    Kurzfassung: The essay aims at reconstructing the history of the University of Florence, from the fall of fascism on July 25th 1943 to the post-World War II period. At the center of this path lies Piero Calamandrei's Rettorato, which began in the summer of 1943 and immediately interrupted by events related to September 8th and the armistice with the Allied powers. As dean of the university, in the aftermath of the Liberation of Florence in August 1944, Calamandrei marked a significant turning point. It was a turning point that not only promptly revived teaching and research functions; but it was also able to provide for the reinstatement of teachers expelled as a result of the racial legislation and for opposition to fascism, along with the beginning of the removals of teachers most involved with the dictatorship. At the same time, in the context of a city deeply involved in the Liberation, the new constitutional order of the Republic began to be drawn; a constitutional project to which Florentine professors - such as Piero Calamandrei and Giorgio La Pira - would offer an outstanding contribution

Maria Nuova have seen numerous teachers hold the chairs of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and have important roles in international research, but also in the management of pharmacies in the area. This contribution reviews all the transformations that have historically occurred in the pharmacy throughout 100 years of the University's history

    Kurzfassung: This study deals with aspectuality in Resian, a Slovene-based variety of north-eastern Italy, and the probable role of Romance influence on developments in this domain. In part, these findings are compared with the situation found with other non-Romance linguistic varieties spoken in Italy, especially Molise Slavic. The functional-semantic field of aspectuality is considered both in relation to its grammatical centre, viz. verbal aspect, and its lexical periphery. Language contact plays an important role in the almost complete transition of the Resian dual aspect system to a purely derivational opposition “imperfective : perfective”, also absorbing most of its prior morphosyntactic opposition “imperfect : aorist : perfect”. Furthermore, the special aspectual selection properties of phasal verbs and the role of aspect in the functions of modal verbs merit particular mention in this respect. In the case of lexical and periphrastic means of expression, a number of calqued progressive and prospective (imminent) periphrases, mostly calqued from Romance models, are discussed

Differently from prior readings of Clauberg that analyze his philosophy from the point of view of the construction of ‘ontology’, the approach of the present paper sees in Clauberg’s philosophy a late-Humanist work, accentuating his pedagogic and hermeneutical interests. Indeed, in Clauberg’s philosophy, hermeneutics and pedagogy are intrinsically bound together. This, the paper suggests, is supported not only by the concrete subject-matters of his logic, but also by the examination of Clauberg’s milieu and of his sources. Analysis, in this framework, has a strictly hermeneutical usage

    Kurzfassung: This book, inspired by the thought of Giacomo Becattini, reflects on why local communities continue to exist and spread. Why does the planet not become one place without borders? Why instead do we humans preferentially group ourselves into communities that are neither 'too wide' nor 'too narrow'? What characterizes today's form of community? Why are these communities rooted in places? What is peculiarly 'local' about places? Together with Becattini, we answer that the foundation of local communities is social culture. In its material and symbolic dimensions, social culture animates various forms of proximity between people and between groups: in addition to territorial proximity, social proximity (also online) and institutional proximity matter a lot. This implies that today a local community is not only a place where social culture makes us physically close, but where at least some of the major forms of proximity intersect

    Kurzfassung: Consciousness is connected with the fact that a subject is aware and open to the manifestation of whatever appears. Existence, by contrast, is used to express the fact that something is given in experience, is present, or is real. Usually, the two notions are taken to be somehow related. This chapter suggests that existence is at best introduced as a metaphysical (or meta-experiential) concept that inevitably escapes the domain of conscious experience. In order to illustrate this claim, two case studies are considered. The first case is provided by Descartes’s famous treatment of consciousness and existence in his Meditations on First Philosophy. The second case is meant to contrast the Cartesian approach by taking the opposite route, as delineated by Emanuele Severino (1929–2020) in his ‘fundamental ontology’

