Abstract: The experimental documentary reflects the encounter between West African and European/Western culture, introducing Europeans who lived in West Africa for some years. It shows situations on the streets, tells stories, collects materials and impressions from journeys of the film maker to Ghana, Benin and Senegal. Gisa, who lived with her daughter Madita in Burkina Faso for several years, recalls moments of closeness and foreignness. The most trusted things can sometimes appear grotesque, sometimes poeticized in a foreign environment. Images and stories of a potential fascination and longing for the Other contrast with the question whether a contact to the foreign is possible at all. The film was shot on super-8 and mini-DV. The material effects and the alternation between vivid shots and quasi timeless picturesque scenes occasionaly create a blur between imagination and plain everyday life.

Abstract: Documentary on traditional medicine in Mozambique. Healers from the north (matrilinear) and the south (patrilinear) show and explain their treatment of psychosocial illnesses. The film facilitates a better understanding of the traditional African healing system to promote the exchange with modern medicine and to establish a working, culturally adapted socialmedical health care and prevention in Mozambique. This is especially needed for AIDS prevention. The film tries to encourage the recently started dialogue between tradition and modernity.

Abstract: Im Jahr 1993 trafen sich in Südäthiopien Vertreter der Arbore, Borana, Konso, Tsamai, Hamar and Dasanech, um Frieden zu schließen.
Abstract: In 1993, in southern Ethiopia, the Arbore, Borana, Konso, Tsamai, Hamar and Dasanech met to make peace. Anthropologists from the South Omo Research Center witnessed the event, and Alula Pankhurst filmed the debates. One spear from each group was brought, placed on the ground, blunted and then broken. After the instruments for war were destroyed, tools of peace were given to all participants. In 2002, anthropologists Ivo Strecker and Jean Lydall returned, following an invitation by Grazmatch Surra. He had a message that he wanted them to bring to the whole world: Bloodshed dishonours not only the people of southern Ethiopia but all people wherever they live on earth, and poverty and sickness ultimately derive from the wilful spilling of human blood. These and similar ideas are developed by Grazmatch Surra in a series of spellbinding conversations. His son, Horra, returns to the sites where the original peace ceremony took place and explains the historic events.

Abstract: In 1998, the discovery of a gold mine in the village of V3 Dimouon in the province of Loba, Burkina Faso, initiated a veritable "gold rush". In the village, where Mossi and Dagara farmers co-reside, the arrival of thousands of gold-diggers led to the creation of a new settlement named "Sanmatenga", which in Mooré means "land of gold". The village people as well as the representative of the gold-diggers recount the discovery of the gold vein. The film follows the different steps of exploiting the gold and shows everyday life in Sanmatenga.

Abstract: The film focuses on peace-making efforts by seven different ethnic groups in Southern Ethiopia to end years of war between each other. Delegations of elders come together to jointly curse war, bless peace and never to fight with one another again. Curses are uttered as spears are blunted with stones and then carried to a termite mound to be broken and left there for the ants to devour. After the instruments of war are destroyed, tools of peace are given to all participants. Holding their tools of peace, the elders chant in union, calling forth the peace they desire.

Abstract: When the level of Lake Chad sank during the 1970s, a wide strip of fertile land was exposed on the Nigerian shore. A considerable number of villages sprang up on the banks of the former lake and peoples of various origins settled there. In the dry Sahel zone the waters of Lake Chad offer fishermen, farmers and tradesmen the prospect of a good income the whole year round. While some still only dream of making easy money, others have laid the foundations of a secure livelihood. The film shows daily life in two villages on the shores of Lake Chad, focussing on four entrepreneurs - two women and two men - each one successfully conducting business in his or her own way.

Abstract: Duka, a married woman and mother of five young children, lives in Hamar, Southern Ethiopia. Ever since her husband married a beautiful and young second wife, Duka has been in a state of emotional turmoil. Among the Hamar, men are allowed to marry more than one wife, but only a few men ever do so. Duka wonders why her husband married again; did he find her too old, or was he repelled by her chronic malaria? Also, she doesn't know what to make of the new wife who is silent and never expresses her feelings except in rage? And on top of this, her mother-in-law keeps making trouble. Personal and intimate, the film follows the drama of this family in crisis, the high points of which are the birth of the new wife's first child, and nine months later, a heated dispute between the mother-in-law and her son, which leads to the building of a new house. Duka, her husband, her mother-in-law and the second wife voice their different points of view as events proceed and the crisis finally gets resolved.

Abstract: The film, being part of the continued effort of IWF to contribute video productions to the history of anthropology like the preceding film on Sir Raymond Firth, is a portrait of the Norwegian anthropologist Fredrik Barth, one of the most important contemporary representatives of his discipline whose reputation both as a fieldworker and a theoretician has been renowned for more than four decades. Barth carried out fieldwork in the Sudan, in Iran, Oman, Pakistan, New Guinea, Bali and Bhutan. In the film, he talks, at times together with his wife Unni Wikan, to Peter Loizos and also to Lone Abenth-Sperschneider on his personal life and academic career, the importance of his fieldwork for his theoretical findings, the development of Norwegian anthropology, his cooperation with Unni Wikan and many other topics of interest for anthropologists. Impressions from teaching students in Bergen and lecturing at the Museum of Ethnography in Oslo, as well as glimpses of his personal environment in Oslo round off the film to a vivid portrait of a remarkable anthropologist.

Abstract: As among other East African pastoralists, in Hamar the good fortune of a man, his family and his herds is thought to be determined by the fate of his favorite ox. To glorify his ox, a man composes a special song and sings it whenever he attends a dance. Prominent in the film are Choke, a Hamar man, who provides insight into the meaning of the songs, and Gardu, a Hamar woman, who explains the choreography of the dances.

