    Abstract: Over the past few decades, there has been a significant amount of research on the Roman Lower Danube frontier by international teams focusing on individual forts or broader landscape survey work; collectively, this volume represents the best of this collaboration with the aim of elevating the Lower Danube within broader Roman frontier scholarship.The Lower Danube, running between Singidunum (modern Belgrade) and Halmyris in the Danube Delta, was one of the most densely fortified regions of the Roman Empire. The region has long been a border zone, today forming part of the border between Serbia and Romania, and the majority of the border between Romania and Bulgaria. Despite its importance for understanding both Roman frontier policy and the relationship between ancient and modern borderscapes, the region has not yet made its full contribution to international Roman scholarship. Bridging the theoretical divide that exists between different regional research traditions, chapters in this volume focus on sites like Ratiaria, in modern north-western Bulgaria, while other contributors examine the complex landscape from a wider perspective oriented around roads, temporary camps, or early Christian sites.     Abstract: From Hydrology to Hydroarchaeology in the Ancient Mediterranean: An interdisciplinary approach is devoted to the study of water management in ancient cities. It compares the approaches and methods adopted by researchers from different disciplinary sectors to identify the water conditions of past societies and to highlight the measures they have taken to adapt to their water resources. Deriving from an interdisciplinary meeting held in Aix-en-Provence (Mediterranean House of Human Sciences) in 2019, it brings together seven articles that present the innovative results of collaborations between archaeologists and environmental scientists, geologists, geomorphologists, and climatologists in particular. After an introduction that situates the discussions conducted in Aix-en-Provence within the framework of the Watertraces project, funded by the A*Midex foundation (Aix-Marseille University), most of the articles focus on the Sicilian situation. An initial synthesis covers all aspects of the question, followed by four case studies ranging from the 4th century BC to the 1st century AD. Die bisherigen Experimente haben gezeigt, dass sich die Gebrauchsspuren in drei Gruppen einteilen lassen, die wichtige Hinweise auf die Art der Bewegung oder die Handhabung und damit auf das bearbeitete Material geben.     Abstract: The study of Roman urbanism – especially its early (Republican) phases – is extensively rooted in the evidence provided by a series of key sites, several of them located in Italy. Some of these Italian towns (e.g. Fregellae, Alba Fucens, Cosa) have received a great deal of scholarly attention in the past and they are routinely referenced as textbook examples, framing much of our understanding of the broad phenomenon of Roman urbanism. However, discussions of these sites tend to fall back on well-established interpretations, with relatively little or no awareness of more recent developments. This is remarkable, since our understanding of these sites has since evolved thanks to new archaeological fieldwork, often characterised by the pursuit of new questions and the application of new approaches. Similarly, new evidence from other sites has since prompted a reconsideration of time-honoured views about the nature, role and long-term trajectory of Roman towns in Italy. Tracing its origins in the Laurence Seminar on Roman Urbanism in Italy: recent discoveries and new directions, which took place at the Faculty of Classics of the University of Cambridge (27–28 May 2022), this volume brings together scholars whose recent work at key sites is contributing to expand, change or challenge our current knowledge and understanding of Roman urbanism in Italy.     Abstract: This open access book brings together key issues from transformative processes and events across Europe (and in some cases beyond) from 15,000 to 1 BCE. This volume covers the research output produced by the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1266 "Scales of Transformation" – the first interdisciplinary centre to diachronically investigate transformations in past societies with a summary of their individual aspects from the Late Palaeolithic to the Roman Period. Following the introduction, the book is divided into three main sections: In "Identification of anatomies of socio-environmental transformation", the concept of scales of transformations is first explained, and the various parameters of transformational change are identified.     Abstract: Why are some things valuable while others are not? How much effort does it take to produce valuable objects? How can one explain the different appraisal of certain things in different temporal horizons and in different cultures? Cultural processes on how value is attached to things, and how value is re-established, are still little understood.〈br/〉〈br/〉The case studies in this volume, originating from anthropology and archaeology, provide innovative and differentiated answers to these questions. However, for all contributions there are some common basic assumptions. One of these concerns the understanding that it is rarely the value of the material itself that matters for high valuation, but rather the appreciation of the (assumed or constructed) origin of certain objects or their connection with certain social structures. A second of these shared insights addresses the ubiquity of phenomena of 'value in things'. There is no society without valued objects. As a rule, valuation is something negotiated or even disputed. Value arises through social action, whereby it is always necessary to ask anew which actors are interested in the value of certain objects (or in their appreciation). This also works the other way round: Who are those actors who question corresponding objective values and why?

