    Abstract: "Between 1600 and 1750 Ottoman Turkish music differentiated itself from an older Persianate art music and developed the genres antecedent to modern Turkish art music. Based on a translation of Demetrius Cantemir's seminal "Book of the Science of Music" from the early eighteenth century, this work is the first to bring together contemporaneous notations, musical treatises, literary sources, travellers' accounts and iconography. These present a synthetic picture of the emergence of Ottoman composed and improvised instrumental music. A detailed comparison of items in the notated Collections of Cantemir and of Bobowski-from fifty years earlier-together with relevant treatises, reveal key aspects of modality, melodic progression and rhythmic structures

    Abstract: "Reform, Notation and Ottoman music in Early 19th Century Istanbul presents the first complete set of transcription and edition of Euterpe (1830) from Byzantine neumatic notation into the modified staff notation used by classical Turkish music and is accompanied by a substantial examination of the related historical, theoretical and musical topics. Through a series of Ottoman/Turkish classical vocal music compositions that can be dated to 18th and 19th centuries, Euterpe and related sources reinforce a much broader picture of musical practice and transmission in which we clearly see that the Greek and Turkish traditions are linked. Reform, Notation and Ottoman music in Early 19th Century Istanbul is presented in two parts: historical discussion and musical analysis, and complete transcription and edition of Euterpe. This book will appeal to music scholars and university students interested in minorities, cosmopolitanism in the Middle East and Balkans, the relationship between music and national identity, musical notation, classical Ottoman/Turkish music, Byzantine music, and, most significantly, ethnomusicology"--

    Abstract: Kurt Reinhard ist einer der bedeutendsten Musikwissenschaftler und Ethnomusikologen, der die Notwendigkeit der transkulturellen Kommunikation frühzeitig erkannte und sich zusammen mit seiner Frau Ursula Reinhard tatkräftig für deren Verwirklichung einsetzte. Beide Leben belegen eindrucksvoll diesen Einsatz. Musikologische Feldforschungen in der Türkei (1955-1993) bildeten die Grundlage einer umfangreichen Sammlung von Quellenmaterialien zur Türkei. Darauf aufbauend entstanden einschlägige systematische und ethnomusikologische Studien, unter anderem zu Musikinstrumenten, zu âşık-Liedern, zur Roma-Musik, zur Geschichte der türkischen Volks- und Kunstmusik. Neben den Grundlagenforschungen und einschlägigen Studien war das Forscher-Ehepaar zugleich bestrebt, den deutsch-türkischen Kulturdialog zu fördern und die transkulturelle Verständigung zu verbessern. Der vorliegende Band bezweckt, das ethnomusikologische Wirken, die Lebensläufe und Bibliographien des Ehepaares Reinhard möglichst umfassend zu dokumentieren und die Verdienste um eine über fünfzigjährige Wirkungs- und Entwicklungsgeschichte, nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zur Jahrhundertwende, im Kontext der Vergleichenden Musikwissenschaft zu würdigen.

    Abstract: "This project is the first book length study of the ney, the Sufi reed flute long associated with Islam and disdained after the establishment of the Turkish Republic. Based on extensive field research and an apprentice-style method of inquiry, the book explores the remarkable revival of ney-playing among urban dwellers in Turkey today: in Istanbul and other urban centers, and in a plethora of new pedagogical sites ranging from private ney studios to cultural and religious associations, from university clubs to local mosque organizations. The author, Banu Şenay, documents the lifelong preparation required to become a skilled practitioner of the ney, examining in particular the transformative power of this Islamic art pedagogy to cultivate new aesthetic and ethical perceptions in learners. Şenay's ethnography shows how the learning process transcends musical technique, entailing not only an embodied, sensory disciplining of the body, but socialization of learners into new ways of being as well as into new ways of relating to other selves. Exploring firsthand the practical process of musical teaching and learning, together with its ethical scaffolding, the book has theoretical implications for scholars studying many forms of apprentice-style learning. It also helps redress the underdeveloped understandings and often-polemical claims made in both the media and by Islamophobic discourse concerning processes by which Muslims develop a religious and moral sense"--

    Abstract: The book describes the confusing, contradictory and individualized musicscape in Turkey around the turn of the twenty-first century, including its prehistory throughout the twentieth century and sometimes beyond. Its focus lies on the recent tendency towards a disintegration of musical traditions into internationalism and multiple musical hybrids which might be described as a process of individualization. The category of individual as used here includes individual musicians, individual music pieces, individual life experiences, identities and approaches to music, individual musical projects, individual CDs and concerts, even individual concepts of music theory, conferences or research projects. Several factors lead to this development: A growing rate and importance of migration and international mobility; the increase of cross-cultural encounters and experiences; the availability of almost all Ottoman-Turkish, Anatolian and global musical styles, instruments and other musical elements via media; the opening up of identity discourses. A final chapter is intended as a reflection on the question of how this unprecedented musical expansion could have happened within an authoritarian state and society such as the Republic of Turkey.

