Abstract: The woman Namburagua makes the major part of the required fibres from the young sprout of a sago-palm. She dyes the fibres yellow with smashed ginger root, red by boiling them with the leaves of the awui tree, and black by using mud. Several yellow dyed fibres, reserved for the back of the skirt, are bound with bark fibre and dyed red, then, after a further bounding, dyed black. Another, white-coloured fibre is obtained by Namburagua from the bark of a marsh-plant, which has been soaked in water for one week to loosen the inner bark.

Abstract: The film was taken in a settlement of muslim emigrants (muhacir) from Western Siberia. These Westsiberian Tatars of Uzbek origin (buharist) fled from the regions of Omsk and Tobolsk and were settled in the Vilâyet of Konya at the beginning of the 20th century. They have adopted the agricultural economy of their neighbours, the "native" Turks and Kurds (yerli) with whom they also share their religion, the sunnitic islam of the hanefi branch. This film shows some of the ceremonies of a muslim wedding in the willage, namely the preparation of the traditional barley soup (ürey), the reception of the guests in the house of the brides father, music and speen dancing, the loading and transport of the trousseau, the procession of the bride and her relatives through the village and over the fields and the reception of the newly weds at their new house by the village people. The film is incomplete, since some of the wedding ceremonies have not been filmed for ethical or technical reasons.

Abstract: Papyrus boats of small size, like the one shown in the film, are generally used for fishing at Lake Tana. The boats suck water and stark to sink during use. They have to be dried after each ride. Having been in use for about half a year, a boat must be exchanged. The technique of building a boat is comparatively simple. A first bundle of papyrus-shrubs is formed and lengthened by further short bundles to reach the presumed boatlength. This bundle (the keel) is stiffened by a wooden stick. Then, more bundles are added successively on both sides (each bundle has to be lengthened again and is tightened to the forgoing bundle). Gradually the boat's sides rise. Before the bow and the stern of the boat are tightened, the bundles are pruned ro reduce the odd shrubs. To keep the easy collapsible plait in a "Boat"-form, an extra thick bundle is pressed into the interior space. This bundle is also used as a seat.

Abstract: Nggai'uk, a widow from the village of Meno, shows how bark fibres of the Gnetum gnemon bush are twisted into the cord-like thread used to procedure carrying bags. Then, using the knotless netting technique with hourglass-shaped loops, she manufactures the bag itself. The looping is interrupted repeatedly, whenever a new supply of thread is needed. The outside of the bag is decorated in the course of manufacture. For this reason Nggai'uk works with seven parallel threads; three of them are left the basic colour, beige, twi are dyed blue and two red for the length of the pattern. An ornament at the same time chequered and bank-like is produced by the stepped course of the seven rows of loops. When the netting is finished, the bag is filled with stones so that the threads are stretched uniformly. Finally firewood is fetched, and the carrying function of the bag is demonstrated.

Abstract: The material culture of the Makú, a food-gathering community, is, compared to that of the neighbouring Tukano groups, rather poor. An important product is a basket, used for gathering and for batering. The film shows a Makú woman making a bell-shaped gathering basket. The materials used are two different kinds of lianas, made slender over the fire and then worked into a basket by the twining technique.

Abstract: The northwest Amazon river area is one of the principal centres of masks in South America. Among the Makuna masked festivals are held at the harvest of particular crops and play a large ritual role. The film shows the different stages of making a mask: making the reddish-brown bark cloth and twisting the threads, sewing on a hoop of liana as frame for the face, modelling the face of resin, and affixing balsa sticks serving as eyes and nose. Geomtric designs are then made on the face in white and yellow, a tuft of hair made of bark fibres is attached, and the completed mask is tried on. The mask symbolizes a fish demon.

Abstract: The film shows Polar Eskimos, fishing salmons through ice-holes on a frozen lake in the Thule-District. For fishing they use two different techniques: The first includes the use of a particular harpoon which is especially designed for that purpose. The fish is attracted by a bait, which was dropped down instead of fish-hook at a fishing rod. As soon as a fish appears, becoming visible through the hole, the Eskimo pushes down the harpoon to pierce the prey. The other method is comparable to the fishing with a spoon bait, which is known as modern fishing technique too.

