Kurzfassung: “Finally a book that examines the EU side of the Brexit story. Based on an original argument and interviews with policy-makers, Laffan and Telle explain how the EU managed to be united and successful in the negotiations with the UK.” —Frank Schimmelfennig, Professor of European Politics, ETH Zurich, Switzerland "This entertaining, persuasive and well-researched account of how the EU approached and conducted the Brexit negotiations is likely to be the definitive work on the subject." —Bobby McDonagh, Ambassador of Ireland to the United Kingdom (2009–2013) Laffan and Telle’s book is both a definitive statement on Brexit-EU relations and a clear-sighted investigation of how the EU may cope with future tests, ranging from climate change to Ukraine enlargement. —Liesbet Hooghe, Professor of Political Science, UNC-Chapel Hill , USA This book is the first detailed analysis of how the EU responded to Brexit. It is an important reference point for future studies of the Brexit negotiations. The authors conducted in-depth interviews with key institutional players in Brussels and in several member states to document how the EU handled the first-ever exit of one of its members. The Brexit shock came at a time when the EU had barely recovered from the Euro crisis and was struggling to manage an unprecedented inflow of refugees. The immediate fear was that Brexit might be the final straw that broke the camel ’s back. Eurosceptics were jubilant, and Europhiles were distraught. In reality, the EU reacted to Brexit with resolve and a determination to protect the polity. The book argues that getting the process right was crucial. The EU mobilised its collective capacity to negotiate effectively and with one voice. Brigid Laffan is Emeritus Professor at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. Until her retirement in August 2021, Prof. Laffan was Director and Professor at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies. Stefan Telle worked as Research Associate in the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute, Italy.

Kurzfassung: While the ambitious objectives outlined in the EU’s Green Deal aim at making Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, national implementation greatly varies depending on local geographies, history, culture, economics, and politics. This book analyses Member States’ and EU neighbours’ national efforts to combat climate change. It subsequently draws on these factors to highlight local challenges, tensions, and opportunities on the road towards climate neutrality. In the context of inter-country dependencies following Russia’s war against Ukraine, it addresses strategic questions regarding EU integration, the transformation of our economies, the reduction of energy dependencies, and public perception of the above. The book also makes concrete recommendations, in various policy areas, on how individual countries and the EU as a whole should deal with the climate crisis. Kurzfassung: “France has been the target of more terrorist attacks than any other Western country. In this major contribution to the burgeoning new field of ‘terrorism studies’, these attacks are subjected to intense social scientific analysis.” – Jolyon Howorth, Harvard University, USA “This timely and important volume presents a compelling analysis of terrorism's impacts and the responses needed to counteract these effects.” – Bruce Hoffman, Georgetown University, USA “Taking a very original perspective, this precious collection investigates the learning and healing processes that followed the Charlie Hebdo’s attacks.” – Donatella della Porta, Scuola Normale Superiore, Italy “This fine, wide-ranging collection on the 2015 Paris attacks takes stock of what we know while charting future directions of research.” – Stéphane Gerson, New York University, USA “By bringing together perspectives from political science, sociology, psychology, and media studies, the editors produce the most complete treatment of a society’s reaction to these horrific events that I have seen.” – Marc J. Hetherington, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, USA From Charlie Hebdo to the Bataclan, the terrorist attacks perpetrated in Paris in 2015 shocked France and the world. This book offers a unique interdisciplinary approach on the complex responses of French society to these events: from the individual level (survivors of the Bataclan attack, emotional citizens paying homage to the victims, French Muslims) to the meso level of civic association and web communities, and the macro level of the State and public opinion. Florence Faucher is Professor of Political Science at Sciences Po, Paris, France and Associate Fellow at Nuffield College, University of Oxford, UK. Gérôme Truc is Research Fellow in Sociology at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), France. He is the author of Shell Shocked: The Social Response to Terrorist Attacks (2018).