But despite the lack of trenches, camps and enclosures, other traces of army life and organization are preserved. In this chapter, it is suggested that the so-called garrison in the Viking-era city of Birka, Sweden, constitutes an interesting counterpart to the camps. Despite the differences between them, not least in terms of temporality and relation to the surrounding region, a more detailed comparison of the archaeological source material also shows important similarities. The structural and material remains of the garrison are here put into context and questions are raised concerning differences in opportunities and needs for a martial organisation operating at home compared to the challenges facing an army acting away from home

The book seeks to define the conditions to create an active experience of the archaeological site, through “staging” strategies that consider space as the place of representation in which the transposition occurs, in a certain sense magical, from the plane of reality to its imaginary and conversely. The action on the archaeological site, therefore, is called upon to give structure and form to an idea that acts on the heritage, seeking the ability to dialogue with the context or to redesign it, in order to elaborate a representation that gives life to a narrative. The volume proposes a reflection on the approach to the contemporary use of archaeological heritage, through the reading and analysis of relevant European case studies, in which the definition of visual devices, pathways, covers and forms of reuse makes it possible to perceive and experience what no longer exists, also through the three-dimensional representation of the gap.     Abstract: This volume presents theoretical ideas, case studies, and reflective insights on community archaeology across the Middle East, with contributions by scholars working in and from Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Palestine, and Syria. The chapters represent a multitude of insights from contemporary public archaeology practice—drawing on theoretical frameworks and discussing the realities of challenges and opportunities presented by opening up archaeological experiences to wider publics in different social and political settings. In particular, the volume focuses on the following three themes: (1) defining and reflecting on ‘community’ in community archaeology; (2) which archaeologies to employ in community archaeology; and (3) measuring the success and failure of community archaeology. In addressing these issues, the chapters reflect different historical trajectories and cultures that enable us to find similarities and differences in the theory and practice of community archaeology.     Abstract: Dogs, Past and Present: An Interdisciplinary Perspective contributions from scholars from a variety of disciplines to provide a comprehensive assessment of the importance of dogs through history. Over the last decades, countless studies have examined the lives of dogs and their current place in our societies as well as their crucial part in human life and history. Data and hypotheses have progressively increased, sometimes controversially, in each field of investigation. The domestication of dogs and its success during prehistory is a fascinating theme that scholars of various disciplines are involved with. However, there has not been a real exchange between those approaches and it is extremely complex to reach a complete view of the thousands of texts which are published every year. By contrast, this volume is entirely dedicated to dogs and it is focused on the necessity of an ‘interdisciplinary perspective’ to fully understand the fundamental role that dogs have played in our past. When, where, how and why were dogs domesticated? What is their story? What was their role in the history of humankind? What is their role in traditional and non-traditional societies today?     Abstract: Cette monographie présente les résultats de la fouille archéologique préventive menée en 2013-2014 sur le site de l’ancienne Gare routière de Clermont-Ferrand. Le secteur concerné par l’opération correspond au fond de vallée de la Tiretaine du Sud, en périphérie de la ville antique d’Augustonemetum. Il s’agit d’une zone marécageuse qui est investie à la fin du ier siècle ou au tout début du iie siècle, lors d’une première phase d’expansion de l’agglomération. Deux bâtiments sont alors construits, dont une auberge, établie en rive gauche d’un bras de la Tiretaine traversant l’emprise d’est en ouest. À la fin du iie siècle, la canalisation du cours d’eau assure un meilleur drainage du quartier, qui connaît un développement spectaculaire. L’auberge est agrandie, des locaux artisanaux sont installés en rive droite et, au nord, une maison à cour centrale est construite au sein d’une parcelle allongée, dont la configuration traduit indirectement la pression foncière qui s’exerce sur le quartier. Dès la fin du iiie siècle, le tiers sud de l’emprise de fouille est abandonné suite aux crues répétées du cours d’eau. L’auberge est profondément remodelée et change probablement de fonction. Cet édifice est à nouveau modifié durant le ive siècle, mais le mauvais état de conservation des vestiges de cette période ne permet pas d’en déterminer la nature. Après une longue phase d’abandon, le secteur n’est réoccupé qu’à partir du milieu du xve siècle. Le terrain est alors divisé en parcelles cultivées qui peuvent être identifiées à des vignes qui témoignent du développement d’une agriculture spéculative aux portes de la ville. Grâce à l’importante superficie explorée (4 500 m²) et à d’excellentes conditions de conservation, les fouilles de l’ancienne Gare routière ont livré une documentation extrêmement riche. Cet ouvrage, qui rassemble les contributions de vingt chercheurs, en livre une synthèse permettant de retracer l’évolution d’un quartier dans son environnement naturel et urbain

