Abstract: The purpose of this book is to introduce researchers and practitioners to recent advances and applications of Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS). Random sampling is the key of the MCS technique. The 11 chapters of this book collectively illustrates how such a sampling technique is exploited to solve difficult problems or analyze complex systems in various engineering and science domains. Issues related to the use of MCS including goodness-of-fit, uncertainty evaluation, variance reduction, optimization, and statistical estimation are discussed and examples of solutions are given. Novel applications of MCS are demonstrated in financial systems modeling, estimation of transition behavior of organic molecules, chemical reaction, particle diffusion, kinetic simulation of biophysics and biological data, and healthcare practices. To enlarge the accessibility of this book, both field-specific background materials and field-specific usages of MCS are introduced in most chapters. The aim of this book is to unify knowledge of MCS from different fields to facilitate research and new applications of MCS

Abstract: This book describes different perspectives of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The approach includes aspects of molecular epidemiology, particularly molecular features that influence the genesis and prognosis of the disease. Some aspects of the prognosis of lymphoblastic leukemias are very detailed, highlighting the use of molecular biology in the early identification of complications that may occur in diseased patients. The authors of the present book conform a Mexican group who identifies the causes of leukemia, and they summarize their experience in research, results and proposals for future studies. A causal model is included in which the authors hypothesized the origin of acute lymphoblastic leukemias, particularly in children. This hypothesis can be useful to better understand other cancers during childhood. This book will help the reader to identify different molecular aspects involved in leukemia, and its relation to the development and evolution of the disease

Abstract: Vasculitis, an inflammation of blood vessels, can be idiopathic or secondary to other conditions. Infections may also mimic idiopathic vasculitis, and the differential diagnosis is of paramount importance for the practicing physician. Vasculitides are not rare diseases. In fact, some vasculitides, such as giant cell arteritis, cutaneous vasculitis, and ANCA-associated vasculitis are relatively common in everyday practice. Vasculitis may rapidly lead to organ failure, and put patient's life in danger. Therefore, physicians of different specialties should diagnose vasculitis early, because early institution of treatment is crucial for the favorable outcome. In recent years progress has been made in the pathophysiology and treatment of vasculitis. This book reflects all new advances in pathogenetic mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment of different types of vasculitis. The international panel of authors helps in achieving a balanced view on different aspects of vasculitis

Abstract: Endocarditis is an inflammation of the lining of the heart and valves. It can be due to a non-infectious cause but when the inflammation is associated with an infection, usually bacterial, it is known as infective endocarditis. It is typically characterized by the development of a large septic thrombus on one of the cardiac valves. As this thrombus grows, it can lead to valve failure or may fragment forming a septic embolus that is associated with high mortality if the target of the embolus is the brain, heart or lung. This book reviews multi-organ complications associated with Infective endocarditis including significant recent advances in molecular mechanisms underlying thrombus formation on the cardiac valve, anti-microbial treatment and surgery

Abstract: This book summarizes the advances and new concepts introduced in the last years on peritoneal dialysis (PD) and its complications. PD therapy is a renal replacement peritoneal membrane using a semi-permeable barrier to liquids and solutes. The abdominal cavity with all its components, mesothelial cells, fat tissue, immune system components and others are activated by the PD fluids that although every time are more biocompatible, induce production of molecules with the local and systemic effects. Locally there is a thickening of the peritoneal membrane leading to the failure of this and where the transdifferentiation of mesothelial cells plays a key role. Systemically activating abdominal cavity appears to be involved in atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypertension, renal bone disease pathway and others