    Kurzfassung: This article deals with some specific characteristics of the Italo-Albanian (Arbëresh) verbal system, including the “presumptive” and “unfinished” past, but focuses especially on the expression of Aktionsart with the help of peri­phrases variously present, if not only marginally, in Balkan Albanian and already attested in the first Arbëresh grammars of the 19th century. The distribution of the periphrastic constructions with progressive and imminentive functions in a series of Italo-Albanian dialects is analysed on the basis of an initial overview of durative periphrases presented in Savoia (1991), but enriched by further research and integrated into a broader typological overview. The author hypothesises that the periphrases in question are not so much the result of linguistic contact with actual Italo-Romance varieties, but rather go back to the Balkan context of possibly Proto-Romance origin

    Kurzfassung: Esse-perfect in Macedonian: lexical distribution and contextual restrictions - The present article deals with the esse-perfect in Macedonian, also found in Aromanian and some Albanian dialects, which is formed with verbs of both aspects by means of the auxiliary sum ‘to be’ plus the (formally) passive participle. In contrast to previous work on this topic, our research sets out to determine the domains of usage for this construction in Macedonian, both in the standard language and its dialects, especially those on the western periphery and in linguistic enclaves surrounded by Albanian-speaking communities. In addition to personal fieldwork, three main corpora serve as a material basis for this task; see the list of sources at the end of the article. The formation of the esse-perfect is rather limited when compared with the other two perfects of Macedonian. In particular, its distribution clearly depends on lexical verb classes, with language contact accounting for less rigid restrictions and a wider usage of this construction

    Kurzfassung: This article deals with morphological non-active verbal voice, which characterises reflexive, middle and passive structures in Standard Albanian and Arbëresh dialects. The data, compared to those of Italian, show that the three different strategies for the realisation of Standard Albanian and Arbëresh non-active morphology interact with the categories of mood, tense and aspect. In particular, these morphological strategies determine a perfective/ imperfective split as well as a series of restrictions which convey different interpretations associated with a stative or eventive interpretation. Particular attention is paid to the possible influence of Italian structures on the Italo-Albanian varieties in the domain of non-active voice

The translation, together with some notes and the essay included in the volume are accompained by personal memories of two Portuguese dear friends of Correia. The volume thus structured aims to introduce the traveling and Eastern Lusitanian soul of António Correia who lived in Macao for almost twenty years. At the same time, the volume aims to present for the first time, through other bio-bibliographical details, the man and the poet António Correia, even now not well known in the Italian and Portuguese academia

Both ones had a more or less organised chancery and produced documents in chancery form. Their archival history too is similar. The paper proposes and discusses the documentary typology of the documents made by and for the Lords. The Empire, the Holy See, the Kingdoms may have influenced the form of seigneurial litterae patentes and clausae, although there were individual nuances. The other documents, as registers and other chancery books were influenced by different regional traditions

    Kurzfassung: This paper deals with the Upper Sorbian aspect categories. While the traditional inflectional opposition imperfect vs. aorist is still widely used in the standard variety, it has almost disappeared from the colloquial variety used in the Catholic area of Upper Lusatia in Eastern Germany. By contrast, the derivational opposition of perfectivity formally persists in this area but has undergone some changes which are very specific to this variety. In particular, this aspect opposition, expressed by means of prefixes and suffixes has been radically restructured, such that its functional domain has shifted from grammatical aspect to grammatical telicity. It is argued that the starting point of this change is to be sought in an identification of the Sorbian aspect-sensitive grammatical prefixes with the German prefixes which mainly express telicity in processes of word formation. Special usages dealt with in this study are, on the one hand, the expression of habituality through (formally) imperfective verbs and, surprisingly, the expression of ongoing telic processes, but also of the analytical future, by means of their perfective correlates, on the other

    Kurzfassung: This volume presents the recovery, cataloging, and valorization project of the collection donated by the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II (1741-1790) to the Mineralogical Cabinet of the Collegio Nazareno in Rome in 1785. This donation represents, so far, the only geo-mineralogical collection belonging to Joseph II with certainty. The specimen cataloging records, drawn according to the ICCD national catalographic standards for the mineralogical (BNM) and petrographic (BNPE) heritage, are freely available on the Catalogo Generale dei Beni Culturali website. The collection is open to visitors in its permanent exhibition at the Istituto San Giuseppe Calasanzio in Rome. This volume has been realized within the project PANN20.00605 “Dono imperiale. La collezione mineralogica dell’Imperatore Giuseppe II al Collegio Nazareno di Roma” thanks to the financial support of the Italian Ministry of University and Research, Annual Grant – Legge 6/2000 – D.D. 1524 of 21/01/2019