Kurzfassung: Right-wing Terrorism. Still an Underestimated Threat -- What is a "Lone Wolf"? -- Offenders and Terrorism. Ideology, Motives, Objectives -- Radicalisation in Our Very Midst and in Virtual Rooms and Spaces -- Counter-Strategies and Prevention -- Conclusions. .
Kurzfassung: As the attacks in Norway, Munich and most recently Christchurch have shown: a new threat is now shaking liberal Western societies. Radicalized right-wing extremists – so-called lone wolves – are engaging in individually planned terror attacks. Written by an expert on terrorism and populism, this book highlights the dynamics of this new breed of terrorism. By providing in-depth insights into the biographies of individual perpetrators, it illustrates the changing profile of the typical lone terrorist. This new kind of terrorist engages in violence without being a member of a party or organization, yet is radicalized by a global right-wing subculture that communicates in virtual networks. This startling and well-written book reveals the ideological roots of lone wolf terrorism and urges governments and civil society to take the threat seriously and implement suitable countermeasures.

Conclusion: Struggling over Sovereignty.
Kurzfassung: This book provides an accessible and timely analysis of how the British discourse on Europe has evolved over the past forty years. It focuses on three key episodes: the 1975 referendum on the UK’s continued membership of the European Economic Community; the 1992-3 debates on ratification of the Maastricht Treaty; and the more recent proto-referendum debates sparked by David Cameron’s Bloomberg speech in January 2013. Using a discourse-analytical approach, the book analyses how political and media voices seek to delineate a British sense of self from a Continental other. Importantly, the book also pays close attention to the rising prominence of immigration issues within the British discourse on Europe. John Todd is a PhD candidate at the University of Oslo’s Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, Norway. He holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and has worked in a range of policy roles within the civil service in Belfast and London.

Kurzfassung: This book presents a systematic collation of the regional and global dimensions of the leadership role of BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). It analyses the rising regional and global leadership of BRICS, using specific benchmarks to gauge the nature of this leadership. The elements examined include willingness to lead, the capacity to do as much, and the degree to which the given actor is accepted as a leader both within and beyond its region. The chapters in the book capture the nature of trends in regional and global leadership within the contexts of a changing international order. It is taken for granted that Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are now engineering a unique pool of governance that is seeking alternatives to the current order of global economic and political affairs. The fact that these countries have jointly decided to forge ahead with the BRICS constellation of states that is now taking consequential decisions such as the creation of the BRICS’ New Development Bank, is not to be treated lightly. In this book the majority of papers take a step back and systematically analyse the real state of the leadership that is provided by the BRICS on a litany of regionally and globally relevant issues. While no one doubts the fact that these countries have the capacity to provide leadership especially in their various regions on many issues, what remains moot is whether they are willing and capable to do so at the global level. Even in those cases where there is the willingness and capacity, the book argues that the acceptance of such leadership by potential followers is not always a given. .

In light of the refugee crises in the Mediterranean and the responses on the part of EU member states, this volume presents an in-depth reflection on European border practices and their political, social and economic consequences. Approaching borders as concepts in flux, the authors identify three main trends: the rise of security technologies such as the EUROSUR system, the continued externalization of EU security governance such as border mission training in third states, and the unfolding dynamics of accountability. The contributions show that internal security cooperation in Europe is far from consolidated, since both political oversight mechanisms and the definition of borders remain in flux. This edited volume makes a timely and interdisciplinary contribution to the ongoing academic and political debate on the future of open borders and legitimate security governance in Europe. It offers a valuable resource for scholars in the fields of international security and migration studies, as well as for practitioners dealing with border management mechanisms.

Kurzfassung: Introduction.- EU Decision-Making: An Overview of the System -- Why Do We Have the EU Institutions?_ Legislative Procedures -- Delegated and Implementing Acts -- Making the Internal Market Work: The EU and Other Actors -- Economic Governance -- Foreign and Security Policy -- Conclusions -- Annex -- Index.
Kurzfassung: This book presents in a concise and accessible way why the EU institutional system exists in its present form, how the EU fits into the world as a system of governance, and who is involved in EU policy processes. It outlines the historical context which has shaped the EU system, gives a summary of the system's basic principles and structures, and describes its actors, procedures and instruments. The main theme is to show that EU decision-making is not just a matter of action at some higher and separate level, of ‘them and us’, but rather that it involves different forms of cooperation between European, national and regional authorities, as well as interaction between public and private actors. Numerous short case studies illustrate how people’s day-to-day activities are affected by EU decisions, and how individuals’ concerns are represented in the decision-making process. The book provides insights and examples which will be very helpful for all students of European integration. It will also be a valuable resource for European citizens wishing to understand the basic realities and rationales, as well as some of the dilemmas, behind EU policy-making.