Abstract: There has been a remarkable difference in the research and development regarding gas turbine technology for transportation and power generation. The former remains substantially florid and unaltered with respect to the past as the superiority of air-breathing engines compared to other technologies is by far immense. On the other hand, the world of gas turbines (GTs) for power generation is indeed characterized by completely different scenarios in so far as new challenges are coming up in the latest energy trends, where both a reduction in the use of carbon-based fuels and the raising up of renewables are becoming more and more important factors. While being considered a key technology for base-load operations for many years, modern stationary gas turbines are in fact facing the challenge to balance electricity from variable renewables with that from flexible conventional power plants. The book intends in fact to provide an updated picture as well as a perspective view of some of the abovementioned issues that characterize GT technology in the two different applications: aircraft propulsion and stationary power generation. Therefore, the target audience for it involves design, analyst, materials and maintenance engineers. Also manufacturers, researchers and scientists will benefit from the timely and accurate information provided in this volume. The book is organized into three main sections including 10 chapters overall: (i) Gas Turbine and Component Performance, (ii) Gas Turbine Combustion and (iii) Fault Detection in Systems and Materials

Abstract: Longmire, called it a "hostile" organ because it welcomes malignant cells and sepsis so warmly, bleeds so copiously, and is often the ?rst organ to be injured in blunt abdominal trauma. To balance these negative factors, the liver has two great attributes: its ability to regenerate after massive loss of substance, and its ability, in many cases, to forgive insult. This book covers a wide spectrum of topics including, history of liver surgery, surgical anatomy of the liver, techniques of liver resection, benign and malignant liver tumors, portal hypertension, and liver trauma. Some important topics were covered in more than one chapter like liver trauma, portal hypertension and pediatric liver tumors

Abstract: During the last ten to fifteen years the developments in polymer science has been striking attention and undergone important changes. From rather specialized subject intended for engineers interested in certain definite fields, it has developed into one of the fundamental disciplines common to several branches of engineering and science. To serve this purpose, the subject materials have been prepared to treat a comprehensive aspects of polymer science. Following this trend, a number of rigorous books have discussed different types of polymers with great precision and elegance and at relatively high levels of abstraction, but none is complementary. A position midway between the older, traditional approach in engineering and the recent, somewhat formal expositions seems to be evolving

Abstract: Recently statistical knowledge has become an important requirement and occupies a prominent position in the exercise of various professions. In the real world, the processes have a large volume of data and are naturally multivariate and as such, require a proper treatment. For these conditions it is difficult or practically impossible to use methods of univariate statistics. The wide application of multivariate techniques and the need to spread them more fully in the academic and the business justify the creation of this book. The objective is to demonstrate interdisciplinary applications to identify patterns, trends, association sand dependencies, in the areas of Management, Engineering and Sciences. The book is addressed to both practicing professionals and researchers in the field

Abstract: Utilization of electrodiagnosis; namely electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies, late responses, repetitive nerve stimulation techniques, quantitative EMG and evoked potentials, has long been discussed in many text books as basic principles. However the usage of electroneuromyography is rather new in some aspects when compared with tasks of daily practise. This book, we believe, will cover and enlighten those aspects where electrodiagnosis has begun to play important roles nowadays

Abstract: Breeding of crop plants to make them more adapted to human agricultural systems has been on-going during domestication the last 10 000 years. However, only recently with the invention of the Mendelian principles of genetics and the subsequent development of quantitative genetics during the twentieth century has such genetic crop improvement become based on a general theory. During the last 50 years plant breeding has entered a molecular era based on molecular tools to analyse DNA, RNA and proteins and associate such molecular results with plant phenotype. These marker trait associations develop fast to enable more efficient breeding. However, they still leave a major part of breeding to be performed through selection of phenotypes using quantitative genetic tools. The ten chapters of this book illustrate this development

Abstract: The mode of action by radiation is postulated to be the production of double strand breaks of DNA. The repair of double strand breaks occurs through non homologous end joining through acetylation of histone proteins by histone acetyltransferases (HATs). The fixation of double strand breaks through HAT inhibitors is a promising application for radiation sensitization in the clinic. P53 is a tumour suppressor gene and its mutation has been implicated in 60% of human cancers. As one of the pivotal anticancer genes, P53 controls the transcription and translation of a series of genes. The kinetics of DNA double strand break generation and their co relation to P53 status, ATM and ARF activation are computed and modelled for understanding the potential of such research