Abstract: Eight years after her stay among the Hamar of Ethiopia together with her parents (anthropologists), Kaira Strecker remembers her life there and the days with her Hamar girl-friend Shawa. Apart from playing, helping the Hamar women was most important: grinding sorghum, preparing various meals from sorghum flour, fetching water, milking the goats. By mixing original shots from 1983 with interview scenes from 1991 the film documents the two girls' friendship and at the same time describes everyday life of women and children in Hamar.

Abstract: Foutura Sib spricht mit Binaté Kambou über ihr Leben als Töpferin.

Abstract: Seit seiner Geburt wurde der Fabrikarbeiter Kanyi vom Mami Wata-Geist geplagt.

Abstract: The Tsama-melon plays a key role in the life of the G/wi. For some months of the year the melon is the main provider of water and their seeds are an important source of food. Women collect the melons and harvest their seed in the fields. For consumation the seeds are roasted in hot ashes and sand, then they are ground in a mortar. The resulting powder can be eaten without further preparation. To squench the thirst the meat of the melon is eaten. Sometimes it is squashed with the end of the digging stick inside the melon, which serves as a container, from which the Bushmen drink the pulp.

Abstract: Among the Azande, salt is traditionally obtained from plant ashes. The plants are cut and laid out to dry. They are later burned with palm leaf ribs and later also with infruchtescence and inflorescence of an oil palm in a wood fire. A filter funnel is constructed; the cooled ashes are put into the filter, and water is poured over it. The salty water drips through for hours. Subsequently it is evaporated, and the paste produced is dried in the sun.

Abstract: Among the Azande, bitter manioc has been planted since colonial times. After the harvest, the tubers are peeled and soaked in water. To prepare manioc flour, they are dried in the sun, ground in a wooden mortar and sieved. To prepare flat manioc cakes, the peeled tubers are ground in mortars and slapped against the wall of the house in small portions to dry. Neither method of manioc processing results in a complete evaporation of the cyanic acid being produced.

Abstract: Several variants of a melon-game dance which developed spontaneously are documented. Two girls exercise the game. They attract several adult women who join in, and a perfect melonball dance developes. Women standing behind each other form a circle. One woman holding a melon leaves the circles to perform a variety of figures and finally throws the melon to the woman following her while she returns to the circle of clapping and chanting women. The sequence of events ends with a round dance. The women form a circle and while the group dances a melon passes from one dancer to the other. Each dancer throws the melon backwards over her shoulder to the dancer following her.

Abstract: Am 8.
Abstract: Among the Ewe of Southeast Ghana, eight days after the birth of a child family-members, friends and neighbours gather for the ceremony of outdooring. The outdooring of a newborn child implies that everyone should become acquainted with the existance of the new human being as a new member of a perticular family, and, at the same time, is meant to introduce the child to its new conditions of human life. The ritual, therefore, includes a number of basic experiences which the midwife who helped the child come to life is "showing" to the baby: feeding of basic foodstuffs like maize, palmoil and salt, the touching of earth, the feeling of water, air, light, sun, the acquaintance with physical danger yet also with one's own physical strength. Bathing, dressing and carrying-on-back are symbols for the uppermost importance of body-hygiene in a person's life and of "being carried, being held", with its double meaning: mother's back stands for membership and protection in the community, especially in one's own families.

Abstract: Procedures for the preparation of injera, the typical flat bread of the Amharic population in Ethiopia. Injera is made of Tef, a fine-grained sort of local cereals. To prepare injera, a leaven has to be produced first. The dough is poured on a heatened stone-plate, like a pancake, sealed with a cover and needs about 5 minutes baking-time. Injera is a soft, greyish bread with slightly sour taste. The film document was taken in a Weyto-village. The Weytos are Sudanese refugees, who entered Ethiopia during the Mahdi-rebellion in the last century.

Abstract: Papyrus boats of small size, like the one shown in the film, are generally used for fishing at Lake Tana. The boats suck water and stark to sink during use. They have to be dried after each ride. Having been in use for about half a year, a boat must be exchanged. The technique of building a boat is comparatively simple. A first bundle of papyrus-shrubs is formed and lengthened by further short bundles to reach the presumed boatlength. This bundle (the keel) is stiffened by a wooden stick. Then, more bundles are added successively on both sides (each bundle has to be lengthened again and is tightened to the forgoing bundle). Gradually the boat's sides rise. Before the bow and the stern of the boat are tightened, the bundles are pruned ro reduce the odd shrubs. To keep the easy collapsible plait in a "Boat"-form, an extra thick bundle is pressed into the interior space. This bundle is also used as a seat.

Abstract: By massage and rubbing with a handful of fibrous material from the inner bark of a particular plant the practitioner "extracts" the disease from the thorax of a woman in the form of small splinters of bone. In this way he removes altogether 11 small splinters, preventing them afterwards from getting back to the woman's upper body by anointing it with healing oil. In order to detect the guilty person, i. e. the person having caused the disease by special spiritual powers and abilities, the practitioner carries out a sand-oracle, which reveals the husband's mistress as responsible for the illness.

Abstract: A man named Yassi makes a tool djo. For this purpose he requires a stick about six metres long and four flat pieces of wood which he splits off from a suitable tree in the forest. In the camp he shapes the pieces of wood, tapers one end off to a point. He then splits one end of the long stick into four pieces, inserts the pieces of wood into the openings, and ties the whole so as to form a funnel. Two girls then take the finished tool and go out into the forest. They discover an esouma plant, which has a root going up to six metres into the ground, and they dig out the root piece by piece by use of the funnel. Back in the camp the girls prepare the roots to eat.
