Kurzfassung: This work traces the evolution of the modern Ethiopian State and its consolidation under the last three successive regimes. Leenco Lata critically assesses the Transitional Period of the post-Dergue era between the July 1991 Conference, which ratified the Transitional Charter and the formation of the Transition Government of Ethiopia, and August 21, 1995, when the new Federal Constitution of Ethiopia was ratified. The author argues that the overthrow of the Dergue regime and the adoption of a democratic agenda in July 1991 was an important historical juncture that afforded Ethiopia the opportunity to make a clean break with her imperial and autocratic past. As the deputy Secretary General of the Oromo Liberation Front, one of the major organizations to participate in the July 1991 Conference, Leenco Lata was deeply involved in the task of drawing up Ethiopia's post-Dergue political structure and the arduous task of conceptualizing the undertaking to democratize Ethiopia and make it a viable operational state. This book is a detailed firsthand account of how "this latest opportunity to decolonize and democratize the Ethiopian State ended in a disappointing failure." Furthermore, the factors that favored or stood in the way of effecting a genuine transition to democracy are also catalogued and discussed. In particular, the US-led international community's influence, the key factor that could have kept the democratization process on track, is analyzed. In the final section, the author presents his recipe for change: The Ethiopian state must be further decentralized, decolonized and democratized if it is to escape the harrowing consequences of disintegration.

Kurzfassung: Fire From the Ashes tells the extraordinary story of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) revolution, from its beginning in February 1975 by a handful of students, its expansion into the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) coalition, and their victory in May 1991 over the Soviet-backed military dictatorship of Mengistu Haile-Mariam. The story accumulates slowly through multiple voices and perspectives. It is presented from the point of view of an external observer learning as she goes along. The book is based on three journeys through the war zone, which not only show different points in the process of revolution, but different states in the author's understanding of the history, causes and evolution of this struggle. Jenny Hammond unlocks the hitherto hidden history of the EPRDF liberation movement. She provides the reader with a unique insight into the origin and evolution of the movement and describes the social and political transformations of the society during the war period. For the first time, the author unveils the unique record of this important historical movement through taped interviews with the EPRDF leadership, including the present Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi.

Kurzfassung: The contributors of this provocative but timely book argue that the Oromo nation is currently engaged in a liberation struggle from Ethiopia colonial ruling class and its supporters. The main objectives of the Oromo national movement are the restoration of the Oromo democratic tradition known as gada, liberation of Oromia from foreign domination, and the fundamental transformation of the Oromo nation politically, culturally and economically. It is further argued that the Oromo, who constitute a numerical majority in Eastern Africa, should build multinational societies based on consociational or real representative democracy. This Timely collection of essays examines the historical and cultural factors that have contributed to the emergence and development of Oromo nationalism, the essence of this nationalism, and the prospects of the Oromo national struggle, as well as the Ethiopian reaction. The book provides a multidimensional and critical interpretation of the Oromo national movement by bringing together the expertise of outstanding intellectuals and prominent Oromo politicians.Besides the editor, the contributors are Lemmu Baissa, Leenco Lata, Edmond Keller, Kuwee Kumsa, John Sorenson and Mohammed Hassen. Although the contributors have different approaches, they agree that the Oromo have been suffering under the domination of the Ethiopian and modern world systems. Their national struggle Fr self-determination social justice, and democracy has begun to have some impact. Further, the book makes the case that the Oromo national movement is gradually evolving as the main political and cultural force to counter Ethiopian colonialism.

Kurzfassung: Ethiopia is an ancient state with a new constitution and a new beginning. The feudal monarchy that has been its distinctive feature since pre-Christian times has been swept aside. The short flirtation with communism and the civil war it spawned is also over. A new reality has emerged symbolized by, and reflected in, the constitution of 1994. A federal system of government has been installed and a democratic process is unfolding, propelling Ethiopia towards the mainstream of world civilization. Fasil Nahum is well suited both academically and personally to bring out the first book on the Ethiopian constitution of 1994. The intricacies of federalism and the unfolding of democracy in this ancient land is handled in an interesting scholarly fashion. The book explores Ethiopian history since ancient times from the constitutional perspective and provides startling insights into the traditional unwritten constitution of historical Ethiopia. It is with this background that the present and the future of the third largest nation in Africa is constitutionally examined.