    Kurzfassung: The article examines two explicitly different meanings of the expression 'pervasiveness of lordship'. The first moves from the more commune meaning of pervasiveness, understood as a synonym of capillary diffusion, to distinguish between areas of seigniorial centrality and areas of seigniorial marginality in late medieval Italy. The second meaning understands “pervasiveness” in a less usual sense, i.e. as the capacity of lordship to thoroughly penetrate the surrounding world. After describing this notion of pervasiveness, the article illustrates some examples, drawn from various late medieval Italian regions, of lordships without pervasiveness and of pervasive lordships, questioning the capacity of seigniorial pervasiveness to survive and reconfigure itself in the late Middle Ages

Rationalization: the insertion of public scientists into legislative/executive mechanisms, with the creation in each democracy of a National Scientific Assembly – parallel to the extant partypolitical Chamber of Representatives – consisting of academic experts and researchers (legal scholars, political analysts, economists, sociologists, land/urban planners, industry/infrastructure designers, biotechnologists, agronomists, ecologists, educationists, specialists on public health, on cultural heritage, etc.) elected by universal suffrage; 2. Extension: the broadening of the institutions of direct democracy and reinforcement of the electorate as decision-maker of last resort. So the main themes and objectives of the book are an examination of the major flaws in today’s democracies (pars destruens) and a proposal for a renewed institutional framework (pars construens)

    Kurzfassung: This article sets out to present a recent study of progressive and prospective periphrases in Cimbrian, a German-based variety spoken in Northern Italy. Our research complements a renewed interest in the grammaticalization processes of progressive periphrases in inland-German dialects and standard German, focusing on German-based dialects that are spoken in isolation, namely not under the roof of Standard German. In such varieties similar processes take place; they show, however, accelerated dynamics due to the contact situation and can, thus, shed light on the diachrony of German and its dialects. In relation to the aspectual constructions in Cimbrian, we discovered a previously undocumented perspective periphrasis, viz. soin drumauz + zu-INF, which, however, is destined to be discarded from the aspectual system of Cimbrian on account of the expansion of the more general periphrasis soin nå + zu-INF. In terms of the dynamics of contact-induced grammar change, our research confirms that new constructions in a contact language are not simply the replication of those in the donor language but, rather, represent the internal recombination of abstract features in the aspectual system of Cimbrian

    Kurzfassung: Pierre-Sylvain Régis’s Cartesianism is quite singular in seventeenth-century French philosophy. Though, can we speak of a form of experimental science in Régis’s work? After exploring his notions of ‘system’ and ‘hypothesis’, I will define his position in relation to Claude Perrault, Jacques Rohault, and the Royal Society. I argue, first, that the contrasts which traverse French science are not so much about the use of experiments but about whether or not observational data can be traced back to hypotheses and to a coherent system. Secondly, that we can detect a significant similarity between Boyle’s positions and the views expressed by Perrault and also by Régis. Lastly, that French science, even in its Cartesian version, is much more probabilistic than English experimental philosophy

Po Valley), with a focus on levies that appear to have the greatest impact. That is: tolls and other charges on trade; control of collective resources; personal burdens (military and civil); and also state taxes, monopolies or tributes belonging to the state and granted to the lords in various forms of delegation, not ubiquitous, but sometimes important. Only a few hints are dedicated to judicial proceeds, rights on the circulation of land and people, and tributes on the borderline with the landed-based ones

    Kurzfassung: Verbal aspect in the Macedonian dialect of Boboshtica-Drenova and Albanian-Slavic language contact - Long-term subdominant bilingualism with Albanian has had a significant impact on verbal aspect marking in the Macedonian dialect of Boboshtica-Drenova (South-East Albania). The Slavic formal opposition of perfective and imperfective aspect marked through a variety of derivational methods has been preserved. However, under Albanian influence two continuous aspect con­structions have been grammaticalised in the dialect, one of them based on the locative ǵe, and the other on the adversative conjunction toko. The paths of grammaticalization of these markers are investigated, which include structural transfer (ǵe 〈 locative and temporal tek, toko 〈 adversative and continuous po), which is partially supported by the phonetic similarity between the respective Albanian and Macedonian dialectal markers (toko || duke, tek)

