Abstract: This edited volume examines the cases of four African military leaders who had enormous impact on the continent and beyond. These military officers, and later heads of state -- Jerry Rawlings of Ghana; Moammar Gaddafi of Libya; Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso; and Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt – were provocative and polarizing figures, beloved domestically but mostly viewed with suspicion and hostility by foreign governments. This volume studies these leaders as a group, engaging in a critical but systematic examination of their personalities, leadership styles, official performance, legacies, and their continuing impact on the future and political destiny of the continent. Providing a survey of controversial but important African political figures, this volume will be of use to scholars and students in the social sciences, especially those interested in African history, African studies, military science, Black studies, political science, leadership studies, and the politics of developing nations.

Abstract: This book focusses on the interaction between different kinds of violence and radicalization. Current research criticizes linear models of radicalization and assumes that individuals are involved in radical actions even without extremist preferences. In recent years, the research on radicalization and the use of violence has increasingly been focused on this phenomenon of individual radicalization. However, radicalization is a manifold phenomenon on various levels and exists in miscellaneous variations. The book provides an impetus for analysing social situations that contain the potential for the emergence of conflict. This is done through new outlooks on the role of emotions, the influence of narratives and representations, the connection between (non)violence and emancipation and, lastly, new approaches and perspectives on deradicalization.

Abstract: This book examines law and governance implications in relation to maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS). Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, it focuses on a wide array of timely, topical and thorny issues, including naval warfare and security, seaworthiness and techno-regulatory assessments, global environmental change, autonomous passenger transportation, as well as liability and insurance. It also considers selected national and regional developments. The book provides an insight into the role of innovation-diplomacy as the driving force that could expedite the transition from automation to autonomy. After navigating through the complex law and governance landscape, it concludes by assessing critical findings for further consideration. The book will appeal to scholars and students of maritime technology, law and governance. Abstract: “This book is essential reading. Against the backdrop of a 15-year democratic recession, the question of why some countries become more democratic while others see growing authoritarianism is one of the most pressing of our era. This inspired volume cleverly leverages a comparative approach to provide new insights into the sources of democratisation and backsliding, making an important and timely contribution.” —Nic Cheeseman, Professor of Democracy, University of Birmingham, UK “This book is a delightful guide and a remarkable must-read for all those concerned with the decline of liberal democracies. This new book by a group of scholars dealing with the topic for quite a time is both a follow-up to their past tales about democracies across cultures and continents and a brand-new approach to its contemporary problems. The theoretical arguments are backed by convincingly constructed comparative country case-studies. It is accessible and fascinating. This book will be widely read by students, social scientists, policymakers, and—I hope—politicians.” —Radoslaw Markowski, Professor of Political Science, Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland“ This book identifies the main factors shaping the fortunes of democracy globally. Why do some democracies in the same region and presumably subject to similar global influences remain stable while others regress? This is the question guiding all the authors of this edited book. In the search for answers, they examine 16 democracies in paired and tripled comparisons in sub-Saharan Africa, North and Latin America, East Asia, Western and Central Europe, along with two polar cases. Insights from the perspectives of history, political science, economics and international relations are offered along with a sketch of possible future scenarios. Combining approaches anchored in the analytical tradition with empirical case studies and given the broad range of topics, this book is bound to be of interest not only to students and practitioners of democracy but also to the broader academic and general readership. Abstract: This Handbook provides the most comprehensive account of energy governance in Europe, examining both energy governance at the European level and the development of energy policy in 30 European countries. Authored by leading scholars, the first part of the book offers a broad overview of the topics of energy research, including theories of energy transitions, strategies and norms of energy policy, governance instruments in the field, and challenges of energy governance. In the second part, it examines the internal and external dimensions of energy governance in the European Union. The third part presents in-depth country studies, which investigate national trajectories of energy policy, including an analysis of the policy instruments and coordination mechanisms for energy transitions. It closes with a comparative analysis of national energy governance. This book is a definitive resource for scholars in energy and climate research as well as decision makers in national governments and EU institutions.

Abstract: This book offers a unique and timely political analysis of war, international law and human rights, and the important interconnections among them. It questions why war features as a foundational problem in contemporary world affairs and explores how international law is used to manage this and other types of political violence. Challenging conventional thinking that understands war as a problem to be solved and law as an antidote to organized but unruly violence, this book situates the promotion and protection of human rights within the wider context of the modernist project, particularly during the epoch of the Anthropocene. Taking a critical perspective that draws on concepts found in the work of Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu and Bruno Latour, this book casts new light on the ways in which the politics of war, law and rights produces profound insecurities for the human species as well as for other life forms and life systems on this planet. Damien Rogers is Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at Massey University, Auckland. A graduate of four universities, he holds a PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the Australian National University and a PhD in Law from the University of Waikato.