Abstract: Molecular Toxinology has been consolidated as a scientific area focused on the intertwined description of several aspects of animal toxins. In an inquiring biotechnological world, animal toxins appear as an invaluable source for the discovery of therapeutic polypeptides. Animal toxins rely on specific chemical interactions with their partner molecule to exert their biological actions. The comprehension of how molecules interact and recognize their target is essential for the rational exploration of bioactive polypeptides as therapeutics. Investigation on the mechanism of molecular interaction and recognition offers a window of opportunity for the pharmaceutical industry and clinical medicine. Thus, this book brings examples of two interconnected themes - molecular recognition and toxinology concerning to the integration between analytical procedures and biomedical applications

Abstract: Urinary tract infections (UTI) continue to be under the most common bacterial infections worldwide. Diagnostic and treatment have substantial financial burden on society. In the USA, UTIs are responsible for more than 7 million physician visits annually and about 15% of all community-prescribed antibiotics in the USA are dispensed for UTIs. About 50% of women will experience at least one UTI episode during lifetime, about 1 million emergency department visits due to UTI in the USA alone, resulting in more than 100 000 hospital admissions annually, most often for pyelonephritis. Moreover, UTIs are also the leading cause of hospital-acquired infections, accounting for approximately 40% of all such cases. The majority of these cases are catheter-associated. Therefore, nosocomial UTIs comprise perhaps the largest institutional reservoir for nosocomial antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Beside the economic impact, UTIs affect also significantly the quality of life of the affected population. The aim of this book is to highlight problematic aspects and recent advances in the field of UTIs. The book is divided in three parts

Abstract: This book summarizes several aspects of GD, which is caused by not well-understood multifactorial mechanisms. Common strategies seem to be key in the understanding of the syndrome, i.e., endothelial dysfunction and the role of other placenta cells such as trophoblasts. It is a book that will definitively help to increase the knowledge-based management of GD for the well being of the mother and the fetus. Several chapters lead us to the conclusion that pre-pregnancy and antenatal screening of women is required, something that will improve the management and outcome of a current pregnancy but will also optimize life-long health and well being considering the inter-generational consequences

Abstract: Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women worldwide, and infection with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) has been identified as the causal agent for this condition. The natural history of cervical cancer is characterized by slow disease progression, rendering the condition in essence preventable and even treatable when diagnosed in early stages. Pap smear and the recently introduced prophylactic vaccines are the most prominent prevention options, but despite the availability of these primary and secondary screening tools, the global burden of disease is unfortunately still very high This book will focus on the clinical and diagnostic aspects of HPV and related disease, highlighting the latest developments in this field

Abstract: The main goal in preparing this book was to publish contemporary concepts, new discoveries and innovative ideas in the field of surface engineering, predominantly for the technical applications, as well as in the field of production engineering and to stress some problems connected with the use of various surface processes in modern manufacturing of different purpose machine parts. This book is an attempt to introduce science into the study of surface treatment processes. Tribology offers a good approach for describing abrasive machining and coating processes and offers the ability to predict some of the outputs of the processes. The study of friction, forces, and energy explores the importance of the various factors which govern the stresses and deformations of abrasion. The effects of grain shape, depth of penetration, and lubrication on the process forces are explored. The tribology of nanostructured surfaces involves many fundamental and scientific issues. More importantly, it has tremendous applications in industries. It is a powerful tool to regulate friction, adhesion, and wetting of surfaces by altering their geometric textures and material compositions at the nanoscale, and, hence, to control the tribological performance of the engineering surfaces