    Kurzfassung: In arguing against the likelihood of consciousness in non-human animals, Descartes advances a slippery slope argument that if thought were attributed to any one animal, it would have to be attributed to all, which is absurd. This paper examines the foundations of Thomas Willis’ comparative neuroanatomy against the background of Descartes’ slippery slope argument against animal consciousness. Inspired by Gassendi’s ideas about the corporeal soul, Thomas Willis distinguished between neural circuitry responsible for reflex behaviour and that responsible for cognitively or consciously mediated behaviour. This afforded Willis a non-arbitrary basis for distinguishing between animals with thought and consciousness and those without, a methodology which retains currency for neuroscience today

    Kurzfassung: The article analyses the morphological means used by the Slovenian dialects of Friuli in adapting loan verbs to their aspectual system in comparison to the traditional means of expressing verbal aspect in the indigenous Slavic lexicon. In relation to verbs of Slavic origin, the formation of aspectual pairs was mainly realised by means of prefixation to the base verb (thereby perfectivising it), whereas with loans from the adjacent Romance varieties (Friulian, Italian, Venetian) suffixation proves more productive (yielding imperfectivisation). The analysis is carried out on the dialect of Resia as well as those from the Torre and Natisone Valleys. Despite some differences, in all three dialects there is generally a strong tendency to integrate loan verbs into the aspectual systems of these varieties. Biaspectual verbs, on the other hand, are relatively rare except for the particular case of the verbs in -inat in Resian

    Kurzfassung: Between the 14th and 15th century, the kinship and consortium systems existing within the Italian aristocratic world significantly affected the way the territorial lordship in the hands of the lay lords were structured and managed by their owners, the self-representation of lordly prerogatives, but also the political action focused on lordships, both within and outside state frameworks. This is a key but little investigated theme. If at the beginning of the period the practices connected with kinship seem to be characterised by a strong dissimilarity, we can observe process of (relative) convergence, even if significant differences remain, particularly (but not only) between the north and south of the Peninsula. A key element in understanding these differences is the different strength of central power and its structures

    Kurzfassung: This historical research starts from the books of Ambrósio Fernández Merino and explores the figure of their owner, a mysterious Spanish lawyer who lived in Florence. The result is the discovery of a little-known intellectual and of a woman who was, on the contrary, very well-known and present in the social chronicles of her time: Marie Louise La Farge. A wealthy American of French origins, divorced and married four times, she lived in London, Paris, Rome and died in Florence in 1899. After her will gave rise to a legal battle that reignited public interest on her life, she fell into oblivion. Her story resurfaced from some ownership notes found on several books of Merino’s library, books owned by Louise’s ex-husbands. The library was given to the University of Florence by the La Farge’s heirs

    Kurzfassung: This article shows that particle verbs in Burgenland Croatian – a notable morphosyntactic phenomenon of language contact – may form aspectual pairs in a typically Slavic manner. Particle-based pairs with an indigenous base verb are formed by means of suffixation, suffix opposition, suppletion or prefixation. In the case of spatial relations, by contrast, preverbs predominate over prefixes, leading to a reduction of the old inventory of verbal compounds. Nevertheless, preverbs are only rarely obligatory in the formation of aspectual pairs. In the case of borrowings, only prefixation is productive, which might be attributed to German (and Hungarian) influence. On a par with other aspectual pairs, particle-based formations may express taxis relations (sequence, simultaneity, incidence). Language contact possibly contributed to the preservation of the Contextually Conditioned Imperfective Past also in imperfective particle verbs

