Abstract: Each year, millions of people die from poverty-related causes. In this groundbreaking and thought-provoking book, Gwilym David Blunt argues that the only people who will end this injustice are its victims, and that the global poor have the right to resist the causes of poverty. He explores how the right of resistance is used to reframe urgent political questions: is illegal immigration a form of resistance? Can transnational social movements, such as the indigenous rights movement, provide the foundations for civil resistance to global poverty? If peaceful resistance fails, is armed struggle justified? Do people living in affluent states have a responsibility to help even if it requires them to break the law? Giving clear historical examples and engaging with fields including philosophy, international law, history, and international political studies, this volume addresses real-world issues from terrorism to activism. It will be important for anyone interested in applied philosophy and global injustice.

Abstract: Introduction: poverty and the poor -- A class-relational approach -- Labour, state and civil society in rural India -- Changing dynamics of exploitation in rural South India -- Dynamics of domination in rural South India: class relations at the state-society interface -- Social policy and class relations: the case of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme -- The neoliberalisation of civil society: community-based organisations, contractor NGOs and class relations -- Organisations of labouring class women -- Conclusion: poverty and class
Abstract: "Behind India's high recent growth rates lies a story of societal conflict that is scarcely talked about. Across production sites, state institutions and civil society organisations, the dominant and less well-off sections of society are engaged in a protracted conflict that determines the material conditions of one quarter of the world's 'poor'. Increasingly mobile, and often engaged in multiple occupations in multiple locations, India's 'classes of labour' are highly segmented, but far from passive in the face of ongoing processes of exploitation and domination. Drawing on detailed fieldwork in rural South India over more than a decade, the book uses a 'class-relational' approach that focuses on 'the poor's' iniquitous relations with others, and views class in terms of contested social relations rather than structural locations marked by particular characteristics. The book explores continuity and change amongst forms of accumulation, exploitation and domination in three interrelated arenas of class relations: labour relations, the state and civil society. Marginal gains for labour derived from structural change are contested by capital, local state institutions and state poverty reduction programmes tend to be controlled by the dominant class, and civil society organisations tend to reproduce rather than challenge the status quo. On the other hand, elements of state policy have the capacity to improve the material conditions of 'the poor' where such ends are actively pursued by labouring class organisations. It is argued that social policy currently provides the most fertile terrain for redistributing power and resources to the labouring class, and may clear the way for more fundamental transformations." -- Publisher's description

Abstract: "Founded in Toronto in 1968, the Praxis Corporation was a progressive research institute mandated to spark political discussion about a range of social issues, such as poverty, homelessness, anti-war activism, community activism and worker organization. Deemed a radical threat by the Canadian state, Praxis was put under rcmp surveillance. In 1970, Praxis's office was burgled and burned to the ground. No arrests were made, but internal documents and records stolen from Praxis ended up in the hands of the rcmp Security Service. All this occurred as Pierre Trudeau's Liberal government shifted away from social spending and poverty reduction towards the economic regime of austerity and neoliberalism that we have today. In When Poverty Mattered, Paul Weinberg combines insights gleaned from internal government documents, access to information requests and investigative journalism to provide both a history of radical politics in 1960s Canada and an illustration of misdeeds and dirty tricks the Canadian government orchestrated in order to disrupt activist organizations fighting for a more just society."--

Abstract: "Stereotypes of economically marginalized black and brown youth focus on drugs, gangs, violence, and teen parenthood. Families, schools, nonprofit organizations, and institutions in poor urban neighborhoods emphasize preventing such "risk behaviors." In The Making of a Teenage Service Class, Ranita Ray uncovers the pernicious consequences of concentrating on risk behaviors as key to targeting poverty. Having spent three years among sixteen black and Latina/o youth, Ray shares their stories of trying to beat the odds of living in poverty. Their struggles of hunger, homelessness, and untreated illnesses are juxtaposed with the perseverance of completing homework, finding jobs, and spending long hours traveling from work to school to home. By focusing on the lives of youth who largely avoid drugs, gangs, violence, and teen parenthood, the book challenges the idea that targeting these "risk behaviors" is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Ray compellingly demonstrates how the disproportionate emphasis on risk behaviors reinforces class and race hierarchies and diverts resources that could support marginalized youth's basic necessities and educational and occupational goals."...Provided by publisher

Abstract: Why are so many types of inequality suddenly increasing? Should we be worried that we're moving into a "second gilded age" with unprecedented levels of income inequality? In this new collection, David B. Grusky and Jasmine Hill present readings that lay bare the main changes in the social and economic landscape, what's driving these changes, and what might be done to reverse them. This reader delivers the latest and most influential contributions on economic inequality, social mobility, educational inequality, racial and ethnic relations, and gender inequality. The contributions span many fields and are authored by such top scholars as Emmanuel Saez (economist, UC Berkeley), Kathryn Edin (sociologist, Johns Hopkins), Raj Chetty (economist, Stanford), Florencia Torche (sociologist, NYU), Thomas Piety (economist, EHESS), and Lucien Bebchuk (law, Harvard). The readings are thematically organized, and each section begins with an introduction from Grusky and Hill that place the selections within a broader context. The pieces are expertly excerpted, allowing readers to quickly understand the main forces at work, the debates still in play, and what's still unknown. The resulting collection is a pitch-perfect introduction for undergraduates or anyone interested in learning why we're entering a new era of inequality and what can be done to change the tide. --

Abstract: A study on the local politics and social conflicts resulting from migration processes from Southeastern Europe

Abstract: Wie entsteht kooperative Praxis in lokalen Organisationen?