Abstract: Neonatal sepsis still remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the newborn, particularly in preterm, low birth weight infants. Despite advances in neonatal care, overall case-fatality rates from sepsis may be as high as 50%. Clinical signs of bacterial infection are vague and non-specific, and up to now there exists no easily available, reliable marker of infection despite a large bulk of studies focussing on inflammatory indices in neonatology. Every neonatologist is faced with the uncertainty of under- or over- diagnosing bacterial infection. In this book three topics will be discussed: clinical presentation including a general approach to sepsis neonatorum and two distinct diagnoses pneumonia and osteomyelitis diagnostic approaches including C-reactive protein and the immature myeloid information, and prevention and treatment of bacterial infection with immunoglobulins

Abstract: Studies of herbivory provide important insights into fundamental questions in many areas of the biological sciences. The focus on natural systems is more effective for the prediction of potential changes in ecosystems, given that agricultural systems are designed to create an equilibrium that optimizes the productive process. Given the ramifications of the processes related to herbivory, studies based on complementary approaches are necessary for a better understanding of the different aspects of the ecological process. This book attempts to expand on these different aspects of herbivory by presenting a multidisciplinary approach to a number of different themes, focusing on topics that range from basic research in natural habitats to the intrinsic relationships between animals and plants in agricultural systems

Abstract: Adaptive filtering can be used to characterize unknown systems in time-variant environments. The main objective of this approach is to meet a difficult comprise: maximum convergence speed with maximum accuracy. Each application requires a certain approach which determines the filter structure, the cost function to minimize the estimation error, the adaptive algorithm, and other parameters; and each selection involves certain cost in computational terms, that in any case should consume less time than the time required by the application working in real-time. Theory and application are not, therefore, isolated entities but an imbricated whole that requires a holistic vision. Abstract: Alzheimer's dementia (AD) affects 6 million Europeans with 10% of people over age 65 and more than a quarter over 85. Given the steady aging of European societies, dementia and cognitive decline have developed into a major health problem with an enormous socioeconomic impact for patients, their families and caregivers, national health care systems, and society. Without any means to prevent or delay disease onset, the number of people with dementia is predicted to double by 2030 and triple by 2050. There is an urgent need for innovative strategies to increase understanding of pathological events that would translate into the development of successful prevention or, possibly, novel treatment strategies. Progresses in understanding pathological events in AD have been possible by using cell cultures, genetically modified organisms and animal models that lack the complexity of events occurring in humans. We need to overcome this limitation also by using data from humans - for studying pathological pathways in AD in a multidisciplinary setting

Abstract: Natural products are a constant source of potentially active compounds for the treatment of various disorders. The Middle East and tropical regions are believed to have the richest supplies of natural products in the world. Plant derived secondary metabolites have been used by humans to treat acute infections, health disorders and chronic illness for tens of thousands of years. Only during the last 100 years have natural products been largely replaced by synthetic drugs. Estimates of 200 000 natural products in plant species have been revised upward as mass spectrometry techniques have developed. For developing countries the identification and use of endogenous medicinal plants as cures against cancers has become attractive. Books on drug discovery will play vital role in the new era of disease treatment using natural products

Abstract: Natural processes and human activities alter the properties and quality of soils over time. Nowadays, the growing interest in soil protection prompts abundant research to estimate soil quality in wide-ranging environmental scenarios. The assessment of soil quality entails the evaluation of the capability of a soil to perform its functions in present scenarios but also how those functions can be preserved for future land use. Currently, soil processes, physical, chemical, and biological properties are recognized as indicators to estimate soil quality. Soil processes and current trends in quality assessment provides a wide depiction of current research conducted in soil quality assessment, encompassing general studies on soil processes, evaluation of significant indicators of soil quality such as soil organic matter dynamic and soil-plant interaction, while presenting diverse strategies for soil fitness amelioration