Kurzfassung: By analysing a wide range of empirical research into leadership, this book provides a composite portrait of frequent characteristics, such as personality and demeanour, that influence both the success and popularity of political leaders. Through the lenses of mass psychology and collective behaviour sociology, the author offers fascinating observations on political leadership which reveal a coherent pattern. In our choice of and support for leaders, we still seem to be guided by unconscious or instinctive preferences. Evolutionary psychologists have labelled this ‘CALP’ for ‘Cognitive Ancestral Leadership Prototype’. Length, symmetry, face form, voice pitch, eye blinking and more turn out to play a role – even today - alongside personality and style. Each chapter of the book offers a case study to illustrate these observations, including Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan, Nicolas Sarkozy, and Boris Johnson. This book is accessibly written to appeal to students of politics, psychology and sociology, as well as the wider interested reader. .

Kurzfassung: ‘While there has been much talk in both scientific and political arenas, we still know little about the dynamics and day-to-day functioning of Switzerland's "bilateral way". Jenni's excellent book fills a gap. The innovative application of the "differentiated integration" framework to a rich collection of data makes an important contribution to both the Swiss and European literature.’ – Prof. Pascal Sciarini, Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations, University of Geneva, Switzerland ‘The book addresses very topical and hitherto under-investigated questions on the basis of an impressive database. It makes a major contribution to the existing literature both for conceptualizing the notion of differentiated integration at the level of regulatory Europeanization and for our knowledge of the scope and dynamism of European provisions in the Swiss legal order.’ – Prof. Sandra Lavenex, University of Geneva, Switzerland ‘Sabine Jenni provides a systematic long-term analysis of the impact of European integration on Swiss legislation. She finds that, although Switzerland is not an EU member, it is subject to the same or functionally equivalent institutional dynamics as the member states. This study makes an important contribution to our understanding of differentiated integration – and a highly topical one in light of the ‘Brexit’ debate.’ – Prof. Frank Schimmelfennig, ETH Zurich, Switzerland This book analyses Switzerland’s European policies using the concept of differentiated European integration, providing a new and original perspective on the country. This analytical approach focuses on the similarities between Switzerland's EU policies and the integration of EU member states. The latter have often been the focus of research as Switzerland is the last Western European country not to have become a member of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA). The book claims that Switzerland’s position on the European integration map is different in terms of degree from many EU member states, but not different in kind. The cornerstone of the book is new empirical data quantitatively measuring Switzerland’s differentiated integration during the period 1990 – 2010. The data rely on the sectoral agreements Switzerland concluded with the EU and the voluntary incorporation of EU law into domestic legislation. The book shows, among other findings, that over time Swiss European policies have begun to resemble integration policies and that the more they did so, the more dynamically they evolved. Sabine Jenni is Associated Researcher at ETH Zurich and holds teaching assignments at the University of Lucerne, Switzerland. She also works as a Project Coordinator for artasfoundation.

Kurzfassung: ‘This highly original text makes an important contribution. Well-structured and with clear arguments, it is both authoritative and readable. Strongly recommended.’ -Dr Christopher M. Davidson, Reader in Middle East Politics in the School of Government and International Affairs, Durham University, UK ‘The U.S. security relationship with Europe is an issue of considerable importance for European order. This book provides a cogent analysis of the American commitment to the NATO alliance over the last quarter of a century, from the end of the Cold War to the Ukraine crisis. Yanan Song provides a systematic and thorough study of the wellsprings of U.S. thinking towards NATO and its European allies.’ -Professor Adrian Hyde-Price, Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg, Sweden This book examines the continuing US commitments to NATO in the post-Cold War era. The initial focus is on the recommitment decisions of the Clinton administration. It also extensively explores the US operations in Kosovo, Afghanistan and, in particular, Libya. The case study on Libya is especially important in exploring the Obama administration’s understanding of the purpose of NATO in the context of current economic pressures, domestic US debates about post-War on Terror interventions, and of increasing American preoccupation with Pacific rather than European security. The author utilises substantial archival research and interviews with policymakers and academics, including Ambassador Kethleen Stephens, former Special Assistant to the President Stephen J. Flanagan, and former Director for Non-proliferation at National Security Council Robert S. Litwak. This book is ideal for postgraduate researchers and academics in US foreign policy, foreign policy decision-making, transatlantic relations and NATO, as well as a great use to undergraduate students. Yanan Song received her PhD from the School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University, UK.