Abstract: This book provides a comprehensive approach of the media, journalism and politics in Sub-Saharan Francophone Africa. The author argues that there are common features that the media and journalism share in the seventeen countries of Francophone Africa and these make the local media systems different from what they are in neighboring English-speaking African countries, and in the rest of the world. The approach of the media in French-speaking Africa has not only to be “de-Westernized”, but also to step out of general overviews considering “African media." This project shows the historical, political, economic and sociological characteristics of the media systems of seventeen French-speaking countries of Africa. Abstract: ‘Politics of Violence and Fear in MENA: The Case of Egypt’ explores the state-orchestrated violence in Egypt, Syria, and Turkey justified by vaguely defined terrorist threats. It analyses the “wars on terror” as cases of lengthy securitisation processes that reinforced and legitimised autocratic practices of oppression in each country. Paying particular attention to Egypt’s “war on terror” that began 1981, the book looks into how and with what implications such securitisation processes are upheld throughout lengthy periods of time. Reworking the traditional securitisation theory, this book offers a novel securitisation model (the TER-model) that addresses the questions of securitisation durability and is applicable in non-liberal empirical contexts. The monograph is ideal for graduate students, researchers and policy makers in the fields of political science, International Relations, and Middle Eastern Studies. Helena Reimer-Burgrova is an independent researcher and author. She is a former associate researcher at the Institute for International Relations in Prague (CZ). She studied in Pilsen (CZ), Amman (JO), Cambridge (UK), and Munich (GE), where she earned her PhD at the Institute of Political Science at Bundeswehr University Munich.

Abstract: Chapter 1: Introduction -- Chapter 2: The context: The EU and Ukraine between Slavophiles and NATO -- Chapter 3: EU Diplomacy: foreign policy response to the war and future EU-Russia relations -- Chapter 4: Law: the use of force, EU sanctions, and assistance to Ukraine.
Abstract: This book offers a nuanced, insightful and multi-disciplinary analysis of Russia’s war against Ukraine and EU’s position vis-à-vis this war. It is both an excellent book on the war specifically and EU foreign policy more generally. The book is, indeed, a must-read for now, but also a must-keep for the future. - Gustav Schaldemose, Head of Security Unit, The Prime Minister's Office, Denmark This book offers an accessible and rigorous introduction to the context, diplomacy, and law of the European Union’s response to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The book explores how the EU responded to the war in the initial months, and is based on research carried out on Russian and European political, diplomatic, and legal texts. Presenting a unique interdisciplinary perspective, the book delves into topics such as the EU diplomatic response, the Ukrainian application for membership of the EU, the policy and legal aspects of EU sanctions against Russia and Belarus. Additionally, the book examines the significance of the EU’s unprecedented political response for the constitutional structure of the EU, and for the strategy toward the Russia of the future. Luigi Lonardo is a Lecturer in EU law at University College Cork, Ireland, and a visiting Lecturer in European Foreign Security and Defence Policy at Sciences Po in Paris, France. Previously he has been a Lecturer and visiting Lecturer in EU law at King’s College London and at the University of Westminster. He has published articles on EU foreign policy in the European Law Review, the European Constitutional Law Review, European Papers, and the European Foreign Affairs Review.

Religion in our days: Between return, revival and renewal -- A shifting global scenery: The age of re-globalization -- Re-globalization: An array of factors shaking the fundamentals of neoliberal globalization -- Religious re-globalization rhetoric from the United Nations -- The changing European-Western setting: Post-postmodernity and meta-modernity as carriers of a renaissance of values towards “everyday spirituality”?.
Abstract: This book provides a concise introduction into twenty-one trends that are transforming the role of religion and spirituality in “re-globalizing” societies. In referring to processes of “re-globalization”, the book draws attention to profound ongoing changes in the patterns and mechanisms of contemporary globalization. Inter- and transdisciplinary in its approach, clearly structured, and easy to read, the book analyzes the impact of religious self-understanding, rhetoric, and practice on five core fields: economics, politics, culture, demography, and technology. In turn, it describes the effects of these five fields on religion and spirituality themselves. This book represents a broad, encompassing overview of the main transformations that religion is undergoing today. Roland Benedikter combines a “big picture” approach with a keen attention to the details of specific case studies. With its clear and accessible structure and timely examples, this book is ideally suited for students of international relations and religious studies, and will also appeal to researchers engaged in those fields and to interested general readers. The book is also apt to serve as an encompassing basis for contemporary debates in civil society, including both grassroots and expert discussions. Roland Benedikter is Co-Head of the Center for Advanced Studies at Eurac Research in Bolzano, Italy; Research Professor of Multidisciplinary Political Analysis in residence at the Willy Brandt Centre at Wroclaw University, Poland; and Member of the Future Circle of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research for the German Federal Government.