Kurzfassung: Historically, studies of Ethiopia, like those of other countries, tend to concentrate on events at or near the center of political power, and devote far too little attention to other areas. The present account attempts, at least in part, to redress the balance by shifting attention to the "peripheral" regions, which, while of central importance to their own inhabitants, tend to receive relatively little focus in studies of the Ethiopian region as a whole. This book is an historical investigative account of the history of the expanding and often nebulous borders of Ethiopia, beginning from ancient times to 1800. it deals with areas that have for years been contentious and problematic for the adjacent peoples in the region: Land of Bahr Nagash, Ifat, Adal, Fatagar, Dawaro, Bali, Damot, Gurage, Waj, gamo, ganz, Gafat, Kafa, etc. It contains numerous illustrations of antiquities, from old European maps to Ethiopian historical drawings.

Kurzfassung: This study of popular protest and resistance in Ethiopia focuses on three important peasant-based rebellions that occurred between 1941 and 1970. The author attempts to uncover certain key features of popular protest in pre-revolutionary Ethiopia. Drawing upon ample evidence, he concludes that these revolts were not a consequence of capitalist exploitation, as was usually the case in most Third World countries, but were connected with the rise of a modern, bureaucratic, multi-ethnic national state. Ethiopian peasants were neither conservative nor compliant, as is often assumed, although their defiance was nevertheless essentially non-revolutionary. These interesting and fresh findings also suggest a possible explanation for the eruption and intensification of armed conflict in rural Ethiopia after 1974. On a theoretical level, the study makes a significant contribution to the ongoing analysis of social movements in agrarian societies.

Kurzfassung: Ras Alula (1847-1897) was one of the Big Men or Telek Saw who played a prominent role in the making of modern Ethiopia. He was famous enough to be lamented by a British historian as, "the greatest leader that Abyssinia has produced since the death of Emperor Theodore in 1868." As remembered by the Ethiopians and reflected in their literature, "the famous and brave Ras Alula" was a great warrior whose valor and military skill contributed greatly to various important victories over Ethiopia's enemies. Both Italians and Ethiopians regarded Alula as the most persistent opponent of Italian involvement in Ethiopian affairs.Professor Haggai Erlich's Ras Alula and the Scramble for Africa: A Political Biography has all the ingredients of personal drama. The life and times of this great Ethiopian political figure of the 19th century in its vicissitudes reflects some of the major issues in his period. The revival of Tigrean hegemony over Ethiopia; the military victories which guaranteed the survival of Ethiopia's independence; the rise of Menilek II and the great national victory near Adwa were all milestones in the Ras's life. Simultaneously, the story of this son of a peasant - his successes and failures, his ambitions and weaknesses, his achievements and mistakes - was an important factor in those developments. This biography makes a significant contribution in the study of an important chapter in the history of Ethiopia and Eritrea through the experience of a person who was not the head of the state. As such, it is also an insignificant analysis of late 19th century Ethiopian sociopolitics.

Kurzfassung: What impact do displaced people and refugees have on the place where they eke out their living from resources under pressure? Is land degradation due to natural factors or to the people on the edge? Most policies concerning the settlement of nomads, peasants, refugees, internally displaced persons and returnees fail to take into account their impact on the environment. Gaim Kibreab questions the degree of the impact of Eritreans displaced by war with Ethiopia on a region of the Sudan. Was the land degradation on and around the scheme due to humans and their livestock? The study provides evidence to question many assumptions. How do the people respond to loss of income due to land degradation? Do they become more innovative and more responsive to changes in agricultural techniques? Or do their land use practices become ever more exploitative?
