Abstract: Borders of Desire is a collection of studies from the eastern borders of Europe, particularly the Baltics and the Balkans, that take a novel approach to borders and the work they do. Instead of viewing borders only as obstructions to the fulfillment of desire, this book shows how borders produce desire, particularly gendered and sexualized desire.

Abstract: Transnational solidarity excavates the forgotten histories of solidarity that were vital to radical political imaginaries during the 'long' 1960s. It decentres the conventional Western focus of this critical historical moment by foregrounding transnational solidarity with, and across, anticolonial and anti-imperialist liberation struggles. The book traces the ways in which solidarity was conceived, imagined and enacted in the border crossings - of nation, race and class - made by grassroots activists. This diverse collection draws links between exiled revolutionaries in Uruguay, post-colonial immigrants in Britain, and Greek communist refugees in East Germany who campaigned for their respective causes from afar while identifying and linking up with wider liberation struggles. Meanwhile, Arab immigrants in France, Pakistani volunteers and Iraqi artists found myriad ways to express solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Neglected archives also reveal Tricontinental Cuban-based genealogies of artistic militancy, as well as transnational activist networks against Portuguese colonial rule in Africa. Bringing together original research with contributions from veteran activists and artists, this interdisciplinary volume explores how transnational solidarity was expressed in and carried through the itineraries of migrants and revolutionaries, film and print cultures, art and sport, political campaigns and armed struggle. It presents a novel perspective on radical politics of the global sixties which remains crucial to understanding anti-racist solidarity today.

Abstract: The phrase 'here be monsters' or 'here be dragons' is commonly believed to have been used on ancient maps to indicate unexplored territories which might hide unknown beasts. This book maps and explores places between science and politics that have been left unexplored, sometimes hiding in plain sight - in an era when increased emphasis was put on 'openness'. The book is rooted in a programme of research funded by the Leverhulme Trust entitled: 'Making Science Public: Challenges and opportunities', which runs from 2014 to 2017. One focus of our research was to critically question the assumption that making science more open and public could solve various issues around scientific credibility, trust, and legitimacy. Chapters in this book explore the risks and benefits of this perspective with relation to transparency, responsibility, experts and faith

Abstract: In popular campaigns such as #metoo and #timesup, questions of power and agency are increasingly discussed as issues of injusry or empowerment. Vulnerability has emerged as a key concept in these discussions and their academic analyses. This book investigates the historical legacies and contemporary forms and effects of the language of vulnerability. In today's media culture, traumatic first-person or group narratives have popular currency, mobilising affect from compassion to rage in order to gain visibility and political advantage. Vulnerability is seen as a kind of capital; not only as victimhood but also as a resource that can be adopted for various purposes. Contributors to the book, including Jack Halberstam and Sara Ahmed, examine how affect and vulnerability not only reveal but also obscure asymmetries of power, how media activism and state policies address so-called vulnerable groups, and how we determine whose vulnerability counts as socially and culturally legible. Providing keen insights into the political potential as well as the constraints of vulnerability for feminist, queer and anti-racist criticism, the book will be of interest to scholars and students in media and cultural studies, affect theory, gender studies, queer theory and critical race studies
