    Kurzfassung: Following networks of mothers in London and Paris, the author profiles the narratives of women who breastfeed their children to full term, typically a period of several years, as part of an 'attachment parenting' philosophy. These mothers talk about their decision to continue breastfeeding as 'the natural thing to do': 'evolutionarily appropriate', 'scientifically best' and 'what feels right in their hearts'. Through a theoretical focus on knowledge claims and accountability, the author frames these accounts within a wider context of 'intensive parenting', arguing that parenting practices - infant feeding in particular - have become a highly moralized affair for mothers, practices which they feel are a critical aspect of their 'identity work'. The book investigates why, how and with what implications some of these mothers describe themselves as 'militant lactivists' and reflects on wider parenting culture in the UK and France. Discussing gender, feminism and activism, this study contributes to kinship and family studies by exploring how relatedness is enacted in conjunction to constructions of the self.

    Kurzfassung: This edited collection is a major contribution to the current development of a 'material turn' in the social sciences and humanities.  It does so by exploring new understandings of how power is made up and exercised by examining the role of material infrastructures in the organization of state power and the role of material cultural practices in the organization of colonial forms of governance.  A diverse range of historical examples is drawn on in illustrating these concerns - from the role of territorial engineering projects in seventeenth-century France through the development of the postal system in nineteenth-century Britain to the relations between the state and road-building in contemporary Peru, for example.  The colonial contexts examined are similarly varied, ranging from the role of photographic practices in the constitution of colonial power in India and the measurement of the bodies of the colonized in French colonial practices to the part played by the relations between museums and expeditions in the organization of Australian forms of colonial rule.  These specific concerns are connected to major critical re-examination of the limits of the earlier formulations of cultural materialism and the logic of the 'cultural turn'.The collection brings together a group of key international scholars whose work has played a leading role in debates in and across the fields of history, visual culture studies, anthropology, geography, cultural studies, museum studies, and literary studies.

    Kurzfassung: Mit Stefano Guazzos Dialog La Civil Conversazione erschien 1574 in Brescia ein Werk, das den Gesellschaftsfragen im Europa der Fruehen Neuzeit entscheidende Impulse gab. Indem er alle sozialen Schichten in seine Ueberlegungen einbezieht, betont Guazzo das ueberstaendische Ideal einer umfassenden Kultivierung und Vervollkommnung des Menschen. Damit treibt er die Demokratisierung von Anstand und Bildung voran, die ihm als das geeignete Mittel der Verstaendigung zwischen den einzelnen sozialen Staenden und innerhalb derselben erscheinen. Er widerlegt Vorurteile, betont den Adel der Tugend und relativiert den Vorrang des Geburtsadels, um den menschlichen Beziehungen eine gerechte Grundlage zu geben. Der Schluessel dazu ist die civil conversazione, der Guazzo eine moralische wie erkenntnisfoerdernde Kraft zuschreibt und diese im Verlauf seines Dialogs vorfuehrt. Guazzo spielt im Kulturtransfer zwischen Italien und Frankreich eine herausragende Rolle, zu der in dieser Untersuchung erstmals praezise Informationen gegeben werden. Zudem wird gezeigt, wie Guazzos Vorstellungen in unterschiedlichen Stroemungen des 17. Jahrhunderts ihren Niederschlag finden.
