Abstract: Sisters in Affliction is the first book by a woman from the Horn of Africa to deal with female circumcision and infibulation. This widespread practice is one which more and more women in Africa are discussing publicly, criticising and campaigning against. Riqiya Dualeh examines the origins and incidence of the practice in Africa and other parts of the world generally, as well as focussing on Somalia. She describes the different types of operation involved and their physical and psychological effects and complications, as well as the ideological rationale for the custom, including the manipulation of religious teachings, and its economic aspect.