The book breaks new ground by examining both the creative and destructive forces at play in the making of modern Turkey and by addressing the overwhelming frictions during this profound transformation and their long-term consequences.     Abstract: This book offers a range of trajectories of academic thought and musical practice in Turkey. It adopts a multidisciplinary approach, with chapters exploring the question posed by its title from the perspectives of ethnomusicology, historical musicology, neurology, psychology, social science, gender studies, acoustics, and linguistics. Some studies are experimental and scientific in nature, ranging from a friends focus on tonality, using EEG to investigate differences in the cognitive responses of musicians and non-musicians listening to tonal and atonal chords, to an examination of brain activation in response to reverberation time differences resulting from room acoustics. Another essay assesses the psychometric properties and effectiveness of the new Turkish version of the Music Performance Anxiety Inventory for Adolescents (MPAI-A), designed to survey performance anxiety and determine its severity in adolescent musicians. On a completely different tack, two studies investigate Turkey's heavy metal scene. The first explores the social forces propelling the "moral panic" over Satanism and heavy metal, generated by the national press in response to a gory murder in the 1990s. Through field interviews, this study examines the impact of this on the public perception and stereotypes of metal fans, and its effects on the fans themselves. The second contribution examines gender codes within the global extreme metal scene, looking specifically at the barriers faced - and overcome - by female Turkish extreme metal musicians. Setting Turkish music practices today in their historical context, a further contribution offers a critical appraisal of the mission to "contemporize" music, expounded (though ineffectually carried out) by the founding ideologies of Early Republican Turkey.
    Abstract: A similar chapter discusses how even Anatolian folk music, when examined more closely, caused consternation, looking at the change in the Turkish state's attitude towards the multicultural structure of Anatolia during the last decade. The final article in this volume focuses on how Turkish musicians use the term "sound" - the English word, as borrowed in Turkish - to discuss elements of music. Beyond the physical meaning of the word, the essay explores the ways the word is used by musicians to describe the timbre of instruments, the production quality of recordings, the application of music technology, the aural aesthetics of an album, and the distinctive and unique elements of an artist's performance. - Firat Kutluk is a Professor of Musicology, and received his PhD on "Cultural Analysis of Popular Music in Turkey" in 1994. In addition to participating in various conferences, seminars and symposiums, he has presented a series of lectures on "New Music" and "Music and Politics". Between 1991 and 2009, he made a number of music programmes for broadcast, and has published the books Music History (1997) and Music and Politics (1997). He is currently Director of the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylul University and Principal of DABMER (Acoustic and Cognitive Musicology Research Centre). Ugur Turkmen graduated from Uludag University's Faculty of Education in 1993. He gained a Master's degree from the Department of Music Education of Selcuk University in 1996. In 2005, he received his doctorate from Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University's Department of Music Education, before becoming an Associate Professor of Musicology in 2010. He is currently the Director of Afyon Kocatepe University State Conservatory.