    Kurzfassung: This paper has two main objectives, to present some essential aspectual properties of Molise Slavic in comparison with other varieties in situations of strong language contact, and to discuss the role of language contact in each of these. Besides the grammatical categories of verbal aspect in the narrow sense, we deal with several more or less grammaticalised periphrases that also express aspectual functions or whose usage, at least, is triggered under the influence of verbal aspect. As in some other Slavic languages, having preserved traces of the original dual aspect system, Molise Slavic still displays a morphosyntactic aspectual opposition expressed by means of the perfect vs. imperfect, in addition to the Slavic derivational opposition between perfective vs. imperfective. Both oppositions combine with each other. The role of Romance in the reorganisation of these categories is discussed. The most salient innovation from a formal perspective is the imminentive calqued from Italian, but combinations of full verbs with phasal and modal verbs also show Romance influence. The results of the influence of dominant varieties on Molise Slavic in the area of aspectuality are compared with the development and behaviour of corresponding phenomena in the other languages and language families presented in this volume, in particular Resian and Slavic minority languages in Austria and Germany, Italo-Albanian, Italo-Greek, Baltic, German-based varieties in Northern Italy and Macedonian-based varieties in Albania and North Macedonia

    Kurzfassung: In his Christian and Metaphysical Meditations (1683) Malebranche develops a reflection in which the self discovers in its interiority that the interlocutor able to answer some of its questions is the divine Word. Through references to the Holy Scriptures and to Augustine, Malebranche constructs a meditative itinerary that differs from the one proposed by Descartes, as it moves from the lumière naturelle in the Cartesian sense to the lumière of the Word. In the light of these historical-theoretical data, we propose a reconstruction of the role played by interiority and meditation in certain texts by Malebranche, highlighting the moments in which he appropriated the Cartesian heritage and those in which he distanced himself from Descartes’ philosophical paradigm

The líthos is used as a ‘probe’, a hermeneutic sounding device through which to investigate cultural systems, the sedimentation of collective memory, and the role of writing itself, and it functions as a privileged access key to the author’s poetics

    Kurzfassung: The article provides a survey of aspect-tense (AT) grams in (North) Slavic and Baltic, with some account of Finnic. More recently developed grams (bound morphology and constructions) are evaluated against a deeper diachronic and larger areal backdrop in order to assess the significance of contact as a factor contributing to convergence of Slavic and Baltic varieties in the AT domain. In fact, the amount of actually converging features related to grammatical oppositions in this area is quite small; these are: (i) Prominent parallels in the strict subject- vs. object-oriented division of perfects in Slavic (mainly Belarusian) rural varieties, which must have been supported by an ancient and very stable Baltic model. (ii) Suffixation patterns of stem derivation in Aukštaitian Lithuanian resembling Slavic secondary imperfectivisation. The reasons for a generally low level of mutual influence between Baltic and Slavic are subjected to some methodological discussion

    Kurzfassung: I discuss Descartes’ metaphysics of selfhood, and relevant parts of contemporary philosophy regarding the first person. My two main concerns are the controversy that surrounds Descartes’ conception of conscientia, mistranslated as ‘consciousness’, and his conception of selfhood and its essential connection to conscientia. ‘I’-thoughts give rise to the most challenging philosophical questions. An answer to the questions concerning the peculiarities of the first person, self-identification and self-ascription, is to be found in Descartes’ notion of conscientia. His conception of selfhood insightfully informs his conception of personhood. I offer a unified account of selfhood, conscientia, the first person, and personhood anchored in the self’s authority of reason and autonomy of freedom

    Kurzfassung: The aim of this article is to discuss a change in the expression of perfective aspect in Griko. According to Rohlfs (1977), this variety of Italo-Greek only possesses a synthetic past perfective form, thus failing to mark a distinction between the past punctual and present perfect values of the perfective. And yet, some changes in the expression of this macrocategory were already taking place at the time of Rohlfs when an originally resultative periphrastic form was beginning to be used beyond its original limits. By taking into account a wider array of sources, including both early and contemporary written attestations, as well as data collected with native speakers, we show how the regrammaticalization of this analytic construction, from resultative to present perfect marker, was already under way in the late nineteenth century and is now completed for some speakers. The article concludes with a number of reflections about the role played by contact in these developments

    Kurzfassung: In recent years, Chinese students have enjoyed a prominent presence in the Italian higher education system. A recent survey conducted by Uni-Italia shows that Chinese students account for 24% of non-EU students in Italian universities. When the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) erupted in Italy at the beginning of 2020, panic spread quickly through social media; numerous fears, generated by the tide of information available online, permeated the Chinese university student community in Italy. This chapter first analyses the problems encountered by Chinese university students in Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic, and then introduces the artistic and cultural response from within that same community. Such forms of creative response also shine light, more generally, on a growing Anti-Asian sentiment in Italy. Despite the enormous challenges posed by COVID-19, Chinese university students in Italy have developed a mode of communication that builds bridges between different cultures— quite different from “mass media” or “major news outlets”—because it is personal, honest, and intimate