Abstract: Introduction -- The basic parameters of the dispute -- The Aegean dispute in the context of international treaties and international courts’ judgements. A critical appraisal -- The formation of the dispute in the 1970s and 1980s -- The Post-Cold War era -- The rise of the AKP party and Turkey’s grand strategy in the 21th century -- The 2019-2020 maritime borders delimitation agreements in the Eastern Mediterranean and their implications -- A paradigm change in the governance of the Aegean Sea -- Conclusions.
Abstract: The study provides an extensive legal, geopolitical and historical analysis of all controversial issues making up the Greek-Turkish maritime dispute: the delimitation of territorial waters, the national airspace, the delineation of exclusive economic zones and continental shelf as well as the issue of military presence on the Eastern Aegean islands and its relation to the Greek sovereignty over them. By immersing thoroughly into international jurisprudence, international treaties and historical facts, the book offers a detailed survey of legal precedents and legal regimes over similar issues worldwide. In this way, the reader has the opportunity to ascertain where every single legal and historical argument has been drawn from and its relevance in the international jurisprudence. Consequently, it follows the evolution of the dispute together with all its twists from 1973 to 2022 that saw a new low in the historically tense Greek-Turkish relationship. The book finally re-examines the dispute in the light of the new green energy geopolitics and the ongoing climate crisis and comes up with some suggestions for an alternative paradigm of co-existence in the Aegean Sea which in the author’s view is urgent and inevitable. .

Abstract: This book analyses the reasons for women’s participation in the various Lebanese and Palestinian militias involved in the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990). Whilst most existing accounts of the Civil War in Lebanon either overlook the roles and experiences of women entirely or focus on women as victims or peacemakers only, ‘Women and the Lebanese Civil War’ highlights that women were involved as militants (and often also as fighters) in all of the militias partaking in the war. Analysing individual motivations, organisational characteristics, security-related aspects and societal factors, the book explains why women were included as fighters in some of the militias but not in others. Based on extensive fieldwork in Lebanon, the book is the first comprehensive study of female perpetrators and supporters of political violence during the Lebanese Civil War. Beyond the case of Lebanon, it questions widespread assumptions about the roles of women at times of violent conflict and war. Dr Jennifer Philippa Eggert is an academic, NGO researcher and practitioner. Her work focuses on violent conflict, development and migration, with a focus on gender, faith and local actors. She has worked in Europe, the Middle East, South Asia and the USA.

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic is an international event whose impact has been acutely felt by almost everyone across the globe. Indeed, currently reading this, it is highly unlikely that your own life has not been significantly impacted by COVID-19. This book offers one of the first analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic and its potential impact from the perspective of International Political Theory. It promises normative interpretation and analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic and to map potential political orders that may emerge in the post-pandemic world. It seeks to give initial insight into how the shockwaves from this event will impact upon our political and international norms. The book focuses on the normative questions of: can emergency powers be used to preserve society from the virus without necessitating a transition to more authoritarian political norms? Will COVID-19 prove a catalyst for Chinese Socialism to challenge, and potentially usurp, liberalism as the dominant international political norm? What changes to liberalism ought to be made as a result of the pandemic? What direction should liberalism take in the post-pandemic world? Ruairidh J Brown is Head of International Relations and Political Science at Forward College, Portugal. He is currently based at Forward’s Lisbon Campus, where he teaches International Political Thought and International Relations.

Abstract: This textbook offers an interpretive overview of the history of the Latin American region since the mid-eighteenth century. Its central focus is the struggle of ordinary folks to control their daily lives. It examines the social, economic, and political institutions Latin Americans built and rebuilt, such as families, governments (from village to national levels), churches, political parties, labor unions, schools, and armies, through the lives of the people forged them. It explores the texture of everyday life. Mark Wasserman taught Latin American History at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, USA, for forty years. He is the author of four books on Mexico and two bestselling textbooks on Latin American History. He has won several major fellowships and awards for his scholarship. Covering the sweep of Latin American history from the perspective of the everyday experiences of the people who made it, Modern Latin America, tells the story of the forces that shaped the region and how people from various walks of life negotiated the changing dynamics of race, class, gender, political conflict and power to create the societies of today. Integrating current scholarship, the book covers the major themes and events of Latin American history while breaking away from a dry history of states and institutions to provide a window on the dynamics of how people shaped, were impacted by, and lived their history. Paul Hart, Professor of History and Director of the Center for International Studies, Texas State University, USA Modern Latin America: Everyday Life and Politics 1800 to the Present is an engaging account that effectively weaves the economic, cultural, social, and political histories of the region. Wasserman has a keen eye, recognizing the challenges that Latin America’s diverse populations have confronted over the centuries. “Nature’s Way,” one of the special features in each chapter, is a welcome addition at a time when disease and climate change surround us. Sandra Mendiola García, Associate Professor of History, University of North Texas, USA.