Abstract: More than 130 years have passed since the first description of sarcoid lesions by Sir Jonathan Hutchinson, but the cause of this systemic granulomatous disease is still unknown. Sarcoidosis remains a somewhat mysterious disease because many patients may enter spontaneous remission but some patients are chronically affected or relapse after intervention. Advances in recent sarcoidosis researches have added new insights to our understanding of complexity of sarcoidosis as introduced in this textbook, which includes a new concept of etiology as an endogenous infection caused by hypersensitivity to indigenous bacteria, updated immunopathogenesis and genetic factors, new directions in therapy, and new diagnostic approaches with EBUS-TBNA and FDG-PET. I believe this textbook is useful not only in practice but also for future researches of sarcoidosis

Abstract: The mortality from ischemic heart disease has decreased in recent years. The better understanding of risk factors associated with development of coronary artery disease has significantly contributed to this decline. Improvements in medical and interventional therapy have reduced the complications associated with acute myocardial infarction as well as revascularization. After the introduction of imaging modalities, the noninvasive characterization of regional function, perfusion and metabolism allowed for more sophisticated tissue characterization to identify reversible dysfunction with high diagnostic and prognostic accuracy. We now can legitimately claim that computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the coronary arteries is available. In the evaluation of patients with suspected coronary artery disease, many guidelines today consider CTA an alternative to stress testing. However the nuclear technique most frequently used by cardiologists is myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). The combination of a nuclear camera with CTA allows for the attainment of coronary anatomic, cardiac function and MPI from one piece of equipment. Assessing cardiac viability is now fairly routine with these enhancements to cardiac imaging. Traditional coronary angiography presents a variety of limitations related to image acquisition, content, interpretation, and patient safety. Barriers to such improvements include the paucity of clinical outcomes studies related to new imaging technology, the need for physician and staff member training, and the costs associated with acquiring and effectively using these advances in coronary angiography. This issue is full of important information that every cardiologist needs to now

Abstract: The medicinal use of plants, animals and microorganisms has been a part of human evolution and likely began before recorded history. Is it possible that this knowledge can be used to create powerful new drugs and solve some of the human health problems facing us today? This book is a collection of an expert team of agronomists, chemists, biologists and policy makers who discuss some of the processes involved in developing a naturally-sourced bioactive compound into a drug therapy. These experts define a natural compound and elucidate the processes required to find, extract and define a naturally-derived bioactive molecule. Finally, they describe the necessity for understanding the fundamental mechanisms of disease before applying bioactive molecules in bioassay-guided drug discovery platforms

Abstract: Few events in science have captured the same level of sustained interest and imagination of the nonscientific community as Stem Cells, Tissue Engineering, and Regenerative Medicine. The fundamental concept of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine is appealing to scientists, physicians, and lay people alike: to heal tissue or organ defects that the current medical practice deems difficult or impossible to cure. Tissue engineering combines cells, engineering, and materials methods with suitable biochemical and physiochemical factors to improve or replace biologic functions. Regenerative medicine is a new branch of medicine that attempts to change the course of chronic disease, in many instances regenerating failing organ systems lost due to age, disease, damage, or congenital defects. The area is rapidly becoming one of the most promising treatment options for patients suffering from tissue failure. This book of Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering fairly reflects the state of the art of these two disciplines at this time as well as their therapeutic application. It covers numerous topics, such as stem cells, cell culture, polymer synthesis, novel biomaterials, drug delivery, therapeutics, and the creation of tissues and organs. The goal is to have this book serve as a reference for graduate students, post-docs, teachers, scientists and physicians, and as an explanatory analysis for executives in biotech and pharmaceutical companies

Abstract: Climate scenarios suggest that current forest stands will face radically different temperature and precipitation conditions in the future. Developing future strategies for forest management in the face of uncertain and highly variable forecasts of future site conditions is a great challenge. Here we have analyzed transnational case studies dealing with different manifestations of climate change effects. We intend to stimulate the discussion on management strategies to adapt forests in the Alps to climate change risks. The presented results are derived from the INTERREG project ""Management Strategies to Adapt Alpine Space Forests to Climate Change Risks"" that was implemented within the framework of the European Territorial Cooperation ""Alpine Space Programme"" 2007-2013