A research on the rich documentation available in local archives led to identify techniques and materials used to build the Naviglio, often similar to those in Leonardo’s hydraulic studies and drawings, and to show both its interaction with the surrounding territories and the continuous updates in hydraulic engineering from the XV to the XIX centuries. The persisting relevance of the canal through centuries is a testament to Leonardo’s ancient intuition

    Kurzfassung: This paper aims to demonstrate that cults and cultic institutions are a crucial element for understanding the processes producing different regional outcomes after the fall of the Hittite empire. In this paper, cults are understood as normative cosmic forces defining tempo and worldview of ancient societies. Cultic institutions can be identified as physical spaces defined by purity, charged with real and symbolic value, and led by specialists whose competence is recognised by the community. Instead of being a by-product of political complexity, they are a driving force behind the power dynamics because they are perceived as such in a bottom-up perspective, but also often by main political actors in search of legitimation of their power. This paper examines the interconnections between cultic and political institutions in the territory under the Hittite empire and in the same space after the empire’s demise. We aim to distinguish between processes of resilience, reorganisation, and transformation as they occurred in particular micro-regions previously controlled by the empire, including the Upper Euphrates, South-Central Anatolia, North-Central Anatolia, Cilicia, and the Northern Levant; this will demonstrate both the importance of such a micro-regionally defined study, as well as the shared coincidence of cultic and political institutional change. It will become evident that cultic continuity coincided with the resilience of political institutions, and changes in the cultic landscape corresponded to political reorganisations or transformations in post-Hittite Anatolia and north Syria

    Kurzfassung: While the analysis of humor, paradox, and deliberate deconstruction has generally occupied a marginal position in the study of Dostoevsky’s universe, it seems impossible to understand his poetics without pointed attention to these categories. The present book aims to fill the existing gap by focusing on the nature of ambivalent humor, paradoxicality, and methods of ‘de-automatizing’ consciousness through deconstruction, arguing that these are central elements in Dostoevsky’s creative arsenal. It is precisely the dialogical and paradoxical nature of his artistic method that enables such different and sometimes contradictory readings. Dostoevsky, who proclaimed «the excitement of compassion» as the secret of humor (in the ‘funny’ there is always sadness and even despair), more generally exposes in his writing the structural duality of all phenomena

On the one hand, it crosses historiography in a declination of temporal measurement (from the long to the short and very short term) that cannot be subsumed under today’s temporal acceleration, wiping out the past to the point of making territories we live in unrecognisable to our very eyes. On the other, it refers to an anthropology focusing on the spatial dimension and aimed at proposing a revolution of the gaze so as to reread eco-territorial dynamics no longer from the centre (cluttered by the rubble of a systemic crisis) but from the margins, to express new modes of neo-communitarian self-government

    Kurzfassung: Knowledge of accounting before the evolution of academic economic knowledge was practical knowledge. In the context of the studies about the development of accounting techniques, the debates leave out the bookkeeper. The hypothesis here is that, due to the diversification of investments on the behalf of the personal properties in late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, an expert accountant appeared as bookkeeper of the personal account books at the merchant bankers’ households. In Florence, future merchants were trained in elementary schools and later on in classes the masters of abacus. In their exercise books, the masters of abacus published, we find a lot of algebraic problems which are illustrated by accounting operations. However, at least in Florence manuals on accounting did not exist. So, the young merchant bankers and bookkeepers learned by doing. A case study about an accountant, Matteo Brandolini, who was the bookkeeper of the papal banker’s son Alamanno Salviati, shall exemplify this tendency. When the patricians and merchant bankers invested more extensively in secondary markets, they were in the need of highly qualified staff

