Keywords: Arbeit Arbeitsteilung ; Arbeitsverhältnis ; Kulturvergleich

Abstract: The integration of Muslims into European societies is often seen as a major challenge that is yet to be confronted. This book, by contrast, starts from the observation that on legal, political and organizational levels integration has already taken place. It showcases the variety of theoretical approaches that scholars have developed to conceptualize Muslim life in Europe, and provides detailed empirical analysis of ten European countries. Demonstrating how Muslim life unfolds between conviviality and contentious politics, the contributors describe demographic developments, analyze legal controversies, and explore the action of government and state, Muslim communities and other civil society actors. Driving forces behind the integration of Islam are discussed in detail and compared across countries.

Abstract: Fernsehserien wie Alias, CSI, Fringe, Grey's Anatomy, Six Feet Under, Heroes, Lost, Private Practice, The Shield, The Sopranos, Dexter, True Blood, 24, Ugly Betty oder The Wire erfreuen sich weltweiter Beliebtheit.

(Elisabeth Mair-Gummermann)

Abstract: Although the Jains have a religious history spanning two-and -a-half millennia Western scholars have shown little interest in them until recently. Drawing on fieldwork conducted among Jains in the Indian state of Gujarat and a migrant Gujarati Jain group in Leicester, England, Marcus Banks aims to provide an understanding of contemporary Jain identity through an examination of their social and religious organizations. The first part of the book describes the array of religious and caste organizations found among Jains in the Indian city of Jamnagar and how Jains from Jamnagar and elsewhere in Gujarat migrated to East Africa, transforming their organizations in the process. The second part looks at the new forms of organization that have developed among the Jains who came to Leicester from East Africa and the part these have played in changing perceptions of Jainism itself. Throughout the book Dr Banks plays special attention to the use and transformation of urban space by religious and other groups, and he concludes with comments on the definition of religion and religious identity. This is one of the first book-length studies of the Jains as a migrant group overseas, where they are studied in their own right rather than simply as an ethnic minority. It will be valuable both for its documentation of a small but influential population and for its direct comparison of aspects of communal and religious organization in India and the UK.

Abstract: This is a study of the responses, especially the armed resistance, of the Turkana people of north-western Kenya to British colonial administration in the early twentieth century. From their first encounters with the colonial vanguard in the 1890s to the final surrender of the great Diviner, Loolel Kokoi, in 1926 many Turkana resisted imperial conquest. Even after the imposition of colonial rule, they continued to oppose the administration though a variety of strategies. This is the first full study of the pastoral Turkana people. In exploring their responses to European colonialism John Lamphear makes extenstive use or oral sources, as well as archival and published material. His analysis is also intended as an exercise in military history, and it addresses the fundamental question of why some African societies met the European advance with armed resistance while others did not. The Scattering Time make an important contribution to the historiography of the imperial conquest of Africa and especially Kenya. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: The Sudan, the largest county in Africa, is undergoing a period of rapid, often dramatic, change. Political strife, ecological disasters, and economic crises have overtaken many of its people, leading to widespread population movement, urban growth, inflation, and social unrest. The live of Sudanese women particularly are becoming very different as they assume new roles and responsibilities in response to altered circumstances.Susan Kenyon looks at developments in Sudanese society through the eyes and words of five women from the town of Sennar in Blue Nile Province. She illustrates the stengths and stability of local community and family life through the careers of a hairdresser, a market woman, a midwife, a holy woman, and a leader of a spirit possession cult. These women talk about their families and homes, their work and their social lives, their hopes and aspiration. Their accounts offer insight into contemporary life in a major developing country and the changing role of women within its society. (Umschlagtext)

Abstract: This book studies the impact of the Atlantic slave trade on the "Slave Coast" of West Africa, an area covering modern south-eastern Ghana, Togo, Benin, and south-western Nigeria. This region was one of the most important sources of slaves for the Atlantic slave trade, and its history provides an exceptionally well-documented illustration of the effect of the trade on the indigenous African societies of the Slave Coast. The expansion of slave exports during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries coincided with a period of political disorder, which ended with the rise of the new kingdom of Dahomey. Dahomey was a more militarized and more politically centralized state than those which preceded it in the region, and its distinctive character reflected the impact of the slace trade. This is the first detailed study of the early history of the Slave Coast for over twenty years. Robin Law examines the events which preceded the rise of Dahomey, the organization of the slave trade and its impact on the domestic economy, and the social and political structure of Dahomey and its predecessors. This is a meticulously researched, lucid, and scholarly analysis which makes an important contribution to the history both of early modern European expansion and of pre-colonial West Africa

Abstract: This is a history of the hydrpolitics of the Nile Valley from 1900 to 1988. The Nile is the longest river in the world, and its basin covers a vast area, inhabited by millions. Attempts to develop the Nile and control its waters are of fundamental importance to the future of the inhabitans of Egypt, the Sudan, Ethiopia, and East Africa. Acute drought and heavy flooding in the Nile Basin have both wreaked havoc in the past, and man has struggled to control the precious waters. Engineers and hydrologists from Britain, Egypt, and the Sudan, with proposals from the Awan High Dam to the Jonglei Canal, have determined the way of life of the millions of people who depend on the Nile waters. Abstract: Famine that Kills is a unique study based on detailed field research carried out during the terrible famine of 1984-85 in the Darfur region of Sudan. De Waal adopts the original approach of analyzing the famine from the perspective of the rural people who suffered through it and in the process uncovers a number of new and important insights. When news of the famine broke, it was predicted that without massive food aid, millions of people would starve. The aid did not arrive, yet millions continued to survive. De Waal argues that death was caused primarily by disease brought about by social disruption. In addition, the priority for rural people during the crisis was not to try to save every life, but instead to preserve their way of life for the future. Consequently, he concludes, the huge international famine relief effort was largely irrelevant to their survival.Recounting the untold story of the Sudanese famine--how rural Sudanese were able to survive on their own resources, using skill, local knowledge, and great tenacity--de Waal's multidisciplinary study will have profound implications, not just for famine relief policies, but for our very conception of "famine" itself.