Abstract: Durch Massagebewegungen und Abreibungen mit einer Handvoll Fasermaterial "entreißt" der Heilbehandler dem Thorax der Patientin "Krankheitsmaterie" in Form kleiner Knochensplitter.
Abstract: By massage and rubbing with a handful of fibrous material from the inner bark of a particular plant the practitioner "extracts" the disease from the thorax of a woman in the form of small splinters of bone. In this way he removes altogether 11 small splinters, preventing them afterwards from getting back to the woman's upper body by anointing it with healing oil. In order to detect the guilty person, i. e. the person having caused the disease by special spiritual powers and abilities, the practitioner carries out a sand-oracle, which reveals the husband's mistress as responsible for the illness.

Abstract: In the garden the layer of sand covering the fertile soil is removed from the piece of ground to be sown with lucerne. The soil is turned with the hoe, then small seed-beds are shaped with the hands. Fertilizer is squattered on and mixed with the earth. Water is fetched in buckets from the well and poured on the seed-beds covered with a piece of mat to distribute the water evenly and to prevent the seed being swept off. A second garden is watered by a draw-well operating on the principle of the shaduf.

Abstract: A man named Yassi makes a tool djo. For this purpose he requires a stick about six metres long and four flat pieces of wood which he splits off from a suitable tree in the forest. In the camp he shapes the pieces of wood, tapers one end off to a point. He then splits one end of the long stick into four pieces, inserts the pieces of wood into the openings, and ties the whole so as to form a funnel. Two girls then take the finished tool and go out into the forest. They discover an esouma plant, which has a root going up to six metres into the ground, and they dig out the root piece by piece by use of the funnel. Back in the camp the girls prepare the roots to eat.

Abstract: The village youth play a number of different rhythm models on small slit drums fabricated from bamboo sections. Those who are still inexperienced tap the simple, uniform beats; the experienced leaders of the orchestra perform the irregular rhythmic models (principle of alternating figuration, cf. E 2163).

Oktober 1973 in Rikon/Schweiz.
Abstract: The film, composed of two parts (E 2201 and E 2202), presents the greater part of a ceremony held on 9th October 1973 in a big camp at Rikon (Switzerland) on the occasion of the Dalai Lama's first visit to Europe. At this ceremony hundreds of faithful entreat "perpetual presence" of the Dalai Lama, i. e. that he may live long and return to our world, after the extinction of his actual existence, in successive incarnations, until all beings are delivered from suffering.

Abstract: The rite shown in the film is performed in honour of the god Vishnu. The performance takes place in the courtyard of a Brahmin homestead, where a painting has been made on the ground to serve as an altar. Branches and garlands enclose the place of the ritual. The most important cult objects are a vase (kalasa) and a salagrama stone symbolizing the god Vishnu. Special locations are prepared for these objects: a platform of sand decorated with a ritual yantra painting for the cult vase and a board placed in the centre of painting altar for the brass vessel supporting the salagrama stone. The cult objects (upachara) are worshipped with specific materials fixed in number and in form: e. g. water, sandlewood, incense, floweers and leaves, essences, graines of rice, oil lamps, and gifts of food. The ritual is conducted by the priest, who gives instructions and recites texts. The ceremony being over, the gifts of food are divided among the participants.

Abstract: Among the Azande termites are not only appreciated food, but they also play a large role in the suprasensitive conceptions of this group. To carry out the termite-oracle, two different sticks are placed in a termite-hill overnight; the oracle depends on which of the two is eaten, alone or chiefly, by the termites. During the whole procedure the consultant addresses the termites in the form of a dialogue. Among the methods of divination of the Azande the termite-oracle occupies a middle position, its efficacy is not so great as that of the poison-oracle.

Abstract: The principle of alternating figuration playing has a special meaning for Balinese music. In this context, a figuration element is broken into exemplary rhythmic formulas, each of which is performed by a special player and are woven perfectly smoothly into one another, as it were. The subject of the film is the Oncangan rhythmic practised on rice trough as well as their transference to matched instruments: slotted drums, Jews' harps, as well as Angklung orchestra.

Scrapings from the red root fibres of an unspecified plant are dissolved in water and administered to young chicken. If the first animal dies, the answer to the question asked is affirmative; to test the answer, the question must be repeated that way that the answer is confirmed by the surviving of the second chicken. If the first chicken is spared, the answer to the question is negative; to confirm the answer the answer the second animal has to die. If both animals should live or both die, the oracle is not valid and must be consulted again.