    Abstract: The Viking as pirate is one of the oldest interpretational tropes connected with the predatory maritime activities of the Scandinavian peoples between c.750-1050 CE. Over the past decade, however, this has gained new theoretical force through comparisons with paradigms of piracy drawn from later times and contexts, embracing the concept of hydrarchies and the notion of pirate communities as forming discrete social worlds. With their regional bases on the great rivers of Frankia, and the many winter camps of the British Isles, there is also another sense in which the Vikings prefigure the Early Modern pirates, in creating physical embodiments of their lifestyle by building special kinds of safe havens. Places like the Republic of Pirates in the Bahamas (1706-1718), and several others, were consciously politicised and modelled on the utopian communities created by writers such as Francis Bacon, Henry Neville, and of course, Thomas More. It is in this context that the chapter explores the archaeology of Viking camps: the mobile, multiethnic ‘armies’ which occupied them, their strategic interactions with local populations, and the workings of what anarchist thinkers have termed ‘temporary autonomous zones’

    Abstract: Growing Up in the Cis-Baikal Region of Siberia, Russia analyses the dietary life histories of prehistoric hunter-gatherers from six cemeteries in the Lake Baikal region of Siberia, Russia. The overarching goal was to better understand how they lived by examining what they ate, how they utilized the landscape, and how this changed over time. Recent archaeological advances offer new ways to gain insight into the lives of people who died many years ago. With the application of biochemistry, archaeologists can study an individual’s dietary choices from the time they were born up until the last few months of life, providing a fuller picture of how people lived, the challenges they may have faced, and the choices they made. This study tests the application of a technique known as dentine micro-sampling, in which the inner part of a tooth is sectioned into thin strips, each representing roughly nine months of development. These strips were subjected to stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis, unveiling the chemical markers of different foods. The results show that the dietary contribution of terrestrial and aquatic food sources varied within and between cemeteries and cultural periods, which can be viewed as evidence of dietary independence among groups occupying the same area. The results also show that the movement of these individuals around the Lake Baikal region is observable in the chemical markers from their teeth. In conjunction with other methods, dentine micro-sampling helps us understand the interplay of personal choice and ecological constraint that makes up the dietary behaviour of these prehistoric peoples

    Abstract: This book examines property rights, settlement structure and social organization in Norway’s Østlandet in the Iron age (500 BC–AD 1050). Inspired by ethnographical and anthropological studies, a model of a stateless, agrarian and hierarchical society with socially based rights to land is presented. In this model, where there are no territorially embedded rights, society is better represented as a heterarchy or anarchy than as a hierarchy. Power in society was shared between the honoured warrior, the powerless leader and perhaps also the productive farmer. This model differs from that presented by standard Norwegian research, where the retrogressive method is combined with a belief in the stability and continuity of the farm. A critical study of Norwegian research history is therefore an essential part of this book. This study has also been able to make use of new and extensive settlement evidence gained from machine-stripping of topsoil from large areas in the past thirty years; this has shed new light on the issues discussed in the book related to building practices and the settlement pattern

    Abstract: Along the coast of the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, there are numerous remains linked to the manufacture of purple dyes. This study focuses on the site of Torregarcía (Almería, Spain), located in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, a protected coastal area of particular ecological interest. Torregarcía was initially excavated during 1980s and was identified as a Roman salting factory where the complementary activity of dyeing was also practised. Despite its importance, it has gone unnoticed in the historiography of the last three decades and has never been the subject of dedicated scientific publication. The investigations presented in this book have been carried out using non-invasive prospecting techniques, such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and have revealed the importance of the exploitation of purple dye as the main site activity. More complex installations associated with the excavated structures and a large shell pit are also described. Alongside these, other buildings and shells have also been documented along the coastline of this site. All of this forms what we call the "purple landscape" in the southeast of the peninsular coast, which allows the Natural Park to show archaeological heritage beyond any excavations carried out to date