    Kurzfassung: From Silence-Weapon to Silence-Dialogue (and Back?). Raskol’nikov’s Paradoxical Path in Crime and Punishment. The article explores the phenomenon of silence in Crime and Punishment as an expression of the reverse logic of Dostoevsky’s world. Silence in Dostoevsky escapes any attempt at a univocal interpretation, as the use of molchanie and tishina in his novels suggests. It is an emblem of the mistery of human existence because it concerns the character’s oscillation between the closure in himself and the opening to the other, between the need to express himself and the awareness of never being able to do it properly. Two levels of the functioning of silence are taken into account: as a stylistic technique used by Dostoevsky to enhance the dramatic effect of some scenes and convey the subtlest nuances of the character’s mood; and as a metaphor for Raskol’nikov’s dramatic existential journey from self-affirmation to the affirmation of the other’s being

    Kurzfassung: Onomastics and Paradox: Dostoevsky and the Collapse of the Ontological Integrity of Character. Onomastics plays a key role in Dostoevsky’s poetics: the names of most of his characters are essential to their portraits, even though these names rarely signify unambiguously. Moreover, a number of his characters are nameless and a semantic tension arises from this absence: the impossibility of “branding” the hero with a name prevents us from identifying his or her features through verbal onomastic symbolism. The portrait of such characters necessarily remains somewhat murky. It is no coincidence that the “nameless heroes” are the most paradoxical and enigmatic characters of Dostoevsky’s creative world. By denying them names, Dostoevsky seeks to destroy the inner integrity of these heroes, their identity, in order that a living, independent, and contradictory personality emerges in them

    Kurzfassung: This book, translated by Lev Blumenfeld, contains a synchronic grammar and grammatical dictionaries of Old Church Slavic. The framework is based on a substantially revised version of the classical descriptive methodology. The intent is to improve on the classical monographs by Vaillant, Diels, Lunt in the direction of utmost completeness, explicitness, and deliberate consistency between the grammatical structure, the corpus of texts (limited to the seven oldest OCS manuscripts), and the dictionaries. The grammar is intended as a set of rules that provide a complete characterization of any OCS wordform. Peculiarities in the language of each source are described as systematic departures from canonical OCS, a conventional constructed variety primarily described by the grammar. The book is addressed to linguists working in Slavic studies, as well as to specialists in the general theory of grammar, especially phonologists and morphologists. Data from the dictionaries are freely available as a searchable database online here

    Kurzfassung: This chapter focuses on the conceptual/linguistic metaphorical representations of the notion of ‘art’ in Vasari’s Le Vite. It presents a case study of select concordances for «arte» extracted from the Italian LBC corpus, and a cross-linguistic comparison with the same segments taken from two English translations (de Vere 1912-1915 and Bondanella, Bondanella 1991). Firstly, six main metaphor categories are identified in the concordances from Le Vite. Two small parallel corpora are subsequently built, collecting the ‘metaphorical’ concordances from Le Vite and their corresponding translations, and analysed to assess if and how the original metaphors were transferred to the English texts. While both English translations maintain more than half of the original metaphorical occurrences, results also highlight interesting differences between the translators’ approaches. Patterns from quantitative and qualitative investigation are discussed through select examples, considering both the functions of the original metaphorical categories and the effects of the translators’ choices on their rendition. Finally, remarks are made about the contribution of (parallel) corpus techniques to metaphor translation analysis, as emerging from this case study

    Kurzfassung: The currently prevailing development model and its effects in terms of settlement organization have negative implications especially in metropolitan contexts, where the effects of large agglomerations, speculative dynamics and neoliberal exploitation are stronger. The idea of urban bioregion tries to build an alternative to the dominant, heteronomous model of settlement organization aiming at ‘reterritorializing’ the ecological question within the processes of production of space with an integrated and multidimensional approach, careful to enhance the capacities and possibilities of local self-government. It therefore also calls into question a rethinking of the forms of politics.     Kurzfassung: The aim of this paper is to verify that in economies prior to the 18th century and from the Middle Ages onwards, there was a significant increase in the application of knowledge in the goods produced and a development of both technological and organizational innovation, i.e. "useful knowledge". It is also a question of verifying the effect of cultures, institutions and power structures on the generation of knowledge, its diffusion and its technological and productive use. In conclusion, the reduction of risk and the increase of productivity were aspects linked to the "knowledge economy" also in the pre-industrial era