Abstract: "Affliction: Health, Disease, Poverty inaugurates a novel way of understanding the trajectories of health and disease in the context of poverty. It traces the unfolding of illness within families, local communities, neighborhood markets and in occult worlds. Privileging the experience of people living in these neighborhoods it asks how can global health be made to take this experience into account rather than escape from it?"--

Abstract: Inequality and poverty have returned with a vengeance in recent decades. To reduce them, we need fresh ideas that move beyond taxes on the wealthy. Anthony B. Atkinson offers ambitious new policies in technology, employment, social security, sharing of capital, and taxation, and he defends them against the common arguments and excuses for inaction

Abstract: Poverty, Ethnicity and Exclusion Minorities in China and India Poverty Incidence among Minorities Inequalities and Access Minority Migrants Xinjiang (China) vs. Jammu & Kashmir (India) Social Inclusion and Welfare Minorities in a Global Perspective
Abstract: Muslim minorities in China and India form only a small fraction of their respective populations, yet as they principally live in troubled border states, they are of key strategic importance in the war on terror. In this global context, this book explores whether economics is more important than the suppression of rights in explaining social unrest, Muslim minorities in China and India form only a small fraction of their respective populations. Yet as these minorities tend to be grouped in troubled border states they are of key strategic importance in the context of the global war on terror. In this global context, this book compares the regions of Jammu and Kashmir in India and Xinjiang in China, examining the incidence of poverty in terms of low and unequal incomes and lack of access to education, health and other public services. The book argues that economic and social factors (poverty, unemployment, inequalities, discrimination and social alienation) are more important in explaining social discontent, unrest and violence than political and religious factors such as the suppression of religious freedom and cultural identity and the violation of basic human rights. The global war on terror has diluted the domestic drive for self-determination for minorities in both China and India; their legitimate grievances are often confused with those of Islamic militants. The failures of the Chinese and Indian governments to address these grievances in the past may well have reinforced separatist tendencies. This book calls for a strategy to combine vigorous anti-poverty programmes with the prevention of extremist infiltration from abroad as the only way to peaceful development
Abstract: 'As the first thorough study of poverty and inequality among China's ethnic minorities ... this book is warmly to be welcomed ... the chapters on programmes are outstanding. To my knowledge, no other treatment of these important subjects goes into anything like the depth and sensitivity found in these chapters. It is scholarly, detailed and interesting.' - Colin Mackerras, Professor Emeritus, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia 'Poverty and Exclusion of Minorities in China and India includes solid research as well as pragmatic policy proposals.' - Morris Rosabbi, City University of New York, USA 'The study is a contribution not only to China studies, but to ... social science discipline.' - Barry Sautman, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology 'This book is recommended reading ... and will undoubtedly become a frequently cited work in future research on the topic.' - Bjorn Gustaffson, Gotberg University, Sweden 'The authors provide an informative review and assessment of China's anti-poverty policies and programs, focusing on the experience of Guizhou province, which is largely overlooked by the literature on China.' - Dan Sai, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing, China

Abstract: Why are some nations rich and others poor? Is it culture, the weather, geography? Perhaps ignorance of the right policies? Simply, no. None of these factors is either definitive or destiny. Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson conclusively show that it is man-made political and economic institutions that underlie economic success (or lack of it). Based on fifteen years of original research, Acemoglu and Robinson marshall historical evidence from the Roman Empire to the Soviet Union, from Korea to Africa, to build a new theory of political economy with great relevance for the big questions of today, including: China has built an authoritarian growth machine. Will it continue to grow at such high speed and overwhelm the West? Is America moving from a virtuous circle, in which efforts by elites to aggrandize power are resisted, to a vicious one that enriches and empowers a small minority? What is the most effective way to help move billions of people from the rut of poverty to prosperity? This book will change the way you look at--and understand--the world.--From American publisher description