    Abstract: The chapter traces Gimbutas’ engagement with gender as a research topic, proposing that her work on European prehistory should be seen as written from a feminist point of view. It explains her contributions to rewriting prehistory from a women-centered perspective, her reinterpretations of female symbolism in early figurative art, and her implicit critique of the androcentric narratives of the development of Western civilization. It discusses also Gimbutas’ scholarly persona and the way she combined aspects of an Enlightenment ideal of disinterested perspective with a Romantic notion of scholarly discovery as divine inspiration, which she expressed through reference to the Lithuanian folk figure of a witch – the Ragana. The chapter analyzes the critiques of Gimbutas’ work and places them within the context of the changing paradigms of the discipline of archaeology. It shows how the introduction of post-structuralist feminist approaches to archaeology changed the way scholars perceive the question of gender in prehistory and, by extension, Gimbutas’ work. It positions Gimbutas’ works on Old Europe at the cultural moment of women’s liberation in the U.S., and shows the effect that they had on feminist audiences in the 1970s and the 1980s. The chapter discusses the relationship between the Goddess movement and Gimbutas, demonstrating that by the late 1980s Gimbutas was familiar with radical feminist views. The chapter focuses on the construction of an image of Eastern Europe and other European margins in Gimbutas’ work and the narrative of victimization by the Soviet Union and modernity in general. It shows how the Eastern European Lithuania folk traditions became an attractive source of spirituality for the Goddess movement, as it could be seen as European, and a part of Western cultural heritage, without the guilt of colonialism and imperialism. The chapter instead proposes to consider the history of nationalism and the idealization of the peasant culture in Eastern Europe and to interpret Gimbutas’ Old Europe as a negotiation of European belonging by marginalized Eastern European nations

    Abstract: This volume collects the proceedings of the meeting held in September 2021 at the Archaeological Museum of Stabia Libero D'Orsi, organized by the Scuola Superiore Meridionale di Napoli and the Archaeological Park of Pompeii. The focus on the ancient city of Stabiae combines the evidence found on the tufa ridge of Varano with what is preserved in the modern city of Castellammare, the ancient city's port that survived the Plinian eruption. Two different Institutions protect the area: the Archaeological Park of Pompeii is in charge of the ancient villas and the Museum at the Quisisana Royal Palace, while the Superintendence for the Metropolitan Area of Naples takes care of the archaeological evidence of the territory. The seminar sought to unite these two perspectives and it was focused on creating a common space for researchers working in the area, in order to share data and hypotheses and discuss the field activities and the project of a new archaeological park, that must find in the Archaeological Museum of Stabia a narrative hub
    Abstract: Il volume raccoglie gli atti di un incontro di studi organizzato, nel settembre del 2021, presso il Museo archeologico di Stabia Libero D'Orsi dalla Scuola Superiore Meridionale e dal Parco Archeologico di Pompei. Il racconto sull'antica città di Stabiae nasce dall'unione delle testimonianze del costone tufaceo di Varano a quanto si conserva immerso nella continuità di vita di Castellammare, già area di approdo della vecchia città e successivamente porto sopravvissuto all'eruzione pliniana e anzi potenziato dalla distruzione di Pompei. Due archeologie diverse si confrontano, dunque, tra Castellammare e Gragnano e due enti diversi le tutelano: il Parco archeologico di Pompei si occupa delle ville sepolte e del Museo presso il Quisisana, la Soprintendenza per l'area metropolitana di Napoli si prende cura delle testimonianze di archeologia urbana e territoriale. Il seminario ha cercato di unire le due prospettive e l'incontro è stato funzionale anche a creare uno spazio comune di aggiornamento per i ricercatori che operano sul territorio, indipendentemente dalla loro appartenenza istituzionale o provenienza per poter condividere dati, ipotesi, per riflettere sulla ripresa degli scavi e sulla progettazione di un nuovo parco stabiano unitario che trovi nel Museo un hub narrativo

