concept of Heimat. Not only historical and ethnographic studies are taken into account, but also sociological and anthropological theories which were formulated against the background of the debate on globalisation. In this way Heimat and locality are treated as equivalent terms. The second empirical part describes and analyses the local museums of the districts Köpenick, Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg and Neukölln in Berlin. The focus lies on the research on main and temporary exhibitions and the analysis of the role of material culture within the framework of the museums. This means the examination of both the thematic structuring of the exhibitions and the range of objects and their presentation. In the course of this material culture studies are taken into consideration. Coming from the first two parts a museum concept is formulated. This concept takes up the characteristics of the museums and adds the considerations on the terms Heimat and locality. In conclusion local museums are regarded as ethnographic museums which are able to reflect current social developments and discussions.