Abstract: Preface: Why Egyptians filled Tahrir Square to bring down Hosni Mubarak and what it means for our understanding of the causes of prosperity and poverty -- So close and yet so different : Nogales, Arizona, and Nogales, Sonora, have the same people, culture, and geography. Why is one rich and one poor? -- Theories that don't work : poor countries are poor not because of their geographies or cultures, or because their leaders do not know which policies will enrich their citizens -- The making of prosperity and poverty : how prosperity and poverty are determined by the incentives created by institutions, and how politics determines what institutions a nation has -- Small differences and critical junctures: the weight of history : how institutions change through political conflict and how the past shapes the present -- "I've seen the future, and it works" : growth under extractive institutions : what Stalin, King Shyaam, the Neolithic Revolution, and the Maya city-states all had in common and how this explains why China's current economic growth cannot last -- Drifting apart : how institutions evolve over time, often slowly drifting apart -- The turning point : how a political revolution in 1688 changed institutions in England and led to the Industrial Revolution -- Not on our turf : barriers to development : why the politically powerful in many nations opposed the Industrial Revolution -- Reversing development : how European colonialism impoverished large parts of the world -- The diffusion of prosperity : how some parts of the world took different paths to prosperity from that of Britain -- The virtuous circle : how institutions that encourage prosperity create positive feedback loops that prevent the efforts by elites to undermine them -- The vicious circle : how institutions that create poverty generate negative feedback loops and endure -- Why nations fail today : institutions, institutions, institutions -- Breaking the mold : how a few countries changed their economic trajectory by changing their institutions -- Understanding prosperity and poverty : how the world could have been different and how understanding this can explain why most attempts to combat poverty have failed

Abstract: "Nearly all urban data used for the purpose of economic analysis, urban policymaking, and investment decision-making are aggregated data. Urban systems, however, are heterogeneous and complex, which requires more nuanced responses. This handbook reprocesses NSS household-level schedules to develop disaggregated data sets for different size classes of urban centres. Comparing changes in the pre-reform and post-reform periods, the book analyses the inequalities between metros and non-metros with regard to consumption, poverty, employment, education levels, and services. With detailed and meticulous data analysis covering the last 25 years, the book covers: The importance of small and medium towns (SMTs) in urban development and urban poverty trends across major states in India. Head Count Ratio (HCR) and per capita monthly consumption expenditures for different size class of urban centres in 16 major states in India. Employment patterns and unemployment levels across different size classes and disaggregated by sex. Level of basic facilities in different size classes of urban centres pertaining to water supply, sanitation, and garbage collection; and Patterns of urban inequalities and their policy implications."--Publisher's website

Abstract: "India has one of the fastest growing economies on earth. Over the past three decades, socialism has been replaced by pro-business policies as the way forward. And yet, in this, "new" India, grinding poverty is still a feature of everyday life. Some 450 million people subsist on less than $1.25 per day and nearly half of India, Äôs children are malnourished. In his latest book, Atul Kohli, a seasoned scholar of Indian politics and economics, blames this discrepancy on the narrow nature of the ruling alliance in India that, in its newfound relationship with business, has prioritized economic growth above all other social and political considerations. In fact, according to Kohli, the resulting inequalities have limited the impact of growth on poverty alleviation, and the exclusion of such a significant proportion of Indians from the fruits of rapid economic growth is in turn creating an array of new political problems. This thoughtful and challenging book affords an alternative vision of India, Äôs rise in the world that its democratic rulers will be forced to come to grips with in the years ahead"--

Abstract: Die »neue Unterschicht« ist disziplinlos, arbeitsscheu, dumm, fettleibig, fernsehsüchtig - kurz: »Unterschichtler« sind asozial.

Abstract: Globalization provokes both excitement and fear. This comprehensive collection, which brings together some of the most important published work on the subject, addresses a core issue of contention: the implications of globalization for poverty and inequality. While the debate is highly politicized, this insightful set of papers focuses on the contributions made by academic economists. Globalization may be regarded by some as the realization of new opportunities through the removal of barriers to the flows of goods, services, factors and knowledge. However, it may also have adverse consequences: notably for farmers and unskilled workers in rich countries and for workers in protected industries in poor countries. In addition, this important collection investigates the implications of globalization for the power of international corporations and for the sovereignty of poor countries. It also explores topics such as the history of globalization, migration, capital movements and international institutions

Abstract: Die »neue Unterschicht« ist disziplinlos, arbeitsscheu, dumm, fettleibig, fernsehsüchtig - kurz: »Unterschichtler« sind asozial.

Abstract: Paul Farmer has battled AIDS in rural Haiti and deadly strains of drug-resistant tuberculosis in the slums of Peru. A physician-anthropologist with more than fifteen years in the field, Farmer writes from the front lines of the war against these modern plagues and shows why, even more than those of history, they target the poor. What is it like to be a doctor to the poor, observing with an anthropologist's eye the harsh juxtapositions of excess and misery? Moving regularly from the teaching hospitals of Harvard, themselves abutting urban poverty, to a clinic in the hills of Haiti's Central Plateau, Farmer has experienced firsthand the peculiarly modern inequality that seems inseparable from AIDS, TB, malaria, and typhoid in the modern world, and that feeds emerging (or re-emerging) infectious diseases such as Ebola and cholera. In his stories of sickness and suffering, Farmer challenges the accepted methodologies of epidemiology and international health. He argues that most current explanations, from cost-effectiveness to patient non-compliance, inevitably lead to blaming the victims. This moving account is far from a hopeless inventory of insoluble problems. Farmer tells us what can be done in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds, by physicians determined to treat those in need. Deeply humane and harrowing in its detail, Infections and Inequalities weds meticulous scholarship with a passion for solutions-remedies for the plagues of the poor and the social maladies that have sustained them. The war against the plagues of the modern world, along with remedies for the plagues of the poor & the social maladies that have sustained them.