    Abstract: Writing does not begin and end with the encoding of an idea into a group of symbols. It is practiced by people who have learnt its principles and acquired the tools and skills for doing it, in a particular context that affects what they do and how they do it. Nor are these practices static, as those involved exploit opportunities to adapt old features and develop new ones. The act of writing then has tangible and visible consequences not only for the writers but also for those encountering what has been produced, whether they can read its content or not – with potential for a wider social visibility that can in turn affect the success and longevity of the writing system itself. With a focus on the syllabic systems of the Bronze Age Aegean, this book attempts to bring together different perspectives to create an innovative interdisciplinary outlook on what is involved in writing: from structuralist views of writing as systems of signs with their linguistic values, to archaeological and anthropological approaches to writing as a socially grounded practice. The main chapters focus on the concepts of script adoption and adaptation; different methods of logographic writing; and the vitality of writing traditions, with repercussions for the modern world.     Abstract: In a rigorous and innovative study, Thomas R. Rocek examines the 150-year-old ethnohistorical and archaeological record of Navajo settlement on Black Mesa in northern Arizona. Rocek's study, the first of its kind, not only reveals a rich array of interacting factors that have helped to shape Navajo life during this period but also constructs a valuable case study in archaeological method and theory, certain to be useful to other researchers of nonurban societies. Rocek explores a neglected but major source of social flexibility in these societies. While many studies have focused on household and community-level organization, few have examined the flexible, intermediate-sized, "middle-level" cooperative units that bind small groups of households together. Middle-level units, says the author, must be recognized as important sources of social flexibility in many such cultural contexts. Futhermore, attention to middle-level units is critical for understanding household or community-level organization, because the flexibility they offer can fundamentally alter the behavior of social units of a larger or smaller scale. In examining the archaeological record of Navajo settlement, Rocek develops archaeological methods for examing multiple-household social units (variously called "outfits or "cooperating groups") through spatial analysis, investigates evidence of change in middle-level units over time, relates these changes to economic and demographic flux, and compares the Navajo case study to the broader ethnographic literature of middle-level units. Rocek finds similarities with social organization in non-unilineally organized societies, in groups that have been traditionally described as characterized by network organization, and particularly in pastoral societies. The results of Rocek's study offer a new perspective on variability in Navajo social organization while suggesting general patterns of the response of social groups to change. Rocek's work will be of significant interest not only to those with a professional interest in Navajo history and culture, but also, for its methodological insights, to a far broader range of archaeologists, social anthropologists, ethnohistorians, ethnoarchaeologists, historians, cultural geographers, and political scientists

    Abstract: From 1984 to 1999, the French archaeological mission of Kition, under the supervision of Marguerite Yon, conducted extensive excavations to the north of the Bamboula sanctuary. These excavations revealed the remains of shipsheds of the Classical period, among the best preserved in the Mediterranean, which opened to the north on a closed harbour basin. This book offers a detailed and cross-cutting study of this outstanding discovery: the building is contextualized in its paleoenvironment (both at the local and regional levels), the chronology of its different phases is established, its architecture is carefully described and restored for the missing parts (superstructure). Finally, we assess the importance of this military harbour for the history of Kition, Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, at the time of the Classical kingdom (4th century BC) and at the beginning of the Hellenistic period. The volume is completed by a study of the ceramics from the Roman period discovered in the filling of the basin. This includes both specific places such as Athens and Rome, but also an instantly recognizable style of urbanism wrought in marble and lived in by teeming tunic-clad crowds. Selective and misleading this vision may be, but it speaks to the continuing importance these ancient cities have had in the centuries that followed and the extent to which they define the period in subsequent memory. Although there is much that is mysterious about them, the cities of the Roman Mediterranean are, for the most part, historically known. That the names and pasts of these cities remain known to us is the product of an extraordinary process of remembering and forgetting stretching back to antiquity that took place throughout the former Roman world. This volume tackles this subject of the survival and transformation of the ancient city through memory, drawing upon the methodological and theoretical lenses of memory studies and resilience theory to view the way the Greco-Roman city lived and vanished for the generations that separate the present from antiquity.This book analyzes the different ways in which urban communities of the post-Antique world have tried to understand and relate to the ancient city on their own terms, examining it as a process of forgetting as well as remembering.     Abstract: Research on hunting and gathering peoples has given anthropologists a long-standing conceptual framework of sedentism and mobility based on seasonality and ecological constraints. This work challenges that position by arguing that mobility is a socially negotiated activity and that neither mobility nor sedentism can be understood outside of its social context. Drawing on research in the Mesa Verde region that focuses on communities and households, Mark Varien expands the social, spatial, and temporal scales of archaeological analysis to propose a new model for population movement. Rather than viewing sedentism and mobility as opposing concepts, he demonstrates that they were separate strategies that were simultaneously employed. Households moved relatively frequently--every one or two generations--but communities persisted in the same location for much longer. Varien shows that individuals and households negotiated their movements in a social landscape structured by these permanent communities. Varien's research clearly demonstrates the need to view agriculturalists from a perspective that differs from the hunter-gatherer model. This innovative study shows why current explanations for site abandonment cannot by themselves account for residential mobility and offers valuable insights into the archaeology of small-scale agriculture