    Abstract: Music in contemporary Turkey is inextricably linked to the history of the Republic of Turkey and the complex histories of the Ottoman Empire and numerous other empires that preceded it. It is also an ideal avenue for introducing one of the most vibrant multicultural areas in the Middle East. Turkey is home to a rich variety of highly localized musical traditions--comprised of regional repertoires, instruments, performance practices, and dances--bound together by a strong sense of national identity. The first brief, stand-alone volume to explore the musical and cultural traditions of this region, Music in Turkey places the diverse sounds of the country (and the Middle East at large) in their social contexts. Author Eliot Bates employs four themes in his survey of Turkish music: the role of music in forming a national consciousness about local and regional cultures; how changes in musical meaning pertain to changes in contemporary Turkish society; the process of arrangement, where technology is creatively used to revitalize and modernize traditional music; and how today's Anatolian musical instrument performance and construction are linked to local, regional, and national identities.     Abstract: Die Menschheit erlebt aktuell die größte Völkerwanderung ihrer Geschichte. Ein Drittel der Weltbevölkerung zieht über Provinzen, Länder, Kontinente hinweg vom Land in die Städte. In unserer Zeit leben zum ersten Mal mehr Menschen in der Stadt als auf dem Land. Die These, dass diese radikale, unumkehrbare Entwicklung eine positive ist sowohl für die Migranten als auch für die Städte, in denen sie ankommen , setzt Saunders Buch von gern beschworenen Untergangsszenarien ab. Ob Migration funktioniert oder nicht, hat wenig mit kulturellen Klüften oder religiösen Gegensätzen zu tun. Die Ziele der Neuankömmlinge sind egal aus welchem Land sie stammen oder in welche Stadt sie gehen die gleichen. Doch ob sie Arbeit finden, soziale Netzwerke aufbauen, ihren Kindern Schulbildung und eine Zukunft ermöglichen können, hängt stark davon ab, ob die Stadt auf sie vorbereitet ist. Drei Jahre lang hat Saunders in Berlin-Kreuzberg, im Londoner East End und den Banlieues von Paris, in den Favelas von Rio de Janeiro und den Barrios in Los Angeles mit Menschen über ihre Lebenspläne und -wirklichkeiten gesprochen. Über zwanzig solcher Viertel, Rand- und Außenbezirke, diese Orte der Ankunft Arrival Citys, porträtiert Saunders in seinem Buch. Sein Fazit: Scheitert die Arrival City, wird sie zum sozialen Brennpunkt, zur Brutstätte von Kriminalität und hybridem Extremismus, zum Elendsviertel.     Abstract: For over three decades I had the opportunity to research on Ottoman musical writings in the Turkish libraries and to consult private collections. Concurrently, I was able to study Ottoman musical manuscripts kept in libraries outside Turkey. Along those years of research I carried out persistent investigations that gave me access to a large number of Ottoman materials ranging from the fifteenth century to the end of the nineteenth century. As a result of examining numerous musical manuscripts in Ottoman Turkish literature I discerned the commonplace of themes in the majority of writings and evaluated their structure at formal and generative level. Moreover, I was able to ascertain the significant purport of certain sources over others and to compare several versions of the texts. The idea of this catalogue evolved gradually in my mind from the perception that an explicit presentation of the makams would constitute a valuable reference both for evaluating the historical process of creating and performing music, as well as for establishing the inventory of modal categories and their taxonomic relations. As time passed, I was able to determine the development of a genuine Turkish concept in works that provided descriptive and analytical matter, and to detect through manuscript lines the significance of the process involving the semantics of the practice of music at different periods. The present book is mainly focused upon the practical theory of the makams reflected in the production and performance of the melodic scales the way they are described in Ottoman manuscripts.

    Abstract: For over three decades I had the opportunity to research on Ottoman musical writings in the Turkish libraries and to consult private collections. Concurrently, I was able to study Ottoman musical manuscripts kept in libraries outside Turkey. Along those years of research I carried out persistent investigations that gave me access to a large number of Ottoman materials ranging from the fifteenth century to the end of the nineteenth century. As a result of examining numerous musical manuscripts in Ottoman Turkish literature I discerned the commonplace of themes in the majority of writings and evaluated their structure at formal and generative level. Moreover, I was able to ascertain the significant purport of certain sources over others and to compare several versions of the texts. The idea of this catalogue evolved gradually in my mind from the perception that an explicit presentation of the makams would constitute a valuable reference both for evaluating the historical process of creating and performing music, as well as for establishing the inventory of modal categories and their taxonomic relations. As time passed, I was able to determine the development of a genuine Turkish concept in works that provided descriptive and analytical matter, and to detect through manuscript lines the significance of the process involving the semantics of the practice of music at different periods. The present book is mainly focused upon the practical theory of the makams reflected in the production and performance of the melodic scales the way they are described in Ottoman manuscripts.

Hasılı Osmanlı musikisinin değişim sürecine dair ipucu taşıyan her ayrıntı sergi mekânında yer bulmuş kendine. Sergi kapsamında Osmanlı İmparatorluğu ve Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin ilk yıllarında eski harflerle basılmış müzik malzemeleri arasından seçilen eserlerin dönem kayıtlarını dinleme imkânı da var. Sergi kitabı ile de İstanbul'un kültür zenginliğinin ses boyutunu araştırmak isteyen araştırmacılara önemli referanslar sunuluyor. Osmanlı musiki geleneğinin bir asırdan daha az bir zamanda eski harflerle basılmış dilimine bakarak, Batı kültürüyle etkileşime girmesi, yerli müziğin farklı ifade biçimleri kazanıyor olması gibi sonuçlar da anlatılmaya çalışılıyor. Bu yayınlar içinde ses sistemi, ana dizi, kuram, Osmanlı müziğinin ses aralıklarının yeni yazım sistemine uyarlanması tartışmaları gibi ayrıntılar da izlenebiliyor. Their fame and ubiquity have made them national icons -- but, Martin Stokes here contends, they do not represent the official version of Turkish identity propagated by anthems or flags; instead they evoke a much more intimate and ambivalent conception of Turkishness. Using these three singers as a lens, Stokes examines Turkeyʹs repressive politics and civil violence as well as its uncommonly vibrant public life in which music, art, literature, sports, and journalism have flourished. However, Stokesʹs primary concern is how Muren, Gencebay, and Aksuʹs music and careers can be understood in light of theories of cultural intimacy. In particular, he considers their contributions to the development of a Turkish concept of love, analyzing the ways these singers explore the private matters of intimacy, affection, and sentiment on the public stage. -- Publisher description
